PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Welcome to fall – I hope you enjoyed summer and made time for family, friends and relaxing! It was busier than usual for the club this summer, and the fall is shaping up to be on track for a record-breaking volume of events. Remember to pick up the new Fall/Winter Entertainment Guide and the Fall edition of the club magazine - Club Connections, as both are now available in the clubs’ lobby. You can also access both of these resources on the club website, under the News & Member to Member tab on the top menu bar.
One of the most exciting events this fall is the celebration of the Club’s 75th Anniversary at this years Presidents Party on Saturday, November 4th . This will be the biggest party of the year, and your all-inclusive ticket includes a welcome cocktail reception, four-course plated dinner, gourmet dessert buffet, live music with lots of dancing and fun all night long! You will also take home a special anniversary keepsake as a memento of this special year. Dress in your favourite formal wear, invite your friends and come ready to celebrate!
If you have dined in the Renfrew Lounge lately, you may have noticed the new signage as you enter the Pioneer Room. We are working towards the completion of this special club space and will be unveiling the completed Pioneer Room Book this fall. The book will give you more insight into the individuals featured on the walls of our Pioneer Room and their impact on not only Calgary and the province, but also the country. We have so many incredible club members with an interesting history to share; I encourage you to take some time reading through their stories.
I also encourage you to save the date for the clubs annual Children’s Christmas Party on Sunday, December 3rd. This event is for ‘kids of all ages’ and is a club tradition that we have continued for 75 years. Gather your family and lets’ celebrate the season and conclusion of our 75th anniversary year.
Thank you for your continued support of club events, along with your own private functions. You are what makes this club vibrant and successful and we are honoured to serve you.

COCKTAIL HOUR
ALBERTA’S NEW HOUSE OLD FASHIONED FEATURING MAKER’S MARK BOURBON
Behold the house bourbon of CPC - Maker’s Mark, because it’s as storied as we are. This bourbon speaks of timeless passion and precision.
The story of Maker’s Mark is a testament to love and legacy. In 1953, Bill and Margie, a dynamic husbandwife duo, ventured to craft a bourbon that resonated with their personal taste. Distilled from the soft red winter wheat instead of the more traditional rye, this bourbon boasts a unique, smooth, and balanced flavor. Margie’s creativity didn’t stop at the bourbon; she also envisioned a bottle that would be as unique as its contents.
Every bottle, with its distinct acoustics while pouring and hand-dipped signature red wax seal, is a homage to their relentless dedication. Three generations on, the legacy remains unchanged - every bottle of Maker’s Mark is as distinctive as the individual relishing its rich notes. Furthermore, as a certified B-Corp business, Maker’s Mark stands as a beacon for sustainability and fostering a culturally rich milieu.
ALSO TRY THE GOLD RUSH COCKTAIL: A SIP OF SUNSHINE
Dive into a golden experience with The Gold Rush Cocktail. Featuring the esteemed Maker’s Mark bourbon, this concoction is elevated with honey syrup, harvested right from our CPC rooftop hives. A squeeze of fresh lemon completes this drink, offering a burst of zest that dances perfectly with the sweet undertones of the honey. It’s more than a cocktail – it’s a symphony of flavours that mirrors the beauty of a golden sunset.

Understanding Gender Intelligence: A Pathway to Business Success
In the world of business, one often finds tried and tested strategies and methods that are hailed as the ultimate pathways to success. However, a fresh perspective emerges every so often, shedding light on overlooked facets of effective business management. One such perspective is “gender intelligence.”
Local entrepreneur and coach Oksana Irwin recently explained this concept during an enlightening interview, emphasizing its crucial role in understanding business dynamics and human interactions.
Oksana Irwin, a trailblazing figure in the Calgary business landscape, combines her extensive research and personal experiences to offer unique insights into gender intelligence. With a background that spans entrepreneurship, coaching, and writing, she harnesses her profound understanding of human dynamics to promote effective communication and collaboration. A true thought leader, Oksana’s approach is a testament to her commitment to breaking barriers
and fostering understanding in personal and professional arenas.
What is Gender Intelligence? At its core, gender intelligence delves into recognizing and appreciating the innate differences between men and women. It’s not just about acknowledging that men and women often approach situations differently; it’s about understanding why they do so and leveraging this knowledge for more effective communication, leadership, and sales.
Oksana illustrates this by saying, “A man goes to the mall, he tries one store. A woman goes around for three hours, goes to every store, buys nothing and leaves happy. Both are happy and feeling
BACK TO BUSINESS 16 Club Connections / Fall 2023 CALGARY PETROLEUM CLUB
accomplished and successful.” Such observations may seem humorous, but they offer profound insights into the divergent ways the two genders perceive and react to the same situation.
Gender Intelligence in Business
While gender differences have long been recognized in personal relationships, the application of these insights in business has often been glossed over. Oksana emphasizes the missed opportunities, saying, “Yet it never brought into the business ideas. Like, oh, why, I wonder, why is it? Who’s wrong? Who’s right, by the way? Right. We’re always kind of trying to figure out who’s wrong, who is right.”
The truth is, no one is “right” or “wrong.” By understanding and harnessing gender intelligence, businesses can tap into a new realm of potential. For instance, while men might prefer direct and clear-cut strategies in sales and marketing, women may value relational and holistic approaches. Recognizing these distinctions can help formulate more effective strategies tailored to diverse audiences.
From Personal to Professional Realizations
For Oksana, the journey of understanding gender intelligence began personally. She mentions, “When I realized, I understood myself, my partner’s needs or the opposite sex.” However, as she delved deeper into the subject, the applications extended beyond personal relationships.
Oksana elaborates, “And so when I didn’t understand, many things didn’t work. I was so stressed, I was burned out all the time.” But by embracing gender intelligence, she cultivated more harmonious personal relationships and
applied the insights into the broader realms of business, leadership, and sales.
Reaping the Benefits
Companies and entrepreneurs stand to gain immensely by integrating gender intelligence into their operations. Irwin succinctly says, “If you work against the universal laws, everything will be difficult. It’s going to be resistance. And same with gender intelligence.” By aligning with these inherent differences, businesses can foster enhanced communication, reduce misunderstandings, and bolster team cohesion.
Moreover, adopting gender intelligence can produce substantial benefits like reduced stress, improved emotional intelligence, and more effective business strategies. Oksana underscores the value of working in harmony with these universal principles, saying it’s akin to “getting more into the flow of life instead of creating all this resistance and fighting things.”
A Practical Takeaway
For businesses eager to embark on this journey, Oksana offers three foundational pieces of advice:
1. Know Your Numbers: Business owners must understand their financials and business metrics, not just fundamental indicators like customer numbers or revenue.
2. Track Your Data: Regularly review and update your business data to ensure your strategies are based on accurate and current information.
3. Review Your Leads: Assess your lead generation strategies and conversion rates, ensuring your marketing strategies align with your audience.
A Deeper Dive
Those keen on delving deeper into this subject will find valuable insights in Oksana Irwin’s book, “Love and Coach,” co-authored with Dr. Joe Gray. The book weaves personal experiences and client stories to reveal the transformative power of gender intelligence in various spheres of life.
In essence, the journey to understanding gender intelligence is not just a business strategy; it’s a holistic approach to life. As Oksana Irwin aptly suggests, it’s about “enjoying real life rather than struggling through and getting somewhere and constantly fighting something.” This perspective promises a pathway to greater success and fulfillment for businesses and individuals alike.

Welcome Chef Christian Konrad
Can you Cook?
To me, that is a question like: Can you breathe? Since humans possess fire and salt, we understand the fact that a caught wild boar or a fish that found its way into our net, taste better combining it with these 2 basic elements. We have figured out that we can create textures and flavours. Food is not just a source of energy, we can and should enjoy it!
Since that moment, cooking belongs to the core of life, it is what differentiate humans from animals.
I grew up in Toronto, my parents were immigrants from a mountain town in Austria. My dad was a baker with a Master’s diploma, my mother was a waitress later on, restaurant manager. It was going to be hard not to do something involving food and beverage.
In 1987 I started my apprenticeship in a ski resort Tirol, Austria. It was hard, and it was tough but you learn at a very young age what it is going to take in this industry. More than that it made me want to travel. Hungry, not just for food but to discover cultures, meeting people and seeing things.
Cooking is not about knowing how to prepare a particular dish or to reproduce a complicated recipe. As professionals, we all need to move our orientation away from a specific combination of ingredients to reach a prescribed, predetermined finished dish. It is even more important to dive behind these “formulas” so that we can grasp the basics of cooking.
As culinary students, we must all continue to gain confidence through experience, so we can answer the questions of: “How much?” “How long?” “And when?”. When we learn, the benchmarks of quality are found and we begin to answer those questions. Cooking at a high level is exciting.
Our profession is wonderful, we need to inspire our up-and-coming cooks. We need to showcase the incredible possibilities of choosing to be a chef. Is it hard? Sure, it is…
People need to be clear that if you want to do something, anything, at a high level it is not going to be easy.
Do you work Saturdays? Yes.
But you can work Saturdays in The Bahamas. Drawing from a vast palate of international experience from Innsbruck to Rio and across the Caribbean. This career has taken me to amazing places, I have learned 5 languages. I met my wife Renata working at a beach resort in Brazil, my daughter Liv was born in Panama City, while I was working for Sheraton. I am very grateful.
In addition, my relationships with the people have been unforgettable. I have been fortunate to work with the most amazing people along the way. We are always finding new ways to do things, raising the bar. I want to incorporate fresh local ingredients whenever possible. Creativity is key and quality must always be the focus.
My belief is that there is something very special and intimate in preparing meals for a stranger, food brings people together. I am very excited to be part of this team and am looking forward to creating and sharing many amazing experiences with the membership of the Calgary Petroleum Club.

Calgary: Stepping Into the Limelight as Canada’s Genomic Capital
Traditionally associated with breathtaking natural beauty, Calgary has always been a beacon for those seeking a harmonious blend of urban life and the serenity of nature. Now, there’s another feather in its cap. The city is emerging as a hotbed of medical innovation, thanks in no small part to Dr. Kapoor and his game-changing enterprise, BioAro.
Dr. Kapoor’s narrative is as diverse as it is impressive. Having commenced his medical journey in India, furthered his studies in Russia, and braved the icy climes of Siberia, this global citizen found his true calling in the heart of Canada. Studying in eminent institutions like the University of Lethbridge and the University of Alberta paved the way, but Calgary’s charm truly captivated him.
Describing the city’s allure, he says, “Calgary is the most beautiful city. It’s the most livable city, year after year.”
Dr. Kapoor’s dedication to cardiology and healthcare innovation is evident in his extensive achievements. A Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, he specializes in Internal Medicine with a subspecialty focus in
Cardiology. In 2011, his vision led to the foundation of Advanced Cardiology in Calgary, which he subsequently expanded to various locations across Alberta. Besides his medical prowess, Dr. Kapoor has showcased his entrepreneurial genius with ventures such as CardiAI, a revolutionary biotechnology firm aiming to transform cardiac testing.
With CardiAI’s recent introduction of a Health Canada-approved Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring device, Dr. Kapoor is leaping into cardiac health technology. Not limiting his pursuits to medicine, he has also garnered recognition for his philanthropic endeavours. His efforts to raise over $1 million for the Guru Nanak Dev Ji Heart Health Research Chair at the University of Calgary testify to this. Furthermore, his commitment

to women’s health and empowerment shines through his involvement in Bollywood productions that emphasize menstrual hygiene and challenge body shaming.
BioAro, a brainchild borne from Dr. Kapoor’s expertise as a leading cardiologist and his entrepreneurial spirit, aims to redefine healthcare. This isn’t just about introducing new technology; it’s about a paradigm shift in understanding and treating illnesses. Instead of a generic, broad-brush approach to medicine, BioAro emphasizes genomic sequencing. Dr. Kapoor passionately explains, “Imagine a world where treatments and diagnostic plans are tailor-made just for you.”
“Our ancestors often left us with tales and vague health histories. Now, imagine diving deep, accessing that history, and understanding it. That’s the power of genomics,” he says.
This precision-based model, championed by BioAro, promises to alleviate many of the side effects of traditional treatments, ensuring healthcare is effective and personalized.
By focusing on genomic sequencing, Dr. Kapoor envisions a future where the uncertainties of medicine—like side effects or ineffective treatments—are things of the past. “Generation Alpha will never know...that risk factor 30% risk factor because we’re going to have technological solutions,” he added.
This unique selling point of BioAro allows individuals to understand their genetic makeup in detail, paving the way for genuinely personalized healthcare solutions. Moreover, its predictive treatments can test the efficacy of
medications on cells outside the body, ensuring patients receive only the most effective treatments.
The ambitious expansion plans of BioAro are set to be realized in a new downtown office strategically located across the esteemed Calgary Petroleum Club.
This state-of-the-art facility is not just an expansion in physical terms but a leap in the services offered. The offerings are vast and varied, from hosting Calgary’s maiden AI-powered pet CT scan and MRI facility—which promises to drastically reduce waiting times—to introducing innovative cell culture therapies.
Dr. Kapoor’s vision positions Calgary on the global map of medical innovation. He proudly proclaims, “Because of BioAro in Calgary, no city in Canada has such genomic depth.”
The comparison of Calgary with Houston, renowned for its expansive healthcare centers, is symbolic and a testament to the city’s growing prowess in healthcare innovation. With over 50 patents already under its belt, BioAro’s contributions to this reputation are undeniable.
It’s clear that Dr. Kapoor’s enthusiasm for Calgary’s potential in the medical tech arena is not just mere optimism but based on tangible advancements. His initiatives are turning Calgary into a nexus of biotech, AI, and advanced healthcare solutions.
As Calgary stands on the cusp of a healthcare revolution, its residents can look forward to a future illuminated by pioneers like Dr. Kapoor, who are driving this change with vision, expertise, and relentless determination.
You can catch Dr. Kapoor’s full interview on Calgary Petroleum Club’s Back to Business podcast or join us on October 19 for the Wellness Lunch, featuring Dr. Kapoor’s talk on longevity.
Dr. Anmol Kapoor, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, specializes in Cardiology. Founder of Advanced Cardiology and CEO of CardiAI, he launched a Health Canadaapproved 24-hour blood pressure monitor (www.BParo.com).
Honored with the Hind Rattan and Calgary Immigrants of Distinction Awards, he’s raised over $1M for heart research at University of Calgary and champions women’s health via Bollywood films.

The Alberta Advantage: A Deep Dive into the Evolution of the Energy Sector with Josef Schrater
Alberta is known for its pristine landscapes, cowboy culture, and, more prominently, its dynamic energy sector. At the core of Alberta’s success lies a spirit of innovation, openness, and resilience. No one encapsulates this spirit more fittingly than Joseph Schachter, an expert who has closely observed and participated in the evolution of the energy sector in Alberta.
Some individuals stand out not just for their depth of experience but for their vision. Josef Schachter, a luminary in investment management, is one such individual. With over four decades of expertise, predominantly rooted in the energy domain, Schachter has witnessed the sector’s many metamorphoses. Originating from Winnipeg and establishing a commendable career in Alberta, he has dedicated a significant portion of his life to the intricacies of the energy market.
After 40 years of shaping and navigating the intricate maze of global politics, economic trends, and energy data, 2017 marked a significant transition for Josef. It was the year he founded the Schachter Energy Report, aiming to bridge the information gap for individual investors amidst the continual shifts in the energy arena. But why is this mission so important for him? At its core,
it’s about “demystifying complex energy scenarios for the public,” Schachter shares.
Building on this foundation of demystifying the energy landscape, Josef also became instrumental in fostering a platform for active discourse and collaboration within the sector.
A Date with Energy’s Future: The 2023 Catch the Energy Conference
Scheduled for October 14 at Mount Royal University’s Bella Concert Hall & Ross Glen Hall, the conference is more than just an event — it’s an immersion into the future of energy. Starting at 7:30 a.m. with breakfast registration, it wraps up by 4:00 p.m.. Attendees will experience booth displays from 45 firms, representing a spectrum of energy companies. Josef emphasizes, “It’s a space where the walls between corporate narratives and curious investors come down.”
BACK TO BUSINESS 28 Club Connections / Fall 2023 CALGARY PETROLEUM CLUB
Schachter’s Global Perspective
Back to Schachter’s insights, it’s evident that his holistic approach to the sector’s analysis is grounded in a comprehensive understanding of global happenings. “You cannot simply view energy in isolation. Global politics, technological shifts, environmental concerns — all these play critical roles,” Schachter emphasized.
Between the lines of Alberta’s energy narrative is a story that resonates with decades of evolution. Once heavily reliant on traditional energy sources, the province has seen significant changes over the years.
“The energy sector of the 1970s is not the same as today. The world and demands were different, and Alberta had to adapt,” Schachter
recalls. He emphasized the global oil crisis and how Alberta played its cards during those tumultuous times, positioning itself as a leader in energy innovations.
Josef’s perspective provides an unparalleled lens into Alberta’s energy realm. “What we say to people when they’re new, take the quarterly, see if you like it, then the annual is cheaper, and then they can switch over,” Schachter advises, pointing to the region’s pragmatic approach to welcoming new stakeholders into the energy fold.
In an era marked by polarized narratives, Schachter’s team
embraces balance and holistic understanding. He elaborates, “We have something called balance of evidence. We put in the positives and negatives. It’s not just a positive marketing story about a company without acknowledging potential issues. Every company could have challenges.” This philosophy is crucial, particularly for new investors seeking a clear picture in a complex domain.
Alberta’s energy sector, while robust, has navigated its share of turbulence — from fervent environmental debates to economic challenges magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Schachter reflects on the transitional phase, remarking, “After what happened with the banks during COVID pulling the lines of credits, several commendable companies went under, solely due to unresolved debt.” Such instances underscore the industry’s vulnerabilities, emphasizing the criticality of diversification and financial tenacity.
However, when asked about Alberta’s unique position in the global energy sector, Schachter highlights the province’s spirit of inclusivity and adaptability.
“I think the key is that the people are open to new ideas. They’re welcoming to newcomers, always eager to integrate diverse perspectives,” he shares. This openness, paired with Alberta’s abundant resources, crafts an unparalleled platform for growth and innovation.
Alberta’s Community Spirit and Future
Josef’s passion for Alberta’s potential is palpable, not just in the context of its resources but its vibrant community spirit. “Calgary is a testament to this spirit. Just take

the Stampede, for instance. It’s not just about the records it breaks, but how it brings people together, fostering camaraderie and offering tremendous networking avenues,” Schachter observes.
Looking forward, Schachter is optimistic about the untapped potential in Alberta’s energy sector. He speaks of the province’s capability to merge tradition with technology. “In the coming decade, we’ll see an even greater confluence of data analytics, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy integration in Alberta. There’s a promising horizon for young investors and innovators,” he predicts. Schachter’s optimism stems from the province’s resources and its people, known for their resilience, adaptability, and forwardthinking approach.
As Alberta strides forward, its energy sector remains a beacon of hope and growth. With industry experts like Josef Schachter
guiding the way with insights and balanced perspectives, Alberta’s energy sector promises a future filled with innovation, resilience, and prosperity.
The Alberta Advantage
In the words of Schachter, “If you have an idea, you will find someplace where somebody will listen. And if the idea has merit, there are places in town with private equity, private financing, family foundations, family offices who will invest in those ideas to get them off the ground.” This is the Alberta advantage: a blend of resource richness and a culture of openness and innovation.
You can listen to Josef Schachter’s full interview on Calgary Petroleum Club’s Back to Business podcast. As a CPC member, you can receive two complimentary tickets to the Schachter Catch the Energy Conference on October 14.
