Dear All: I hope everyone had a great summer. My summer was very good. Recently I was interviewed by China Central Television for a program about the history of the Lam Family Hung Kuen and the Blue House. It was quite an honor for me to talk about my family’s Hung Kuen art, which is the closest thing to my heart.

Another exciting news is that the Government of China is planning to build a museum for my grand-uncle, Lam Sai Wing and my father, Lam Cho? Two government officials, the Assistant Director and the Head of the Business Unit from China came to meet with me and we discussed a plan to build the museum in Foshan City (佛山市),Nanhai County (南 海縣) to commemorate the two Hung Kuen legendary icons!

By Cathy Jonston Canada Day is the national day and a federal statutory holiday of Canada. It celebrates the anniversary of the Constitution Act, July 1st, 1867. The Calgary Hung Kuen School put on an exhibit of Hung Kuen martial arts at the Chinese Cultural Centre in Calgary for the public to view. The purpose was to promote the Chinese culture and martial arts in Canada.

Krátké ohlédnutí za poslední návštěvou u velmistra Lam Chun Faie v Hong Kongu, která se uskutečnila v květnu 2018.

Nezapomenutelný – takový byl letošní Hong Kong. Každý den začínal ranním tréninkem s naším sifu na kopci nad zastávkou stanice metra North Point. Následovala všemi oblíbená snídaně v malé restauraci nedaleko hotelu City Garden, kde si tradičně dáváme congee a red tea. A poté konečně každodenní cvičení s velmistrem Lam Chun Faiem ve Victoria parku.

Nezapomenutelné bylo cvičit s velmistrem nejpokročilejší sestavu našeho stylu – Tid Sin Kuen, která byla hlavním tématem našich tréninků. Čas strávený v okouzlující a inspirující společnosti sigunga je pro nás cennější, než všechny soutěže a mistrovství světa. Nejde pouze o cvičení ve Victoria parku, které pro nás bylo obrovským přínosem, ale i o všechny okamžiky plné smíchu a radosti, které sigung rozdává na potkání.

Nezapomenutelné byly také obědy a večeře nad lahodnými hongkongskými pokrmy, kdy po každé večeři následovalo popíjení zdravotního bylinného čaje v naší oblíbené „čajovně“ na King´s Road u pana Li. On sice nemluví našim jazykem, my nemluvíme tím jeho, ale naše společná a upřímná radost z opětovného setkání slova nepotřebuje. Letos jsme si dokonce odvezli recept na přípravu nápoje na podporu trávení, který si vždy dáváme, takže si jej nyní můžeme připravit i doma. Nemohla jsem se ubránit dojmu, že šlo letos o výjimečné rodinné setkání, při kterém nás velmistr svým jedinečným způsobem zasvěcoval do tajů tradičního kung -fu a svou láskou k životu a neutichajícím elánem nás v mnohém inspiroval. Znáte ten zvláštní pocit, kdy víte, že jste svědkem něčeho výjimečného a neopakovatelného? Tak takových okamžiků jsme tam každý den zažívali spoustu. Velmi příjemné byly i relaxační odpoledne, která jsme často trávili pobytem u moře na ostrově Cheung Chau, nebo také setkáním s přáteli jako Cathy Johnston a jejími bratry, a Hingem Chao apod.

Všichni si velmi vážíme toho, že nám náš sifu umožňuje tato nádherná setkání, na které pak s láskou vzpomínáme.

Ačkoliv můj pobyt v Hong Kongu trval z pracovních důvodů jen dva dny, na kráse mu to nijak neubralo. I kdyby setkání s velmistrem trvalo pouhý okamžik, stálo by za to. První ráno jsem před sigungem cvičila moji nejoblíbenější sestavu – Kuan Lam Gym. Toho dne nám počasí velmi přálo. Následující den nás však překvapila průtrž mračen. Čekali jsme na velmistra pod stříškou ve Victoria parku, pršelo více a více a my jsme se pomalu smiřovali s myšlenkou, že již nepřijde. Jak milé bylo naše překvapení, když se spolu s April s deštníkem v ruce objevil. Pod jeho pečlivým dohledem jsme pak cvičili zbraňové Doy Da, a také některé ruční sestavy.

Dokonce i April si s námi zacvičila formu Lau Gar Kuen. Byly to kouzelné chvíle. Jako by se zastavil čas. Velmistr vysvětloval techniky, jejich aplikace a mluvil i o historii.

Před odjezdem jsme se se sigungm a April ještě sešli na poslední pozdní oběd. Připravili jsme mu malé překvapení – narozeninový dort. Připomněli jsme mu tím jednu z jeho myšlenek, která se nám velice líbí: „Každý den, kdy se člověk ve zdraví probudí, má vlastně narozeniny.“ Jarka

Unforgettable – one word that perfectly describes this trip to Hong Kong. Every day started with training with our Sifu on the top of the hill above the North Point MTR station. It was followed by our favourite breakfast in a small restaurant close to City Garden Hotel. In the traditional manner, we had congee with red tea. And then, finally we had our everyday training with Grandmaster Lam Chun Fai in Victoria Park.

Practicing with the Grandmaster – Tid Sin Kuen, the most advanced form of our style, which be-

came the main focus of our daily trainings, was also unforgettable. Time spent in the charming and inspiring presence of Sigung was more valuable for us than all the competitions and championships in the world. It was not only about training in Victoria Park, which was an immense benefit for us all, but it was also about the Grandmaster´s sparkling personality. He is full of joy, which makes him a great companion for anyone to be around.

More unforgettable moments were experienced during our lunches and dinners, which consisted of delicious Hong Kong dishes. After each dinner we visited Mr. Li in our favourite “teahouse“ on King´s Road in order to have a cup of herbal health tea. Although he doesn´t speak our language and we don´t understand his, our sincere common joy from meeting each other again didn´t need any words anyway. This year, we even received a recipe for preparing the tea that we always have there – health beverage that helps digestion, so we can have this drink in our home town as well. I couldn´t get over the impression that this year´s visit was a unique family gathering. During these meetings we were engaged by the Grandmaster in secrets of traditional kung fu in his unique way and his love for life and immense vitality inspired us greatly. Do you know the feeling when you know deep in your heart that you are witnessing something exceptional and unrepeatable? Our days were full of such feelings. Relaxing afternoons spent by the sea in Cheung Chau island were also very pleasant, as well as meeting our friends, such as Cathy Johnston, her brothers, and Hing Chao, etc.

We really appreciate that our Sifu makes these dream visits come true for us. We always refect on these meetings with fondness.

Lucie My Hong Kong stay was only for two days, due to a business trip. In spite of this, it was amazing indeed! If the meeting with Sigung took only a moment, it would still be worth it. On the first morning I practised in front of the Sigung my favourite form – Kuan Lam Gym. That day, the weather was pleasant, but the following one, there was a sudden heavy rain. We were waiting for Sigung under a small roof in Victoria Park and as the heavy rainfall was getting more intense, we were slowly adjusting to the idea that he wouldn´t be coming that day.

What a lovely surprise it was when he appeared in front of us together with April, holding an umbrella in her hand. Under his thorough guidance we practised two men sets with weapons, as well as some empty hand forms. Even April practised the Lau Gar Kuen form with us. It was a wonderful time that went by so quickly. The Grandmaster explained techniques and their applications. He also spoke about related history.

Before our leaving we met with the Sigung and April for a late lunch. We surprised the Sigung with a birthday cake as a remembrance of one of his sayings that we are very keen on: “Everyday, when you wake up in the morning, feeling healthy, it is your birthday.“ Jar

STUDENTS OF SIFU PAVEL ADÁMEK

By Donald Hamby May 15,2016 the Gather of the Masters became a reality. It would be a gathering of martial arts styles that ranged from hard to soft, internal to external. Master Hamby, wanted to welcome a fellow martial artist from China into our martial art community in Los Angeles’s historic Chinatown at Alpine Park. A call was sent out by Master Hamby, through social media inviting Masters from around the country to share in his reality. His aim was to create a bridge of friendship and respect between the two cultures through the exchange of traditional Chinese martial arts. Masters from far and wide showed up and took part in a celebration known as the “Gathering of the Masters.” It was a day to remember!

June 23 2018, marks the third annual Gathering of the Masters, and was held in Monterey Park, California. Master Hamby is proud to announce: it was a huge success!

Thanks to all the Masters, Grand Masters, Sifu’s and students for their outstanding support. A special thanks goes out to Sifu Rose Trenado and Sifu Theodore Henderson, sponsors and the Traditional Chinese Martial Arts Federation, for helping to weave the fabric of a successful and well organized gathering of martial arts excellence. rd

Special thanks to Master Fred Lee for an awesome display of Hung gar’s signature set Tiger and Crane, and Master Michael Goodwin’s stunning performance of the Hung Kuen double chain whips, plus his devoted son Sifu Nigel Goodwin’s outstanding display of spear vs. double daggers. The two man fighting sets really fascinated the audience. Some of the audience had a new-found respect for women in the martial arts after they saw how strong Sifu Rose Trenado was when she demonstrated the Tiger/Crane two man fight set with her Sifu Master Don Hamby.

Internationally known Rose Trenado is Master Hamby’s top student. In 2014, she won a Gold Medal in the First World Wong Fai Hung Tournament. Food was provided by the TCMAF. Certificates and plaques were provided by Master Donald Hamby.

June 26, 2018, Master Hamby and his top student Sifu Rose Trenado set the stage on fire with an awesome display of Sup Ying Kuen, two-person and solo sets and the Wu Long Bag Qua pole set at the Annual Lotus festival In Los Angeles.

Aug 8, 2018, Master Hamby and Sifu Rose Trenado were invited by the Traditional Martial Art Federation to perform the two man Tiger/Crane set to help celebrate the City of Los Angeles' 237th birthday. October 6, 2018, Hamby’s Tiger/Crane school will compete in the Annual Tempt One Tournament for which Rose Trenado previously won two Grand Championships.

As Master Hamby says: "We as martial Masters must fan the flames of traditional Chinese martial arts into a raging fire for the next generation to follow!"

The iconic Hung Kuen legend, Wong Fei Hung was born on 9th July, 1851 (lunar calendar), according to his wife, Mok Kai Lan Sitai (莫桂蘭師太) (1915-1982). He passed away in 1924 at the age of 73. His actual birthdate of 1851 was different than what the Wong Fei Hung museum indicated “1847”. Wong Fei Hung was born in Nanhai County (南海縣), Foshan City (佛山 市). Wong was originally from Xiqiao (西樵), Luzhou Village (祿舟村), Nanhai County (南海縣).

Wong Fei Hung was named one of the famous ten tigers of Guangdong.

By Michael Panagiotakis Lam Ga Hung Kuen School of Rethymno (A.C. YPERION) Over the last few years our school has created a summer class called " The Little Shaolins". Through this programme our little students work out, play, and learn how to gain self discipline.

Child's play, the way we might think of it, doesn't exist any longer, so we decided that we can offer it through the treasures of Hung Kuen. Hopefully this might eliminate the need for the latest technological gadgets. Plato (ancient Greek philosopher 427B.C - 347 A.D) said that we should have a healthy mind in a healthy body.

Young people’s overall health, and physical fitness are under threat from computer and mobile phone screens. It’s a main reason that face-to-face communication with friends and peers are decreasing.

Every summer, through our training programme we are trying our best to help our young students to stay on track though quality exercise and play - to sweat and strengthen, to focus on their goals and not to give up, to love and respect themselves and others around them.

Through Hung Kuen, we offer solutions and propose new ideas to help the "Little Shaolins" meet their needs. It is truly remarkable how a 200-year-old system can offer us, and future generations, so many things.

It is the best "anti-virus" programme out there!

By Joseph Y. Wong, student of the late Master Tang Kwok Wah Dr. Huang (1910-1999) was an acupuncturist, qigong master, and martial artist. He had been a student of the famed Tiger-Crane Master Lam Sai Wing, who had learned, in turn, from Wong Fei Hung. Dr. Huang was used to hard training and knew how to make the bone strengthening tonic wines as well as the “Did Da Jau” bone setting lotion necessary to treat martial injuries. But his real secret to health was the Chinese tea that he consumed with every meal.

Dr. Huang’s favorite tea was a mixture of pu-erh tea (普洱茶)with Chinese dried chrysanthemum flowers (菊花). According to Chinese medicine, pu-erh aids digestion and prevents bad cholesterol from accumulating in the arteries; chrysanthemum helps the liver spread qi (life force) throughout the body. Pu-erh is slightly yang and warming, chrysanthemum slightly yin and cooling-a perfect balance. But he drank other teas as well. From ancient times to the present, tea has been an important facet of martial arts and Chinese medicine. No matter what the doctrinal or stylistic differences, everyone agrees that it is important to drink tea. It is the great equalizer.

What is Tea “Cha”?

Before discussing the importance of tea, it is important to understand something about the plant. There are five major ways to process the tea leaf, resulting in five unique tasting beverages: white tea, green tea, oolong tea, black tea, and pu-erh tea. It's all the same plant. White tea consists of young leaves and buds and produces a lilac-scented, spring-like bouquet. As the leaf matures, it turns first bright green and then darker green. Pick and dry this leaf and you have green tea. If the tea leaf is slightly bruised by, for example, compressing it under a stone or turning it in a barrel, and then left in a moist environment, it starts to interact with oxygen and turn red. The semi-oxidized leaf is called oolong. To produce a fragrant oolong, the leaf is dried while it is still mostly green.

If you wait longer and dry the leaf after most of it has turned reddish-brown, then the brew is rich and dark, like a fine Bordeaux wine. If the leaf is allowed to fully oxidize, it becomes what the Chinese call hong cha, red tea, and which Westerners inaccurately label "black tea." Finally, there is a type of tea made from leaves grown in southern Yunnan province that has a completely unique flavor. This is pu-erh tea. The most famous pu-erhs are called "ripened" or "cooked". This means that the leaf is partially or, more commonly, fully oxidized, creating a brew that is earthy and peaty, like a single malt scotch. A good cooked pu-erh is complex and smooth, a poor (and much less expensive) pu-erh may taste like an old barn mixed with stale and slightly bitter mushrooms. Green or "raw" (sheng) pu-erh has an equally unusual taste, like a wild

mountain meadow - expansive and somewhat musky, without any sourness. Like fine wines, raw pu-erh gets better with age, peaking at about 15 years.

The best teas are "single estate teas," which means that they each come from a single plantation, rather than consisting of a mix or blend of teas from various areas. When you drink a single estate tea, you are supporting a specific farm and tasting the pride of the farmer and the many people who help harvest and craft the leaf. "Two leaves and a bud" per picking; this is the common saying, though in fact some teas are picked leaf by leaf or by the handful. Depending on the weight of the leaf, it may require anywhere from 2,000 to more than 10,000 pickings to make a single pound of tea. Each leaf is checked for quality. It must be whole or nearly whole in order to fully release its flavor. In many of the best teas, the leaves are turned, folded, bent, twisted, rolled, or curled in a specific way so that, as the tea steeps, it gradually releases its flavor and aroma. For example, a green tea in which the leaf is folded in half to resemble a sword (tai ping hou kui) produces a different brew than a green leaf that is coiled into the shape of a small snail (bi luo chun).

Fine teas are like works of art; the color and shape of the leaves are appreciated in the cup or by peeking into the teapot. But the leaves are only the raw ingredients; the other half of the art is how you prepare the tea. Brewed correctly, flavor fills the palate and lingers afterwards. There is an initial taste and aroma, and a secondary taste and aroma lasting several minutes after the last sip. In Chinese this is called the "return flavor". Unfortunately, most of the teas we buy at the grocery store are neither skillfully crafted nor capable of producing a pleasing return flavor. The leaves are sheared and ground by machine, and they taste like it!

The good news is that today you can find excellent loose-leaf teas at tea shops/houses, gourmet Tea and Qi: The Health Benefits For martial artists, the chief attraction of tea is its ability to prevent disease, increase energy, spread qi (like qigong), and shorten recovery time after an injury. Chinese medicine classifies tea as bitter. Bitter is the flavor that has the most beneficial effect on the heart. Chinese medicine also relates the colors of foods and plants to various organs or systems. The green color of the tea leaf corresponds to the liver. Tea helps the liver rid the body of toxins and, because liver function influences muscles and nerves, drinking tea dissolves tension. Tea is also great for the eyes and eyestrain. According to Li Shizhen's sixteenth century classic, Materia Medica: Principles, Categories, and Details (Ben Cao Gang Mu), tea relieves thirst, improves digestion, and leads to mental clarity. Other early works claim that tea increases strength and creates feelings of contentment. It has long been considered an elixir of immortality.

These benefits and more are supported by western medical research. In 2006, the Journal of the American Medical Association reported the results of an eleven-year study of more than 40,000 subjects. There were 16% less deaths, from all causes of mortality, among green tea drinkers compared to non-tea drinkers. That same year the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported a study of 1,003 subjects over age 70. The more green tea they drank, the less cognitive impairment. In other words, if you want to keep your mind sharp and prevent Alzheimer's, drink tea! Equally impressive studies document that tea is antiviral and is helpful in combating the flu virus. Tea is also antibacterial. In ancient China, powdered green tea or chewed leaves were applied as external poultices to stop infection from wounds and insect bites. Modern experiments confirm these effects and also show inhibition of staph, salmonella, cholera, and the bacteria that cause tooth decay.

Tea is an important adjunct in the fight against the two major killers of our age: heart disease and cancer. In 1993, the Lancet reported that when 805 elderly men were tracked for five years, those who consumed black tea regularly had half the rate of fatal heart disease compared to those who drank less tea. Interestingly, tea is effective even if one begins drinking it after a heart attack. Harvard Medical School conducted a four-year study that found that subjects who drank two cups of green or black tea each day had 44% lower death rate after an initial heart attack compared with people who didn't drink tea. There are three major reasons why tea has such positive effects on cardiovascular health: Tea plants and seed pods 1.Tea lowers cholesterol. Rats given a high cholesterol diet and fed chemicals extracted from tea had a 16.7% reduction in cholesterol absorption. A 1992 Israeli study of 5,369 factory workers found that the more black tea they drank, the less total cholesterol and the less LDL (bad cholesterol) and the more HDL (good cholesterol). One of the reasons for these effects is that catechin, a type of chemical in tea, inhibits the body's production of lipase, an enzyme that helps the body absorb fats. This same chemical is also as effective as aspirin in preventing blood clots from forming (and with far less harmful side-effects).

2.Tea prevents inflammation and oxidation. In fact, tea has 200 times the antioxidant power of Vitamin E. Why is this important? Reactive oxygen, produced by stress and various metabolic processes, rots the body the way it rots an apple (notice how an apple turns brown after you take a bite-it's the oxygen effect). When the oxygen interacts with cholesterol and arterial plaque, the resulting inflammation may block the blood vessel, resulting in a heart attack. Tea prevents this from happening.

3.Tea creates a calm, peaceful state of mind. It has an amino acid called L-Theanine that is structurally similar to seratonin, a mood-regulating biochemical.

Some of the most impressive research demonstrates how and why tea prevents cancer. A chemical called epigallocatechin gallate, found in highest concentration in green tea, prevents the enzyme urokinase from promoting tumor growth. In 1994, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute reported that men and women who drank as little as one cup of green tea per week for six months had, respectively, 20% and 50% less risk of developing esophageal cancer. The Laboratory of Cancer Research at Rutgers University found that when mice were given green tea to drink, 87% of all skin cancers were blocked, 58% of stomach cancers, and 56% of lung cancers. A University of Minnesota study of 35,000 women over an eight year period found that those who drank two or more cups of green or black tea per day had a 10% reduction in risk developing any cancer, compared to those who rarely drank tea. At the microscopic level, tea prevents mutation of cellular DNA, explaining why it is especially important to drink tea if you are exposed to carcinogenic substances, such as cigarette smoke.

The list of health benefits goes on and on. Tea improves bone density, normalizes blood sugar, and helps with weight loss. To get the best results, it is important to drink three to five cups per day, including shortly after a martial arts workout. As with any change in diet, consult with your physician to make sure that you don't have a health condition that would make tea inadvisable, for example caffeine intolerance, ulcers, or cardiac arrhythmia. Tea is a powerful aspect of complementary medicine, not meant to take the place of necessary medical treatment.

Tea and the Martial Artist Perhaps the most important reason why martial artists love tea is that it improves alertness and attentiveness. After drinking a cup of tea, one feels, paradoxically, more relaxed and more awake. Tea alters consciousness, not only because of its chemical constituents and biological effects, but because to prepare a delicious cup of tea, one is required to slow down and enjoy life's passing moments. No wonder tea was called "the divine medicine" by Japanese tea masters, who sometimes served it on the battlefield. After a cup of tea, meditatively prepared and consumed, one is beyond the dualities of life and death, in a state of pure being. The tea drinker can face battles without fear, whether in life or in the ring. Kung fu tea set up with "red clay" yi xing teapot, tea boat, ceramic "tea ocean" decanter, and cups.

How to Prepare Tea Brew only loose tea leaves. No tea bags. No metallic or plastic "tea ball" infusers. Tea leaves need room to open and "breathe" their fragrance into the water. When you add tea to a cup or pot, use a wooden or bamboo spoon (or scoop), never your hands! There are three basic ways to prepare tea: (A) Western style in a teapot, (B) Chinese style in a specially designed ceramic or porcelain teacup called a gaiwan (covered cup), and (C) kung fu style in a ceramic yi xing ware teapot.

White and green teas brew best in porcelain. Oolong may also be brewed in porcelain, but only yi xing ware brings out the full flavor. Black and pu-erh teas may be steeped in any style of teapot.

By Frederick Mok As we all know, Lam Family Hung Kuen is a global family. I have heard the same message at Grandmaster Lam Chun Fai’s 1st book launch in 2013.

“Frederick, we welcome you to visit USA. Please feel free to contact us when you are coming.”

These were the messages that I received from various Hung Kuen masters in USA. In fact, this is my very first time to visit USA. First, it took me a very long time to apply for a US visitor’s visa. Second, it is a super long flight from Hong Kong to America. In the very beginning, I don’t have my Tisikung student’s contact. I was planning to visit Sifu YC Wong, Sifu Michael Goodwin in San Francisco, then visit Sifu Calvin Chin and also pay respects to my ancestors (my Tisikung Tang Kwok Wah) in Boston. Thanks to Sifu Michael Goodwin who gave me Sifu Yon Lee’s contact, so that I can visit him and his school.

These years, I have visited or help to hold some Hung Kuen class, seminars for overseas friends and students every year. I have discovered that most of them have a better learning attitude and modify the old style teaching method and the result is less forms, more foundation movement and it’s very interesting! Even though it is tougher and needs more time for the beginners, but they are still willing to focus on their quality and don’t feel confused by too much information.

Their performance would be better and feel easier as they work for a long term goal. This method is not often found in Hong Kong nowadays. It makes me have an idea to modify my teaching system to be more interesting as well, and save time to teach the unusual forms until they are really ready to learn.

On the other hand, it would great to create a platform like an exchange programme for Hung Kuen practitioners around the world to visit and train together in different Lam family Hung Kuen schools each summer to broaden their horizons. It may help to build our friendship and network.

And also represent a Lam family as ONE family image for all.

Finally, it would nice for me to have opportunity to build up international Hung Kuen Martial Artists exchange programme in foreseeable future if possible.

By Andreas Garski Last few months were filled with mainly lion dance activities. Our team was booked on various occasions, for example lot of weddings, some city festivals (opening ceremony Chinese garden in Trier/Germany—partner city of Xiamen/China) and at least for a very big marathon. Therefore we had to do lion dance to support and motivate the more than 10.000 runners and to entertain the audience for 5 hours—a marathon for our team as well. Lion dance is still not very popular in Germany. So we are proud that our team gets more and more attention and the booking requests for big events in Germany are becoming more and more too. Unfortunately sometimes we have to decline because our team members are all at work at the requested time or needs a free weekend after all the performances.

Besides regular seminars in our own school seminars, private lessons and tournament preparation with Andreas Garski Sifu were successfully organized in Prague by his student, Sifu Petra Lorenzova in April 2018. She also travelled to Karlsruhe in July to take private lessons and learned the Mui Fa Sheung Bin “Double Whip Chains”.

As time goes by students are coming and going for various reasons (age, work, moving to another city, becoming parents, loosing interest) or just get older. And so our long time competition team is now in a big change too and needs time to grow again. New students started to become some experience in smaller tournaments as for example in July 2018 during the South-German Wushu Competition in Heidelberg, organized by DWF e.V. (German Wushu Federation, member of European Wushu Federation & member of International Wushu Federation). Three students took part in hand- & weapon forms and got the result of 1 x 1st. Place, 1 x 2nd. Place, 1 x 4th place. Not bad for the first time. The next competition will be end of October in Senden (near Ulm). But this year our school won´t take part on any competition and seminars outside Germany ...even not in Hong Kong or China. We will see how the competition team is developing in future again.

Next year the excellent exhibition, Kung Fu Motion: A Living Archive” - will be in Germany—in our hometown Karlsruhe only. So it seems that our school will be a part of the opening and maybe other events there too.

Tenho que ter a consciência que treinar “Lau Gar” vai além de performances, não necessariamente ajudará meu aluno vencer um MMA, mas com certeza ajudara ele a vencer o Bulling, a diferença social, o racismo, o abuso e assédios, também contribuirá com a saída do sedentarismo, a confraternização e compartilhamento do saber entre todos os presentes no mesmo ambiente marcial, pois um aluno médico, pode em exemplo, ajudar aquele que faz a limpeza de um hospital e o aluno que faz a limpeza pode contribuir com o médico nas áreas de sua atuação que ele não teve tempo de enxergar. Esses fundamentos faz de um simples “Lau Gar” vencer guerras cotidianas como as citadas neste parágrafo.

PBKF & AGTKF, the Brazilian Kung Fu Project "Cristiano Silva Method" is an innovation in the martial market created by Dr.h.c. Cristiano Silva in order to attend children and adolescents with numerous psychological, physical and social dysfunctions.

Many parents and students seek the PBKF in order to add informal learning (governed by moral and civic education) to formal, social and family learning. The pedagogical method is the supply that helps in the different areas of learning, allowing diagnosis of dysfunctions in the area of knowledge that enables cognitive, congenital and chronic improvements.

Our school is located in the city of Araçatuba, interior of the State of São Paulo, Brazil.

We are all representatives of the "Lam" family, the wonderful thing about all this is that we are all over the world spread by a diversity of places and professions among doctors, therapists, military, technicians, entrepreneurs, freelancers, managers, communicators, students. What allows us to be differentiated is the union and the traditional understanding that makes us a family that is immense and respected worldwide.

Driving a mark is not enough to put it on the chest, but it is worth representing it with pride and honor so that we can inherit future warriors who take our places and continuity in all that we struggle to keep alive.

The purpose of kung fu is to shape, invest in the recovery of a social or environmental environment, transformation of being in favor of good manners, conduct and more, I usually say that "kung fu" means "living wisely" for they notice that most of our predecessor teachers were great activists, they fought for an oppressed people

and for a more just place. Today what makes us to be masters or Sifus ?, The medals ?, Titles ?, Diplomas or status ?.

I have to be aware that training "Lau Gar" goes beyond performances, it will not necessarily help my student to win an MMA, but it will certainly help him overcome Bulling, social difference, racism, abuse and harassment. the emergence of sedentariness, the sharing and sharing of knowledge among all those present in the same martial environment, for a medical student, for example, can help the one who does the cleaning of a hospital and the student who does the cleaning can contribute with the doctor in the areas of his performance that he did not have time to see. These fundamentals make a simple "Lau Gar" win everyday wars such as those cited in this paragraph.

I would like to express my greetings to all the brotherhoods of the Lam family, many applause for this information vehicle and their initiatives, as well as my cordial greetings to Sister and Friend Catherine Johnston, Editor Chris Toepker, Editor-in-Chief Grand Master Lam Chun Fai, my Sifu Richard Leutz and Sigung Lam Chun Sing.

By Sifu Lucien Zoll, Boston I am very honored to be able to submit an article to the Lam Family World Wide Newsletter. In this submission I will attempt to give an overview of what we as a school have been up to since our last update.

As usual we at CCMAA have been quite busy. In June of this year we promoted the Helen Gee Chin Scholarship Foundation Fundraiser show. This was the culmination of many hours of coordinated effort by many at our school. One of the themes of this event was the geometry of Kung Fu. Many of the performance pieces were performed in diamond, circle, figure eight and other

shape formations. Many performances had as many as 30 performers each! The audience at the Newton North Theatre enjoyed the show full of action and variety. The show was also streamed live online this year and is still available at no charge at our website at: http:// www.calvinchin.com/video/ The 7th annual fundraiser show also had us meet a significant benchmark. Since the foundation’s inception 8 years ago, we have awarded USD $100,000.00 in college scholarships to 49 students from 28 different Kung Fu Schools in 17 states across the country. This is just the beginning of a significant milestone. There are much work to be done as students struggle with the ever-rising costs of higher education. We are up to the challenge as we continue to honor the legacy of our beloved Simo Helen Gee Chin.

CCMA Open House Fund Raising – June 2018 The last weekend of July we had a team compete at Master Nick Scrima’s International Chinese Martial Arts Championships. This was the 20 anniversary of this great competition was held in Orlando, Florida This event had around 1,500 competitors from all over the world. With 9 competitors we won 15 Gold medals, 6 Silver, and 4 Bronze as well as the all-around grand champion cup in both the Teen and Adult Women categories. When they were not competing, our team members took the opportunity to visit Disney world and surrounding attractions and to enjoy themselves at the hotel pool! th

The last weekend of July we once again went to Baltimore to compete! This year was a world Kuoshu Federation event. The World events are held every three years, and this was the first time that a TWKSF world event was held in the USA. In order to represent Team USA at this world event, athletes had to qualify by making it into the top two spots in an adult advanced division at the International qualifying event last year. In addition to 12 competitors in the other events we also had three members qualify last year and represent Team USA at worlds this year. They were Kaitlyn O. Yong, Kiana Lee, and Mari Goldstein. As a school we won 17 Gold medals, 6 Silver and 4 bronze. In addition, with the assistance of our members, Team USA won the all-around Championship cup beating out 16 other countries in events including traditional hand and weapon kung fu form, Tai Chi hand and weapons forms, Tai Chi Push Hands, and Full Contact Lei Tai (Sanda) This was a great event that we were all proud to be a part of.

This event represents the pinnacle of competitive experience. Widely regarded as the best run and most organized tournament bar none! We also had CCMAA’s own Sifu Alex Woo and Eric Kolaczyck working hard as judges throughout the weekend in multiple events. On a personal note, I was also happy to get an opportunity to put my training as an International Referee B into practice, as I played both scoring and executive referee on the world stage. The seriousness of the task at hand was not lost on me, and if I said that I wasn’t nervous that would be a lie! I learned a lot from both the training and the experience and I know that I will pursue the skills to be an effective International Referee for a long time to come.

In addition to competing as a school we are very involved in the community at large. We often are invited to perform in community events like Spring Festival and August moon festival in Boston’s Chinatown. These events offer us an opportunity to give something back to the community that we are a part of and at the same time, hone the performance skills of our students. We enjoy staying active and the audience response is always positive.

As I mentioned in the last newsletter we are in the process of expanding into the existing warehouse space that we occupy. We are waiting on the landlord to move a couple of things around. In the meantime, we have had blueprints drawn up and are sourcing materials we will need when the landlord is finally ready for us to take possession of the space. We have also expanded our schedule to allow us to better serve all of our students as we grow.

For the second time Sifu Leon Dogan’s (Loong Fu, UK) student and by now good friend, Mustanir Ali made time to visit with us, both working out in classes and also socializing when he found himself here for work.

More recently we had Sifu Frederic Mok, student of Master Mak Che Kong of Hong Kong pay us a visit as well. Participating in class with us and also socializing. These visits offer us and our students a unique insight into the high quality and consistency of our Lam Family Hung Kuen around the world. The commonalty in technique and also shared passion are something that I am happy to say unite us all more than we may give thought to day to day. These interactions bring that sharply into focus and we are thankful for it!

Lastly, we are preparing to send a team to represent LFHK and team USA at the WHKA Championships and Master Lam Chun Sing’s Warrior’s Cup. This year our Sifu won’t be able to attend because of our expanded class schedule but he sends his best wishes for success of al LFHK competitors worldwide! We will do our best to represent our Sifu and Grandmaster to the best of our abilities and we always look forward to interacting with our Lam Family from around the world!

Interviewing my Sifu Calvin Chin – Lucien Zoll, Boston Once again, I am honored to submit an article to the Lam Family Hung Kuen worldwide newsletter. I want to tGrandmaster Lam Chun Fai for providing this forum and also leadership of Lam Family Hung Kuen. Also, I wish to thank Cathy Johnston and all who contribute their efforts to the this endeavor. Last but not least I want to thank my Sifu of 34 years Calvin Chin for his guidance leadership, and friendship over the years.

In July of 2017 Sifu Massimo Iannaccone Lam hosted the European Hung Kung Competition. This was an excellent event open to Hung Kuen practitioners from all over the world of any lineage.

There were representatives of LFHK (Lam Family Hung Kuen) from Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Canada, and United States of America. Before the competition there were two days of seminars during which a panel of Sifus representing each country were convened and questions asked from the crowd. One of the most interesting and productive exchanges occurred when the question was asked; ”What challenges do you face promoting LFHK in your country/area?” The answers were quite diverse and interesting.

The memory of this thoughtful exchange was the inspiration for me to interview my own Sifu Calvin Chin and ask him similar questions. The results are as follows. I hope that you will find it interesting and perhaps it can spur more dialogue among this great group of people worldwide who share a common love and respect for our Lam Family Hung Kuen. In the following interview I will ask the questions and Sifu Calvin Chin will answer.

Lucien: What are your thoughts on how people learn LFHK?

Chin Sifu: As someone who has been doing LFHK for almost 6 decades, I’ve seen traditional Chinese Martial Arts evolve from when I first started to now. In that time, I’ve come to realize that people learn predominantly from mimicry. They just copy the movements as best they can, without any real depth of understanding. This is understandable and appropriate in the beginning stages. What is most commonly lost in transmission of information is deep understanding of what we are actually trying to achieve with the movements within the form. They provide a strategy for self defense and also an understanding of how to move the body efficiently in the way it was designed. Without muscular conflict.

Lucien: How have you seen traditional Chinese martial arts evolve in the United States. What challenges do you feel exist and how many of those are remnants of the past?

Chin Sifu: When Kung Fu first came to America, people from different martial arts backgrounds were exposed to it. One of the things that attracted people to the Traditional Chinese martial arts (TCMA), were the stylistic characteristics and the length of form sequences. A lot of these martial artists adapted the movements and techniques to their particular style. That alone, would alter the perception of what TCMA was by the public at large. Then in the 60s and early 70s.

TCMA masters emigrated to America. Of course, form was something that they taught. They built a following and those people learned the form sequence. 40 years later, and people are still learning form sequence. Many that teach do not have very deep understanding beyond the level of sequential form. This also can affect the way that the general public views TCMA today.

What is being done to counteract this? What are people doing that works, and what can we learn from what people are doing that doesn’t? We have to be prepared to ask difficult questions of ourselves. What is Hung Kuen lacking? I’m not asking in regard to LMHK as a system. I’m asking the question in regard to what we are doing to promote it and teach it. Using TCMA to create a following and keep them over time is something that we at Calvin Chin’s Martial Arts have been able to do. We’ve done this consistently since 1971 with my Sifu Kwong Tit-fu through present day. We’ve developed a format capturing the hearts and minds first as students and then as a community. This is something we can be proud of. There could be lessons in what we have done that could benefit members of the LFHK community worldwide. There are things that we have done that could serve as a model. Only because we have learned through our experience over many years. If anyone has any interest learning more about the ways that we have found success, we welcome them to contact us and continue the dialogue. We are not suggesting that we are the only school out there that have developed an effective teaching methodology. There are many with in LFHK that have our respect. They may also have come to different approaches or methodologies. A dialogue could still be very useful.

Lucien: What do think are some solutions to these challenges? What would you describe as some of the keys to your success thus far?

Sifu Chin: I think it is important to have an organized format and/or standardized approach. Over the years it has been a struggle at times to quantify skill levels among students. This is particularly important because we must teach to the individual’s level/understanding not the height of our own.

As I mentioned the first level of learning is sequential. Everyone starts here. Taking things beyond this level requires the guidance of a person of true mastery. Great Grand Master Lam Cho was such a person. In fulfilling his mission to promote LFHK he taught a few people to a very high level of understanding. These people were considered “Indoor students” A lot of those people are gone now. We are all fortunate to have Grand Master Lam Chun Fai at the helm of LFHK, carrying on the traditions of his father. At Calvin Chin’s Martial Arts Academy we have built a “commercial school”. Commercial in the sense that we have grown over the years into a school that has 250+ students and we are expanding our space and growing. Teaching large numbers of students in a centralized space has required that we utilize an organized and systematized format for teaching.

This format has allowed us to be reasonably successful teaching not only a lot of students, but to retain a majority of those people over the long term 22+ years at the Newton school. Our teaching methodology has evolved over time to teach beyond a level of form with out watering down the curriculum. One thing that has contributed to this evolution is that I do this full time, and every day. While we are all trying to promote LFHK and some to make a living. Some will be hesitant to enter into a dialogue thinking that we are all fighting for our relatively small slice from the same pie. We must be bold and united to make the Pie bigger instead of worrying about the individual slice. All of this is meant to be constructive and respectful of everyone’s experience with an eye towards improving the future for us all.

by Sifu Michael Goodwin Whenever thinking of Great Grandmaster Lam Cho’s outstanding students, the name of Grandmaster Tang Kwok Wah (1924-2011) is always prominent among them. Beginning his study of Lam Family Hung Kuen with Great Grandmaster Lam Cho at the age of eight, he was adopted as a son. He learned the Lam Family martial arts, Dit Da herbal medicine, and was one of the principal instructors in Lam Kwoon, along with Great Grandmaster Lam Cho’s own sons. In 1963 he opened his own school in Hong Kong, emigrating in 1973 to the United States, where he lived for the remainder of his years. His teaching students in the United States today, include Grandmaster Winchell Woo (Boston), and Grandmaster Yon Lee (Harvard University). The lightning fast two-man set demonstrations of Grandmaster Tang Kwok Wah and Grandmaster Lam Chun Fai are especially well remembered, especially the double knives vs. spear!

Therefore, I was both honored and delighted to be invited by Grandmaster Yon Lee earlier in the year, to visit his Harvard Tai Chi Tiger Crane Kung Fu Club at Harvard University, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and to have a chance to experience and better understand the legacy left to Lam Family Hung Kuen by the late Grandmaster Tang Kwok Wah. I was asked on behalf of Harvard University to facilitate an introduction with the World Hung Kuen Association’s President, Grandmaster Checkley Sin Kwok Lam. Within hours, Boston lobsters were being flown to Checkley Sin’s household in New Territories, courtesy of Hon. Raymond L. Flynn, former Mayor of Boston, Massachusetts and US Ambassador to the Vatican.

Upon arrival in Boston, Checkley Sin was first ushered to Boston city council chambers, where the occasion of his visit was honored with a commemorative proclamation by Councilman Edward Flynn, on behalf of the City of Boston. Next, was a meeting with the City of Boston Office of Busi-

ness Development, where Checkley Sin was presented with local film industry options and incentives, as well as exploring options available in China. Some 20 years earlier, a “sister state” trade status between Massachusetts and Guangdong had been authored by Grandmaster Yon Lee, providing foundation and further paving the way for this discussion. Lunch at the posh Durgin Park restaurant, located in Boston’s historic Quincy Market district was followed by a meeting with Dr. Sean Palfrey of Adams House and representatives from Harvard University Office of Development, where scholarships, endowments, and program funding were the subject of discussion, with one of China’s most successful Kungfu film producers. The result so far has been Grandmaster Checkley Sin’s preliminary offer of fully funded internships for ten Harvard students each summer, beginning in 2019.

On May 25 , 2018, Grandmaster Checkley Sin was presented as keynote speaker for the Ilya Chalik Memorial Lecture on Shaolin Culture. The subject was “preservation and promotion of Chinese culture and arts through film making: Producing and directing the Ip Man series,” complete with a martial arts demonstration, ably assisted by Ip Man action directors Sifu KK Yiu and Sifu Marvel Chow. The show concluded with my own performance of Plum Blossom Double Chain Whips, in honor of Chinese culture and martial arts preservation, Lam Family Hung Kuen, and the late, Great Grandmaster, Tang Kwok Wah. th

I greatly enjoyed the hospitality Grandmaster Yon Lee’s student, Sifu Michael Showstack, and of Grandmaster Winchell Woo’s students who assist Grandmaster Yon Lee, Sifu Tim Lavallee, and Sifu Deb Sukeforth. Grandmaster Yon Lee and these students shared with me an understanding of Tang Kwok Wah Hung Kuen, Qigong, and the “Five Elements Tai Chi,” a collaborative development between Grandmaster Yon Lee and Grandmaster Winchell Woo. Not to be confused with the ubiquitous art of Taijiquan, “Five Elements Tai Chi” is a formula based in Hung Kuen principle, polarized in five phases, specializing on the soft bridge, and is unique to Grandmaster Tang Kwok Wah’s research in his later years. As Grandmaster Winchell Woo was on business in Hawaii, I was unfortunately unable to meet with him during this visit. Grandmaster Yon Lee remembers fondly the Harvard visit of Great Grandmaster Lam Chun Fai in 1994, and hopes to invite him again, and also other Hung Kuen masters interested in cultural preservation and exchange, for the first Harvard University Hung Kuen Summit, to be scheduled in Autumn of 2019.

On May 27 and 28 , the 1 United States Lion and Dragon Dance Federation national championships were held in Quincy, Massachusetts. Hosted by Sifu Nelson Ferreira, Sifu Mai Du, and Sifu Phong Vo, Grandmaster Checkley Sin was a guest of honor. Lion dance teams from all over the USA were present at this gala event. I was likewise pleased to meet Lam Family Hung Kuen brothers, Sifu Lucien Zoll and Sifu Alex Woo, both of Boston’s Grandmaster Kwong Tit Fu linage, through Grandmaster Calvin Chin! th

In another pleasant development, I was visited in San Francisco this August by Sifu Frederick Mok, who is also a Tang Kwok Wah lineage member through his student, Sifu Mak Chi Kong. His Sigung, Grandmaster Chan Chi Keung, learned from Grandmaster Tang Kwok Wah, and is still teaching in Hong Kong. Introductions were made, and a pleasure to have again facilitated a Tang Kwok Wah lineage reunion!

In summary, one of the greatest joy and benefits that we can experience today, is our interaction, and our exchange. Thus, I hope to see all of you at the 3 Wong Fei Hung Cup and 1 Lam Sai Wing International Warrior Cup Championships in November of this year! rd

Greetings all!

As always, I’m amazed and humbled by our worldwide community of Hung Kuen practitioners. I am always motivated to reach out further, learn and do more!

In this edition, I wanted to share a small but important lesson: meet up with your Si-Hings, Si-Baks and the wider Hung Kuen family. See how they perform the sets. Learn how they view the lineage. Touch hands with them and compare what you’ve learned with what they have. Getting perspective from those who have been steeping in the practice for longer can point out habits you’ve picked up that weren’t meant to be there and help you express better kung fu. By researching more broadly, we can see more clearly into the history of our tradition, pulling on the many threads that make the tapestry. This keeps things interesting and will take us all into the far, far future.

In this spirit, I’d like to thank Michael Goodwin for his long hours of patience in working with me. It was a pleasure and a privilege to be drilled and educated like a long-lost brother, alongside his son and long-time students. I could not have felt more welcomed, and nothing was held back. I hope that someday I can repay the favor not only to him, but our greater kung fu community!
