IN THE NEWS CAL POLY LAUNCHES PACKAGING CERTIFICATES The 100-percent online course will cater to packaging industry professionals on the critical subsets of the packaging value proposition in a global context. Courses for the Packaging for Logistics and Supply Chains Certificate will launch in fall 2017. Packaging Value Chain Certificate courses will be offered in fall 2017 and winter 2018. Packaging Program Director and Professor Jay Singh said classes taken through the certificate program are also transferable into Cal Poly’s M.S. CENTRAL COAST LEAN WORKSHOPS EDUCATE LOCAL LEADERS Central Coast Lean hosted a lean accounting workshop in June, led by expert Jerry Solomon, focusing on how to fuse efficient operations. In August, it hosted a leandriven innovation workshop led by lean champion and author Norbert Majerus. The events drew local leaders from professional service firms, manufacturers and health care institutions. CAL POLY RANKS AMONG TOP 100 UNIVERSITIES FOR BUSINESS MANAGEMENT EDUCATION The Journal of Education for Business ranked Cal Poly among the best universities in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand for research on business and management education. Cal Poly rates 71st of 100 of the schools listed, and is 17th among master’s universities. The ranking places Cal Poly fourth in the state of California; seven CSU campuses made the list. http://bit.ly/2wR3zy0

FIRST YEAR MENTORING PROGRAM LAUNCHES Orfalea has launched a new mentoring initiative aimed at providing every incoming freshman with an upperclassman First Year Mentor, officially launching this fall 2017. The First Year Mentoring Program was a product of student feedback around the positive influences mentors provide to student development, campus community, and impact-driven learning. First Year Mentors provide freshmen with tailored support in transitioning to Orfalea, integrating academic and social opportunities, and building community at Cal Poly. Over 200 First Year Mentors completed Part I of training during Spring Quarter 2017 (see pictures). Mentors will attend Orfalea’s Student Leadership Retreat and complete Part II of training prior to Fall, and plan to meet their freshmen mentees at WOW Academic Day. The First Year Mentoring Program will be coordinated through Orfalea Student Services.

CAL POLY TO BE SMOKE AND TOBACCO FREE In an effort to promote a safe and healthy campus for our students, faculty, staff and guests, the California State University (CSU) system will implement a “smoke and tobacco free” policy, effective September 1, 2017. The policy prohibits any use of cigarettes, cigars, pipes, electronic smoking devices, tobacco products, chew tobacco, tobacco accessories, vaporizing liquids, and any other tobacco utilization devices by students, staff, faculty and visitors on campus or in vehicles parked on campus. OUR TEAM MARKETING FACULTY RECEIVE GRANT TO STUDY AUGMENTED REALITY AND FOOD CHOICE The Cal Poly Research, Scholarly and Creative Activities Grant Program granted marketing professors Brennan Davis and Joachim Scholz $15,500 to conduct their research project, “Can Augmented Reality Shape Food Choices and Reduce Waste in a University Cafeteria.” With the help of Cal Poly STRIDE Director Suzanne Phelan, Davis and Scholz will study “the positive impact augmented reality an have on food consumption and sustainability,” according to their grant application.


FAST FACTS In spring, Carlos Flores was promoted to Professor of Economics and Ziemowit Bednarek was promoted to Associate Professor of Finance. Both were also granted tenure. He spoke on “Using a Trademark Perspective to Create a Business Name.” http://bit.ly/2vSLzW8. Additionally, the Santa Barbara NewsPress profiled Stern’s creation of the Mobile Law Center to make business law services more accessible to the Central Coast Community. http://bit.ly2vr8g1w Lee Burgunder published an article in IPWatchdog in July 2017 titled, “Copyright Preemption in the Smart Phone Society: The Ninth Circuit Clouds the Issue in T3Media.” The article examines copyright law relating to images shared on social media. http://bit.ly/2vT3wVu Packaging Professor Jay Singh will visit Jinan University in China as a guest professor before the end of 2017. Singh toured universities throughout China, including Jinan University, in winter to discuss the growth of Cal Poly’s Packaging Programs and explore potential collaborations. Jason Lepore co-wrote an “argument” piece for Foreign Policy on the diffusion of military technology for foreignpolicy.com. The piece discussed the pace of weapons research and development in the U.S. and its impact on foreign adversaries. http://atfp.co/2vq6JZr. The piece was also picked up by the Chicago Tribune. http://trib. in/2hNUPWb Eduardo Zambrano presented the paper “Liberal-Libertarian Optimal Tax Policy” at the 18th Annual Meeting of the Association for the Public Economic Theory, which took place in Paris from July 10th to July 13th, 2017. The conference was hosted by the Paris Center for Law and Economic (CRED) of the University Panthéon-Assas Paris II. Lisa Sperow sat as a Judge Pro Tem for the San Luis Obispo County Superior Court, Small Claims Division in July and August. Sperow also gave the minimum continuing legal education (MCLE) presentation titled, “Top Ten Tax Traps for Small Businesses and How to Avoid Them,” at the September 6th meeting of the Woman Lawyers Association of San Luis Obispo County. Cal Poly’s Packaging Program was recently awarded $42,500 in grant funding by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service via the National Mango Board. The funds will enable faculty members Jay Singh and Koushik Saha to explore the development of mango packaging and palletization with the aim of improving fruit quality and transportation. The project will run through January 2018. Professor Rami Shani published research with his coauthors recently. In the Journal of Change Management, Shani and coauthor David Coghlan published “Inquiring in the Present Tense: The dynamic mechanism of action research.” He also published a chapter “Knowledge and Practice: A historical perspective on collaborative management research” with coauthors Benjamin Alexander and R.V. Tenkasi in the book Academic-Practitioner Relationships edited by Bartunek & McKenzie.

ZHANG AND NEILL COLLABORATE ON CONFERENCE PRESENTATION Jingwei ‘Quinn’ Zhang, a visiting scholar from Yanshan University in China, and Stern Neill presented a paper at the 30th Global Research Symposium on Marketing and Entrepreneurship August 8-10 in San Francisco. The presentation was titled, “Shaping Organizational Identity as an Adaptation Strategy: Identity Dynamics in New Venture Context.”

KATHURIA PRESENTS PACKAGING RESEARCH AND MENTORS RESEARCH STUDENT Packaging Professor Ajay Kathuria was invited to speak at the Medical Device Packaging and Labeling Summit in San Jose June 26-27. His presentation, “Forecasting Medical Device Advancements: Smart Packaging and Nanotechnology in the Food Industry” discussed how consumer packaging advances in nanocomposites and silver nanoparticles can translate to food packaging. Kathuria also mentored international undergraduate student Dangkamol Wongthanaro from Kasetsart University, Thailand, as she completed her two-month summer internship at Cal Poly. Her work was focused on fabrication and characterization of polymer-graphene nanocomposites.

PATTY DAHM RECEIVES THE DAVID PEACH EXCELLENCE IN TRAINING AWARD FOR 2017 The committee, including emeritus faculty Mike Stebbins, current faculty and students, was able to reach a unanimous decision, saying “Dahm is consistently recognized by her students as a passionate, dedicated, caring, and knowledgeable teacher. Her years of work experience as an HR professional help her enhance the experiential nature of her classes. She yearns to help students focus on actual learning rather than mere grades. She has also been instrumental, alongside Ben Alexander, in revising and updating the MHR concentration. One student summed it up with the following comment: ‘Awesome teacher, really cares. She’s the reason I wanted to concentrate in this.’”

RAMI SHANI’S EDITED RESEARCH VOLUMES CELEBRATES 30 YEARS Professor Rami Shani’s most recent edited research volume was just published. 2017 marks the silver anniversary of the Research in Organizational Change and Development series, founded in 1987 by Dick Woodman and Bill Pasmore, edited for the last nine years by Rami Shani and Debra Noumair of Columbia University. This volume includes contributions by a few authors who have published in the first few volumes, where they examined the impact of research published in the series since the first few volumes were published. Also included in the volume are a few new scholar-practitioner contributions viewed as high impact potential.

STUDENT SUCCESS STUDENTS EXPLORE SPAIN AND MOROCCO Cal Poly’s latest Orfalea International Business Tour led by Marketing Lecturer Lisa Simon and Advisor Katelyn O’Brien took 16 students to Spain and Morocco June 15-27 for an in-depth look at businesses and culture in the region. The tour adopted the focus of “So Close, Yet So Far: Exploring the Contrasting Effects of Business in Morocco and Spain,” which allowed students to meet experienced leaders in a variety of business sectors, learn about entrepreneurial networks, and survey the economic landscape and industry practices of Casablanca, Marrakesh and Barcelona. http://bit.ly/2uK8vm5

CAL POLY TEAM EARNS HONORABLE MENTION AT WORLDWIDE BIOMIMICRY COMPETITION A team of Orfalea students was among the top finishers at the Biomimicry Global Design Challenge. Coached by Marketing Area Chair Norm Borin, the team included John Davidson, Ben Christensen, Lara Sly, Alexian Alton and Finnegan Warfield. The team took on the competition’s theme of climate change adaptation, mitigation and reversal. It created a proposal, titled “EvapoPalm,” which designed an innovative solar-powered metro stop to mitigate the consequences of Melbourne’s urban heat island. http://bit.ly/2wQPoch

STUDENT VINCENT PORTER BLOGS ABOUT HIS SUMMER INTERNSHIP AT BRANDFOLDER Porter writes, “One of the most valuable takeaways for me arising from this internship involves the opportunities I experienced witnessing and participating in the process of selling Brandfolder’s software, beginning when a lead first reaches the sales team, all the way to when new clients are being trained on the software, post-sale. Additionally, I gained great experience and learned a tremendous amount from the sales, customer experience, and marketing team members.” http://bit.ly/2vTk3sh

MARKETING STUDENTS LEARN BY DOING WITH SAMBAZON Students in BUS 346: Principles of Marketing kept the Learn by Doing spirit alive by tackling a client project during the first five-week session of summer quarter. In the course taught by marketing faculty member Susan Bouvette, student teams worked with Sambazon, which produces organic juices and frozen treats with fair-trade Amazon superfoods like açaí. Each team formed an agency and tackled one of the campaigns by conducting research and making strategic recommendations using core marketing principles. http://bit.ly/2vnaG2N

LOW INCOME TAXPAYER CLINIC MAKES MAJOR IMPACT IN SIX MONTHS In the first two quarters of 2017, Cal Poly’s LITC, led by students and faculty, helped dozens of clients dealing with tax controversies. As of June 30, the clinic: •

hosted 15 outreach events and six educational activities

worked on 52 cases which covered 151 different tax or legal issues ranging from identity theft to innocent spouse to employee misclassification

handled four cases pending in the United States Tax Court

decreased clients’ tax liabilities by $351,228

STUDENT ATHLETES EXCEL ON AND OFF THE FIELD A group of 16 student-athletes from the Orfalea College of Business were placed on the All-Academic Team by the Big West Conference, Pac-12 Conference or Mountain Pacific Sports Federation following the 2017 Spring Quarter for their achievements in the classroom. These student-athletes maintained a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 and competed in at least 50 percent of his or her team’s events this year. Several student-athletes from the Orfalea College of Business also earned firstteam all-conference honors and, in some cases, all-region or All-America honors, including Ted Scranton (men’s track/ industrial technology), Lindsey Chalmers (softball/ finance), and Spencer Howard (baseball/ management and HR). http://bit.ly/2fw1KTh


ALUMNI CAL POLY TO CELEBRATE “HONORED ALUMNI” DURING HOMECOMING NOV. 2-5 Lisa Hufford (International Business ‘93), founder and CEO of Simplicity Consulting, will be named the Orfalea College of Business’ 2017 Honored Alumna. Hufford has served on the Dean’s Advisory Council since 2014 and has been a long-time supporter of the college and the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. MARKETING ALUMNUS TO JOIN CAL POLY ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME Alumnus and football standout Craig Young (Marketing ‘00) will be inducted into the Cal Poly Athletics hall of fame in September. Young is Cal Poly’s career rushing leader with 4,205 yards from 1996-99, including a pair of 1,000yard campaigns in 1997 (1,038 yards) and 1999 (1,380 yards, No.4 all-time). Young currently is Director of Marketing Executive with Merill Lynch Wealth Management in Pasadena, responsible for offices in Pasadena, Glendale, Bakersfield, Arcadia and Palmdale. http://bit.ly/2vl5MmL

FINANCE ALUMNA NAMED MARKET PRESIDENT OF BANK OF THE SIERRA Kelli Blackburn (Finance ‘04) was named the Bank of the Sierra’s market president for the San Luis Obispo area. In her new role, she’ll oversee operations of five branches, including the Pismo Beach location scheduled to open later in 2017. MBA GRAD EARNS BOSTON UNIVERSITY PROFESSORSHIP Alumnus Sean Martin (MBA ‘06) was recently named the inaugural Mancini family Sesquicentennial Assistant Professor at Boston College’s Carroll School of Management.
