In 2017, Cannon Design merged with Bennet Wagner Grody Architects to expand their firm expertise. The group focuses on their design approach, ”Living Center Design”, to create a user forward design. Cannon Design mostly focuses on hospitals and medical centers and occasionally crosses over with university based projects. Previous projects include the UC San Diego Health Center, Uber Advanced Technology Group Center, and Children’s Hospital of Colorado & Colorado Springs Memorial Hospital.

Initial Reflection With the beginings of our research, The Colorado State University Health and Medical Center is a Wellness Center that not only serves and sufficiently meets the needs of the CSU Students, but supports the greater Northern Colorado Community. The building employs new “high-tech” techniques to integrate changeable audio and visual simulation in the first floor reflection space. The designer’s utilized systems thinking by leaving the fourth floor unfinished and therefore available for the center to grow into the space as needed in the future. The project was able to respond to the two recieved large donors and create a space that is open for the communities use.

Project Background The Health and Medical Center was not only built for the Colorado State University campus, but also the Northern Colorado Community. The school was aiming to congregate their scattered and aged 1964 mid-century buildings under one roof through the new four-story medical center. With the support of Cololumbine Health Systems and University of Colorado Health, a new facility with medical, counseling, and public healthcare services became possible with a design emphasis on collaboration and teambased care with high-tech reflection spaces. The Kendall Reagan Nutrition Center has expanded into the building since the completion date. UC San Diego Health Center

Colorado State University Health and Medical Center STORY: Findings Over the course of the quarter, our research on the Colorado State University Health and Medical Center has mainly led us to learn about the integration of mechanical systems, that daylighting was not a design factor that drove the project, and that utilizing a common and practical building form can successfully achieve the programmatic needs of a building, but not necessarily the goals of a building. Prior to diving into the project, we had no assumptions on what the mechanical systems consisted of or how they interacted with the building form. In our research of the mechanical systems, we learned how the CSU center utilizes a central plant, a central air shaft that runs through all 4 floors, and AHU’s that distribute air from there. The system recycles air through plenum spaces above the ceiling to reduce the buildings energy impact, cooling or heating the recycled air as needed. We learned about supply and return ducting and the space needed between floor and ceiling for these distributors. As we continued on with our research, it became apparent that daylighting was not a driving design factor. When studying the sDA and ASE, both of these percentages were well out of range of ideal values, with ASE well above 40% and sDA at 60%. We figure these values are the result of a lack of attention to each facade and their direction and instead a simple pattern placed on all facades. We would suggest designing each facade’s glazing appropriate for the direction it is facing and to also consider reducing heating in the buildings EUI by lowering the percentage of glazing on the northern facade to trap more internal heat. These suggestions will help better respond to the cold winter climate where the project is located. While the glazing was unsuccessfully simple and repetitive, the overall practical building form was ideal for programmatic aspects. The stacked floor plates allowed for mechanical systems like the air shaft to align. The exterior features prominent glass stair towers that are recognizable and ideal for exit discharge from the large building. The designers also left the unfinished fourth floor available for future development as necessary, which we have noticed in our satellite views of the building has been expanded on. Overall, the simple approach seems to work well for the programmatic functions, but leaves much to be desired in energy efficiency, spatial experience, and daylighting opportunities.

Fort Collins is located in a temperate climate, with hot summers and cold winters. Based on passive design strategies, the project should utilize thermal mass + night vent, capture internal heat gain, and use passive solar heating to increase the amount of hours in a year spent in the comfort zone to 57%. Using climate information, it is apparent the design team considered surface to volume ratios with the square form to ensure minimal heat was lost through the envelope.

Colorado State University Health and Medical Center SITE: Regional Resources 75% of Customers within the Fort Collins City limits are under the Utilities department of the Fort Collins Government. Water for the Fort Collins area is sourced from two locations: • The Colorado- Big Thompson project, which diverts water from the upper Colorado River and stores it in Lake Granby for later delivery to Carter Lake and Horsetooth Reservoir. This is managed by Northern Water. • The Cache la Poudre River basin, including the Michigan Ditch and Joe Wright Reservoir System. Wastewater is carried through underground pipes to one of the Water Reclamation Facilities in the area. A velocity of approximately two feet per second was accounted for when designing thew system to prevent the organics from settling in the system. Water treatment systems are in place to treat wastewater through chemical and biological processes and are done at the Drake Water Reclamation Facility and the Mulberry Water Reclamation Facility. Once the water has been treated, it is discharged to the Cache la Poudre River and Fossil Creek Reservoir. According to the Platte River Power Authority, the cities of Estes Park, Fort Collins, Longmont, and Loveland are delivered their power through the production of: • • • • •

coal (55%) hydropower (19%) wind (17%) purchases/other (5%) solar and natural gas (4%).

The baseling EUI for a project this size is around 270, with SDA goals ideally over 75%, but at least 55% and ASE below 10%. The energy analysis of the building shows equipment and heating as the top energy consumers of the building. Heating could be reduced through careful design. As for the daylighting analysis, the SDA is low in the center of the buidling, which is used for waiting spaces/lobbies and staff rooms. The ASE is high overall, but the centers of the buidling are low, which we concluded are individual rooms that need more regulation.

CENTRAL SHAFT CENTRAL SUPPLY MECHANICAL ROOM

The active systems for the Colorado State University Health Center are air handling units (AHU), located on the roof of the building. Some passive design strategies implemented were trapping internal heat gains through insulation, the use of brick masonry as a thermal insulator, and using internal gains from the mechanical rooms. There is a central plant located on the first floor of the building, housing mechanical systems and other building systems, ie. electrical, plumbing. This means that thermal comfort and ventilation are achieved through an air based system. There is a central air distribution tower located near the buildings elevators that distributes the air to each level, and horizontal ducts disperse from the main duct. These systems are concealed in the ceilings of the building, and work with the building form, as it is a pancake type form, with the floor layers being relatively deep to accommodate for the ducting and structural elements.

Thermal comfort in the Colorado State University Health and Medical Center is achieved through an air-based system. The building has 3 air handling units located on the roof that distribute air throughout the building via medium pressure ductwork to each floor and then through variable air volume boxes with reheat coils. The ducting is also wrapped in insulation to prevent energy loss. Return air will be done through air plenums in between the floors with low velocity ductwork to connect the plenum and the AHU’s. The building will be kept at 72o for heating periods and 75o for cooling periods. The building temperatures are regulated via the Building Automation System, as well as monitoring energy use to give building operators specifics on what parts of the building are using the most energy. These building systems are concealed within the floor plates and works well with the overall building form.

Colorado State University Health and Medical Center CIRCULATION: Structure, Mechanical Systems, & Circulation The egress system, as diagrammed to the right, is primarily on the outsides of the floor plans and works as both egress and experiential stairs for the project. The structural patterning of the columns for the concrete slabs allow for the stair towers to be glass curtain walls with exterior views. The mechanical systems, such as the air shaft and mechanical rooms, are paired with vertical circulation elements (elevators) on the interior of the plan and leave the opportunity to continuously wrap glazing around the building, including the stair towers. The design team considered the many layers of this project to ensure that the structural patterning, mechanical space planning, and egress elements could enhance the user’s experience of the building.

Colorado State University Health and Medical Center 14_STRUCTURE: Digital Model The health and medical center utilizes a steel framing system. The floor system is compromised of a corrugated steel deck with cast in place concrete poured on top. Lateral elements include shear walls with stone facades. These systems are supported by an on site case concrete foundation. This selection was choosen by the geoengineers for its cost efficiency and connection to the steel frames at the base. A slab on grade was also choosen by the Geotechnical engineer. The structural system choose to follow the regulations of the International Building Code (IBC).

The mass glass 3d model demonstrates an almost equal relationship between the two. Each facade follows the same pattern of mass and glass layout, regardless of solar orientation. We can tell prior to energy analysis that there will be daylighting issues in the center of the building because of its depth. While the lack of daylighting towards the center will increase energy usage, the users of the hospital are not reliant upon daylighting to complete a task or action. The envelope is composed of curtain walls, stone extrusions, brick, and a grey metal panelized system. These materials were chosen to help relate the buildings materiality to existing buildings on the campus while providing a modern flare. The brick masonry helps act as a thermal insulator for the building.
