January, 2023 Message to CPC Members

To all the CPC Members,

We hope that this message finds you healthy, happy, and ready to roll in the New Year. Every New Year is always an opportunity to reflect and right now I am contemplating what this message may have contained 75 years ago. It’s hard to imagine how our downtown has changed, grown, and how this building has seen (and supported) unimaginable change around it. I live in a historical home and I’m proud of the stories that it could tell, and feel the same way about our club walls. Some of our prominent staff have been at the CPC for half, or more than half of its history. If you have a free moment, go ask Carole or Toni about some of the great parties of our past this year. Enough about history, what is in store for our 75th year?

You will see 2023 increase and modernize programming. You will see a complete Pioneer Room telling and ready to educate the next generation with the stories of some of Calgary’s Founding Families. You will see some changes in the upstairs dining room to enhance our work from the Club facilities. You may also look forward to a pop-up Prosecco Bar, a mentorship program, and Chef Joanna adding her desired programming such as a Mexican cooking class. We have created a Young Professional’s committee, lead by our YP Board Member Raman Sawhney, as well as created a committee to ensure inclusive programming to support our broad membership. If you have ideas, please send them to staff or myself at: President@calpeteclub.com.

We want to thank the members for their loyalty. In club retention during the pandemic, CPC lead the way and I truly believe this is because of the heart and drive of Management and also because of the caliber and loyalty of our membership base. We collectively could see past a pandemic and toward the future. It’s in our blood as Calgarians to roll with the challenges and look forward to better days. I can feel the energy as we roll into 2023 and by all outlooks, it looks like Calgary is going to be in fine form. The CPC team and Board of Governors would like to wish you a year of great opportunity, great events, and we hope that 2023 is fruitful for you and your family.

Congrats to the CPC for 75 years in business. And, a Happy New Year to you and your family!

Letter from the President

Congratulations to CPC General Manager, Toni-Marie Ion-Brown, on her recent appointment as the Chancelier du Canada, of the Chaine des Roitisseurs,

Toni-Marie Ion-Brown, Bailli Honoraire of the Bailliage de l’Alberta à Calgary, has been promoted to Chancelier du Canada. Toni-Marie joined the Chaîne in 2011, and joined Calgary Council as Vice-Conseiller Gastronomique from 2013-2017. Toni-Marie was promoted to Vice- Chancellier in 2017 and in 2019 became the Bailli R is excited to take on the role as for National Council. Her prime in this role will be membership

including new member (with a focus on young member growth), and member retention. She feels her over 30 years in the member-based, private club business has build a very strong foundation to this new role.

Born and raised in Duchess Alberta, Toni-Marie grew up on a small acreage, and enjoyed participation in 4H Beef Canada, and grew up gardening and appreciating the “farm to table’ philosophy to food. She and her husband Bruce have enjoyed their quiet acreage lifestyle for nearly 20 years. Toni-Marie loves to tend to her large vegetable garden, is a flower lover and spends most weekends during the summer months at a nearby lake resort.

Toni-Marie’s career in hospitality began in 1990 when she joined the Calgary Petroleum Club as a server. She quickly became a supervisor and in 1999 was promoted to Food and Beverage Manager, responsible for a team of over 60. Toni-Marie became Assistant GM at the club in 2015, and in 2017 was promoted to General Manager.

Toni-Marie brings a very personal connection to the everyday operations of this vibrant city club. Toni-Marie is passionate about service, food, wine and spirit and serving the membership of her organizations she serves.

We congratulate Toni on this exceptional promotion and thank her for her dedicated service to the Club and its members.

Travel Trends 2023

Travel is back! Virtuoso, the leading global travel agency specializing in luxury and experiential travel, has shared its stats. Travel booked for 2023 is already pacing 47% higher than in 2019—a pinnacle year for travel. People are turning their dreams into experiences!

Current market reports indicate that travel is growing amongst groups. For example, family & multi-generational travel is increasingly popular, as people look to get away to celebrate marriages, milestone birthdays, anniversaries, and reunions. The industry is also seeing increased interest amongst men, ladies, and couples in group travel that focuses on immersive culinary experiences, wine, adventure, wellness, cycle tours and golf. At the same time, we are seeing more individuals unafraid to venture off on their own, to join cruises and tours. It’s clear that people enjoy travelling together!

What’s on people’s lists for premium and deluxe travel for 2023?

Europe continues to be hot. In particular, we are seeing a lot of travellers visit Portugal and Croatia. Iceland is also popular,

especially amongst those who love nature. Coming this spring, the Reykjavik Edition will open Iceland’s first roof top bar, where you can sip a cocktail while you admire the Northern lights. Artic adventures are trending as well, as many luxury cruise lines add unique expeditions to their itineraries, including visits to Greenland. For those looking for more exotic trips, Jordan, and the Middle East more broadly, have increased in popularity amongst travellers for 2023. African Safaris also continue to top people’s bucket lists.

River cruising has a lot of people talkingand for good reason! Often described as a floating boutique hotel, river cruises visit number of incredible destinations and seek to provide an immersive and authentic experience. You will never feel crowded on these ships, with only an average of 150 guests onboard. Itineraries sail through Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Amazon, so many spectacular destinations to choose from. This style of travel is attracting people of all ages and river cruise companies are responding by designing itineraries to meet a wide array of interests. Traditional walking tours, bikes and e-bikes, hikes, cafes, museums, castles, cooking classes,

wineries and breweries are but a few activities you can enjoy. Each day you’ll explore somewhere new, experiencing history, culture, food and new landscapes, without ever having to unpack your bags.

For those travellers looking to escape the crowds of popular destinations, the French Polynesian Islands are an unspoiled paradise. People are often surprised to hear that French Polynesia sees the same number of tourists in one year that Hawaii sees in just one week. Direct flights from Los Angles and San Francisco make it east to visit Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Moorea. Accommodation options include boutique hotels, overwater bungalows, jungle retreats, and small luxury cruises with beautiful suites and balconies to take in the mountains and crystal-clear water.

Calgary has seen an increase in direct flights to international destinations, making travel more accessible to Europe and Asia. This spring, YYC will have access to direct flights to Tokyo. Who wouldn’t want to fly to Japan for cherry blossom season?

Luxury brands connected to Virtuoso continue to focus on sustainability, with the goal of reducing the negative impact of travel while increasing the benefits. Respecting the environment, protecting animal welfare, and supporting local communities are no longer an option, but an expectation.

As travel demand continues to increase, it is essential to book in advance, allowing you to secure your top choices for accommodation, cruise or tour at the best price!
