MY FAVORITE SPACE LAURA KLAPPER: HER FAVORITE: THE WINE CELLAR
Photography by Gia Garganese
Laura’s favorite space is their wine cellar. They keep about 2,500 bottles of wine on hand so that no one ever goes thirsty. The collection is pretty deep in Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Barolo, some going all the way back to the 1940s. The windowless space is painted a deep crimson to enhance the “cave-like” feel, while dimmable overhead lights and LEDs strung throughout the racks provide some visual drama. Although the temperature is kept at a chilly 52 degrees, their dinner guests usually end up spending time in the cellar. “Sometimes we can’t get them out — especially during those hot Calabasas summers when no place else in our house ever feels quite cool enough.”
MARTY KLAPPER: HIS FAVORITE: THE MUSIC ROOM Marty’s favorite space is the music room. “It’s definitely a personal space for me to spend some quality alone-time with my music. If I’ve had an extra glass of wine (or more likely two), I might be persuaded to invite some guests in for an impromptu recital. Also, any musicians who wander into the house are always welcome to play.” It’s home to a high-quality stereo system, about 5,000 recordings, about 35 electric guitars, a dozen or so acoustic guitars, an archtop guitar, three amplifiers, assorted recording and performance equipment, and a few images of Fleetwood Mac. What more could anyone ask for? Photography by Gia Garganese
