A

t the recent AGM, the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce reflected on the achievements of the organisation over the last financial year. We plan to continue to represent the business community with a strong mandate from the increasing membership base and a responsibility to continue to work to make Caloundra an iconic gateway to the Sunshine Coast.

At the meeting attended by more than 70 Chamber members, reports were presented by myself, outgoing Tourism and Events Chair, Bill Darby and Treasurer, Glen Palmer.

The broad message was that the Chamber had an outstanding year of membership growth reaching a milestone of 521 members. The Chamber delivered over 30 events during the year for member’s professional growth and connections through networking. The Chamber has actively represented and advocated for its members in conversations and forums discussing local issues through to national issues impacting business, such as the expansion of the Sunshine Coast Airport, CCTV funding for the CBD and playing an active role in supporting the CBD Revitalisation Project.

It has led from the front in terms of its vision to establish Caloundra as the most dynamic, welcoming and connected business community in regional Queensland.

The Chamber recently hosted a number of functions and events which presented a great opportunity to mix and mingle and included the Smart Lunch Club in August presented by Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson and CEO Michael Whittaker, the Business After Hours at the Best Western Plus Lake Kawana Hotel as well as our AGM .

The Caloundra Chamber of Commerce is the driving force behind a number of economic and business activators in the area including the Caloundra Street Fair, Caloundra Twilight Markets, business and networking events and publishers of Caloundra Buzz magazine. During the last 12 months it has represented Caloundra Tourism as a division of the Chamber and initiated a number of marketing opportunities to elevate Caloundra on the tourism platform. Additionally, financial and in kind support has been provided to a number of tourism and community events to enhance the image and attraction of Caloundra.

Leanne Layfield, Executive Officer, presented an overview of some of our major projects we have worked on this past year including Queensland Small Business Week, the Caloundra Warm Up Sessions and funding for CCTV in the CBD and surrounds.

A hotly contested election was held for the 2 general committee member positions with Ken Jeffreys and Donna Niazov being appointed on to the committee. We welcome our new committee members and thanks to outgoing committee members Bill Darby and Gary Mears for their outstanding contribution to the Caloundra Chamber over the past few years. Tania Turner opened her first salon as a sole trader at the age of 25 before establishing Shine Beauty with husband Joel in 1999. The family-owned business opened its Caloundra salon in June 2013.

M

rs Turner has well and truly made her mark on the industry with salons on the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Caloundra, Sippy Downs and Maroochydore, employing 42 people and taking more than $32 million in total sales. Shine Beauty has won the Sunshine Coast Business Excellence Award in 2007, 2008, 2011 and was inducted into the hall of fame in 2012.

This year, Mrs Turner was announced as the Sunshine Coast Outstanding Business Woman of the Year.

When did you know that opening a beauty salon was what you wanted to do?

I was 23 when I decided to pursue beauty therapy and achieved my Associate Diploma qualification, hoping it would lead me into small business.

I was passionate and driven my first year out of college, and within 12 months, my reputation for hard work and professionalism paid off.

Opportunities presented themselves and I elected to open my own beauty room within a luxury hair salon, as sole operator. A short time later we expanded to our first Shine Beauty salon, right next door.

What is the biggest business lesson you have learned along the way?

To employ and retain great people. You must have staff who have a shared passion for providing excellent customer service. Our business success is dependent on having settled, happy, well trained staff who truly believe in our core values. You also need outstanding efficient business systems.

These are the foundations upon which everything is built in our business.

What has been the biggest challenge for you either personally or professionally and how did you overcome it?

It's juggling, finding the balance, always striving to be the successful businesswoman, the amazing mum and loving wife. This is surely the same for all businesswomen. It is a challenge each year and one which I work hard to balance.

What do you find the most rewarding about your job?

I love working in the beauty industry. It makes for a beautiful and rewarding working life. We really can make a difference by promoting change, health, appearance and self-esteem.

How has the Caloundra salon performed?

Shine Caloundra was a new business model for us as it was our first street site. We had salons located in prominent shopping centres, Westfield Chermside, Myer Centre Brisbane, Australia Fair Gold Coast and of course Sunshine Plaza, so it was a new step for Shine. I was so excited to be opening in my own town.

Caloundra salon has become the successful salon it is today, due to extensive community involvement, great services every time bringing positive word of mouth advertising, backed up with our professional brand.

What do you think it is about Shine that has attracted so much attention and accolades on the Sunshine Coast over the years?

For my husband Joel and I, there are five elements that drive our success: Having great people, quality of service, efficient systems, a trusted brand and the management of financial planning. I think that when it comes to judging us and when experts inspect Shine, I believe they find our branding, systems and financial management to be excellent.

Many years ago we began building our own web-based Smart Support Management System. It guides us on everything we do, and our online booking engine is also a unique feature. Our research has found no other beauty salon which has their own stand alone in house inventory management system, can sell and promote treatments online and also manage different salon rates, time of day rates, treatment rates and multiple live online web bookings.

How does it feel to be the Outstanding Business Woman of the Year?

Surreal is the first word I think of, and I am extremely proud. I find myself reflecting back, over the past 17 years. Remembering special moments, like the day we chose Shine as our business name from 50 other alternatives. And the days we enthusiastically signed the lease for the next new salon, initially always in a new city but we were up for the challenge.

In the final days before opening my Caloundra store, my father was painting, my son Max handling all maintenance, my daughter Jade filling the shelves with products, myself interviewing staff and Joel finalising the last of the construction. Winning this award would not have been possible without the support of my family.

My goal is to do this in a positive and honest way so that other women may find inspiration to pursue their own dreams of starting their first business, or expanding to their next.

Now that the spotlight is shining on you, do you have any goals you wish to achieve in the next 12 months?

Seventeen years ago, I started a business from scratch, in an incredibly competitive industry, with no guidelines or experience. Since winning this award I have been asked many times to share my journey. My goal is to do this in a positive and honest way so that other women may find inspiration to pursue their own dreams of starting their first business, or expanding to their next.

What advice can you give to young business women in your industry?

Create stability and security for your staff, consistency of experience for your clients and always lead by example.

BOOST PRODUCTIVITY Ken Sutherland, Inbox Workspace Co-Founder.

The revolution of co-working is taking the world by storm with spaces growing from just 75 globally in 2007 to more than 7800 spaces last year. According to Jones Lang LaSalle’s paper, A New Era of Coworking, liquid or flexible spaces are fast becoming critical components of wider Corporate Real Estate (CRE) and portfolio strategies.

A

n online survey conducted by Boardroom Business in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Council two years ago discovered almost half of the sole traders working from home found it difficult to separate home life from work life.

More than a third of respondents listed isolation as one of their biggest challenges and 30% said distractions at home were a problem. The emergence of shared workspaces on the Coast has offered a cost-effective means for sole traders and small businesses to knock those issues on the head with minimal headaches.

Chamber members Inbox Workspace, opened in Maroochydore in April and business partners Ken Sutherland and Bobby Tsung were inspired by a belief that office space should effectively reduce overheads for sole traders who had been restricted to working from home in the past.

“There is a growing need for this style of work space on the Coast as more and more people are starting up here. A lot of them don’t want to rent an office and take up a five year lease, put in printers and all that infrastructure when they could rent a space here and everything's already in place,” Mr Sutherland said.

“This is a huge industry in Europe as businesses move towards having no fixed address so they can move from place to place and they can come and go as they like.”

Where people had been working at home, they can’t believe how productive they are when they are at Inbox...

Mr Sutherland said they had designed a facility that was “more like a business class lounge at the airport” with a professional set up of 40 workstations, six office pods and three boardrooms which could be utilised as training, seminar or workshop rooms.

Inbox has attracted permanent tenants from businesses in a range of industries including property and IT and the boardroom meeting space has been popular with both local and interstate businesses.

Mr Sutherland said although the potential for functional and serviced office space, free parking, free coffee and fast internet were great draw cards for small businesses looking to move out of their homes, there was another benefit he had not foreseen.

“The biggest comment I get is the boost to productivity. Where people had been working at home, they can’t believe how productive they are when they are at Inbox as they get through as much as three times more work as what they did at home, which is something they did not realise before and is a big surprise to them,” he said.

According to the JLL paper, there are four core models of co-working, including internal collaboration, co-working memberships, external co-working space and internal co-working space.

The latter, where companies open internal co-working space to entrepreneurs and start-ups, is on offer by the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber has desks available for short term stays by members who wish to work in their environment.

CO WORKING SPACE Further up Bulcock St, the Sunshine Coast Business Centre also has shared work spaces and serviced offices, but has more of a focus on virtual office services.

Ms Hamilton said there was huge demand for local services as opposed to internationally-run virtual answer companies, because Coast residents had a holistic knowledge of the region.

Owner Jen Hamilton said there were many small businesses that weren’t large enough to afford their own receptionist staff, so this was a way they could have a professional answer their calls with their business name and forward on relevant messages. Ms Hamilton took over the centre in 2013 as she saw the potential for growth.

“I think people love working from home, but they’ve come back almost full circle to wanting to be with other people as well. Virtual office customers covered a diverse range of industries with different levels of service from simply answering calls in the business name and passing on messages to the gold package, where the SCBC gets to know the intimate details of the business and their clients and can quote jobs and take payments on the company’s behalf.

SHINE BRIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND Ally, Manager of Shine Auto Wash.

If you have ever stopped into the Shine Auto Wash on Caloundra Road, you would know Ally.

The bubbly car wash Manager has been the face of the business for the past five years and no matter how busy it gets, she always has a ready smile and time for a chat.

O

n an extremely busy weekday, Ally can provide driveway service for as many as 73 cars and that can escalate to more than 80 on a weekend. “I have regulars coming from Coolum, Maleny, Beerwah, Buderim and even Noosa because of the service here. Some customers can’t wash their own car and I clean off all the brake dust from their rims and make sure their windows are clean so when they leave the car wash, it’s as clean as it can be,” Ally said.

With strong environmentally conscious principles, Shine Auto Wash invested in a 10kw solar system that has cut their power bill by around 50%, which is no mean feat considering they also have manual cleaning stations, one of which is large enough to accommodate trucks and buses, and vacuum bays.

Far from just meeting the required standards in water treatment and disposal, Shine Auto Wash has gone above and beyond to ensure the quality of the water being released into the storm water drains is harmless. The water they use is sourced from a private bore and Shine Auto Wash has the only brushless Laser Wash

“Down the track, when the technology increases and the price drops, we’d like to get a battery system connected to the solar and to go completely off the grid.

When Phil Pfeifer met Kevin Scambler, they had no idea they were about to stumble upon a golden partnership. One was the national business manager of a German company with products for brushless carwashes and the other owned a car wash.

Phil has been marketing Nerta’s phosphate-free products in Australia for the past 18 months in the trucking and mining industries. Now, Shine Auto Wash is the only car wash using the superior products.

Phil said Nerta had been around since 1973, when they were designed specifically for Mercedes Benz.

Kevin said they encouraged people to consider going to the car wash as the environmentally friendly alternative to washing your car at home, where all of the chemicals you use go straight into the storm water drains and out to the ocean.

“At Shine Auto everything goes into the pits, which collects oils, grease, lubricants and sediment and the water is filtered a further three times and pumped via a separator before it goes into the storm water. The bore water used here is put through UV filters and sand filters before it’s used in the car wash, so it is actually better quality than town water. We use reverse osmosis on all of the water that is used in the last cycle of the Laser Wash so that all the excess water runs off without streaking so there are no additives in that at all," he said.

“They had a problem with their vehicles coming off the production line a little dusty and had to find a way to clean them. So they developed a touchless car wash, the first in the world, so they could spray it on," he said.

Used on European cars that drove on salted roads in the winter, Phil said Nerta was designed to inhibit corrosion and is perfect for harsh environments like coastal areas. Phil and Kevin have collaborated for the past year to find the perfect balance for the product which makes it even better for the environment.

THE SEEKERS Chris Michel owner of Sunseeker Caravans (formerly Freedom RV's) began with arguably the best brand on the market, Roadstar Caravans, and for the past two years have grown their own brand Sunseeker Caravans to the powerhouse it is today.

hris designs all his Sunseekers from the ground up with aluminium frames, full composite exteriors and a one-piece fiberglass roof.

I have worked for many different brands and many different people and all of my suggestions to previous employers on how things could be perfected weren’t being taken on board so this has been my chance to create floor plans with attention to detail and a sense of open space and comfort," Chris said.

“Customers are always quite nervous in taking ownership of their new van, but they are also very excited to get started with their adventures so they can set up just 100 metres across the road and if they get into any difficulty or are unsure about anything, they just give us a call and one of us hops onto the Segway and goes over the road to assist them,” Chris said.

The family-owned business on Bowman Road offers everything from new compact vans through to off-road live aboard vans, used vans, consignment vans and a service centre at their highly-visible sales yard.

Chris has formed strong partnerships with a number of local businesses, including the Big 4 Caloundra Waterfront Holiday Park.

With customers being drawn to Caloundra from the 15 state-wide trade shows Chris attends each year and others from around the

What it means is customers appreciate a salesperson with good product knowledge and is able to communicate and work with them.”

Exclusive international collection debuts from an award-winning Vienna designer and a highly-sought after German swimwear label will have the Glitterati waiting with bated breath as the Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival comes to town.

T

he event has become a national magnet for not only talented and well respected designers and industry figures, but for fashion enthusiasts keen to get a first glimpse of new collections.

Visitors to the ninth annual event on Saturday, October 22 will be in for a treat, with Vienna’s Thang de Hoo using the festival as the platform for the international debut of his ready-to-wear Rivivi6269 collection and for the fourth year running, German label Sunflair will showcase its new summer range at The Events Centre, Caloundra.

“We are consistently seeing an increase of people from outside of the Sunshine Coast as the years go on. We see people every year from Melbourne and Perth, with quite an influx from Brisbane and the Gold Coast last year. From a national perspective it is really growing.”

Although the event has been running since 2007, it wasn’t until five years into the event that international designers began to feature on the

catwalk and it didn’t take long for the spotlight to shine brighter on the Sunshine Coast.

“From an international industry perspective, we are considered one of the best eyes for early emerging talent and that’s one of the reasons fashion organisations are supporting us either visibly or behind the scenes. We are now the only established Queensland fashion event with international recognition.

Festival director Jacinta Richmond said the international juggernauts would be joined by a host of local and national designers, including festival favourite Nicola Finetti.

“What’s good about having Thang de Hoo launch Rivivi6269 with us is that a lot of big name buyers in Australia want a piece of Thang, so they are all coming to the Sunshine Coast to see his collection on the catwalk. This means all of our local and visiting labels are right in front of the creme de la creme of buyers and they wouldn’t have that opportunity otherwise,” she said.

Despite the festival star continuing to soar, Ms Richmond said it hasn’t always been a smooth ride.

“The biggest lesson I’ve learned, and the thing that allows it to grow, is to be grateful for negative feedback. Someone took the time out of their day to let us know about their experience. It allows us to take a look and make the necessary changes to improve the event.

As a result, we keep learning and growing.”

On October 22, a team of around 230 people (all volunteers) will transform The Events Centre into a fashion mecca for the day.

On top of a plethora of catwalk delights, the festival will also feature Trade Lounge (pop up shops of catwalk and fashion brands selling at wholesale), the Sunshine Coast Design Awards & Hall of Fame, the Sunshine Coast Style Awards and an Industry Q&A with a panel including Ragtrader Magazine Editor Assia Benmedjoub, Amy Boers of Amee Boers Fashion Agency, designers Nicola Finetti, Thang de Hoo, Kellie Alderman, Paul Hunt and SCFF Director & industry mentor Ms Richmond.

TRICK OR TREAT Taking a risk on something that was completely new for the Sunshine Coast could have gone either way for Aussie World. But there is no doubt that from the first time the giant spider took up temporary residence outside the iconic theme park, it has never been the same again.

T

he inaugural Halloween Festevil took the Coast by storm when it sold out in 2014 and it has become a highly anticipated annual tradition, with fans calling months in advance to find out when they can secure their tickets each year. Aussie World Marketing and Brand Manager Tim James said that introducing any new event came with an element of doubt, but they felt it would be a great opportunity, so seized the vampire by the fangs and took the plunge.

“We found that Halloween had been growing in popularity pretty dramatically on the Sunshine Coast and more and more families were looking for somewhere fun and safe to enjoy everything that is Halloween. It certainly paid off and we have already seen it grow, resulting in far greater investment in the event production.

We’ve evolved a huge amount since the first event, so guests will certainly be blown away by the quality of the 2016 event,” he said.

Farm Maze, which was a full replica of the house in the horror movie.

“This maze included a huge range of actual movie props and sets built in. Chris is a great talent and is enjoying some well-deserved success here and also in the USA, so it was great for us to have the opportunity to work with him on that project,” Mr James said.

With the popularity of the event expected to soar, the entertainment team began custombuilding sets and props for this year’s Festevil six months ago. Although he couldn’t give too much away, Mr James said there would be around 50 actors in this year’s event, with four mazes, live shows and roving entertainment.

While some of the staff only take a short amount of time to look positively ghoulish for the night, some feature characters can take up to three hours for full transformation make-up.

“Last year, our two major mazes were the most popular and I suspect that our new Mayhem Maze and VIP Panic Rooms will be the heroes this year. The Mayhem Maze in particular has been many months in the planning and will be a permanent attraction within the park. This is a really exciting project for us and our guests get to enjoy it all year round.”

FROCALS FOR LOCALS Working on the land in his first job gave Daniel Hull an appreciation for what it takes to produce food for the region. So when he tired of his next job as an engineer in a central Queensland underground coal mine, he started to dream of making the fresh produce that people flock to farmers markets for available throughout the week.

An online business course gave Daniel the foundation he needed to begin to build his business, which he named Frocals, because not only does the Kings Beach shopfront offer fresh produce and locally-made products, but they use these same items to make delicious coffees, smoothies and acai bowls in its coffee shop.

Daniel prides himself on the fact that everything served at the shop is fresh and the only artificial flavourings you’ll find are the flavour shots poured into coffees.

With consumers demanding fresher produce and becoming more aware of how their fruit and vegetables are grown, Daniel said he saw a market for locally grown, spray-free produce.

“People are sick of going to the big chain supermarkets and are becoming more conscious of supporting local farmers. People are shopping more and more and buying less and less and now more than ever, they are looking for an experience. So while they come in to buy food, they can sit down and have a chat and get some local produce and a drink or snack made from that produce and that makes us completely different from a supermarket,' Daniel said.

Frocals is inspired by outlets like the Get Fresh in Cotton Tree and the Bent Banana in Peregian Springs, which is a fruit and veg shop that also has a miniature coffee shop space.

Daniel said he hoped to make a distinct mark on the Kings Beach eatery scene with the addition of a short order menu and an expansion to the locally made groceries in the near future.

Frocals opened on May 1 after securing a tenancy under the Ultiqa Shearwater Resort, across from Kings Beach, which Surf Life Saving Queensland named the best family beach in the state with an average 150,000 visitors each year. Daniel is nervously excited about the upcoming summer, which will truly test him, head barista Mitch Pask and three part-time staff. Daniel credited Mitch with teaching him all he knows about the hospitality industry and the handy business owner built all of the shop’s fittings on his own. Finding good quality staff was not an issue as more than 250 people responded to one job advertisement.

Frocals has made great use of social media, posting up specials like 50c avocados when suppliers in Glass House Mountains have an overstock that they send to Daniel to sell off.

Conscious of the potential to franchise in the future, Daniel spent a lot of time on the branding of the business so it could easily be transferred to any location. But for now, he is content to build the Kings Beach premises up to its full potential. “The future of Caloundra is a big positive, there is a really great collective mindset here with everyone supporting one another for the benefit of everyone,” he said.

DANIEL'S START-UP TIPS 1. Know all your costs before starting.

Plan the first six months in detail.

Give yourself focus so you know where you can save money and budget for the things that you need.

2. Quality is king. Don’t take the shortest or easiest way as that will downgrade your product.

3. Know your competition. Look at what other people are doing and what their processes are and don’t be afraid to tap into people with industry knowledge.

4. Find a niche. If there are already 10 coffee shops or 10 grocery shops in your area, find a point of difference and make people understand why they should come to you.

5. Get involved in the community.
