fantastic nights all chosen by young people for young people!! We have the first youth club trip on the 11th of May to Thorpe Park, which again was chosen by the young people that attend our club.

Over June and July we will have a number of hot topics that the young people will chose, these are issues that the young people feel that they would like help and support on. These range from education & employment all the way to smoking. As the sun is out we will be focusing on outdoor games and finishing term with a big party!!

Easter Fair Caldecote Youth Project held their first fundraiser, The Easter Fair. The sun came out and it was a great afternoon with an Easter Bonnet Parade led by Caldecote’s very own Easter Bunny, pony rides, games, delicious cakes and lots of craft and garden stalls.

We had our very own Caldecote Cake Competition, the winners were: Adult: 1st Angela Talbot, 2nd Kirsten Monk & 3rd Rebecca Campbell.

London Marathon Appeal update First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for giving their support by donating to the Liam Fairhurst Foundation. To date, the total raised stands at over £1,400, however my just giving webpage http://www.justgiving.com/Rob-Monk is still open and is able to continue accepting donations for a little while yet. For anyone who was intending to give their support, but didn’t manage to get round to it before Marathon day, it is not too late and any further money, however small, would be very gratefully received.

The whole Marathon experience was fantastic. The weather was very good, especially for the spectators, I certainly wouldn’t have wanted it be any hotter though. My journey into London didn’t pass without incident.

As my lift (with Alex’s dad – Mark) drew up at Stratford station, we could hear a strange thudding noise & it turned out the car had got a puncture!! A good job it hadn’t happened a few miles earlier whilst we were still on the M11. From Stratford I got on the Docklands Light Railway, which took me to Greenwich Park station, from here it was a short walk to the start.

Although, it was 24 years previously, memories of running the London Marathon before came flooding back

to me as I lined up at the start. This experience was a real boost in helping me prepare mentally for what lay ahead. I was fairly near the front of the line-up when the race began and it only took me 4 minutes to cross the start. It was here that two of my friends (independently of each other) have since told me they saw me on TV!!

I last ran the Marathon in 1990, when I was 21. Then, I got round in less than 4 hours and I was rather hoping that I might be able to manage to do that again. I got to half way in 1 hour & 53 minutes and the 20 mile marker with an hour to spare, but I found the last six miles hard going and unfortunately I didn’t quite manage it. I knew my 3 children Ivan, Saskia & Natalia would be watching somewhere near the 25 mile point and this gave me a tremendous incentive not to be walking at this point, even though my legs had well and truly had enough of running by then.

Having completed the London Marathon twice now, I feel that I have no choice, but to do it at least once more, because I simply don’t have enough medals to give my children one each. So I have already made my application for a place next year.

Caldecote Dry Drayton and Hardwick Community Car Scheme/Doctor's run

The Scheme is now busier than ever with more and more passengers needing both lifts to surgeries and the hospitals as well as the demand for more social events such as essential shopping and visiting unwell relatives.

We try hard to prioritise medical runs but occasionally do not have enough drivers. Thus the first plea is to ask for more drivers. If you think you could help, even very occasionally, please do get in touch with Sheila Stephenson. Tel.01954 210638 or email : sheila1pc@yahoo.co.uk. This is a very serious request as our coordinators try hard to match all requests to a driver and the more drivers we have the easier it is for everyone. The passengers are always very very grateful. We hate having to explain we simply don't have a driver.

Petrol costs are reimbursed by the passenger who pays £3.50 for surgery runs and 35p per mile for other runs. At the moment an additional 15p per mile is reimbursed to the driver by Cambridgeshire County Council at regular intervals. All drivers have to be CRB/DBS checked at no cost to themselves.

Work on Bourn Brook

Volunteers met on Saturday 22nd March to improve habitat along the Bourn Brook by coppicing along the south bank near Toft The Bourn Brook supports a population of water vole, which likes lush grass and herbs near the water. Coppicing does not kill the trees, but allows more light to reach the water and banks of the brook, promoting the growth of plants. Water voles are arguably our fastest declining mammal, and this work helps preserve an important refuge area for them.

While there will be no more coppicing tasks until next winter (due to birds nesting), if you are interested in practical work on the Bourn Brook, there will be plenty of opportunities in July to get some waders on and help control the spread of Himalayan balsam (dates nearer the time).

Finally, the Wildlife Trust will be repeating our survey of the Bourn Brook for water vole, from Byron’s Pool to Caxton Moats, which was first carried out in 2011. This survey will be carried out with help from the Cambridgeshire Mammal Group and results will be made available to anyone who is interested.

TRADING STANDARDS SERVICE

Be cautious of traders who call at your door Advice from Trading Standards In the last 5 years it is estimated that £1 million has been paid to rogue traders by older residents living in Cambridgeshire. In most cases the rogue trader will have called at the customer’s door offering to do work on their house or garden, and will have overcharged for unnecessary and shoddy work.

These are serious crimes, in some cases costing the customer their life savings and often leading to them being fearful in their own homes.

At Trading Standards we would like to make you aware of the telltale signs of rogue traders to help you avoid them.

We would also urge you to pass this advice on to elderly friends and relatives.

Rogue traders typically:

1. Call at the door offering services such as replacing a loose roof tile, roof or gutter cleaning, gardening, house maintenance, jet washing, driveway paving and tree felling.

2. Engage with the customer to win their trust e.g. claiming to have been before, claiming they are working up the street etc. They will seem very friendly and chatty.

3. Start with a small job such as gutter cleaning and then claim further work is needed. This subsequent work will not be quoted for and will run into thousands of pounds.

4. Make fraudulent claims e.g. moss growth on a roof causes severe damage and needs to be washed off, painting a roof is necessary to protect it.

5. Fail to give you written notice of your right to cancel which is required for most contracts agreed at home.

6. Use intimidation to extort money and often take the customer to a bank or cash point to withdraw cash (a criminal offence).

7. Return again and again demanding further payment for bogus reasons e.g. claiming that VAT has not been paid. t traders are currently at your property, are in the If you think rogue traders are currently at your property, are in the vicinity or are due to return, please contact the police on 999. If you think rogue traders have done some work for you but have left, contact our advice partner, Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline, on 08454 040506 for advice.

Re-Cycling Open Day at Waterbeach There will be fun for all the family at this year’s Re-Cycling Open Day on Saturday 21st June at AmeyCespa’s waste management park on the A10 at Waterbeach.

With the Tour de France coming to Cambridge, there is a cycling theme to this year’s event, with a cycle try-out around a recycled track and cyclepowered smoothie makers showing how to reduce food waste.

Visitors to the Open Day will be able to see a range of reuse, recycling and composting exhibitions, including cycle repair workshops from Opportunities Without Limits, the Sawston based charity that refurbish bikes. There will also be coach tours of the Waterbeach site to see how Cambridgeshire’s waste is recycled, and walking tours of AmeyCespa’s Mechanical Biological Treatment plant and Materials Recycling Facility.

There will be model-making activities using waste packaging and competitions, including the chance to win bike lights if you bring along household batteries for recycling at the DHL electrical recycling stand.

The Open Day is a joint venture between AmeyCespa and Cambridgeshire County Council. Entry is free and the event is open from 10am to 4pm. For more information call (01223) 861010.

Caldecote Playgroup Summer Term We have been re-telling popular traditional stories such as Jack and the Beanstalk, The Three Little Pigs and Goldilocks and the Three Bears, with props. The children have been able to adapt and change the story using their own ideas e.g. Goldilocks had a sleepover with the three bears.

We introduced a mud kitchen in the outdoor area and the children have been enjoying making mud pies. They used a range of kitchen utensils and used words such as whisking, mixing, baking, and pouring while making their muddy creations.

Playgroup Sessions We are pleased to be offering warm school lunches from the school kitchen to children attending afternoon sessions or staying for lunch at £2.20 a meal. Please book and pay a day in advance. School lunch produce are freshly sourced from the local area.

From the Rector Dear Friends, Those of you who remember John Inge, the previous Bishop of Huntingdon, will be sad to know that his wife, Denise, died on Easter Day.

Please keep John and his family in your prayers.

As well as being news of personal importance to many people, the death of a believer on Easter Day is one of the most powerful messages possible about the reality and the nature of the resurrection. For all of the celebration of excitement of the day, we can’t fool ourselves that belief in the resurrection means all this life’s struggles no longer count. Christians have lived through enough though things over the centuries to know that a simple message that God takes all our problems away simply isn’t true.

Often, at funerals, I speak about the words of Jesus in John 14, when he says: “I am the way, the truth and the life”. In the time of Jesus, if somebody asked for directions, you wouldn’t reply: “Turn left after the synagogue and it’s just before the forum on the right next to the Emperor’s Head”.

Rather, the response in those lessbusy times would be “I am the way” and you would take the person to the place they were looking for.

Jesus gives no promise that those who follow Him will escape life’s challenges and knocks. What He does promise if to walk with us, to lead us on a route He’s already followed, to keep us safe, and never to leave us, in this life or the next. And that gives us confidence, not that things will be easy, but that, with Jesus, nothing need frighten those who walk with Him.

St Michael’s Church is a bit of a way out of Highfields, but as the parish church it is there as a place of prayer for everybody in the parish. Prayers are not kept in by walls, and can reach into any place and any situation. If you have particular concerns or needs for prayer – either personal things, or things to do with your street or with our village as a whole – please give Mike, your Rector, a ring on 01223 260095 or email him at mikebooker@lordsbridge.org with the information. Please be assured that your request will be kept private unless you ask for the prayers to be in the context of a church service. The main thing is that when we pray, God hears, and when God gets to work, things happen. Not necessarily what we might have hoped for or expected, but prayer changes things!

Jam Jar penny collection "Recently a group of us did another count of pennies and other coins that people had kindly sent in. This time they amounted to £40.70 and brought our total to £1759.26. Several people had brought me their collections - and we are very grateful to them all - so it was time for a count!

As you will see we are now well on the way to £1800.00 so do please keep collecting. (We are still aiming at

ÂŁ2000!) If you have been and still are collecting, do please carry on. Any container will do - chocolate boxes/old tins/ glass jars/plastic bags etc - we welcome anything with coins in it and it all helps the total!

If you haven't been collecting we would be most grateful for anyone to start. The money goes to the restoration of the Church - the oldest building in the village. VILLAGE CHRISTMAS TREE A Christmas Tree has been planted in the Village Hall Green by local residents, which we hope will be sponsored by local businesses.

The aim is to use the Christmas Tree as a focal point during the Christmas period – to switch on the lights on the first Sunday in December for the village to gather and sing carols, the lights to be on every evening thereafter in December from 4.00pm to 10.00pm.

CALDECOTE PRIMARY SCHOOL Our school motto is ‘Happy, Healthy, High Achieving’ and we endeavour to ensure that all our children attain all three in equal measure. As well as academic achievement, we always try to celebrate pupils’ achievement outside school. This is done through our bi-weekly newsletter and our weekly Celebration assembly on Friday afternoons.

Over the Spring term some of the achievements we celebrated were: - Owen Shield, Year 6, who achieved Bronze in the National Primary Maths Challenge. There were over 77,000 entries and Owen was just one mark off achieving silver (only 256 children achieved medals) - Evie Joseph, Year 6, who takes part in national competitions across the country - Marley Ugarte Edwards, Year 5, has been chosen to be part of Cambridge United Football Academy for the Under 10s - Esther Jacklin, Year 6, winning her first 700m sprint in rowing in the U12 section - Imogen Halgarth, Louise Grover, Peter Watts, Aidan Gower, Max Segrave (Year 6), Abi Smith, Emma Stewart & Marley Ugarte Edwards (Year6) who represented the school at the Cross Country Championships relay event. It was the first time they had taken part in this team event and the girls came a

magnificent 12th (out of 111 teams) and the boys a very creditable 34th (out of 123).

Special mention to Abi who came 2nd in her heat and Imogen who came 3rd We also regularly celebrate achievement for various dance genres and playing musical instruments. Our children are very talented and fortunate to have parents who are willing to support them, devoting endless hours of driving to venues or organising their whole lives around the children’s commitments!

‘Archibald’s War’, Year 3 & 4 production, was a great success and we were thrilled to have so many of our older residents come to watch. We were amazed by the generosity of the audience as our collection came to over £70! This money will go to offset the costs of the licence fee we have to pay for these types of productions – thank you all for your support.

Our environment team are very busy sorting out raised beds and planting.

We are always on the look out for a willing pair of hands who could give up an hour or two now and then to help keep beds weed free and generally tend to the plants and cultivated areas around the school.

This could be within school time with small groups of children (who are all very well behaved) or at other times when the school grounds would be open. If you feel you could help, please contact the school office.

We were also thrilled to have a visit from Jackie Dobbyne (Managing Director) and Nathalie Cameron (Marketing Assistant) from Cambridge Publishing Management

who work out of Burr Elm Court, Main Street, Caldecote. They are a leading provider of book production solutions for publishers and non-publishers. As part of World Book Night they kindly donated seven fantastic picture books that can be used across the school to stimulate reading and writing. We are hoping we can further develop our link with the local company in the future.

We are all looking forward to our summer events of sports day, years 5 & 6 production and our music concert.

Look out for more information about these as we would welcome support from the village. We will also be saying a fond farewell to our Year 6 children who will be moving to secondary school and happily welcoming our new reception children to their ‘big school’.

On a political note, you may have heard that Cambridgeshire schools will be getting a fairer deal on funding as from 2015. For Caldecote, it will mean approximately an extra £50,000 per year which will be a very welcome addition to our very stretched budget.

I know many families supported our campaign for Fairer Funding for which we are very thankful.

Hopefully the sun will start to shine and the children can start using the school field, which they find very exciting. Each year they re-discover parts of the field they had forgotten about and it is a joy to watch them growing into ‘Happy, Healthy, High Achieving’ children.

TOUR de CALDECOTE, MONDAY 7th JULY

To celebrate the Tour de France being in Cambridge, Caldecote Primary School will be holding their own ‘race’ around the village. Planning is in the early stages but we will be inviting parents, family and any residents to join with us on a ride, scoot, walk or jog around the village.

If you don’t fancy actively joining in we would really appreciate your support on the route with flags, banners and applause.

Care Clubs Care Clubs had a very busy & fun-filled Easter holidays. We welcomed four new children to our Holiday Club and they said that they had a great time.

We did lots of fun activities including making homemade hot cross buns & ice-cream (which was very yummy), an Easter egg hunt and an Easter bonnet competition (which was won by Charlie

Ward & Madeleine Oliver). We also had lots of fun visiting the park as well as loads of craft activities.

And from 8.15am to 9am and 3.15pm to 6pm during term time.

We would like to say ‘Congratulations!’ to Kate Hacker & family on the birth of her beautiful daughter, Annabel Rose.

SCDC Local Development Plan – Update Following on from my last report, the draft SCDC Local Development Plan was discussed at the Extraordinary Full Council Meeting of 13th March 2014.

There was no debate allowed, but councillors were able to speak for 3 minutes on each of the 3 parts into which the discussion had been structured. This confirmed the view that the Administration would do anything to throttle dissent and get the plan through.

Councillors voted by a slim majority to accept the proposed draft local plan and send it to the planning inspector for examination. Final vote count was 27 for, 21 against and 5 abstentions. You can see how the councillors voted on my blog at http://bit.ly/LDPVote.

The draft plan was submitted to the Planning Inspector at the end of March.

The examination of this, and the Cambridge City plan, is expected to take place in October 2014. This is the stage where the fate of the proposal for Bourn Airfield Development will finally be decided. The StopBAD team are actively working toward putting together legal representation at the examination.

SCDC Business Workshops The business workshops from the South Cambridgeshire Business Support Service started up again in March 2014 and will run for 6 months.

These are half-day workshops are run

by Exemplas on behalf of the council, to help those running or thinking of starting a business in the district and cover subjects focusing on the specific needs of local businesses, including business planning, recruitment and websites and social media. Each workshop costs £10 +VAT, and anyone interested in attending can reserve a place by telephone 0844 346 0755 (Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.30pm) and pay by credit or debit card. Full details can be found by visiting www.exemplas.com/southcambs Local Transport This is a reminder of my appeal to residents who either use or think they may like to use the Whippet Bus No. 2 bus that goes through Caldecote.

Please contact me and let me have your views. I have had a few comments, but would particularly like to hear from those who may wish to use it or “a bus service” on how it could be improved to enable it to be used more often, e.g should it run earlier or later, which route will be better etc.

Superfast Broadband Following on from my previous report, please note that Highfields Caldecote is now fully served with fibre broadband.

BT did not deploy all the capacity available on the network, so residents on Highfields Road are finding they cannot order. I can confirm that BT is now deploying more capacity, and they expect the work (changing splitters and configurations at the exchange), will be completed by end of June 2014.

Anyone else who is not on Highfields Road but cannot order should email me tumi@tumihawkins.org.uk with name, address and telephone number, and I will follow up with BT via the reporting system that I have set up with them for this purpose.

For (old) Caldecote, the County Council’s Connecting Cambridgeshire project is making progress. It is expected that the Comberton exchange which serves that part of the village, will have the FTTC upgrades completed by September 2014. So watch this space.

A14 Upgrade Consultation by Highways Agency The Highways agency opened consultations on the revised A14 upgrade scheme on 7th April and it will run until 15 June 2014. Unfortunately, the agency is still not addressing the problem of traffic trying to access the M11 via Madingley Rise. However, at my request, they agreed to hold a small exhibition at The Hub, Cambourne on 13th May 2014, in addition to those planned to take place only for the villages along the route.

Community Help Groups A reminder of the ideas of a Bulk Oil Buying group and a “Shopping Buddy scheme” as mentioned in previous editions of the Journal. Bulk Oil Buying group is aimed at those who use oil for heating. Shopping Buddy Scheme is an idea to help each other and in particular our elderly neighbours to get food shopping done by giving lifts or doing the shopping on their behalf.

Tumi Hawkins Care Network Care Network specializes in getting appropriate information and support to older people who may not know where to turn. This can be anything from advice on benefits, befriending services, help getting out and about, or what to do if you’re worried about rogue

traders. This is not something that our volunteers offer directly; a Community Navigator is someone who helps make people aware of what services are out there so they can make an informed choice about how to live their life. We also help anyone who wants to set up community schemes themselves – from car schemes, to community cafes, to mobile warden groups.

Would you be interested in our existing volunteers, and could you benefit from the service?

All of what we do is completely free of charge – the project is funded to address unmet needs in Cambridgeshire, and as such we want to work with and compliment any existing groups. We’re not interested in competing or taking credit for the great work which I’m sure is already happening – more interested in combining resources so that more people can benefit.

The Start of the new municipal year following the ordinary elections in Caldecote sees a number of changes in Councillors. We welcome four new Parish Councillors who will all take office from May 27th 2014. Cllr Jamie Powell, Cllr Polly-Anne Field, Cllr Fiona Whelan and Cllr Sarah Brown. We also say goodbye to Cllrs John Newby, Doreen Francis, Helen Cartwright and Tom Footman. Cllr Footman has been a Parish Councillor for an impressive 44 years and his extraordinary breadth and depth of local knowledge will be missed, although we have it on good authority that the Parish Clerk will still be on the phone to him from time to time seeking the answer to some fantastically obscure question!

Traffic Matters.

As some will already know, the bid to have Highfields Rd resurfaced has been successful. The works are now set into the County Council’s Transport Delivery Plan, and are initially scheduled to take place in 2015/2016.

The work will consist of the resurfacing of Highfields Rd, removal of the speed thumps, removal of mini-roundabouts and replacement with T-Junctions, and redesigning of kerbs to afford a better visibility splay when exiting onto Highfields Rd. Attention now turns toward what replacement traffic calming measures should be put in place after the resurfacing work. The Parish Council will consult with the village on this before any decision is made.

Work is also progression on the School Parking situation. A proposal for timed waiting restrictions in the form of single yellow lines and yellow zig-zags is with the Highways authority and a public consultation will take place shortly.

We are looking for caring energetic people to join our Caldecote, Toft, Kingston, First Responder Scheme.

We need First Responders to volunteer a few flexible hours a week to attend local emergencies.

No previous medical background is needed as full training will be given

by East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust.

Why we need your help?

It has been recognised that sudden cardiac arrest claims around 150,000 lives each year in the United Kingdom, with survival rates being around 5% outside of a hospital setting.

If a person’s heart has stopped due to an accident or heart attack and is in a rhythm called ventricular fibrillation, the only way to get the heart into a more regular sustaining beat is to pass an electrical charge through the heart muscle. The first Four minutes are the most vital for the collapsed person and if FIRST AID and a DEFIBRILLATOR are on hand, then the chance of survival will increase considerably.

(For every minute after 4 minutes survival chances decrease by 10%) The types of calls you will be asked to attend are life threatening emergencies such as heart attacks, chest pain, cardiac arrests, fits and breathing problems. You will not be asked to attend dangerous incidents such as road traffic accidents, fights or childbirth. An Ambulance or Paramedic will always be dispatched to the incident and will take control as soon as they arrive. In the meantime by your actions you may have saved a life!
