How do you mea-

sure what a company is worth? At Cambria, you can start by looking at what we create. It’s an ever-expanding variety of products (and services) that leads the industry in strength and beauty. But you can also look to the chain of hands that shape what we offer: folks who help us stay powered by the latest technology, who keep our products looking and feeling fresh, and who keep finding new ways for us to offer our customers more. Look closer: you’ll see how these people feel connected to their company, their fellow employees, and their drive to find ever-better ways to do the work that makes them proud. By that measure, Cambria’s been proving its worth since the dawn of the millennium.

The Innovation Begins

The year was 1999. Britney Spears was just dancing her way onto MTV. The first Star Wars prequel was captivating multiplex audiences. And we were all wondering whether, at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, the Y2K bug would bite.

But most importantly for our story, the Davis family (which puts the “family-owned” in Cambria) was about to pivot from success in dairy to success in something with a little more sparkle: quartz.

Not long after we learned that things would be A-OK regarding Y2K, Cambria opened a huge 150,000-square-foot facility in

Le Sueur, Minnesota. We quickly established the high standards for which our company would become known—from product innovation to customer service—and began designing, fabricating and installing exclusive Cambria surfaces.

Brian Scoggin, who leads Cambria Operations, recalls some of the company’s early steps

forward. “When I came aboard, the plant was converting from 1cm to 2cm and 3cm thickness,” he remembers. To ensure a smooth transition, Scoggin travelled to Italy, where he and his team gained a thorough understanding of the production process from the people

ALLISON BICKERSTAFF, CAMBRIA SR. MARKET REP, SHARES THE STORY OF HER BRUSH WITH DEATH

the editor-in-chief

Post and Cambria Style, I feel blessed to meet many intriguing people. When I sat down for a conversation with Allison Bickerstaff, a Cambria Sr. Market Rep who survived a horrific car accident two years ago, I was struck by the parallels between her and Amy Purdy, the amazing Paralympian who graced

the cover of Cambria Style in 2019. As Allison described her journey, she said she finds inspiration in the question, “If your life was a book and you were the author, how would you want your story to go?”

Thank you, Allison, for sharing your incredible story.

Letter from the Editor-in-Chief

YOU KNOW THAT adage, “Time flies when you’re having fun”? Well, recently I was reminded of just how true it is. One of my colleagues was thumbing through the new issue of Cambria Style and mentioned that she still had a copy of our first issue with supermodel Cheryl Tiegs on the cover. I was blown away since Cambria Style made its debut in 2009. That was a dozen years ago!

I got up from my desk and stood in front of my bookshelf where I keep all our back issues. As I looked at the stack of magazines, each one containing stories of amazing people and design projects, I was proud to see how Cambria Style has grown with our brand, reflecting and celebrating Cambria’s commitment to great design.

That conversation with my colleague also affirmed my belief in the power of print. In a world

where so much of our lives is conducted online, I think there’s real value in the things we can actually touch—which is why Cambria surfaces add so much beauty to a living environment. The power of print is why we’ve created The Cambria Post—to provide a vital, tangible connection between our people, our facilities, our partners, and our customers.

The ability to create things that matter is why I’m here at Cambria. When I started designing Cambria Style, I never dreamed I’d also be building a career. But, as a family-owned company, there’s endless opportunity for American-made innovation, quality, creativity—and fun!— at Cambria.

I’m proud to share this first issue of The Cambria Post with you. More than a newspaper, it’s a touchpoint for our Cambria community. I hope you and your family enjoy reading it as much as my team and I enjoyed creating it.

Warmly,

CoNversations with our colleagues

Q&A with Arik Tendler, Cambria Chief Sales Officer

Prior to joining Cambria, Arik was the owner of Caesarstone USA for more than a decade, so he comes by his passion for quartz—dare we say it—naturally!

Q: First, the backstory. Why Cambria?

Q: How would you describe your leadership style?

A: I view myself as a coach, so my goal is to create winning work environments at our Le Sueur and Belle Plaine facilities through strategy, planning, accountability, and effective communication. I’m constantly working to foster a strong culture by recognizing coaching opportunities, engaging in crucial conversations, and providing constructive feedback. As a coach, I strive to inspire my teams by practicing what I preach. I encourage people to discover what Cambria’s values mean to them, understand how their work impacts Cambria, and lead by example. This includes owning their responsibilities, discovering social styles in themselves and their teammates, and learning to build and maintain good working relationships. ✦

Q: What brought you to Cambria's Marketing Department?

A: After I sold Caesarstone in 2011, I started another quartz company so I know the business inside and out, all over the world. When Marty Davis asked me to join Cambria, the decision was easy because Cambria has the best brand story, the best designs, the best quality, and the best service. After all, what’s more fun than selling the best of the best?

That’s high praise from a quartz guy!

A: I mean it with all my heart and soul. My dad was in the quartz business, so it’s in my blood.

In the world of same-old, same-old, I hate to be plain vanilla. Cambria looks different and feels different, and that’s all about our aesthetic and our designs. The Dragon is in the details!

Q: Where are you focusing your passion and energy?

A: My goal is to establish Cambria as the key point of sale in every market, so I’m constantly traveling between L.A., Minneapolis, and our key markets in the U.S. and Canada. The team and I are focusing on key accounts like The Home Depot and prospective accounts to drive in-store and in-home sales, as well as homeowners, architects, builders, designers, and influencers— everyone who plays a role in the decisionmaking process. ✦

A: Bonne question, as we say en Français! My mother is an interior designer in Morocco and my husband is an architect in Minneapolis, so design is my life. And, having spent my formative years in Corsica, Madagascar, West Africa, Paris, and Morocco before attending college in Montpellier, France, I have a broad global perspective that informs my thinking and my work as a marketer for multinational brands such as Aveda—and now Cambria. I’m excited about using my passion for storytelling to bring focus and clarity to the Cambria narrative as we share this amazing brand story with new audiences around the world. ✦

who created the machines that make our products. “We learned about the equipment and what we could do with it,” Scoggin explains. As a result, he says, they were soon “experimenting with new ideas and expanding our capabilities.”

Summer Kath, Cambria's EVP of Design, says that this search for new ideas was part of the Davis family’s plan since its earliest days. “From the very beginning, it was Marty Davis’ mission to innovate,” she says. “He challenged our engineers to improve the technology; they did and still are.”

Scoggin adds that both Marty and Mitch Davis have been pushing the ball forward ever since they played on their high school football team. “Using technology to push innovation forward is a Davis family tradition,” says Scoggin.

Where Art and Science Meet

This focus on improving technology allowed for advances such as the design called Victoria™— Cambria’s sophisticated answer to granite—which was definitely a game-changer. “Nobody else had this product,” Scoggin boasts.

By 2003, Cambria was making other improvements, as well. For example, we opened our first design studio inside Minneapolis’ International Market Square. We began partnering with celebrities, including eternally light and lively model Cheryl Tiegs and Academy Award–nominated actress Mariel Hemingway. We hit number four on Entrepreneur magazine’s “Hot 500” list of fastest growing businesses. And even as we expanded our offerings with new designs, FabShops, and Galleries, we were also looking into new ways of serving our customers. We began to help people achieve their dream homes with funds from Cambria Financial Services and advice from our magazine Cambria Style We also officially introduced the world to Cambi, the distinguished little dragon that is still our mascot today.

Meanwhile, design remained at the heart of what we do. But good design exists at the intersection of what can be dreamed up and what is possible. “There’s both art and science to creating Cambria,” designer Kath explains. “The art can go in so many directions.” If a designer imagines something they believe customers will clamor for but that’s

beyond our current technical ability, our production team explores ways to make it a reality. “We push what’s possible with technology,” says Kath. The inspiration process works in reverse, as well. New technology can enable our designers to expand their horizons. But whether the innovation originates on the design side or the production side, says Kath, “We aim to be different, yet always beautiful and highly desired.”

offerings—even,” as Tendler points out, “in an industry where so many products are plain vanilla.”

Cambria Family Values

Meanwhile, we never lost focus on the people behind the products. Just ask Angela McLain, Head of Samples Fulfillment. “When I started with Cambria in 2007, we had a team of about 20 employees,” she remembers. The company’s

who’s been with Cambria since our early days. He vividly remembers the Le Sueur plant’s public grand opening party back in 2001. It was an unseasonably hot fall day, and Morton remembers he was sweating buckets and covered from head to toe in grease from helping work the grill to feed the nearly 1,000 guests who showed up. But Morton even found a way to innovate when it came to cooling down. “My wife ended up cutting my black dress pants into shorts,” he says with a laugh. The party was a rousing success, and both Morton and the plant are still important parts of Cambria.

Focus on the Future

This cooperational push to expand what’s possible with our new designs is also a point of pride for Cambria National Sales Trainer Mike Morton. “We are design leaders in the industry,” he says—also noting that “our competitors call their choices ‘colors,’ but ours are truly designs.”

But these designs are not just new for newness’ sake, Cambria Chief Sales Officer Arik Tendler emphasizes. They’re meant to help people feel more at home in the spaces where they live and work. “Countertops and surfaces are a powerful way for homeowners, architects, and interior designers to reflect their aesthetic,” he says. "So, in order to keep helping more people express their style, we keep finding ways to spice up our design

success meant they soon needed more people and more room. “We grew 40 percent month over month and quickly outgrew the building we were in,” she shares. Yet, even as they expanded, McLain kept a watchful eye on the team. “It’s been fun to see everyone grow and change with the business,” she says.

That includes team members who have remained incredibly loyal, among them Joe Lawrence (with Cambria 13 years), Lynne Maczkowicz (14 years) and Becky Leeper (18 years). “I don’t think we’d have it any other way,” McLain says with evident pride.

And, as tends to happen when team members stick around for a while, they’ve amassed some unforgettable company stories. That’s definitely true of Mike Morton,

Today, it feels like we are living in the future that all of this innovation has been propelling Cambria toward. We are a truly international company. We created a feature film called Legend of Cambria, which weaves a fantastical origin story for our brand—based on Celtic mythology and narrated by global superstar Colin Farrell. We’ve even purchased our own quartz mine, which promises our products will be crafted from the highest-quality quartz on the planet for centuries to come. Exciting partnerships with other innovators have also opened new avenues, such as the new Cambria designs now available exclusively at industry leader The Home Depot. We even had monumental success last year in the midst of the pandemic—as we observed our milestone 20th anniversary, in part by rolling out 20 new designs. And that march toward progress will keep on going. We’ll be offering new designs each quarter in 2021 and even more in the future. “We have more innovating to do,” Kath says. “Stay tuned to 2022 because we have some pretty special unique, artistic collections and finishes coming your way.”

McLain notes that Cambria’s ever-expanding selection will continue to set us apart. “We are always bringing something new to the table. We are always relevant in any space. We have something that works for everyone,” she says. That “working for everyone” begins with valuing our employees—encouraging them to learn and implement innovative technology, to dream bigger when it comes to design, and to keep expanding to ensure excellence in interactions from sales to installations. And ultimately, that work helps every Cambria customer be more creative. ✦

More Life to Live

ALLISON BICKERSTAFF, CAMBRIA SR. MARKET REP, SHARES THE STORY OF HER BRUSH WITH DEATH

Allison Bickerstaff grew up in Monaca, Pennsylvania, a town similar to Le Sueur, Minnesota. It was a small, close-knit community and many of her neighbors worked at Anchor Hocking, the American glassware manufacturer. Her mom Carolyn was a teacher and her dad Gary worked at Carnegie Mellon University. There were 68 kids in her high school class including her now-husband Ryan. Leah, her best friend, went to a neighboring high school.

After graduating with an interior design degree from LaRoche University in Pittsburgh, Allison got a job as an architectural rep for a Formica products company. When a contact at Wilsonart retired and recommended Allison as her replacement, she interviewed and got the job. She worked at Wilsonart for three years before joining Cambria in 2016. “I love working for Cambria as I get to use my passion for design and all the skills I’ve learned along the way,” Allison says.

Thursday, September 13, 2018, started out as a normal day. Allison put her son Logan and daughter Payton on the bus and got ready for a meeting at one of her accounts. She was on the road when a white truck came barreling toward her. It hit her head-on and slammed her Prius to the side of the road. While she has no memory of the impact, she vividly recalls the sound of the crash, the smell of burning, and a song on the radio.

“I literally remember every second like a movie,” she says. “I sat up, looked around and saw my windshield all busted up,” she says. “I tried to get out but my door wouldn’t open. While I was crawling over to the passenger side, I looked down and saw my right ankle was nearly torn off my leg. Thankfully, my adrenaline was going so I didn’t feel any pain. I called Ryan and told

A QUICK CHAT WITH ALLISON

him I’d been in an accident. While he was calling my parents, I called my rep.”

While Allison was on the phone, she saw a woman outside her car so she yelled for help. “We’ve called 911,” the woman replied. “The next thing I know, a fire truck and an ambulance were outside my car,” Allison continues. “The paramedics cut the door off my car, lifted me out, wrapped my ankle and put me on a stretcher. I told them I didn’t

help,” Allison continues. “When Ryan explained that we were having issues with insurance so we were paying out-of-pocket for my prescriptions, Marty immediately called Michelle Coleman, our Chief Human Resources Officer, and they worked with Ryan to navigate the process.”

For the next three months, Allison was in a wheelchair while her broken bones, torn ligaments, and damaged tendons healed.

care for my accounts and check in on me regularly to keep me feeling connected. Even my Cambria Certified Installers reached out to let me know they were thinking about me.”

Allison graduated from her wheelchair to a scooter and started physical therapy. She learned that the driver of the white truck was a 72-year-old man. He'd suffered a heart attack, which is what caused him to lose control of his vehicle.

Allison credits her steelreinforced Cambria Prius and the paramedics for saving her life. She also believes there was another divine force at work. “Except for me, nobody ever saw the woman who called 911. I honestly believe it was my best friend Leah, who passed away from cancer when she was 35. My heart tells me she was an angel, watching over me that day and helping me get through this because there’s so much more life for me to live.”

need to go in the ambulance but when they informed me I’d broken my collarbone and sternum, I gave in.”

When the doctors at the hospital saw the extent of Allison’s injuries, they immediately transported her to a larger hospital in Pittsburgh where she underwent surgery to repair her ankle. “Ryan was a godsend,” she remembers. “While my parents took care of Logan and Payton, he did everything for me from washing my hair to giving me my medications. It brings tears to my eyes, just thinking about it. As soon as Marty Davis, our CEO, heard about my accident, he called Ryan to see how he could

Her parents cancelled a trip to Las Vegas so they could care for the family. Friends and neighbors delivered meals and took the kids to football and gymnastics practice while Allison’s Cambria colleagues went above and beyond to make sure she could fully relax and focus on healing.

“I really love my job. Cambria is the best company I’ve ever worked for, so I was grateful to know my position would be waiting for me when I was ready to come back to work. Everyone on my team—Bruce Gebhart, Nathan Shimp, Nina Patel, Marni Cercone, Ashley Oates, Lisa Gritton, and Kalna Bobyn—was amazing. They all pitched in to help

JUST BEFORE THIS ISSUE went to press, our editor-inchief LouAnn Berglund Haaf caught up with Allison. It’s been two years since she returned to her job after her accident and armed with her trademark energy, she’s exceeding her personal and professional goals.

“I’m proud to be setting a good example for my kids by being back at work and surpassing my sales

In late January 2019, Allison’s doctors cleared her for driving. Although it was a difficult step forward, her dad took her to a parking lot. “Seeing my feet on the pedals brought back so many memories, but my dad sat with me and told me it would be okay. I only drove a couple of times around the parking lot that first day. But, I was very determined to do all the things I was able to do before the accident so I kept practicing with my dad until I could drive by myself.”

On March 1, 2019, Allison returned to her job and her Cambria colleagues and customers greeted her with open arms. “I’m thankful to be strong, healthy, and back at work,” she says. “If there’s a silver lining in this experience, I now truly understand that we can’t take anything for granted. As a result, I cherish every moment of every day and make sure everyone in my life knows how much I love them.” ✦

goals every month,” Allison says. “I also walked 170 miles in January, which was a huge milestone for me. I’m happy to be doing the job I love, nurturing and strengthening the relationships I’ve built with my customers and installers. Even though I’ve come so far, there’s still so much for me to do, but I know I can accomplish anything I set out to do!”

Allison credits her steel-reinforced Prius and the paramedics with saving her life.

The Ivy Lee Method: My Go-To Life Hack

Several years ago, when I was attempting to prioritize my endless to-do list, I stumbled on the Ivy Lee Method—now one of my most valuable rules in work and life. Back in 1918, Charles M. Schwab, president of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, hired Lee, a productivity consultant, to improve company efficiency. As the story goes, Lee offered his method to Schwab for free, and after three months, Schwab was so pleased with the results, he paid Lee $25,000—nearly $400,000 in today’s dollars.

Hands down, this method is my go-to life hack. It helps me plan and prepare for tomorrow, lessening decision fatigue so I have enough energy to finish my most important tasks. It even helps my kids prioritize their own tasks, everything from playing zoo to putting their jammies in the laundry...brilliant!

Serves

INGREDIENTS

Thousand Island Dressing

½ cup mayonnaise

¼ cup ketchup

¼ cup chopped garlic dill pickles, plus 1 tablespoon pickle juice

2 tablespoons minced onion or shallot

1 clove garlic, minced

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

½ teaspoon kosher salt

¼ teaspoon ground black pepper

Sandwiches

8 slices pumpernickel or rye bread

2 pounds thinly sliced corned beef

2 cups sauerkraut, drained

8 slices Swiss cheese

8 tablespoons (1 stick)

unsalted butter, softened, plus enough for the pan

4 garlic dill pickle spears

TAKE

LUNCHTIME TO A NEW LEVEL OF DELICIOUSNESS

DIRECTIONS

For Thousand Island dressing: Whisk together all ingredients in a small bowl. For each sandwich, generously slather two slices of bread with Thousand Island dressing and stack one slice of bread with ample portions of corned beef and sauerkraut and two slices of cheese. Top with the second slice of bread and lightly butter.

Heat a large heavy skillet over medium heat. Working in batches if necessary, add the sandwiches buttered-sidedown and cook, covered, until the bottom is crispy, 3 to 4 minutes. Lightly butter the top and flip, adding some more butter to the pan if needed. Cook, uncovered, another 3 to 4 minutes. The sandwiches should be hot all the way through, the cheese should be melted, and both sides of the sandwich should be crispy or browned. Halve the sandwiches and serve immediately, with dill pickle spears and any extra dressing on the side for dipping.

6 dill pickles, sliced lengthwise

12 slices Swiss cheese

DIRECTIONS

For the cilantro sauce: Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor and purée until you achieve an even consistency.

To assemble the sandwiches: Heat a panini press. Spread six slices of bread with mustard and top with ample portions of ham, two slices Swiss, some pickle slices, and a generous amount of cilantro sauce. Top with another slice of bread.

(Extra cilantro sauce will keep, covered, in the refrigerator for two days.)

Working in batches, press the sandwiches until the bread is toasty and golden brown and the cheese melted, about 8 minutes. Halve the sandwiches and serve hot.

* EDITOR'S TIP: If you don’t have a panini press, you can crisp up your Cuban sandwich in a sauté pan or on a skillet, pressing down on each side with a second heavy pan.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:

1. Before you go to bed, take 15 minutes and make a list of the six most important things you need to get done the next day. I use Google Tasks on my phone so I can add tasks as they pop up.

2. Next, prioritize your tasks by order of importance.

3. First thing in the morning, jump into the first task.

4. When it’s complete, move on to the second task and so forth.

5. Whatever is unfinished at the end of the day, add it to tomorrow’s list to be re-prioritized. In essence, by planning your day the night before, you can wake up knowing exactly what you need to do that day. And, by being productive at work, you’ll have more time for having fun with your family! ✦

LEFT: The classic Reuben packs corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing between rye bread. Swap in pastrami or turkey and coleslaw and you’ll have yourself a “Rachel.” BELOW: The traditional Cuban pairs ham and slow-roasted pork.
