BUSINESS NETWORKING Caloundra Chamber members were greeted by a flurry of snowflakes at the year-end Christmas themed Business After Hours event in December at Aussie World.

MC Bill Darby welcomed everyone to the Chamber’s largest networking event with over 200 people in attendance, handing out prizes and congratulations to chamber members for achievements during the year.

By all accounts this is going to be a good year for the Sunshine Coast and an even better year for Caloundra.

I

t’s been a long time since I have seen the level of interest in the area that I am seeing now. Just as other pockets of the Sunshine Coast have grown and pulled together to create buzzing, attractive and exciting precincts, that attract locals, tourist and investors alike Caloundra is attracting more interest than ever before.

Aura (the Caloundra South project) is well underway and the new road will deliver more people to our doorsteps to experience the array of festivals, markets and the unique shopping precinct which is set to grow and improve.

The Chamber staff and committee take the role we play very seriously. So much so that we are prepared to be the voice of the region that ensures our vibrant community continues to shine.

We are the “voice of the village” and will advocate on behalf of the business community, tourism, community events and anything else that helps to promote and grow Caloundra. Our opinion is sought by the media from all over Queensland as they have come to recognise that Caloundra has a strong Chamber of Commerce who are committed to the economic growth of the region. Everyone wins when we have a strong, viable and vibrant community.

The committee and I are in agreement that we are in a position to grab the attention of the stakeholders necessary, to maximise the cultural and economic landscape that our wonderful village has to offer. We are committed to do this for all those that see themselves as connected with Caloundra. However primarily we are a Chamber of Commerce. We understand the benefits that a culturally diverse community can offer its businesses and its business opportunities, but we still need two primary resources to continue to attain the results we have achieved in the past. Those two factors are 1) members - the sheer weight of numbers ensures our voice is heard and 2) finance - as this allows us to engage the talent and technical innovative support that we need to succeed.

For this reason we encourage every business to become a member - not because you expect something in return - but because you love Caloundra and want to be a part of what we are doing for the region. Join us today and be a part of something great in 2016!

CALOUNDRA’S WEDDING SHOWCASE As the sun sets, in the distance behind the Glass House Mountains, silhouetting their majesty while simultaneously casting a warm glow over the blue-green Pumicestone Passage and sparkling white sand on Bulcock Beach, it is not surprising that this pocket of Caloundra is becoming a hot spot for weddings.

I

n fact, there are many outdoor locations right around Caloundra that boast very unique characteristics. Shelly Beach offers an elevated grassed foreshore and rock pools that provide a perfect backdrop for photographs. Kings Beach Headland has a grassed amphitheatre in Anzac Park that overlooks the Pacific Ocean and the coastline.

At Happy Valley the wedding ceremony spot faces across the water to the northern tip of Bribie Island which is itself another location.

The list goes on..

With so much to offer, it is little wonder that Michael Flocke, owner of Deluxe Kombi Service, had a light bulb moment in 2014 and started some conversations with other Caloundra based wedding suppliers like celebrant Shona Andersen. Those discussions quickly gained momentum and the attention of 16 suppliers initially and the Caloundra Wedding Collective was formed.

Now with more than 50 members, including venues and service providers, they are in their second year of growth. Celebrant Paula Koda said the group was born from the desire to highlight the beauty of Caloundra as a destination perfect for those wanting to celebrate love.

“We are quite often overlooked when one thinks of a Sunshine Coast wedding,” she said.

“Historically, other parts of the Sunshine Coast received greater attention, so we joined forces to promote this end of town for the unique place that locals know it to be. The passion of every local supplier is evident and they all want to raise the profile of Caloundra.”

The not-for-profit organisation channels every membership fee into advertising and its committee members are volunteers. Given the strong response they have received in their first year of operation, Paula believes the foundations are being laid for Caloundra to see a marked improvement in the number of weddings held here in the near future.

“Now we have an online portal for brides to discover this end of the Coast and they can easily choose all of the suppliers they need, to be able to create the wedding they desire” she said. We also have an active social media presence. With these tools we are starting to see more people finding Caloundra. ” Founding member Lou O’Brien, from Images

The Collective held their inaugural Open Day in February last year to great fanfare. Paula said everyone who had attended loved how relaxed and informative it was, how friendly the suppliers were and most made bookings with suppliers as a result of visiting. “I was blown away, with the results from our first one,” she said.

COVER STORY Far from being another expo-style event, the Wedding Collective’s Open Day on February 21 allows couples to see venues throughout Caloundra open and set up as though they were ready for a wedding reception. “Guests can walk into a room and don’t have to visualise what it could look like, they can see it there for themselves,” Paula said. “There will also be ceremony set-ups in popular locations and visitors can hop onto a Deluxe Kombi, which will be doing a loop from the Grand Pacific at Bulcock Beach around the foreshore to King Beach and back again.

“They can just rock up on the day, collect a Passport to Happiness at their first venue, which will show them the trail map of where they can go to see the set-ups, and off they go,” she said. “When choosing wedding suppliers, it is so important for couples to be able to form a connection with them and have that face to face contact to be able to chat and ask questions.”

THE CITY OF COLOUR It has been well publicised that Aura - the city of colour - will deliver 20,000 dwellings to become home to 50,000 people over the next 30 years. But what isn’t as widely known is this development has been recognised by the Green Building Council of Australia, which has endorsed the master plan with the highly coveted 6 Star Green Star Communities rating.

he rating tool relies on scientific and holistic analysis, which has been peer reviewed and ratified by more than 1,000 industry and sustainable development experts, and is Australia’s highest standard for design excellence, economic prosperity, liveability and environmental responsibility.

Stockland development manager Mark Stephens said it signified world leadership for the design of the future city.

The Aura master plan requires the rehabilitation of a 7 square km conservation park, which will establish a significant ecological buffer between the development and the Pumicestone Passage with urban development located some 5km west of Bribie Island. Water quality monitoring stations are located in the main creeks with samples to be taken every month and after every major rain event. Stockland has pledged to conduct monitoring for the life of the project, which will be reported each year to track waterway health.

Volunteers Australia have collaborated to support, fund and manage a team of enthusiastic Green Army participants to restore the ecological health of the Bells Creek Catchment. The Green Army is a hands-on, practical environmental action programme that supports local environmental and heritage conservation projects across Australia.

We will dedicate more than one-third as an environmental conservation zone Mr Stephens said this work was bringing the land “back from the brink” after decades of use as former pine plantation and livestock grazing land. “We will ultimately dedicate more than one-third of the site as an environmental conservation zone, complete with an ecology centre that will become a resource for the

education of future generations on effective land care and management,” he said.

Nine local members aged between 17 and 24 spent six months last year undertaking preliminary work to improve the 24 square km Aura site by eradicating invasive weeds from more than 5 square km of streambank, sedge land and native forests. They also constructed ‘Aura Flora’, a training nursery shade house that will later become part of the community native nursery.

SEQ Catchments project manager Susie Chapman said they used indigenous plantings in some cases to encourage the proliferation of native flora and fauna. “Expert advice and encouragement has been generously provided by the Barung Landcare Nursery, and local botanical legend Ann Moran,” she said. “The team has also been lucky to work with fauna expert Paul Smith through the Faunawatch network, setting hair traps and learning frog calls.”

significant developments in the country. “It has the potential to really impact and change the nature of the southern Sunshine Coast,” he said. “This should be a positive impact, but a process of constant review and investment will be necessary to manage the changes, both expected and unexpected. I think overall the development will lead to better water quality outcomes for the Pumicestone Passage than the current degraded forestry and grazing land.”

CALOUNDRA’S NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION Have you ever seen such traffic? Forget about the Bruce Highway which at times has been reduced to a crawl for hours on end. Bulcock Street and Bowman Rd have at times been a carpark of their own as visitors to Caloundra stream in from just about everywhere. The capacity of our parks, beaches, restaurants and roads have been stretched to the limit.

T

here are a number of reasons why Caloundra has been enjoying a bumper holiday season. The obvious reasons (and perhaps the most relevant) are the great weather we’ve been getting and the weak Aussie dollar. With overseas travel comparatively expensive, domestic holidays are cheaper for southerners and great value for international tourists.

In addition to the regional promotion we receive from Visit Sunshine Coast, the Caloundra community can also take credit for our surge in economic fortune. The proliferation of social media now focussing on Caloundra has grown substantially.

The reach of Facebook pages showcasing the Caloundra Street Fair, the Twilight Markets, the Caloundra Music Festival, Paisley Park Project and others really make a difference.

Highly successful venues such as the Drift Bar are attracting a new and younger crowd into town. Activities such as Caloundra Jetski Safaris are unique attractions that can’t be experienced anywhere else on the Coast.

around Caloundra that momentum continues to build.

To the full credit of Caloundra locals, recent press in Toowoomba highlighted the cleanliness of our destination.

There’s been so much happening in and around Caloundra that momentum continues to build The letter to the editor made specific note of the civic pride Caloundra enjoyed as local people routinely collect stray rubbish whilst out on their morning walk. First-time guests staying at my resort comment on the manicured presentation of recreational parks, gardens and public BBQ areas in and around the town. We have a lot to be thankful for.

Full marks also to Caloundra’s event coordinators, business groups, environmental

groups, community organisations and passionate local ambassadors. Your efforts are all contributing to a cleaner, friendlier and more vibrant town.

With my role at Caloundra Tourism and the Chamber of Commerce, I benefit from hearing a broad cross-section of views regarding Caloundra and its many facets. As would be apparent to most, the Chamber is focussed primarily on business development, destination marketing and economic growth.

I guess due to its profile and high level of engagement in the town, the Chamber has also become a sounding board for personal grievances and complaints.

On a somewhat less positive note, one thing that’s becoming increasingly obvious as Caloundra’s popularity grows is some businesses in the town seem to have forgotten how fortunate we are to be in Caloundra.

Albeit the minority, some traders (even some accommodation providers) have either been here too long or have simply not travelled very far afield and have lost their perspective.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

All of us who are part of the Caloundra community know that the CBD (and some of the areas around Caloundra) are tired and in need of a facelift. We also believe that Council has fallen short of many of its obligations in the past to deliver timely infrastructure improvements. Be that as it may, the way to maximise a business’s potential is to make the most of what you have - regardless.

Those who travel widely realise most places in the world are up against far greater challenges than us. In less privileged locations, business and tourism operators innovate, collaborate and promote their offerings with vigour and enthusiasm. If they want to prosper, they simply have no choice but to provide a great product at a competitive price and deliver amazing customer service - every single time.

The harsh reality is that some Caloundra businesses are not awesome. Some proprietors and their staff don’t deliver a positive and memorable customer experience. Some businesses are lack lustre in their appearance and the people in them drag the town down with negative attitudes. This often isn’t lost on the guests where I work and it’s not helping.

It’s a fact of life that blaming the Council or the Chamber (or anybody else for that matter) for things that don’t go our way is far more satisfying than taking responsibility for our own decisions. These attitudes are by no means unique to Caloundra but we have our fair share.

I put the challenge out to all of Caloundra In 2016, I put the challenge out to all of Caloundra’s many and varied businesses. Let’s make this the year we talk Caloundra up, work as a united team, attract other great businesses here and make our town the very best it can be. We share one of the best destinations in the world and we should all be enormously proud.

HEALTHY BUSINESS

A HEALTHIER FUTURE FOR CALOUNDRA The next generation of leaders have spoken. They want to see the Sunshine Coast become the healthiest place on earth by 2030.

T

his vision comes from Generation Innovation, an initiative led by founder Ted O’Brien. He surveyed 1000 Sunshine Coast youth, who helped to create four alternative scenarios depicting life on the Sunshine Coast in 2030.

“Feedback from the younger generations leads to all things relating to good health: healthy tourism, healthy foods, healthy environment, healthy relationships, healthy community, Mr O’Brien said.

It is music to the ears of Christine and Ian Nicolson, owners of Scenar Sports Health, located in Dicky Beach. Mr Nicolson said he couldn’t think of a better future for his sons Thomas, 8, and Ben, 6, than to live in a region that promoted healthy living in all aspects from eating through to lifestyle.

Becoming the healthiest place on earth is something that could be achieved on the coast “It gladdens my heart that this has come from the mouths of young people,” he said. “Older people seem to be stuck in the mindset that ‘there is a pill for every illness’, but the younger generation can see that is not really working as there is still a lot of sickness, ill health and unhappiness around. Other scenarios for the future may focus on development or boosting infrastructure, but that can only be better if it involves healthy, happy people.”

The Nicolsons started Scenar Sports Health three and a half years ago. The Scenar is a noninvasive, non-toxic, drug-free medical technology developed for the Russian Space Program to help cosmonauts maintain their health while in space. Mr Nicolson is living proof that it works. He went from having spent some time in a wheelchair and facing the prospect of ongoing spinal surgeries eight years ago, to the pain free and active 52-year-old he is today.

Becoming the healthiest place on earth is something Mr Nicolson said could be achieved on the Coast despite the fragmented state of alternative health therapies at the moment. “There is such a diverse group of health practitioners across the Sunshine Coast and I believe we collectively have more here per capita than anywhere in Australia, but we’re not cohesive and that needs to change,” he said.

The Nicolsons said they had found their calling in helping people to restore balance to their lives via the broad range of therapies they practice in their clinic and hoped people would continue to extend their thought processes outside the box when it came to their health and wellbeing.

“We would love to get on board this healthier future for Caloundra and the wider region,” they said. “Young people are the next custodians of the planet and if we can leave this planet with a new generation that is more in tune with the importance of health over money, we will be happy.”

GAMES FOR THE REAL SUPERHEROES 4000 uniformed competitors to descend on the Coast in October.

T

he Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games are held every second year at a new location, and this year it’s being hosted right here on our doorstep. The Sunshine Coast can expect to welcome over 4000 participants and between 6000 - 7000 supporters made up of family and friends from all over Australia, as well as New Zealand and other Pacific Nations.

First held in 1984, the inaugural Australian National Police Games were founded with the intention of bringing Police Service personnel together under the common banner of sport.

This spirit of friendly competition has been expanded to embrace competitors from New Zealand and other Pacific nations. From 1999, all full-time Emergency Services personnel were also invited to compete.

The Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games builds camaraderie and promotes a healthy life style through participation in sport, while heightening the public’s awareness of Police and Emergency Services.

“One of our major objectives is to promote more women in sport as well as promote more women in the emergency services. That will involve encouraging more active participation from our own ladies in the emergency services.

We also aim to promote the services to those

women on the Sunshine Coast who have an interest or a burning desire for a career in the emergency services”, says Assistant Game Manager Greg Croft.

Queensland has only hosted this event twice before, once on the Gold Coast in 2001 and prior to that in 1999, in Brisbane. A program of over 50 different sports with competitors of all ages and abilities will be delivered including archery, shooting, outrigging, surfing, mountain biking as well as the traditional team sports.

Games Manager, Brett Price and his team of 5 other full time employees have their office based at the Sunshine Coast Stadium and work exclusively on the promotion and management of the games. They are already connecting with accommodation and service suppliers to help provide a seamless experience to the more than 10,000 people expected over that period in October.

RELATIONSHIPS AT WORK With so many Caloundra businesses owned and operated by couples, Caloundra Buzz talked to some of them to find out their personal stories and how they make a business partnership work.

Dean and Deborah Haspell – Blue Water Kayak Tours - Working together for 15 years

D

ean and Deborah have always had an affiliation with the water. When they first met, Dean was on the ocean sailing most weekends with his family and he later became a shipwright apprentice. The couple spent most weekends on the water south of Sydney and by the time they were 22, they had built their first yacht, moved from the Western Suburbs of Sydney and spent a year sailing up and down the East Coast of Australia.

“I guess the passion to spend our lives living and working on the water started when we were teenagers,” Deborah said. They married in 1979 and began operating Blue Water Kayak Tours in 2000. “Not many couples have the

While they both take tours, either together or separately, Deborah manages the majority of the office work to free up Dean for his work with the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service. Their children also help out during busier times. “Life is challenging these days, such a fast pace,” Deborah said.

Deborah found it hard to find the right words

of advice for other couples in business together because it had been a natural fit for the Haspells from day one. “Dean and I always seem much happier the more time we can spend together, whether that stems from our time living on our yachts over the years, building boats or guiding paddlers in kayaks on our tours. hile Wroxton was 18 when he started working for the Innes family in 1990, it took another 10 years before their daughter Amanda finished her university studies and joined the Saddlery Trading Company. Wroxton said he met Amanda 12 months after he took on a junior role at the company and eventually managed to pluck up the courage to ask out the boss’s daughter.

Established in 1973, the business had a well-respected name by the time Wroxton and Amanda began to take managing director roles in 2003. Their common interests and goals have led them down a path of great success, with the business now employing 40 Sunshine Coast people.

While they have spent 15 years celebrating their successes and learning from their mistakes as a team, Wroxton said by far the most challenging thing they have had to face was the death of Amanda’s parents in a shock accident two years ago. They were all in India for a wedding and were driving home in convoy when a truck crashed into the car Amanda’s parents were driving.

“The most challenging thing we have had to deal with is losing them,” Wroxton said. “We had already started to take over the business, but they were still with us every day, even if

SKYDIVE FOR A CAUSE Nikki Rowe made history late last year when she became the first person to sign up and complete the Skydive for a Cause.

T

he new initiative is run by Sunshine Coast Skydivers in a bid to encourage fundraising for the region’s myriad charities, sports clubs and not-for-profit organisations. Ms Rowe decided to get on board to raise money and awareness for CPRS, a chronic pain condition she sustained after being in a car crash on her son’s first day of school in 2015.

The lively 25-year-old went from a fit and active mother to being in constant pain with CPRS affecting most of the left side of her body, as well as her right leg, her immune system, metabolism, sensory system, brain and muscle function.

Despite this dramatic lifestyle change, Ms Rowe said she was determined to keep positive and

focus on her recovery while raising the profile of the condition that is not widely known. “I’ve always been an adrenaline junkie,” she said. But chronic illness or disability is not the end. Really, it’s just a beginning in a new direction.”

Ms Rowe quickly met her $460 fundraising target to secure herself a 7,000ft skydive, but was unable complete it herself. So her longtime friend Kirin Clarke-Tinson made the tandem jump in her honour late in November.

Sunshine Coast Skydivers marketing manager Alana Hall said anyone could register for Skydive for a Cause. “Skydiving is such a great experience and this is also a great way to create awareness around your charity and raise funds for it,” she said. “Companies can use this fundraising challenge as a team building

activity in which they pay the tax deductible registration fee for their staff, who then create fundraising activities to reach their targets and participate in a company group skydive.”

Sunshine Coast Skydivers, based at Caloundra Aerodrome, are prepared to assist with many helpful tips to make sure those who sign up, reach their fundraising target. Ms Hall said everyone was a winner in the program and even if participants don’t quite hit the mark, the funds will go to their intended destination.

KATRINA’S CLAY KREATIONS Having grown up in New Zealand which is well known for its famous potters, it was little wonder that Katrina from Katrina’s Clay Kreations would be inspired by a few of her art teachers, who were all potters themselves.

atrina learned to pot at Mango Farm Pottery, which lead to her working in production, as a pottery thrower for a number of years. After working at the Clay Shed, a wholesaler and supplier of Australian Clay products in Kunda Park, she branched out, and started her own business. It was a natural choice to display and sell her wares at the various markets on the coast, which she has been doing for close to 10 years.

Katrina now lives in the hinterland, Eudlo with her partner and 2 daughters and has her own studio which houses 3 potter’s wheels and 2 kilns.

Katrina’s Clay Kreations has a regular following at the Caloundra Street Fair and Katrina says the most popular item is the extra-large dog bowls with the anti-ant moat design. “With our hot weather here on the coast, the ceramic is a perfect medium to keep the water clearer and cooler” says Katrina. Other popular products include outdoor and gardening products, plus lots of brightly coloured giftware. “I get my inspiration and new ideas from interacting with people on a Sunday and getting feedback from my regular clients”. Other favourites include mozi coil holders (fish, frogs) as well as traditional mozi coil pots which can also be used with candles or tealights.

Katrina also keeps busy as Vice President of a larger group of dedicated potters, Suncoast Clayworkers, which was formed at the beginning of 2002, with the idea of bringing

together like minded people. They have over 120 active members, which include potters, ceramic artists, kiln builders and specialists in public art, who meet regularly to exchange ideas, learn new skills and get involved in the ongoing promotion of clay art in all its forms.

Some ceramic products are regarded as fine art, while others are regarded as decorative, industrial or applied art objects, or as artifacts in archaeology.

WHERE WAS POTTERY FIRST MADE? The potter’s wheel was invented in Mesopotamia sometime between 6,000 and 4,000 BC (Ubaid period) and revolutionised pottery production.

WHAT ARE THE THREE MAIN TYPES OF CLAY? The three most common types of clay are earthenware, stoneware, and kaolin. Earthenware, or common clay, contains many minerals, such as iron oxide (rust), and in its raw state may contain some sand or small bits of rock.

WHAT IS CLAY MADE OUT OF? Clay comes from the ground, usually in areas where streams or rivers once flowed. It is made from minerals, plant life, and animals - all the ingredients of soil. Over time, water pressure breaks up the remains of flora, fauna, and minerals, pulverizing them into fine particles.
