LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN The Hung Kuen Documentary Cathy, Peter and Harry Cheung In 2012, three siblings, Cathy, Peter and Harry Cheung decided to do a documentary film on Lam Family Hung Kuen. Their efforts would commemorate the legendary icon of Hung Kuen, Great Grandmaster Lam Cho, and pay tribute to all the Lam Family Hung Kuen teachers and practitioners around the globe. They led their Canadian film crew to over 12 cities (Prague, Valasske Mezirici, Rome, Avellino, Paestum, Karlsruhe, Frankfurt, Los Angeles, Boston, Calgary, Hong Kong, and Xiqiao) to produce the documentary.

This documentary is about culture, tradition, past and present. The passing of Great Grandmaster Lam Cho, one of the greatest martial artists of the century, signified a great loss in the Chinese martial arts world. Where does the future of Hung Kuen lie before us?

The theme of this documentary is “Friendship through Martial Arts”. The subjects that were interviewed are very important and their points of views reveal the conflict as well as the promise, both now and into the future of the Hung Kuen art.

This feature film will take the audience inside the famous Blue House (藍屋), built in the 1920’s. Many Chinese and Japanese tourists have visited the outside of this historical building where Lam Cho and his family lived after WWII, running his kung fu school as well as his traditional medicine clinic for many decades. Presently, Lam Chun Hin’s wife still lives and operates her clinic there. The Blue House is located at 72 Stone Nullah Lane, Wan Chai, Hong Kong.

Greetings, fellow Lam Family Hung Kuen friends and family! Once again it is my honor and distinct pleasure to submit an article for our World Lam Family Hung Kuen Newsletter! Before I begin I must say that it has been a thrill for all of us at Calvin Chin’s Martial Arts Academy, to learn about the achievements and insights of our Hung Kuen Family! I am very thankful to Grandmaster Lam Chun Fai for his leadership in promoting Lam Family Hung Kuen (LFHK). I must also thank Cathy Johnston, who’s tireless efforts and support along with Chris Toepker have made the idea of this newsletter a reality. I also must thank all of you fellow contributors, readers, and LFHK brothers and sisters. Finally, I am thankful to my own Sifu Master Calvin Chin, who guides me daily and imparts his knowledge about LFHK and life in general.

Since our last newsletter article submission, we have been, as always quite busy. June 17 th was the date of our annual gala event, The Helen Gee Chin Scholarship Foundation Fundraiser Show! This is a two hour show and the culmination of many months of diligent preparation by many students. This year we Streamed the event Live on Facebook and our website through Livestream.com This was our second-year streaming, but this year we did not charge for the stream. It was 100% free and can still be viewed on our website at http:// www.calvinchin.com/livestream/hgcsf-2017-fundraiser-exhibition/. It features performance of Lam Family Hung Kuen of course, with many large group formations, as well as Tai Chi, Lion Dance, Dragon Dance, Kung Fu Flag, and more! This event was also the featured video stream on the home page of livestream.com, the world’s largest online streaming platform! We were happy to have over 4,000 viewers worldwide! I am also happy to announce that this year’s pool of scholarship applicants was so strong and qualified, both academically and from a Chinese martial arts perspective, that we had to award $20,000. In scholarships! Last year we awarded $11,000. To date we’ve awarded over US$80,000 in college scholarships to students from all over the country!

After the Scholarship fundraiser, the next large event we had was The European Hung Kuen Championships, hosted by Sifu Massimo Iannacone. This was an event that I was very happy to be a part of. Since we have a lot of competition experience in the US, I was asked to be the Chief Judge of the competition; a job that I saw as a great responsibility and was grateful to be involved in! Everyone who attended the beautiful and picturesque venue could not help but enjoy the beautiful weather and hospitality of the wonderful host country! Our spirits were somewhat dampened to hear that Grandmaster Lam Chun Fai was unable to attend because of a health issue. Our thoughts were with him, wishing him good health, and making the event one he would be proud of! Attendance to both, the seminars on offer, - Sup Ying Kuen with

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN Master Pavel Adamek/Czech Republic, Ng Ying Kuen with Master Andreas Garski/ Germany and Mattias Lindh/Sweden, and Ji Fei Dao, with our host, Master Massimo Iannacone Lamand the competition was strong. All proceeds from the seminars were to be donated to Grand Master Lam Chun Fai to help offset his medical expenses! Teams representing Italy, Brazil, Czech Republic, Germany, Sweden, Greece, and USA were in attendance and the level of competition and camaraderie was very high! From Calvin Chin’s Martial Arts Academy, this year Team USA consisted of only two competitors, Andrew and Mari Goldstein. Mari Goldstein took home three silvers and two gold. In a very generous gesture, Andrew Goldstein was awarded the Athlete of the competition! Highlights for me personally were the Q&A session during the seminars. I was honored to be invited to sit on the panel that answered questions asked by participants! It was very enlightening to hear the other masters of note, talk about the challenges they faced in their own country trying to promote our beloved LFHK. It was very interesting to hear both, the similarities and in some cases the differences in experience from so many different countries. It was also interesting to hear about the different approaches to meeting these challenges! The highlights of this trip for me personally included, being able to help ensure that the competition was fair, consistent, and efficient with the help of our hosts and more than capable fellow judges and officials, and spending time with our LFHK family from around the world. Getting to know each other on a more personal level, having conversations across a dinner table. These are experiences I will cherish and carry with me!

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN The closing ceremonies and banquet provided an opportunity for everyone to see performances from some of the winning competitors and the Judges and officials! Mari Goldstein performed Sil Lum Perk Wah Dao I performed double three section chain whips. There were many great performances by masters in attendance! An obvious highlight was master Oscar Lam’s performance of Fu Hok Seung Ying Kuen! I told My Sifu and students what a wonderful experience this was! Hopefully we will bring a team next year! Perhaps my Sifu Calvin Chin will present a seminar as well!

Only two weeks after returning home from the successful Italy event, I left for Baltimore, Maryland USA. The US Kuo Shu Federation international tournament was preceded this year by an International Referee Certification. Long time student, Kaitlyn Yong and I attended this week long intensive training that included two days of testing, both written and practical. We learned a lot and I’m happy to report that we both earned World Kuo Shu Federation, International Referee B certifications! The last day of IRT includes the National Judges certification. I help to teach this course and we were proud of our own, Sifu Mynor Diaz, and long-time student Eric Kolaczyk for achieving National Judge B. Also of note Sifu Alex Woo achieving his National Judge A! Then it was on to competition. This is a premiere event made more so by the fact this year was a qualifier for the World tournament to be held next year! We had three people qualify to represent team USA in the worlds next year! Kaitlyn Yong, Mari Goldstein, and Kianna Lee! We also won overall team 2nd place Adult Kung Fu, with only 5 competitors and 3rd all around Youth Kung Fu with only 13 competitors. In contrast, the next school up from us had 45 competitors and 150 competitors respectively. In addition to all of this, we also had five students nominated for competitor of the year and two winners, Kaitlyn Yong and Kiana Lee!

Every year we use the Baltimore tournament as a platform to announce the Winners of the Helen Gee Chin Scholarship Foundation college scholarships.

This brought the total amount to $83,000. In college scholarships awarded in the six years since Simo Helen passed away! In addition to the announcement of the winners, and presentation of ceremonial check to winners in attendance, a new fundraising campaign was announced! The Helen Gee Chin Scholarship Foundation Horse Stance Punch-A-Thon and Tai Chi Cloud Hands Wave-A-Thon! We were happy to receive the support and sponsorship of Century Martial Arts Supply. They will be offering prizes to the school/ individual who raises the most money, and the school/individuals who complete the most Punches and Waves! We have already seen videos from other schools that have met the challenge and hope to see more!

These events make for long but fulfilling days! Within the last year we have really started to use technology to better market what we offer to a broader audience. It has been a very steep learning curve, but it turns out that it is starting to pay off. Our use of technology to Livestream is something that many traditional martial artists many not fully understand. The reality is that technology is here. We can use it to market ourselves and secure a stronger position globally, or we can adhere to old thinking. I am not suggesting that there is anything wrong with the traditional path. It is the path we are all on to one extent or another. All things over time evolve. Sometimes for the better and sometimes not. As our understanding grows we can also adapt our traditional knowledge to modern technology. Even this newsletter is an example of that happening. Think back 30 years, we did not know as much about what was happening with each other, because geography was a large barrier. Fast forward to today and

However, using that technology along with a solid teaching methodology and understanding of how best to use that technology can be a very useful tool in spreading the benefits of LFHK and the popularity of it worldwide! LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN LAM CHUN FAI KUNG FU SCHOOL CZECH BRANCH Summer camp and training of kids at our Kung Fu school Written by Lucie Mrkvicová, instructor of children Our school once again has organized our annual one-week Hung Kuen summer camp for children. Also, this year’s camp was held in Hradisko, a picturesque and quiet place in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm. Twice a day, the children dedicated themselves to and were trained in the martial art of kung fu. This included practicing previously learned forms, as well as learning new ones. They developed skills of coordination, pair work, and all progressed in strength and endurance. They were also instructed in self-defense tactics, for situations that may occur in everyday. Warm-ups included games that helped build teamwork skills and also helped in knowing how to cope with potential defeat. In addition to the kung fu training, the youngsters received instruction in the English language twice a day. Lessons were presented in a fun and energetic manner, focusing on conversational skills and building a stronger vocabulary. At the camp, a great emphasis was placed on maintaining a healthy mind and body, that is why the children ate according to Chinese dietetetics here. Many of the children were not familiar or accustomed to warm breakfasts of cereal or rice porridge until they experienced them at the camp. Evenings were spent in a peaceful way. The kids either enjoyed listening to bedtime stories from the book Buddha at Bedtime which became very popular. We also watched Kung Fu Panda movies. On the last evening of the camp, the children helped to prepare a campfire on which they cooked sausages and they enjoyed their last moments together in a charming environment.

Training of traditional Kung Fu is very beneficial for children. A very important aspect of classes is the development of discipline and basic skills, such as mobility, flexibility, coordination, correct body posture, as well as development of will, endurance and power. This all contributes not only to their harmonious development but also to their self-confidence.

Another benefit that can be gained by children through training is development of concentration. It is natural that attention span of children is shorter than the one of the adults and undoubtedly it is not easy for them to remember all the techniques and movements which are part of the training. Nevertheless, during the training they get to understand that through tenacious and persistent work and when they concentrate enough on given activity, they can get better and better and this knowledge can be applied to other activities in their everyday life. Children have to learn self-discipline and that can be very useful in their personal life. Mutual respect to each other, to their Sifu, instructors and to themselves is an equally important experience which is gained from the training.

Traditional Kung Fu is a kind of martial art but children are instructed to avoid conflicts and to look for solutions to problems in a peaceful way. Many games are inserted in the training in order to help them concentrate. It is also a way to make the hard training of kung fu more

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN entertaining and attractive for young learners. More and more children coming to our school have certain health or social problems, such as attention deficit disorder, autism, etc. We are not trying to avoid working with such kids. Traditional kung fu is an excellent system that can help them. They find new friends and grow towards understanding their own path of personal development, plus the respect and joy of making progress in training, no matter how small it is. Although we teach in the traditional way, with an emphasis on discipline and obedience, we are very much aware that each child is a fragile human with an unique personality and we treat them accordingly.

When children take up martial arts, they find a great way how to release nervous energy and create some sort of inner peace. Nowadays, life is very hectic and there are more and more demands on us. If we manage to slow down a bit though training, we will find a way out from everyday worries and consequently we feel happier and more content.

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN LAM CHUN FAI KUNG FU SCHOOL CZECH BRANCH Letní škola a cvičení dětí v naší Kung Fu škole Napsala Lucie Mrkvicová, instruktor pro výuku dětí Tak jako každý rok, i letos pořádala naše škola týdenní letní soustředění pro děti, které se konalo na krásném a klidném místě v horách na Hradisku v Rožnově pod Radhoštěm. Tréninku Kung Fu se děti na letní škole věnují dvaktát denně a dvakrát denně pak mají výuku angličtiny.

Cvičení je velmi pestré a děti procvičují sestavy, které již umí, nebo se učí nové, věnují se rozvoji síly, otužování, cvičení ve dvojicích, ale také řešení možných situací v sebeobraně, se kterými se mohou v běžném životě setkat. V rámci rozcvičky je jejich program obohacen o spoustu her, jejichž prostřednictvím se učí týmové spolupráci i tomu, jak se vyrovnat s případnou prohrou. Výuka angličtiny je vedena zážitkovou formou, která je zaměřena převážně na komunikaci a rozšíření slovní zásoby formou her. Jelikož je v tradičním Kung Fu kladen velký důraz na zdraví těla i ducha, na táboře se děti stravují podle zásad čínské dietetiky. Teplé snídaně nejčastěji v podobě různých obilných nebo rýžových kaší pro mnohé z nich jsou velkou neznámou. Večery probíhají v poklidném duchu, buď čtením Buddhových pohádek, které si děti velmi oblíbili, nebo sledováním filmů Kung Fu Panda. Poslední večer se koná táborák. Děti si samy nasbírají dřevo a pak opékají špekáčky a všichni si užívají poslední společné chvíle v kouzelné atmosféře u ohně.

Cvičení tradičního Kung Fu je pro děti velmi prospěšné. Důležitými aspekty při jejich výuce je rozvoj disciplíny, základních pohybových dovedností, jako je mobilita, flexibilita, koordinace, správné držení těla, stejně jako rozvoj vůle, vytrvalosti a síly. To vše přispívá nejen k jejich harmonickému vývoji, ale také k sebedůvěře. Dalším přínosem, který mohou děti cvičením získat, je rozvoj jejich koncentrace. Je přirozené, že doba pozornosti, kterou jsou děti schopné udržet, je kratší než u dospělých a nepochybně je pro ně nesnadné, zapamatovat si spoustu technik a pohybů, které jsou ve cvičení obsaženy. Nicméně, při tréninku pochopí, že právě houževnatou a vytrvalou prací a dostatečným koncentrováním se na danou činnost, se mohou zlepšovat a tohle poznání pak mohou aplikovat i v jiných činnostech. Děti se musí učit sebekázni, což jim je velmi přínosné i v osobním životě. Vzájemný respekt jeden ke druhému, ke svému Sifu, instruktorům, i sobě samotným, je další neméně důležitou zkušeností, kterou si z cvičení odnášejí.

Tradiční Kung Fu je bojovým uměním, ale děti vedeme k tomu, aby konfliktům předcházely a nejprve hledali řešení nenásilnou cestou. Vlastní cvičení je u nich prokládáno spoustou her, abychom lépe udržovali jejich koncentraci a učinili pro ně náročný trénink Kung Fu mnohem zábavnější a záživnější. Do naší školy přichází stále více a více dětí, které mají určité zdravotní, nebo společenské problémy, jako jsou různé poruchy pozornosti, autizmus a podobně.

Nevyhýbáme se vedení těchto dětí. Tradiční Kung Fu je vynikající systém, který jim může pomáhat. V naší škole nacházejí přátelství a porozumění, cestu osobního rozvoje, respekt a

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN obrovskou radost z každého, byť sebemenšího pokroku, kterého při cvičení dosáhnou.

Ačkoliv jsou tréninky vedeny tradičním způsobem s důrazem na kázeň a disciplínu, jsme si dobře vědomi toho, že každé dítě je křehká bytost a zároveň jedinečná osobnost a jako k takovým k nim přistupujeme.

Když děti začnou cvičit bojová umění, naleznou také jedinečný způsob jak se zbavovat napětí a vytvářet si určitý druh vnitřního klidu. Součastný svět je velmi uspěchaný a na každého z nás je kladeno více a více nároků. Když se však prostřednictvím cvičení podaří se trochu zpomalit, nalezneme v něm únik od každodenních starostí, a to mán přispívá k vnitřní radosti, štěstí a spokojenosti.

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN The Inheritance of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Hong Kong 2017 – Frederick Mok, Hong Kong, Chairman of Hong Kong Mok Chun Wai Chinese Martial Arts Association As we all know, Lam Family Hung Kuen is an Intangible Cultural Heritage and passed down from teacher to student for nearly a century. It requires a lot of training to understand kung fu.

Nowadays, the pace of living in Hong Kong is quite fast, which leaves no time for people to learn and practice kung fu. In the summer of 2017, I took part in the following events to promote our Hung Kuen kung fu.

HKSAR’s 20th Anniversary at 30th June, 2017 It is a pleasure for my students and I to perform a part of Fu Hok Seung Ying Kuen (虎鶴雙形 拳) in front of the President, with other government officials of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Hong Kong Special Admistrative Region (HK SAR) during the SAR’s 20th Anniversary event. The show allowed us to broadcast Lam Family Hung Kuen to a world-wide TV audience.

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN Ling Nan Hung Kuen Exhibition at the Hong Kong Park September 2017, and from 15 th December, 2017 to 14th February, 2018 International Guoshu Association held the Ling Nan Hung Kuen Exhibition at the Hong Kong Park. It is a unique Hung Kuen Exhibition using documentary data and computer animation technology to present 3D animations of Hung Kuen. I also want to thank International Guoshu Association who invited me to teach a kung fu class at the exhibition.

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN Children’s Kung Fu Summer Camp - by Petra Lorenzova, Prague, Czech Republic This past summer was a beautiful time when most Hung Kuen schools go on holiday but in our school we held the summer camp which is the inherent part of this holiday period for most students of our school.

The summer camp is the right place to practice weapon patterns. In the countryside, nobody minds our weapons falling or flying in the air before students learn to master them.

Our camp has one week for adults, who can focus within a calm and relaxing mood, and another week for children. The younger children come with their parents, older children may attend alone. They meet other children of all ages and degrees of seniority in the school. Everybody does their best to master the new weapon and they usually succeed in the end. During leisure time, children play various games (football is the most popular) or swim. In the evening we all watch kung fu films. It’s certainly a week of intensive physical activity that we all like very much!

Our school organizes another summer activity during the holidays: city camp for children. We call it, “We are training with Kung Fu Panda” and indeed, the training programme for our children is very similar to that of this famous animated film hero. Like “Kung-Fu Panda,” at the beginning children are rather cumbersome but at the end they become little sportsmen.

We learn the basics of Hung Kuen, Tai-chi and Sanda. Of course, our lunches take place in an Asian restaurant. Besides the training, children also go to the playground just to have fun.

Another interesting experience is our participation in the activity of other organisations. At one summer camp, we organised a “Hung Kuen Day”, a repeat performance for us. In the morning we talked to the kids while showing them weapons. In the afternoon, the kids practiced themselves and it was very interesting. They learned some basic moves (punches, kicks, stances like a wide horse stance “say ping ma” (四平馬). The training was completed with some competitions and it was incredible to see how long the children remained standing in a wide horse stance.

All these activities are also very entertaining for us - the teachers. It is a pleasure to help children improve their physical abilities and pass on knowledge about our great and much -beloved Hung Kuen.

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN In Czech Léto, děti, Kung – Fu Minulo léto – krásné období dovolených, kdy i většina škol Hung Kuenu má zvláštní, prázdninový režim.

V naší škole k němu neodmyslitelně patří letní soustředění, kam se hlásí většina žáků školy.

Učí se zde převážně sestavy se zbraněmi. Příroda je pro to ideální místo – nikomu nevadí, když zbraně padají, či lítají vzduchem než se je člověk naučí ovládat.

Týden je soustředění dospělých, kde vládne klid a pohoda. Další týden je soustředění dětí. Ty nejmenší jezdí se svými rodiči, starší již samy. Setkávají se tam děti nejrůznějšího věku i pokročilosti. Všichni se ze všech svých sil snaží ovládnout novou zbraň a daří se jim to. Ve volném čase pak hrají nejrůznější hry (nejpopulárnější je fotbal), plavou se, večer sledujeme filmy s tématikou Kung – Fu. Prostě týden intenzívního pohybu, který máme všichni moc rádi.

Další aktivitou naší školy je příměstský tábor. Jmenujeme se Trénujeme s Kung – Fu Pandou a podobně jako trénoval Panda, trénují i naše děti. Na začátku přicházejí většinou neohrabané a po týdnu odcházejí „malí sportovci“. Trénujeme základy Hung Kuenu, taichi i sanda. Jíme samozřejmě v asijské restauraci. Část dne kromě tréninku trávíme na hřišti, kde si děti hrají nejrůznější hry.

To jsou aktivity naší školy, ale zajímavou zkušenost máme i s aktivitou jiných organizací. Na jednom dětském táboře měli letos již druhým rokem „den s Hung Kuenem“. Dopoledne si povídáme se všemi dětmi v táboře a především ukazujeme jednotlivé zbraně. Odpoledne pak trénují děti a je to velmi zajímavé. Naučí se některé základní pohyby (úder, kop, seipinma – mabu). Tato výuka je doplněna soutěžemi Někdy je až neuvěřitelné, jak se děti snaží, jak dlouho vydrží stát v seipinma (mabu), pokud je to soutěž.

Lingnan Hung Kuen Across the Century: Kung Fu Narratives in Cinema and Community is a retrospective of Lam Family Hung Kuen in Hong Kong over the past hundred years. The exhibition assesses the achievements of three generations of the Lam family, from the time the founder our school, Lam Sai Wing, began teaching in Hong Kong some time after 1926, through the late grandmaster Lam Cho’s reforms and innovations, to contemporary endeavours by our current head, Master Lam Chun Fai, to spread true Hung Kuen teachings overseas. Each of these masters has a dedicated panel, with an abridged biography on their lives and achievements.

At the same time, taking stock of the remarkable achievements of film-maker Lau Kar Leung, the exhibition also follows the parallel track of the Lau family since 1949. Lau Zaam, one of Lam Sai Wing’s students, took a dramatic career turn after moving to post-War Hong Kong, where the path of acting led him to star alongside Kwan Dek Hing in the early black-and-white Wong Fei Hung films. Following his father’s footsteps, his eldest son Lau Kar Leung became an actor and fight choreographer. In time he grew into one of the finest directors during the golden years of kung fu cinema, making a host of kung fu classics during the 1970s and 1980s, such as Spiritual Boxer (1975), Challenge of the Masters (1976), The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978), Martial Club (1981), etc., which played a critical role in bringing Hong Kong’s unique kung fu culture, and in particular Hung Kuen, to mainstream popular culture and consciousness around the world.

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN Kung fu became one of the most powerful symbols for Chinese culture, while film representations came to dominate popular perception of Chinese martial arts. But the creation of this modern kung fu culture began with Hung Kuen. To a significant extent, it was created through interactions and the interwoven histories of the Lam and Lau families, which forms the substance of this exhibition.

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN Documenting Hung Kuen The story of this exhibition begins with Lam Sai Wing. He was a traditional master but he was also an innovator. At a time when most martial artists closely guarded their secrets, Lam Sai Wing was among the very few in Southern China to disclose his teachings through publication. Making extensive use of photography, he personally took part in studio shoots which led to a series of manuals on Lingnan Hung Kuen’s three pillar forms, Taming the Tiger Boxing, Tiger and Crane Boxing, and Iron Wire Boxing.

Lam Sai Wing and his students wrote and published three books, including two different versions of Taming the Tiger plus Tiger and Crane. Later, his student, Chu Yue Tsai wrote the Iron Wire book after Lam’s passing. These manuals remain immensely popular and continue to be an invaluable resource for research and study, having gone through numerous reprints since they first appeared.

In the second half of the 20th century, the Lam family started to explore the use of other media tools for documentation and teaching, beginning with the use of simple videograohy in the 1970s, and progressing to the use of motion capture and 3D animation in recent years, where fourth-generation master Oscar Lam played a pioneering role through his collaboration with myself and International Guoshu Association and City University of Hong Kong.

To illustrate how the Lam family’s use of technology evolved through time, this exhibition features video display of the classic two-man set performances by Masters Lam Chun Fai and Lam Chun Hin made during the 1970s, as well as state-of-the-art 3D animation with motion analytics featuring Oscar’s performance of Monkey Staff and Lau Gar Kuen. In addition, there is a multi-screen display showing the second half of Gung Gee Fok Fu Kuen and Fu Hok Seung Ying Kuen (again performance by Oscar Lam) from five different angles.

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN 3D Lam Sai Wing Performing Tid Sin Kuen (iron Wiring Boxing) The remarkable progress of technology has made possible an attempt to construct a 3D model of our founder performing Tid Sin Kuen, which would have seemed a remote idea only a few years ago.

Making extensive use of archival photographs from the early 20th century, we have managed to build a convincing, photo-realistic 3D model of our grandmaster. Then, making use of motion capture with Oscar Lam as the performer, we began to map the motion data on to the 3D model. In order to reduce the individualistic aspect of performance as well as enhance the overall effect, we then painstakingly adjusted the model by comparing the data to Master Lam Chun Fai’s performance (a note of debt is placed here as we relied heavily on the excellent Tid Sin Kuen book and DVD which was recently published), as well as referencing Lam Sai Wing’s original photos as a final check.

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN Lau Kar Leung Kung Fu Classics Hung Kuen Cinema is another important component of this exhibition, and we have chosen to focus on Lau Kar Leung’s classic kung fu films made during his time with Shaw Brothers.

During his Shaw years, Master Lau Kar Leung produced a number of classics, among which the most famous is THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN. It was one of the ten most popular films in Hong Kong cinema in 1978 and the 24th Asian Film Festival's Best Martial Arts award winner. While Master Lau was known for bringing a realistic fighting style to the big screen, a style upheld by Bruce Lee, he also added practical kung fu elements rooted in traditional martial arts to his films, thus highlighting the heritage of South Chinese kung fu. His subsequent masterpieces, MARTIAL CLUB, THE EIGHT DIAGRAM POLE FIGHTER and MY YOUNG AUNTIE not only shored up his position as a professional director, but also made him an inspiration for arrays of action directors.

We have chosen four classic films for this exhibition, including The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, Challenge of the Masters, Martial Club, and The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter (1984). Made during the middle part of director’s Lau career, these films best illustrate his martial arts thinking and, in respect of Hung Kuen, martial arts choreography.

Out of these films, we have rendered selected scenes from The 36th Chamber of Shaolin from its original format into 3D, thus bringing the legacy of Hung Kuen cinema into the present and future.

Under the supervision of renowned Hong Kong filmmaker Shu Kei, we also made a minidocumentary on the subject of “Hung Kuen Across the Century” as part of the exhibition.

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN Hung Kuen Article: 10 Ways to Improve Your Gung Fu – Robert Miller, Canada (Hong Kong) When I first started learning Hung Kuen I was completely unaware of how large the system really is. It’s scope and depth, containing numerous hand and weapon sets (totaling 32 taolo from our Lam Family system), a dense and rich history, selfdefense applications and strategies as well as internal (noi gong) and preventative health measures still amazes me.

Occasionally, we tend to reach points of stagnation within our training regimen and develop improper habits that seem to form out of thin air. The development of bad habits may be recurrences from former habits or not really understanding the purpose of a particular movement by the student. Sometimes we may even develop in certain areas of our training only to come to the realization that we may have neglected a certain pattern within a specific set or have neglected functional strength and mobility training which will impact our performance.

To borrow a phrase from my Sifu, Hung Kuen is very much a ‘Work Horse’ system that requires a consistent and analytical level of practice. Despite it being a large system, we need to do each set mindfully so that we can continually tailor our training based on the requirements generated by the feedback from our bodies and emotions. From my experience, a technique might feel awesome and powerful and the next day you wonder if it could even harm a mosquito (Note: I am not politically opposed to mosquitos – I support what they represent but occasionally they can be annoying!).

Here are a few tips that I found helpful to get over the bumps in training whether you are trying to improve your overall practice or if you are getting ready for a competition: Focus on Improving Coordination: Problem: What do baseball players, UFC Fighters, ballet dancers, tennis players, boxers, swimmers and runners have in common? Despite seeming to have very little in common, these athletes are well coordinated and able to produce high level movement qualities that enable them to be explosive and powerful in their respective fields. From my observation, many traditional kung fu practitioners lack coordination in their practice and look terrible when using stiff movements that generate dead power (sei lik, 死力), often by tensing the shoulders and not relaxing and applying power in the right places where it is due.

Suggestion: Focus on relaxing and coordinating your body as a unit by starting from the ground with each movement to ensure that all of the major joints and body centers ‘line up’ at the end so that the feet, knees, waist/hip, elbow, wrists all begin and end together. Ensure that you are rising and sinking into your stance as appropriate. Practice lighter first to better coordinate and gradually add more power at the end of the movement. As the Cantonese saying goes: Yiu Ma Hop Yat (the waist and stance are one).

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN Address Your Mobility Issues Problem: We all have a body that has a history and each of us have our own genetic history that has been passed down to us from our progenitors over the span of thousands of years. Our bodies are also a living document from this lifetime and has adapted to the stresses from our occupation, our sitting and postural habits, our past injuries etc. One of the major benefits of Hung Kuen is that it is designed to improve our bodies by addressing mobility issues and preventing future injuries. The modern-day sedentary lifestyle has us favoring convenience over natural, healthy positions. Sitting on a sofa while drinking beer and eating potato chips is sure to create skeletal-muscular imbalances that could be prevented by resting in a natural, deep squatting position.

Suggestion: Focus on squatting to open up your hips and take time to address imbalances in the hip flexors and the muscles associated with connecting the upper and lower portions of our bodies: iliopsoas, iliotibital band, piriformis, internal external rotations of the legs etc. Our spines consist of the Cerebral, Thoracic and Lumbar sections of the spine and must be flexible - any problems with our overall structure and poor health of our feet lead to significant problems in the future. Additionally, all joints should be contracting and relaxing in the right places so it is important to engage in dynamic stretches and circular movements to release trigger points to increase the synovial fluid that protects our joints from friction. Each practitioner mobility program will have to be tailored their individual needs and seek advice from professionals when necessary.

Build Functional Strength: Problem: Now that we have discussed problems with our coordination and mobility, functional strength plays a very important part of the quality of our movement. I do not necessarily mean we all have to be Olympic lifters, but it is important to have basic functional strength to maintain the integrity of your bone structure, joints, improves our immune system, creatures new neuromuscular connections in the brain (as does coordination and mobility) and helps balance hormonal responses. Functional strength is important because if we want to improve our coordination and mobility, we must also address issues where muscles are not relaxing and contracting in the right places (i.e. muscular recruitment).

Suggestion: Strength training will also teach you more about using your body and muscle recruitment which is essential if you want to understand improving your stances and making your body more efficient. Are you punching from the shoulder instead of activating your serratus anterior and scapular muscles?

While in your horse stance are you activating your thigh muscles by balancing too much on your toes instead of being rooted on your heels to activate your glutes and hamstrings? I highly recommend kettlebell training – I am training kettlebells 5 days a week at 6:30 am for 15 minutes, followed by my other evening training 4-5 days per week. Kettlebells can help you improve your coordination, develop functional strength, improve mobility, power and explosiveness. Proper muscular recruitment is essential to delivering power and you are able to get a full-body workout and reap all the benefits by doing less but more frequently –sounds too good to be true doesn’t it? Do kettlebells and calisthenics to make your body better.

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN Be Honest with Yourself and Others: Problem: Often we continue to practice the same routine on a weekly and monthly basis but when it comes to being completely honest with ourselves our ego (and we all have one) prevents us from wanting to face the facts.

Does a section of your form require more work? Does it not look like the way the Masters do it? Do you get offended if someone offers constructive criticism? Are you able to apply any of the techniques in a real-life combat situation?

Solution: Be honest with yourself. At the end of the day we are each walking this long and arduous path alone and, occasionally, others will join us from time to time throughout our lives. Be honest with your practice, learn from others and evaluate areas which are your strengths and other areas that need improvement. If you are interested in fighting and not completely confident that you can go head to head with a Muay Thai practitioner or MMA fighter, then you might want to get practicing. Also, if you are practicing for forms competition but do not think you look as coordinated as a Wushu practitioner, then be honest with yourself and work on your coordination and flexibility so that you can move gracefully. Be honest with others and offer constructive criticism if you believe it will benefit them and only compare yourself to your own personal baselines.

Practice Softer, Slower: Problem: Rushing through movements just to complete the form? Are you getting tired midway through gung ji and half-ass the last portion of the set?

We often forget that forms are a way of downloading physical movement patterns from the past –very much like the Matrix. There is an incredible amount of meaning and complexity behind each movement and it is important to slow the movement down to get the raw feeling of it.

Solution: Practice more regularly in smaller chunks during the week and practice portions of the form separately then connect them –much like the way we construe words to form sentences and then those sentences form paragraphs. If we rush through our sets there is no mindfulness and also no improvement. Focus on coordination and try to think Why a movement is done and also How it is done whilst performing it slowly. Start by turning with the feet, waist and allow the turning of your legs to rotate the upper body which will cause your arms to move in a natural path. Apply tension near the end of the movement depending upon the technique.

Practice Mabo training and Patterns: Problem: Although the Lam Family no longer practice sitting in horse stance for extended periods of time ranging from a half-hour to several hours until the incense candle completely burns, we are supposed to be getting enough stance training from our sets. If you are not practicing your sets as often as you would like, it will definitely be beneficial to practice stance training drills.

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN Solution: Choose movement patterns that need work and also ones that you favor. For example, practicing Kay Lun Bo (the zig-zag foot patterns that are characteristic of our style), turning from Sei Ping Ma Bo to Ji Ng Ma, Ji Ng Ma to Diu Ma etc. I often do various stepping patterns outside and will do the introductory stance training patterns found in the introduction of Gung Ji Fook Fu Kuen because it contains the three basic stances: Wide Horse Stance “Say Peng Ma”, Forward Stance “Ji Ng Ma” and Cat Stance “Diu Goek Ma”.

Practice More Frequently with Less Duration: Problem: Do you live in the real world and have a life? Do you have kids, a job, responsibilities, need time to rest? Do you fail to make time for your training at least 3-4 times per week? Do you focus on trying to crunch all of your forms into one session due to life commitments?

Solution: Do less but more frequently by getting up and go to bed earlier. Research shows that the frequency is slightly more important than duration so instead of training two to three times per week for 2 hours, you might want to train in smaller chunks to improve neurological connections in the body and to keep the body mobile. Currently, I get up at 6:30 am to do a short kettlebell workout 5 days a week. Then, I train my sets, footwork, sansao drills and cross training in the evenings which is usually 4-5 days depending upon the week. So, as it stands now I am training 5-6 days a week but in smaller, more manageable chunks that are having a significant impact on my performance.

Practice Footwork and Sansao Basics: Problem: Boxers have good punches; Muay Thai practitioners have beautiful kicks, knees and elbows; Brazilian Jiujitsu practitioners have the ability to center their body and taking away your base having you feel like you are struggling to stay afloat. My question is: What good techniques do you have? Do you practice forms but do not take into consideration my previous points? Do you have heavy, clanky feet and have no clue how to deliver a good strike in a stance better suited for combat? Is your cardio poor?

Solution: I understand that not everyone participates in sparring and we each love our art so much for our own reasons. However, I suggest practicing sansao basics – basic footwork, lead punches, feints, blocking and hitting etc. by downloading a Tabata timer on your smartphone. It is a type of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) that will improve your overall capacity to metabolize oxygen within the cells and improving your viscosity. The timer will last 20 seconds on and 10 seconds off eight times for a total of four minutes – this makes up one round. Do several rounds and start off light, standing higher in your hard stance and focus not only on offense but defense. For example, I love using elbow combinations for both offensive and defensive purposes.

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN Do What Your Sifu Told you to Do the First Time: Problem: You didn’t listen to your Sifu the first time. Or better yet, I didn’t listen to my Sifu the first time. It is also not our fault. Wisdom comes from years of practice and when our teachers whom have many years of experience tell us something, they are telling us out of experience. We must train harder and just be in the art longer to be able to appreciate the knowledge they are sharing with us as well as the fruits of our own labor.

Solution: Our teachers are there to guide us and even though we may not understand why they are asking us to do something, it is because we haven’t climbed the slightly higher mountain than the one we are currently standing on. With great practice and persistence and respect to your Sifu, you will both be able to stand together on the same mountain someday.

Live a Happier Life and Set an Example for Others: Problem: You are unhappy with yourself and it is reflected in your practice.

Are you unhappy due to personal issues, unhappy with certain circumstances in your life? Are you having financial troubles or other lifestyle related problems? Are you a keyboard warrior that spends more time on Facebook complaining about another Sifu’s post rather than focusing on your own craft? Do you have poor attendance in class? Do your emotions prevent you from being a better version of yourself that impacts your consistency with training?

The importance of having a community of people who are all walking very different walks of life provides us with the opportunity to understand different perspectives; allowing us to try and understand that we are all on our own personal journeys and very often another person’s fresh outlook may inspire us to face our own trials and tribulations. The beauty of Hung Kuen is that it spans all walks of life: different ethnic backgrounds, different ages, genders, skills and experiences. This is what leads to social harmony in a world that is divided and I am grateful for our beautiful, diverse and enriching community that spans multiple geographies.

Solution: Aim to be happier in your life and always appreciate your personal struggles more than your victories because they are what will allow you to adapt and become stronger. Over time, you might find yourself adapting faster to the ever-changing circumstances and you gain wisdom in the process. Be empathetic so that you can help that little kid down the street who has self-confidence issues and change his life –you might even gain a student. Show respect to your peers and other martial artists instead of being confrontational and arrogant because you might gain new training partners who are there to help you on your journey. Remember, what you say about others is more of a reflection of yourself. Be positive, help others when you can. Make yourself happy first so that you can lead by example.

Be honest with yourself and you will be able to make progress in Hung Kuen for the rest of your life. ~ End~

by Nikolai Doll, Germany Travelling to a different country is always a bit of an adventure and an enriching experience to me. Especially if I can combine it with a group of friends who share the passion for movement, who are open to learn from one another and despite it being a tournament in which we compete, always keep the positive spirit of friendship thank you very much to all my kung-fu brothers and sisters for making this tournament another unforgettable and precious experience.

Seeing people from all over the world, across all age groups, coming to together to perform was totally enjoyable. We have all been training hard to perform to the best of our ability and in my view this already makes us all champions! In the end it is our willingness to compete, our continuous effort to work on ourselves and trying to improve that keeps us in good and healthy spirits.

Thank you everyone for making this a great event, something to look forward to and something that brings a bit of focus into our lives. It was sad to hear that Sigung Lam Chun Fai had to stay back in Hong Kong due to a serious illness. We hope he will recover soon and be able to join us again soon.

This year’s tournament in Italy was again a great experience for our team and we returned to Greece with more knowledge and comprehension of the Hung Kuen forms and the great importance of the bonds that unite our Hung Kuen Family.

In this tournament our school participated in the seminars that our Sifu Massimo Iannaccone organized and taught as well as in the Hung Kuen competition, where we won one silver medal in the “Hand Set Forms” category by Kiki Zagouraki presenting Fu Hok, one bronze medal in the same category

by Alexandros Charambakis presenting Chin Cheung and one bronze medal in the “Single Sword Set Forms” presenting Pe Kwan Da Do. Returning to our beloved island Crete, we organized a ceremony for the

presentation of all the audio-visual material collected from the tournament and the awarding of the belts and various levels of our students.

In addition, our school changed location and this has given us the chance to reinvigorate our spirits and goals for the upcoming season.

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN Grandmaster Y.C. Wong - 50th Anniversary Celebration

by Sifu Michael Goodwin On September 2nd, 2017, more than 400 students, associates, and friends from around the world came to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Grandmaster Y.C. Wong. A large banquet was held in his honor at the Far East Cafe, located at 631 Grant Street, in San Francisco’s famous Chinatown. Speakers included Sifu Bill Lee of Yau Kung Moon Kung Fu and Lion Dance Association, and California State Senator Scott Wiener. Festivities began with a traditional “eye-dotting” ceremony, and then Lion Dance by Y.C. Wong Studio, Tiger Crane School (Simi Valley), and Wong Gar SF. Kung Fu performances followed, with masters including Kurtis Fujita who performed the iron thread set, Ales Kocian, the Pek Gwa single broadsword, Errol Lockhart, praying mantis Bung Bo set, Jeffery Lam of Hawaii showed the “I” pattern tiger subduing set, and his son, Jordan Lam, performed the plum blossom double dragon knives. Master Peter Pena from Arizona, as well as additional students from France, Italy, and Austin, Texas had also booked a table but were unable to attend, due to travel conditions caused by hurricane Harvey.

As dinner was served, the senior master and grandmaster performances continued, included long-handled great sword vs spear by Tony Wong and his daughter, Megan Wong, single broadsword vs spear by Aaron Wong and his son, Kyle Wong. Wong Feihung mother and son double knives was performed by Darryl Wong, fifth brother’s eight trigram staff by Les Wong, and double chain whips by Michael Goodwin. Grandmaster performances included My Jong Law Horn and Tai Chi Praying Mantis Grandmaster Raymond Wong showing the Do Ga single dagger, and Shuai Jiao Grandmaster Daniel Weng showing the Chang Dong Sheng Taiji form. Then, for the grand finale, Grandmaster Y.C. Wong himself performed the Hung Kuen five animals and five elements set. This was performed with great power and grace, at over 85 years of age!

Grandmaster Y.C. Wong was born in Hoiping City, Guandong, in October of 1937, and began his Kung Fu studies at the age of six, under his father, Wong Ming Kwong, who was a student of Great-Grandmaster Lam Cho. In 1950, he moved to Hong Kong with his father, where both continued to study under Great-Grandmaster Lam Cho, at the Lam Sai Wing Physical Culture Academy. Some years later, Grandmaster Y.C. Wong was appointed to the level of assistant instructor, and became known for his performances on the Grandmaster Lam Chun Fai demo team. In 1960, Grandmaster Y.C. Wong opened his first school in Hong Kong, and three years later, immi-

Other Lam Family pioneer instructors of overseas Hung Kuen at this time included Tang Kwok Wah, Lee Yat Ming, Kwong Tit Fu, and Buck Sam Kong. In 1967, Grandmaster Y.C. Wong opened his school in San Francisco, where he has been teaching ever since. In 1968, Grandmaster Y.C. Wong, together with Brendan Lai, Chris Chan, and Jack Man Wong, organized the first major Kung Fu demonstration in USA at the San Francisco Civic Auditorium, and in 1976 Grandmaster Y.C. Wong performed together with Grandmaster Lam Chun Fai, Grandmaster Buck Sam Kong, and “Monkey King” Grandmaster Chan Sau Chung, at Grandmaster Buck Sam Kong’s 1976 East-West Kung Fu Exhibition, touring Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Hawaii. Grandmaster Y.C. Wong is also a long-standing member of the Suey Sing Association, and has been active in fund-raising for charities including Chinese Hospital, Self-Help for the Elderly, as well as new year celebration Lion Dances for the Suey Sing Association.

With a foundation in Lam Family Hung Kuen, Grandmaster Y.C. Wong has also studied numerous Kung Fu methods, including Tai Sing Pek Gwa from Great-Grandmaster Ken Tak Hoi, and Taiji, Pakua, and Xing I systems under a variety of teachers. Grandmaster Y.C. Wong’s personal philosophy is summarized in the following credo: “Chinese Gung Fu has had a long developmental period.

Its extensive scope and profound principles put it in a class by itself. There are many branches and styles, all originating from the same concepts. Those who desire to understand the true meaning of Gung Fu should seek out qualified instructors and train with skilled friends. Extrapolate the techniques and forge your style with diligent and constant practice. Be sure to avoid laziness and procrastination. Guard against arrogance and boastfulness.

Do not be easily provoked. Seek to analyze with an open heart and open mind. Those who have mastered the art should use it honorably. Teach and help others so many can benefit. Propagate Gung Fu so that the art will endure.”

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN My Hung Kuen Journey

I am Cristiano Silva, a disciple of Sifu Richard Leutz and Sigung Lam Chun Sing, representative of the Hung Gar style in Brazil. As such, I am responsible for the company "PBKF Brazilian Kung Fu Project of Araçatuba State of São Paulo" and representative of "AGTKF Kung Fu Tiger Claw Association",.

I have achieve some titles and passages in international tournaments, where I excelled and obtained experiences for the continuity and development of the Hung Kuen style, most recently in the European Hung Kuen Competition held in Sessa Arunca, Italy on July 1st and 2nd.

I won first place in the "Taolu Lau Gar" demonstration and second place with "Taolu Gwan Leun Gim", bringing two awards from Europe to the American continent.

I was respectfully received by Sifu Massimo Iannaccone and Sifu Patrizio who explained to me all the ceremonies and workings of the events.

Although I have been practicing Hung Gar for a year, I was quite successful on my journey, getting third place with the "Taolu Gwan Leun Gim" in the 2nd Word Hung Kuen Competiton held in Foshan, China on November 18-20, 2016. I am a migrant from a northern school where I was a student for about 25 years and was named Sifu in 2014 by her.

Along my way I majored in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), graduated with a degree in Pedagogy, Provided in Physical Education, Master h.c. in Human and Cognitive Sciences, Health and Martial Arts, Doctor h.c. in Human and Cognitive Sciences, Health and Martial Arts.

My trip to Europe was splendid. I spent 90 days training, studying, researching, visiting historical monuments and improving my curriculum in Chinese medicine. I visited three countries, among them Portugal, Spain and Italy.

I have been a Christian since birth and for this reason I believe that we are all brothers within kung fu, independent of nation or label, so I greet all my dear brothers of the Hung Gar nation with my sincere applause and vows of esteem, hoping they and their families stay within the Holy Peace of the Great God that we serve.

Fui respeitosamente recepcionado pelo Sifu Massimo Iannaccone e Sifu Patrizio aonde me conduziram e explicaram todo o protocolo a ser seguido.

Apesar de penas 1 ano praticando Hung Gar consegui bastante êxito em meu trajeto, obtendo terceiro lugar com o “Taolu Gwan Leun Gim” no (2nd Word Hung Kuen Compettiton) realizado em Foshan – China nos dias 18 a 20 de novembro de 2016, pois sou migrante de uma escola nortista onde fui estudante por aproximados 25 anos e fui intitulado Sifu em 2014 por ela.

Para o enriquecimento de meu legado agora faço parte integralmente da família “Lam” por intermédio de meu Sifu Richard Leutz que tem me confiado essa representatividade na qual deposito meus préstimos, saudações e total fidelidade.

Ao longo de meu caminho me formei em MTC – Medicina Tradicional Chinesa, Licenciado em Pedagogia, Provisionado em Educação Física, Mestre h.c. em Ciências Humanas e Cognitivas, Saúde e Artes Marciais, Doutor h.c. em Ciências Humanas e Cognitivas, Saúde e Artes Marciais.

Minha passagem pela Europa foi esplendida onde passei 90 dias treinando, estudando, pesquisando, visitando monumentos históricos e aprimorando meu currículo em Medicina Chinesa, com a oportunidade visitei três países, entre eles esta Portugal, Espanha e Itália.

Sou Cristão desde meu nascimento e por esse motivo acredito que somos todos irmãos dentro do kung fu, independente de nação ou rotulo, por isso saúdo a todos os meus queridos irmãos da nação Hung Gar, com meus sinceros aplausos e votos de estima lhes desejando que fiquem coma Santa Paz do Grande Deus que servimos a cada um de vocês e vossas famílias.

LAM FAMILY HUNG KUEN Lam Ga Hung Kuen School of Rethymno ("Yperion" Tiger and Crane kung fu Club)

by Theo Amarantos It was once again our pleasure to accept Bailando Fuerte's invitation to participate in their annual dance charity festival, one of our city's most important charity events for children with Autism. It is our honor as a school to help the local community, especially since kung fu is about helping people and not harming them.

The audience exceeded 1,800 people who were looking forward to seeing our show. A lot of our students took part and tried their best to give a memorable performance.

I would like to thank all of them for their effort and dedication. I would also like to thank my Sifu, Kostas Tsoligas who accepted our invitation and participated in the show as well.
