Ahupua’a Magistrate’s Land Court Caitlin Young I ADS 5 I Summer 2022 I Prof. Genevieve Baudoin The Ahupua’a Magistrate’s Land Court in Anahola, Kauai, Hawaii will provide space for the judicial functions of the court and gathering space for the community. The aim of this design is to reconnect the locals with the natural landscape and create space that fosters connection through the land court and public porch. The proposal also carefully considers sustainability and self-sufficiency. The butterfly roof collects water in a central trough creating a water feature and allowing for storage in an underground cistern. Solar panels are also integrated into the railings to utilize energy from the sun. A bioswale collects and filters runoff using native landscaping. Sliding walls are used to allow for ventilation through the space. These features work in tandem to create a peaceful overlook and gathering space.
