From the Headmaster Welcome Back I look forward to welcoming all of our students in Years 4 to 10 back to School next week. It has been terrific having some students back this past fortnight, but it will be even better when we are all back together. I am grateful to our students for assisting us with our heightened cleaning regimes, our emphasis on hand hygiene and physical distancing where possible. Their assistance with these things has meant that the return to School has been relatively seamless. A reminder that next Monday is a public holiday and there will be no classes at School or online. As more students return to School, can I remind everyone of the following: • Students should move directly into classrooms when they arrive, and not wait outside in groups. • Students should use the cleaning materials in each room to wipe down their desk at the beginning of the period. • Students should also regularly use hand sanitizer which is located around the School. • Students should not come to School if they are experiencing any symptoms of illness at all. • The Canteen is open, but only for pre-ordered food. Students who wish to use the canteen will need to download the FlexiSchools app, set up an account and preload it with some money. Food will be available for pick up only at recess and lunch. • Drink taps are unavailable for use, so students may wish to bring a drink bottle. • If students have a scheduled PE class during the day they may come to School in their PE uniform and wear it all day. Students will be able to change for all other sporting commitments. • I encourage all students to download the CovidSafe app and have it running on their phones. Students are allowed to carry their phones with them on campus at this time. This will mean that if we do discover a case of Covid-19 in our community we will be able to complete contact tracing quickly and efficiently. We are now in the assessment stage for Semester 1 in preparation for our reports. Tests and examinations have been taking place, and our first ever online examinations have proven to be an interesting challenge! It has been a very unusual year for us all, and our reports therefore will reflect these different circumstances. We have Parent-Teacher interviews scheduled for early in Term 3 and given the uncertainty surrounding social gathering restrictions, we thought it would be wise to plan for these being conducted over the ZOOM platform. It is envisaged that parents will be able to schedule appointments in the normal way, but then log into a ZOOM meeting with each of their son’s teachers from home. It may be that we find this something worth pursuing in the future! We will provide more detail about this closer to the time. Our new DEEDs app and website with its live news stream, will soon replace the Weekly Bulletin. The app will target news to each group of parents, and will also increasingly become a way for us to communicate with parents, to complete forms and to share information. For the rest of this Term we will continue to send out the Bulletin, and also to use the app – this article, for example, will also appear in the app – but from the start of next Term, the Bulletin will cease and DEEDs will replace it. If you have not already done so, please download this free app – search for Camberwell Grammar DEEDs – in the App Store or on Google Play. Thanks once more to everyone for your forbearance and understanding during these uncertain and challenging times. It has been a joy to welcome students back to School and I look forward to us all being together again next Tuesday. We are so excited to see the students back on campus next Tuesday and I know how much the students are looking forward to seeing each other again. To assist with safety and continue the great work we have all put in over the past 10 weeks, I ask that all students and parents take a close look through the relevant flyers for students and parents posted to Schoology and DEEDs outlining the changes we have put in place. Whilst we transition back to School, we need to remember that things will be different; at least for a while.

As mentioned above, students who are unwell must stay at home. In this instance, please register your son’s absence through DEEDs. Boys who are absent will be able to access all of their class work through Schoology. If you are experiencing any difficulty with DEEDs, please contact the ICT Help Desk.

Next week is the final week of our Semester 1 Timetable. We then transition into Semester 2 on Wednesday 10 June which may include minor changes for the students; including new Electives (Year 8) as well as some room changes. Boys are reminded to check their Timetables closely to make sure they are prepared.

Homework Club The students are encouraged to check in to Homework Club (Tuesday and Thursday in Rooms A20, A21, A22) if they feel they might be behind with any of their work. The new Semester also offers the opportunity for our students to start a-fresh and work on utilising their new found organisational skills. This will be most important for their well-being and a positive transition back to School.

Friday Activities Given our inability to facilitate large groups, the Middle School Friday Sports and Activities sessions will not run for the remainder of the Term. This means that most students will finish School on Fridays at 2.45pm. Year 6 will be involved in a modified Sports Program until 3.00pm. Students currently registered in ‘Virtual Activities’, will need to liaise with their respective Activity Leader to discuss where and how that will continue.
Reminders for Next Week Boys who have PE are asked to wear their PE attire to School to avoid congestion in the change rooms. Those who do not have PE during the day must wear Winter Uniform, including their Blazer, to and from School. I am sure that I am not alone in resenting the thought of trading a tracksuit for a tie, but I do encourage the students to wear their uniform with pride. Hair-cuts must conform with school regulations. I wish you all a wonderful long-weekend and look forward to seeing your sons next Tuesday. Troy Stanley, Head of Middle School

With the return of all students next Tuesday 9 June, our distance learning comes to an end and the School will be back to having our classrooms busy with students engaged in their learning. There is no doubt that, despite the isolation and restrictions of distance learning, the students have learnt valuable lessons and developed new skills. In fact, many have shown the capacity to be responsible, independent learners effectively managing their time and lesson requirements. I congratulate the students and applaud their efforts and resilience and thank parents for their wonderful support, patience and encouragement. We are all very happy to be back together again in our Junior School Village. The Lower Primary Students have settled in quickly and have adapted well to the new regime of health and hygiene measures. The drop off/pick up system has been flowing well. Thank you parents for clearly displaying your name sign and for staying in your cars during drop off and pick up. With the return of the upper grades the driveways will be busier and I ask for your patience so we can keep everyone safe and happy. Of a morning, Year 4 and 5 students are to be dropped outside Kingussie and to walk down to their classrooms. There will be staff on duty to assist. PrePrep to Year 3 can still be dropped at the maintenance shed as you have been doing over the past two weeks. After School pickup is at Kingussie unless you have made other arrangements for your son to meet you off campus. We ask parents of students in Years 3 to 5 to please arrive after 3.15pm so we can clear the younger grades without the driveway being jammed up. Sport AGSV Updated Position Statement from Troy Rowe, Executive Officer, Associated Grammar Schools of Victoria Before making any decisions related to interschool sport, the AGSV Heads will continue to monitor advice from the Victorian Government, its Chief Health Officer and the Department of Health and Human Services related to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Please refer to the latest release from 1 June. This outlines the current status for AGSV sporting events/ competition for the remainder of Term 2 and 3. This can also be found on our website and an Announcement has been posted on our Instagram and Twitter platforms.

Decisions regarding interschool sport and what can/can’t be held during what remains of the Winter season, and events planned for Term 3 (and beyond) will be influenced by the latest advice from Government authorities, as well as how the situation is impacting each member school. The ‘great unknown’ is where interschool sport sits as restrictions continue to ease. The State Government needs to clearly inform the masses about this. Once further advice and updates are available, we will update our stakeholders. AGSV appreciates your ongoing support as the world contends with unprecedented times. We wish every member school and their community continued good health.

Sport Training in Weeks 10 and 11 Emails have been sent to parents to sign up their sons to train in their respective sports in Weeks 10 and 11. Students will train in accordance with current guidelines and recommendations for COVID-19, and protocols will be put in place to ensure a safe environment. Subject to Government restrictions and AGSV recommendations, we are hopeful of playing a 3-week Winter Sport season at the beginning of Term 3. It is highly recommended to attend training to properly prepare for those matches.
Change of Summer Sport Preferences for 2020-21 Students remain in the same sport from season to season unless a parent or guardian completes a Change of Sport Preference form on their behalf. Complete this form by Friday 12 June to submit your son’s Change of Summer Sport Preference for the 2020-21 Summer season. Please visit the individual sport pages on the DEEDs Sport homepage to gain an understanding of the commitment and expectations of each Summer Sport. Results will be published to students during Term 3. While we aim to give students their first preference, please note that some sports have limited availability so, in some cases, it may not be possible. Lachlan Crawford, Director of Sport
Music Junior School Orchestra The Junior School Orchestra had their last online rehearsal this week, after having powered through the remote learning period this Term. They charged their way through the repertoire, learning a variety of music from across the world. This included Latin-inspired Mariachi tunes, crisp English country folk songs and pieces that took them up icy mountains and across the Sahara. The students are very much looking forward to putting the pieces together in the near future and feeling the thrill of playing their instruments as an ensemble once more.
Music Academy Lockdown Competition The 2020 Lockdown Competitions were created to motivate and inspire Music Academy students during the time of isolation. With AMEB Exams, Eisteddfods and Performances on hold, it gave the students an opportunity to prepare technically challenging and enriching pieces which are sometimes overlooked. Each musician uploaded a video of their pieces. The violinists, violists and cellists prepared scales and studies, the wind players prepared Orchestral Excerpts and the pianists prepared Bach Inventions. The Academy was very fortunate to have a wonderful line-up of adjudicators including musicians from the Melbourne and Sydney Symphony Orchestras and pianist Ian Munro. All students received valuable feedback and found the arduous process of recording their pieces a rewarding challenge.

Here are the Lockdown Competition results: Double Bass - 1st Prize: Sam Parmenter Damien Eckerslie, Acting Principal Bass MSO “great full sound…resonant sound and beautiful articulation”. Cello - 1st Prize: Derrick Kwon Rachael Tobin, Associate Principal Cellist MSO commented: “ excellent facility and control… a natural performer”. HM Ray He and Nicholas Branson. Violin/Viola - 1st Prize: Steven Wang Matthew Tomkins, Principal second violinist MSO commented: “an excellent performance of a very difficult work” Honourable Mention: Wilson Zhu, Joshua Morgan and Leo Qi. Oboe - 1st Prize: Kieran Teoh Diana Doherty, Principal oboist of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra admired Kieran’s refined tone. Flute - 1st Prize: Freddy Branson Prue Davis, Principal flautist of the MSO described Freddy’s playing as ‘stunning’. Honourable Mention: Nicholas Teoh. French Horn - 1st Prize: Dennis Shaliga Nicolas Feury, Principal Horn of MSO commented, “great playing with a lot of flamboyance”. Trumpet - 1st Prize: Daniel Watson Rosie Turner, trumpeter of the MSO commented that he played with great sensitivity. Honourable Mention Andrew Hare.
Performance at St Johns On 15 May, Joseph Pang and Arman Cakmakcioglu performed part of their VCE program in a live-streamed performance at St Johns Camberwell. They performed works by Bach, Scarlatti, Haydn, Mozart (arr Fazil Say), Debussy and Rachmaninov on a magnificent Mason and Hamlin piano. The pianists learnt a great deal from this experience, performing to an unseen and potentially extremely large audience. If you missed their performance,click on this link.
Stefan Cassomenos - Artist in Residence Celebrated pianist Stefan Cassomenos worked with Joseph and Arman in May and June, observing strict social distancing rules. During this time, the students worked on phrasing, examined harmonic structure, articulation and dynamic range on their VCE repertoire. Having endured weeks of musical isolation, it was a thrill to hear Stefan play on our beautiful Steinway in the PAC. Both students enjoyed success at the Boroondara Eisteddfod. Joseph won the 16 years and under Piano section. Arman came third in the Open Piano section and was awarded an HM in the 18 years and under Piano section.
Friday Afternoon Academy Zoom Performance Class Every Friday afternoon during Academy time, students gathered on Zoom and performed to each other. Feedback and encouragement was given by Ms Lisa Grosman, Mr Greg Roberts, Ms Esther Toh, Mr David Laughton and Ms Steph Dixon. This gave the students an opportunity to feel the pressure of a live performance in a supportive environment. Some students who encountered Internet connect issues, chose to upload a performance from earlier in the day. This provided valuable experience also as they were able to observe and comment on their own performance.
Ravel Pavane Project During Lockdown, 10 violinists recorded an arrangement of Ravel’s Pavane pour one infante defunte for 10 violinists and 1 Double Bass. Each student was given their own individual part and an audio file containing a click track and a synthesized version of the arrangement. The students then recorded themselves playing while listening to the track. Miss Jess Doutch layered all the parts together and combined them with Ms Anne Walters’ beautiful photographs. Mathematics Research Competition 2020 The School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Melbourne is pleased to announce the launch of its new Research Competition. The competition is aimed at all Victorian school students in Years 7 to 12 and is free to enter. Students can choose to work on one of eight projects either on their own or collaboratively in a small team. The students can complete the project in their own time, until the final submission date in July. Monash University - Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Virtual Fair Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is running a Virtual Fair from 1 June to 7 June 2020. While aimed at their current students, future students are welcome. CGS PLUS Opening Times – Term 2 The remaining booking dates and times for Term 2 for the Pre-Loved Uniform Shop are now available by visiting DEEDs and navigating to Parent Services - School Uniform. Click here for the DEEDs School Uniform page. We ask that you arrive on time for your appointment and take no longer than the allotted 20 minutes. To ensure that we have as few people in the shop as possible, please only bring along those that are required. Please ensure that you practice safe hygiene methods before entering the shop. Access to the shop on Saturdays will be through Gate 9 on Chatfield Avenue. These bookings are only for people wanting to purchase uniforms. Due to current conditions, PLUS are currently not accepting pre-loved uniforms.
