A NOTE FROM THE

editor

“Home is where love resides, memories are created, friends always belong, and laughter never ends.” ~ Unknown Home is what you make it and a reflection of who you are and the life you want to live. Is your home inviting, cozy, and warm? Is it functional, minimalistic, and modern? Or do you have your own eclectic style? You spend more time there than anywhere else, so make it your own personal sanctuary to fulfill yourself and your needs. Maybe it’s time to update, remodel, or improve what you have? For this reason, we bring you our featured Home section with top ideas from local designers, contractors, and other industry leaders to give you the home of your dreams. We celebrate Women in Business in this issue, taking a moment to acknowledge successful women who handle all that is thrown at them with grace, who multitask at an insane pace, who navigate responsibilities with ease, and who still come out on top. Some also take care of children at home, assist aging parents, and oversee children’s school work while balancing these careers and taking care of their own physical health. On this note, don’t forget about all the amazing moms and dads—you can find gift ideas in our Mother’s Day and Father’s Day gift guide. Also, please enjoy meeting the sports-loving Mathews family—tennis-pro dad Gerald, realtor mom Casandra, and their three busy boys—athletes, models, and actors.

YOU’RE THE INSPIRATION OAKS CHRISTIAN GALA ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Gayle Barnes After a two-year hiatus, the Oaks Christian School (OCS) community celebrated the return of an in-person gala on March 26th with over 800 guests at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. The upscale evening, themed “You’re the Inspiration” and featuring Grammy Award-winning band Chicago, exceeded expectations by raising $1.3 million through silent, online, and live auctions, sponsorships, and ticket sales. The most memorable moment of the evening was the live announcement by Head of School Rob Black that the OCS Board of Trustees has approved the expansion of Oaks Christian into a TK through 12th grade school. Emceed by actor and OCS parent John O’Hurley, the evening featured a special performance by legendary singer/songwriter Paul Anka. And back for another year was the dynamic Jim Nye, auctioneer extraordinaire, who encouraged the generosity of guests and supported the school’s mission through the live auction, including an adorable Golden Doodle puppy auctioned at $12,000. THE

MATHEWS FAMILY Fostering Team Spirit Throughout the Southland By Lori Berezin

———— The sports-loving Mathews family includes Gerald Mathews, Casandra Walker-Mathews, and their three sons, Grae (12); Gavin (8); and Garrison (4). Tennis pro Gerald and realtor Casandra relocated from Texas 15 years ago to enjoy Southern California's competitive tennis culture and grow their businesses. The family eventually settled in Woodland Hills. As an active family that loves exploring, they fell in love with California’s incredible outdoors. “We love the small community feel of the valley and being a short drive from all the adventurous things we like to do, such as sur fing, hiking, wine tasting, and snowboarding,” says Casandra. “You can find us playing tennis or golf together or riding bikes and sur fing at the beach. At home, we enjoy playing games and singing the night away while watching musicals.” A former multi-sport athlete, playing soccer, basketball, baseball, and tennis, Gerald considers multi-sport learning the best way to excel. He’s built a successful business, Team G Tennis, courting the finest well-rounded athletes, training tennis players for collegiate and professional tennis, and helping them reach their full potential without losing their enthusiasm for the game. “Creating the highest-level players is a skill and passion of mine,” says Gerald. “What makes me different is that I’ve crafted the most fun and productive training environment in the industry. I love providing a high-quality, realistic training experience to a great number of the youth in Calabasas and the surrounding areas.” A Texas native, Casandra came to California as a retail manager with her favorite brand, BCBG, and eventually used her fashion, styling, and public relations background to launch her own PR agency. After spending 15 years consulting with international consumer brands at her agency, RCW Media Group, Casandra redirected her attention to starting her beautiful family. Her desire to maintain a strong work-life balance led to the first home she purchased in California being featured on House Hunters Renovation.

family also enjoys spending quality time at home hanging out in their backyard. At any given time, you will find the boys playing tennis, basketball, or skating on their newly renovated tennis court. The couple returned to Texas in 2019 for a “bohemian country-chic" wedding celebration at Rock ’N Dollar Ranch to highlight their country roots with a modern twist. The ceremony was held beneath a DIY altar backdrop featuring rustic branches and over 250 hydrangea flowers designed by artist Darrell Troppy. “We lit a unity candle during the ceremony,” says Casandra. “Since we’ve been dating for 22 years and already have three children, we wanted to include them in the candle lighting with us. We have not done things traditionally, and that is okay. We love with our whole hearts, and that is all that matters.” When not finding the perfect home for a client or producing the next great tennis star, the couple loves to visit National Parks with their children and explore all that Southern California has to offer. Gerald adds, “We look forward to adding many more memorable vacations to the list.” That clearly sums up this model family to a tee. n

SUNSET GT WESTLAKE VILLAGE EDITION ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Written and photographed by Steve Geldman In 2017, Beverly Hills luxury automotive dealer O’Gara Coach created Sunset GT, a Cars & Coffee originally at Sunset Plaza in West Hollywood and now located at the Petersen Automotive Museum. What separates this auto gathering from others is the branding of vehicle manufacturers allowed on the parking lot viewing area—only exotics need apply. O’Gara Coach Westlake has now introduced a similar Cars & Coffee: ‘Sunset GT ~ Westlake Village Edition’. On March 13th, with the effort of O’Gara’s Westlake Marketing Manager Corina Alvarez, well over 2,000 spectators arrived and nearly 600 vehicles were on display. Rolls Royce, Bentley, McLaren, Aston Martin, Maserati, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, and even supercar-builder Koenigsegg were present. Ventura County CHP arrived with their ‘Safety & Recruitment’ booth. They introduced their two new patrol vehicles, Dodge Charger and Chevrolet Tahoe, with special high-tech electronics onboard. O’Gara’s next event will be during the fourth quarter. For more information, visit sunsetgranturismo.com.

Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series

By Dustin Troyan Photography by Mercedes-Benz AMG The Black Series, wow! Well done, Mercedes Benz AMG. An instant icon and rumored to be fetching $300K over sticker (that lovely market adjustment), this is another one of those cars that if you can, go get it. As gasoline goes away and electric takes over, the manufacturers are pumping out some of the most amazing combustion sports cars the planet has ever seen, and the Black Series is truly incredible. The Black Series is the pinnacle of a model range whereby Mercedes-AMG pushes the car to the limits in every way. Horsepower, handling, aero, aesthetics--if you wanted the very best of the best in the Mercedes Benz offerings, this would be it. The orange and black pictured here was the “launch color,” and if you have seen it in person, it is beautiful, aggressive, and mean, all at the same time. AMG redesigned the GT’s 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8 for the Black Series, adopting a flat-plane crankshaft which produces an earth-shattering 720 hp and 590 pound-feet of torque. With a top speed of over 202 mph, there is not much that can keep up with it. Putting all the power to the rear tires, the AMG’s Speedshift seven-speed dual-clutch transmission will get you from standing to sixty in 3.1 seconds. The liberal use of carbon fiber lessens the overall weight of the Black Series and proves to bring you a work of art when you see it in person. Form and function as an expression of MercedesAMG ingenuity and vision are on display for all to see.

It is

truly a mechanical work of art that performs with the finest supercars in the world. With less than 400 for the U.S. market, all have been allocated. But if you really want one, bring a blank check. For more information: mercedes-amg.com. n

CALABASAS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT LAUNCHES MINA + PUP

____________________________________ ____________________________________ Natalie Kahn, a freshman at Calabasas High School, founded her dog accessories business, Mina + Pup, when she was just 13 years old and in 8th grade at A.E. Wright Middle School. After her 34-yearold uncle, best friend, and biggest supporter, Michael, passed away suddenly in 2020, Natalie wanted to keep his memory alive. Combining their names (MI)chael and (NA)talie and their shared love for animals, Mina + Pup was born with a mission to make a difference one purchase at a time—donating a portion of all proceeds to deserving animal rescue organizations and other select charities. Natalie does it all, from coming up with fresh, fun designs to building her website and Instagram to taking her own lifestyle and product photos. Her stylish, durable products—including harnesses, leashes, collars, bandanas, and wastebag holders in matching sets—are a big hit with dogs and dog parents alike. This charming, playful, 1-yearold terrier mix loves hiking, walking, and playing with other dogs. He is extremely energetic, intelligent, and good with other dogs but needs a home where he can learn to build trust with people.

This stunning, 3-year-old boxer mix weighs about 65 pounds and has so much love to give. She is housebroken, incredibly affectionate, loyal, and loving—but not a fan of other dogs or cats, so it’s best if she is the only princess in the home.

This adorable, 6-year-old, 17lb. spaniel mix is a little shy and skittish but is learning how to trust again. A patient, loving home with other dogs is best for him—particularly calmer dogs that help keep him balanced.

This happy shepherd mix is 1 year old and has been diagnosed with Cerebellar Hypoplasia, but he has no idea that he’s different! He walks over a mile a day and loves his celebrity status and all the attention he gets around town.

If the dogs pictured have been adopted, there are more dogs waiting for a good home. Foxy and the Hounds. foxyandthehounds.org foxyandthehounds@gmail.com

Beauty

Picks

A

couple of years ago, I wrote a book called Seven Days to Sexy (Amazon. com) and systematically listed all of the things one can do to look their absolute best in seven days, seven weeks, and seven months. In it are my favorite products and procedures—and attitudes—that lead you to becoming your sexiest self. Many of the recommendations in that book still stand, and there are new products that I would add to it, as the beauty and antiaging industry never sits still. In this article, I review some of my current beauty product picks, most of which I use myself! Lash conditioners. Why are lashes so captivating? Princesses have always been depicted with beautiful, long lashes to frame their big, bright eyes. Indeed, eyelash extensions have become extremely popular in Southern California, as well as lash conditioners and strip lashes. My current favorite lash conditioners are Latisse (Rx) and GrandeLASH. These prostaglandin-analog-containing products cause the lashes to grow longer, thicker, and darker. They are generally well-tolerated and have consistently predictable results, hence their popularity. Lip plumpers. Frequently during my workday at Bella Skin Institute, I use injectable fillers to plump lips. In between treatments or in lieu of having a lip-filler procedure, there are glosses that can temporarily plump up the lips. These glosses work by sealing in moisture at the same time as slightly perturbing the sensitive lip skin. Cinnamon or pepper (capsaicin) derivatives in the gloss cause an increase in lip color and mild, attractive swelling. My current favorite lip plumpers are GrandeLIPS and Lucy & Co., the latter being the spicier of the two. Brow enhancers. Brows are thick and shiny when we are young and tend to become sparse and pale over time. There are many things we can do to enhance the appearance of the brows with makeup. For a longer-term result, at our office we offer microblading and microshading (micropigmentation), brow tinting, and lamination. In addition to that, the same prostaglandin analogs that make lash hair grow also can enhance the brows. My current favorite products are GrandeBROW and Latisse. Both can be applied topically at night to encourage the brows to become longer, darker, and thicker.

Dental whiteners. Everyone loves a big, bright smile with white teeth. For a complete overhaul, visit your dentist! In between, however, I love to use Colgate Optic White toothpaste and Dr. George’s Dental White. Dental White is available on Amazon and comes with customizable trays. It is inexpensive and very effective for whitening and brightening teeth. Sunless tanning. The safest way to get a tan is not to get one. But you can look tan with sunless tanning products. The active ingredient in self tanners—the one that smells funny—is a three-carbon sugar called dihydroxyacetone. It was discovered when used as a sweetener for glucose-intolerant or diabetic diets and was noted to temporarily stain the skin. This is the only active ingredient approved for use as a sunless tanner, so the different formulas out there have different packaging and cosmetic colors, application methods, etc. to help them look less orange-y and smell better. My current favorite sunless-tanning products are Jergen’s Body Glow, Vita Liberata products, and St. Tropez. Having said that, whichever looks and feels best to you is fine. Anything to keep you from traditional UV-radiation-type tanning! Body bronzers. I tend to use body bronzers more often to avoid the orange-y look of self-tanners (see above). This results in a more natural-looking tan appearance to the skin, but the downside is that the tan color comes off a bit on clothing, and it is particularly noticeable on white clothing. My current favorite body bronzer is Westmore Beauty Body Coverage Perfector mixed with Too Faced body shimmer.

Hair supplements. Most of what happens with hair is an inside job, so supplementation with biotin, marine extract, plenty of protein in the diet, and silicon are important. Silicon supplements the outermost layer of the hair shaft at the time of growth, causing it to look shiny and healthy. Biosil is my current favorite silicon supplement. Sunscreens. This is a question I am asked daily: What is your favorite sunscreen? There are many options that are—with stringent FDA regulations— proven effective. I always say, the best sunscreen is the one you will use consistently. A little trial and error might be in order to find the perfect one for you. For daily wear, SPF 30 or higher is best. My current favorites are Elta MD 46 Clear, ISDIN 50 Eryfotona Actinica, Alastin 36 Hydratint Pro, and Colorescience Sunforgettable 50 Brush-on Shield for convenient reapplication. For days out in the sun, I love Anthelios 60 Melt-in Sunscreen Milk. Coppertone Sport Broad (non-aerosol) sunscreen is another favorite for the body. I have conspicuously left out my skincare favorites. There are some new proprietary formulations that I have been using lately that I am not at liberty to talk about. Yet, believe me, when the time is right, I will share with enthusiasm! At any rate, these are a few of my favorite beauty things. I hope some of these tried-and-true products find their way to your shelves and bring you nice results. Enjoy this beautiful summer, Babies! The statements in this article are for general informational purposes only and do not substitute for individual medical advice.

Nail conditioners. We all love healthylooking nails. In order to have healthy nails, a great supplement with biotin and marine extract is Viviscal Pro. Topically, for dry, brittle nails, my current pick is Elon Nail Matrix Moisturizer, available online. Hair protection. For shiny, healthy looking hair, we often recommend supplements, a prescription scalp solution, and a series of platelet rich plasma treatments (PRP). Products to protect the hair from sun and chlorine and hot tools are helpful in keeping hair shiny. My current favorite UV/chlorine protectant for hair is Kerastase Huile Sirene. For heat damage prevention, it is Chi 44 Iron Guard. Calabasas Style 67

Calabasas Mayor

Mary Sue Maurer

I

By Kaylie Carafelli n 2005, as a mother of three active young boys and with a busy career, Calabasas Mayor Mary Sue Maurer never considered running for elected office. But

her passion for the environment and social and educational issues, paired with hours of volunteer work in Calabasas, vaulted her to the Calabasas City Council. She is now the longest-serving elected woman in the history of Calabasas and was recently sworn in for her fourth term as mayor in December 2021. She also served as mayor in 2008, 2012, and 2016. Meanshile, the city just keeps evolving and improving. With the addition of new City Manager Kindon Meik, Maurer and her city council colleagues made room for Meik and the staff to reset the city to find ways to improve services and be better stewards of natural resources. “We are fortunate to have such a fine group of city staff that share our priorities,” says Maurer. She serves on the Clean Power Alliance, where she led the city to procure 100% clean energy citywide and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy Advisory Board that has set aside thousands of acres of open space. hroughout history, women have been known to make their jobs look effortless, whether they are running small, local companies or leading multinational corporations. We’d like to honor some of our

local businesswomen who treat their teams like family as they mentor staff and provide shining examples of fortitude and ingenuity. Most women already possess certain inherent traits, such as flexibility and emotional intelligence. They’ve also learned how to communicate well and check their egos at the door to really listen to other viewpoints. Born multitaskers, women clearly understand the importance of balancing work and family life while making each one of their relationships feel like number one. Women today thrive in boardrooms all over the world and right in our own backyard. On the following pages, we offer a glimpse into the hearts and minds of a few of our local female leaders. We hope you’ll be inspired as you discover how they use a storehouse of empathy, ideals, drive, and passion to succeed in the world of business.

Ask the

Pharmacist My allergies have been awful this spring, can anything help me?

M

ost people love it when winter ends and spring arrives. But for some, the changing of the seasons can mean troublesome spring allergies. In spring, most allergies have something to do

with pollen. This is the season when plants and flowers are blooming, and that means pollen is everywhere. After the heavy rains we had in December and the high winds in February and March, people with grass and tree allergies were hit particularly hard. If you have a pollen allergy, your body's immune system detects the pollen you breathe in and thinks it is a dangerous foreign substance. The immune system's reaction to pollen is what causes classic allergy symptoms like sneezing, red eyes, a runny nose, and an itchy throat. Reducing spring allergies from pollen is all about reducing your exposure to pollen. Keep the windows of your home closed to keep pollen from finding its way in on the breeze. While you're driving, resist the temptation to enjoy the warmer air and keep your windows rolled up. If you do spend time outdoors during the day, take a shower before you go to bed. That way, you won't spend the whole night coated in pollen. Fortunately for those that love spending time outdoors, there is help. There are over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamines that work great, but your body can get used to them, so it is good to switch them up after a couple of weeks or when they no longer work as well as they once did. There are also nasal sprays. These work best when used on a daily basis, but they take a couple of weeks to be effective. There are prescription antihistamines and nasal sprays as well. You may even need a course of steroids to reduce your most persistent allergy symptoms. However, just because a medication is sold over the counter, it does not mean it is safe for you, specifically, to take. That's why you should always talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medication—even an OTC allergy medication.

GETTING KIDS READY FOR

SUMMER!

L

By Lori Berezin et’s face it, kids are ready for summer 365 days of the year. Here are some tips to help make their transition from the school year even smoother.

1. Compile a summer reading list with plenty of interesting options they’ll enjoy. 2. Store the past year’s schoolwork away in a bin to make room for a new season of creativity. 3. Teach them good eating habits early by preparing healthy, hydrating snacks, such as watermelon, mangoes, pineapples, carrots, cucumber, celery, and frozen yogurt pops they can easily munch on the go. 4. Get them accustomed to wearing sunblock, sunglasses, and hats to protect their tender skin from harmful ultraviolet rays. 5. Buy them a special reusable, colorful cup for water and 100%-fruit juices. 6. Get to know your children’s friends’ parents to arrange playdates over the summer. 7. Relax their regular routine for an easygoing summer. 8. Plan a fun family vacation. 9. Sign your kids up for camp. There are plenty in our area, including those with a unique focus, like drama or art. 10. Keep them active with sports clubs, ranging from soccer to tennis and beyond. Whether this is the summer you finally go on your family’s dream vacation or simply share laughter and fun adventures closer to home, be sure to plan lots of activities together for a summer you and your family will long remember. n

CALABASAS GIRL SKIS TO THE TOP

hile most children her age were per fecting the art of walking, Stella Reitman was already on snow skis at the early age of 18 months. The now 10-year-old is currently ranked #1 in the country in the halfpipe discipline and #4 in slopestyle for girls in her age group and is also a member of

the Mammoth Freeski Team. Recently invited to compete in the USASA National Championships at Copper Mountain in Colorado, Stella will look to defend her top rankings. Born in Australia in 2011, Stella and her family moved to California six years ago— ultimately choosing Calabasas for its incredible education and proximity to the mountains. Since her parents, Jeremy and Taryn Reitman, and 6-year-old brother are equally passionate about the sport, you will find them heading to Mammoth Mountain every Friday afternoon for a full weekend of training or competitions. A model student at Ilan Ramon Day School in Agoura Hills, Stella remains at the top of her fourth-grade class—juggling her academic and ski career seamlessly with the support of her school and, of course, her family. “She’s always been an overachiever,” shares proud-father Jeremy. An inspiration at just 10 years old, Stella hopes to encourage more young girls to pick up skiing. n

PSHA AWARDS ASPIRING YOUNG MUSICIANS ____________________________________ ____________________________________ Photography by Jamie Pham Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) held its 35th Instrumental Competition on March 19th at Pasadena Conservatory of Music’s Barrett Hall. Nine finalists ages 14 to 19 demonstrated their musical talents competing for monetary prizes totaling $18,500. Since the competition was put on hold in 2020 due to the pandemic, the age level of competitors was changed to include high schoolaged students for the first time. Flutist Nikka Gershman-Pepper, 14, was awarded the Grand Prize for “exceptional talent and musicianship.” Tying for second place in the woodwinds category were two students from Calabasas High School—Zachary Piesner on bassoon and Max Kaminsky on clarinet. Piesner, 15, is currently the principal bassoonist with the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestra and also plays the violin and piano. Kaminski, 16, has won national and international competitions in both clarinet and piano and played with the Glendale, Los Angeles, and Colburn Youth Orchestras. MAKE SURE YOUR KIDS ARE

POOL SAFE H

By Lori Berezin ot summer days lend themselves per fectly to swimming in the nearest ocean or pool. According to California law, all swimming pools contain-

ing more than 18 inches of water must be surrounded by a fence at least five-feet high with a self-closing gate and self-latching device. While this helps ensure the safety of our children, how do we protect them once they’re inside these gates and ready to jump in the water? The most important thing is, of course, to teach them to swim as soon as possible. Infants as young as six months can benefit from swim lessons. Prepare your child beforehand by describing what will take place. You can even show them videos of similar classes. While you may want to incorporate water wings and other floatation devices, they’re no substitute for learning to swim. There are a few basic instructions that help keep kids safe, including no running, pushing, and swimming without supervision; no playing near the drain; and no diving in the shallow end. Drowning happens all too fast with young kids. Be sure to always keep an eye on them when they’re near the water or not. Rotate an adult or two to be “water watchers” during parties. Remove any toys from the pool after swim time that may be enticing to those who haven’t yet mastered how to swim. Keep your pool well-maintained, clean from bacteria, and covered when not in use. Other than that, simply slather your kids in waterproof sunscreen to safely swim the day away. n

ENTERTAINING By Gayle Barnes

It might be hard to believe, but summer is right around the corner. Are you ready for outdoor entertaining? Around here, your outside areas become an extension of your home, making it easy to throw together an impromptu get-together.

Outdoors

Pretty Cocktails Everybody loves a good cocktail, and what better way to add some flair than with an exciting garnish? Use a classic garnish, like a lemon or lime wedge, or opt for a more creative, whimsical option, like fashioning a banana into a dolphin.

Outdoor Appetizers Set the ambience with easy summer appetizers to compliment the cocktail hour. Put out a beautiful charcuterie board. Use a broad assortment of cured meats, hard and soft cheeses, bread or crackers, fruit, jams, nuts, and caperberries.

Outdoor Seating Outdoor furniture helps transform your backyard into the ultimate summer sanctuary. Basket chairs create a fun vibe, or you can style with a rattan couch with comfy cushions for a more sophisticated look. Add a pop of color with accent pillows.

Breakfast Outdoors! No summer is complete without an al fresco meal, so why not make it breakfast? When you start your day with a meal outside, it feels like you’re on vacation. Bring your phone if you must, but a book is a better option.

EXQUISITE SURFACE TRENDS FROM

FACTOR HD New trends emerge in home design each year. In 2022, retro and vintage textures have risen to the forefront according to the experienced designers at Factor HD. From brilliant whites to bright blues, tile designers and manufacturers are becoming more adventurous with colors, creating vivid, wild hues. T imeless neutral tones and grays are expected to remain on-trend for years to come. Other essentials in floors and sur faces, such as handmade porcelain mosaic tiles, remain in style, adding a splash of color and texture to more natural, subtle shades. In addition to new colors, the tile industry has also seen a dramatic demand for large-format porcelain tile and porcelain slab. From backdrops to shower walls, large-format tile has taken the industry by storm, capturing the look and feel of marble and stone with veins in the porcelain that mimic a more expensive material at a lower cost. Engineered wood flooring and luxury vinyl have transitioned to wider, longer planks—a huge benefit for new designs. Available in a range of natural shades—from light beige and rustic gray to walnut and cider brown, the flooring matches the look of natural wood with less upkeep. Refinishing old-style parquet floors has also gained in popularity. By simply applying a distressed wash, a floor gets a unique, updated look. A

dining and lounge options with plush cushions for designer comfort. Family-owned Pacific Patio Furniture first opened its doors in 2013. Nine years later, it’s still growing strong. Outdoor living spaces are being utilized as additional spaces with people investing in their outdoor areas even more. “Living in Southern California, the weather allows for nearly year-round outdoor entertainment, with extended room outdoors,” notes owner Theresa Elkins. “We felt a need to serve our community and provide luxury outdoor furniture and accessories at competitive prices.” The company continues to grow by seeking out the newest design trends. This year, maintenance-free furniture is gaining popularity, as seen in its timeless POLYWOOD ® Latitude collection. As chic as it is classic, the exceptional craftsmanship boasts an uncompromised aesthetic, crisp angles, and clean lines–with no annual maintenance required. Paired with plush Sunbrella cushions, the set combines comfort with aesthetic appeal. Another great low-maintenance option is the Seattle Collection, which features the rustic look of antique, grey-teak patio seating. Currently available in three frame finishes—rustic teak, salvaged lumber, and reclaimed barnwood—the frame is made of thick-gauge aluminum that’s powder coated to look and feel like wood. You can easily clean the sur face with a garden hose, soft cloth, and mild soapy water. If you’d prefer to “mix and match,” that’s fine, too. Pacific Patio believes there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to your backyard and will gladly customize the layout to fit your particular taste and budget. “We enjoy spending time with our customers to better understand their needs,” shares Elkins. The desire for low-maintenance patio furniture, for example, arises frequently. Customers want their outdoor space to be a breeze. They’d rather spend less time on maintenance and more time doing what they love, such as barbecues and lounging by the pool with family and friends. Fortunately, Pacific Patio offers plenty of styles that are both chic and easy to maintain. Customer service remains a top priority at Pacific Patio. The onsite sales staff can help you discover your ideal look. First, decide whether you want a modern, transitional, or traditional style. Next, consider the size of your backyard. Then, think about frame color and fabric. When you’re ready to shop for the per fect outdoor furniture, visit Pacific Patio’s Agoura showroom for expert design services and a stress-free experience. n

INSPIRED CLOSETS

CREATES SPACE FOR EVERYTHING Inspired Closets CEO Jim Delany discovered his passion for home design at a young age and found a creative home at Inspired Closets’ Warner Center showroom, where he and his staff help bring their clients’ dreams to life through custom organization solutions. “One of the greatest things about the L.A. area is its architectural variety,” says Delany. “We love to match our designs to the style of a home, whether Mediterranean or Craftsman.” They do this and make it easy for clients to fall in love with their new closets by taking care of all the details from a free in-home or virtual consultation to a finished installation. They even transform garage cabinetry, pantries, laundry rooms, home offices, entryways, and entertainment centers to make each residence into the best that it can be. The team also keeps up with the latest trends—from sliding garage doors to Murphy beds. Cabinetry with sliding doors enables customers to park their cars in the garage and still have plenty of room for shelving. The Murphy wall bed has also made a timely comeback. With the continued popularity of remote work, the bed can help convert that extra bedroom into both an office and guest room. Customers complete the picture by combining the proper lighting with Inspired Closets’ custom home organization to create a welcoming ambiance any time of day. n

WHAT OUR Modern Classic Minimalist Rustic

I

HOMES SAY ABOUT US

By Lori Berezin n 1943, Winston Churchill noted, "We shape our buildings, and afterwards, our buildings shape us.” While he was referring to urban environments, the connection between our homes and happiness remains true to this day. They also reveal a great deal about our sensibilities and sense of style.

Architecture and personality Do you love modern homes with straight lines or do craftsman or Victorian-style homes make your heart sing? A passion for clean lines may indicate a straightforward individual who likes to quickly come to the point. Curvy lines, on the other hand, show a bit more imagination and whimsy. Minimalist designs with just a couple of colors and mostly white, grey, and black tones may be popular with more practical types that hate to waste anything, while traditional styles designate a respect for history and somewhat conservative nature when it comes to home and family.

170

Calabasas Style

Look inside The interior of your home also says a lot about the real you. Your home is your castle, which you can design any way you choose (as long as your family agrees). You may prefer a minimalist style where less is truly more. This works well for methodical, efficient thinkers. A more classical interior, incorporating plenty of neutral tones and high-quality wood and upholstered furniture, delights the poised, balanced side of your nature. Someone who prefers a clutter-free home full of sleekly crafted furniture relishes organization with everything in its proper place, while those with rooms full of memorabilia revel in the past. Ranch-style homes are perfect for people who prefer things out in the open and don’t want to spend time climbing up and down to get what they want. No secret entryways or rooms for these folks. What you see is what you get. They tend to be outgoing and friendly and prefer lots of space. Smaller bungalow-style dwellings indicate a love for keeping everything and everyone close to hearth and home.

What’s on your walls? What you showcase in your home, especially the common areas, represents what you’re willing to disclose about yourself. A white wall without any pictures or art says very little except that you prefer silence to a lot of noise and distraction or you aren’t quite ready to reveal the inner you. Lots of paintings with bold colors show someone with plenty of passion and perhaps an artistic temperament. Paintings from any of the masters represent classical tastes. If the art is original, it also indicates financial security. The subjects represented in any of your artwork or photography signify even more.

Finishing touches Those possessing a love of nature enjoy plenty of plants and wood furniture to bring the outside world in. Beach lovers display trinkets from the sea, such as shells, stones, and mermaid statues. Both types enjoy plenty of windows to let natural light shine through. The romantic look and feel of Mediterranean-style homes also fit perfectly into SoCal’s sunny climate and lifestyle. Whatever designs you choose, think of your home as a blank canvas waiting for you to showcase your true colors. n

you discover its many charms, from windswept beaches to eclectic shops, you’ll keep coming back for more. In the fall, you’ll notice plenty of scarecrows based on popular characters, from Popeye to Dorothy, during the town’s month-long October Scarecrow Festival. You’ll also find plenty of places to settle down for the night on Moonstone Beach Drive, named for the opalescent moonstones scattered along the sand. Be sure to grab a place in line for dinner at the ever-popular Sea Chest restaurant. Bring cash—that’s all they’ll take for their delectable fresh fish and other seafood. Afterwards, stroll along the wooden boardwalk to catch another brilliant Cambria sunset. Later, visit Cambria Pines Lodge for live music nightly. Set amidst fragrant pines, it’s another great option for meals and lodging. Breathe in cool ocean breezes hiking through Fiscalini Ranch Preserve, overlooking colorful wildflowers and churning waves. Indulge in a little retail therapy in the east and west village and enjoy lunch or dinner at Las Combritas or Linn’s, both long-time favorites. Reward your sweet tooth with some of Linn’s homegrown olallieberry pie. You’ll dream about its heavenly taste as your drift off to dreamland, looking forward to another delicious Cambria day. n
