INFILL HOUSING + CARRAIGE HOUSE IN SAVANNAH

Inspired by Alvaro Siza’s work, this project makes use of the pinched courtyard and strong angled lines which make up both the exterior and the interior shape. the resulting form consists of the two masses, carving out to separate themselves and be completely independent from each other. the use of rigid rectangular geometry also helps create some of the extruded forms. the two forms are almost completely symmetrical except for the extrusions on the long street facade, which give the illusion that a similar condition would take place on the opposite side of the building as well, were the next building not there.

The carriage house is a project centered around the idea of creating a livable space within a small site, and making it a cohesive unit with a strong identity. in order to do this, the proposal looked to Alvaro Siza’s work, and incorporated the pinched courtyard by breaking up and shifting imaginary rectangles at angles from each other. the idea behind adopting this concept was to create light and allow for a private moment within the entire unit, rather than looking out to the front and back of the facade for light and nature. the theme of angles was also introduced to the roofs, which were pitched to create even greater emphasis on the inner courtyard.
