Treatment Documentary series of different styles and approaches that present the life stories of the masters of Living Human Treasures. The initial cut, currently in production phase, comprehends the living treasures of the state of Pernambuco. In Brazil, four states have implemented the policy of recognition and valuation of the masters of local arts: Pernambuco, Alagoas, Paraiba and Ceara. We have developed our proposal based on this variation of scenario and ample diversification of cultural expressions. In each show, three documentaries of different durations in alignment with the preceding Research and Script make public the life and work processes of each master. Olaria Cultural leverages artistic languages from various parts of the world. In all films the protagonists of each story will be interviewed and asked about the meaning of the title of Living Human Treasure in their lives, and whenever possible archive images will be used.

1) LIVING TREASURES WITH GUARANTEED FUNDING: Synopsis of Scripts Reginaldo Alves Ferreira (Camar達o) We follow the visit of the accordion player to his home town Brejo da Madre de Deus in the countryside of Pernambuco. We cover through an interview the first contact that the boy Camar達o had with the button accordion through his father, the accordion player Antonio Ferreira. We visit places and people that were part of his life until the beginning of his adolescence. We follow two performances of Camar達o on stages throughout the countryside. We will use images of his personal collection alongside important artists such as Luiz Gonzaga, Hermeto Pascoal and Sivuca to illustrate different passages of his

artistic path and importance for the “forró” from Pernambuco state. Camarão teaches at home, and we recorded these classes and his method, which is based on much practice. We used the esthetics of the St John (“São João”) festivities such as fireworks and bonfires to punctuate the documentary, as these elements are directly associated with the “forró” musical style. Fernando Spencer In a “making-of language” we follow the recording of the new short film of master Fernando Spencer, “Nossos Ursos Camaradas”. We will use selected images of his extensive filmography to tell part of the history of Pernambuco state. We will voice over parts of the interview conducted with Fernando Spencer. We recorded a walk through the neighborhood where he lives (Poço da Panela), which reveals some of his personal characteristics (calm, tranquil and accommodating). In this walk we will address as well the part of his life as a film critic, exploring his active participation in the movement of Super8 film cycle in Pernambuco. “Clube de Alegoria e Crítica o Homem da Meia-Noite” (Allegory and Critic Club the Midnight Man) The Allegory and Critic Club the Midnight Man was formed during Carnival of 1931, as a dissident movement of participants of the carnival group Cariri de Olinda. To beat Cariri, which had been proudly opening Carnival festivities in Olinda since the 19th century, the Midnight Man parade went to the streets in the first minute after midnight of the first day of Carnival (“Momo” Sunday), before its new rival. This and other stories are told here by the executive participants of the group, such as the story around the group’s name being inspired by the hero of an adventure series shown at the time at Cinema do Carmo, in Olinda: a detective that came out of clocks to arrest criminals. The documentary was recorded during the heat of Carnival festivities, from its preparation, which is composed by many rituals, until the actual parade of the Club. The Midnight Man maintains the tradition to have the parade follow the exact same route, through the streets of Cidade Alta, in Olinda. We did the route both before Carnival on the empty streets as well as during the party,

capturing the audio in direct sound, to register people’s reaction. We’ll use black and white images of Carnival in Olinda. José Soares da Silva (Dila) Dila has illustrated a numerous amount of folder covers and albums through polychromatic technique, and has illustrated multiple beverage and medicine seals, books, and is also a stamp producer. Dila is one of the few popular poets who utilize gum and linoleum, in addition to wood, to create woodcuts with shaving blades. We will discuss this characteristic that distinguishes him among other woodcutters. The stories and fantasies of the woodcutter and cordel poet Dila lead him to state he is son of a Dutch Euclides Oliveira Figueiredo, who was the owner of 112 sugar factories, who used 17 names to separate his families, had 63 women, 130 sons and 127 daughters and that left all of this registered in a catalog. Among his brothers, are Lampião, Padre Cícero e Miguel Arraes. These and other stories will be done in animation with voice over from Dila and scenes of him crafting a woodcut in his atelier.

Margarida Pereira de Alcântara (Índia Morena) Margarida Pereira de Alcântara, 63 years old, is known as Índia Morena. She is a circus artist, and contributed much to the art of circus in Pernambuco. We interviewed Índia in the edge of her 53 years of career and we followed through memories of her poor childhood in Recife and the process of becoming an itinerant star shining under different tents. We gave special attention to the fact that she was a contortionist, and we reproduced this performance with an invited actress and extra esthetic care. We used photographs of her family albums, which the artist keeps in her modest house. Maracatu Leão Coroado With 140 years of black resistance, and as one of the few groups that maintain alive the tradition and religiousness of Maracatu in the state of Pernambuco, the Nação Leão Coroado group considers the official date of its creation as December 8th of 1863. The December 8th date has great meaning for its participants. It is the day it’s celebrated the festivities of “Nossa Senhora da Conceição” and “Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos”, for the catholics, and Iemanjá day, for the African “nagô” cult. We will record this celebration from its preparation until the activities of the festivities. We will use archive material. Statements from main participants and Maracatu masters will be taken, so that we can progressively reveal the mysticism and live cults that surround the House. The color of the percussion group that uses 25 different types of artisanal drums are red and white, and we’ll use this color composition whenever possible to build the esthetics of this documentary. We will focus on the religious traditions and the magical relationships among different elements of the parade. We will record this with a strictly documental approach, meaning we will not ask for special or exclusive performances. José Francisco Borges (Jota Borges) We will draw an audio picture with vocal polyphony to illustrate the figures of woodcutter and cordelist Jota Borges that are exposed in his atelier. Through maneuvering and reading the fantastic stories, Jota started to appreciate the

literary style of the poets whose cordel material he sold. His woodcuts and drawings are composed by fantastic beings as well as everyday scenes. Jota Borges have exhibited his work in countries such as USA, Switzerland, Germany, Mexico, Venezuela, etc. We will interview him to know more about these and other phases of his life. In his atelier, in the BR-232 road, Jota keeps receiving visits from buses filled with students and tourists, and we will record one of these visits. To illustrate the intimate side of Jota, we’ll also record in his country house the celebration of St John’s festivities, the one he appreciates the most among the northeastern region festivities. Maria Madalena Correia do Nascimento (Lia de Itamaracá) Lia, a smiley and party lover “Cirandeira”. Due to her limited and almost monochordic vocabulary, we chose to use her music and “Cirandas” to illustrate her universe. We selected her husband, the master and composer Toinho that follows her, as the narrator of this story. We shot scenes of the waters and seas of the Itamaracá. The predominance of the colors blue and white tend to link the image of Lia with that of the African goddess Yemanja. We will use equipments that cause the sensation of movement, such as grua, steadycam. We followed her, with direct sound, in one of the many preparation moments that precedes her performances, which occur in her cultural space know as the “Cultural Center Star of Lia”, at Praia de Jaguaribe - Itamaracá.

Dona Selma do Coco We worked with a child actress who played Dona Selma as a child, playing on the hills and beautifully entrenched landscapes of the Cidade Alta de Olinda. This fictional reconstruction poetically deploys the encounter of Dona Selma with the music, as she discovered her artistic talents as she worked selling typical Brazilian food and drinks in the streets of Olinda, as a way to attract customers and catch the attention of tourists. Statements from Dona Selma, recorded in interviews, are voiced over images of her performances. We explore her best known songs, amongst them “A Rolinha”, present in the record “Minha Historia”. At the end of the documentary, we promoted the encounter of the child actress with Dona Selma. The two meet in one of the hills in Olinda and the child actress becomes the shadow of Dona Selma projected on the ground. Dona Selma continues her walk uphill. Manuel Eudócio Like the other boys in the countryside, Manuel Eudócio used to play with clay. He would make animals – horses, cows, etc. This playful activity was the beginning of his career as a “bonequeiro” (“doll maker”), which made him an established artist from Alto do Moura, in the countryside of Pernambuco. We follow the process of burning the pieces in a rustic wood based oven, and the subsequent decoration of the pieces, with strong and shiny colors. His work is comprehended of multiple types and scenes of the everyday life in Pernambuco. In interview with the artist, we discovered what the audience will notice – that Manuel Eudócio is actually a chronic writer of his time.

Olaria Cultural is a series about the Living Human Treasures. Living Human Treasures embody the traditional wisdom and are genuine holders of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The system of Living Human Treasures was developed by UNESCO and inspired by the Japanese legislation. The revitalization of traditional culture, in times of globalization, is the way to preserve local specificities, cultural diversity and local identities. The non-physical nature of the intangible heritage makes it vulnerable in the globalized world. Hence, its preservation, promotion and revitalization are urgent. One way to do this is to guarantee that those who resist by producing intangible cultural heritage may continue to acquire knowledge and tools and are enabled to share them with future generations. With this purpose, the system of Living Human Treasures identifies and officially recognizes those that represent the intangible cultural heritage through mechanisms that guarantee transmission to future generations. The recommendation is that the states take the legislative measures in compliance with the constitutional practice of each country. These policies are being developed in the contemporary world to ensure the registration of a technology of enchantment that may be lost at any time. In Brazil, measures have been taken by four pioneer states in the northeast region: Pernambuco, Alagoas, ParaĂ­ba e CearĂĄ. The government of these states have jointly made official over 70 Living Human Treasures. Anegra Filmes is currently developing a documentary series for TV aimed at the audiovisual documentation of this heritage and its diffusion. With this objective, a special series of thirty three documentaries will be produced, and will be combined into a series of eleven programs; each one of the eleven 26 minutes programs will have three documentaries, that will draw poetical descriptions of the artists, in order to comprehend their creative, re-creation and transmission processes. The documentaries will also show the socioeconomic profile, lifestyle, values, world views, memories, social and symbolic relationships, practices, knowledge, and knowledge transmission of these special artists and groups of artists.

Our purpose is to contribute to the valuation and promotion of the knowledge and experience of this intangible heritage. The target audience for the TV documentary series Olaria Cultural is formed by all social classes, ages, genres, beliefs and nationalities. The program will present characters whose whole lives are dedicated to the arts, and whose journeys are very peculiar, forming a watercolor of cultural diversity. Because this project addresses symbols, the imaginary, the memories, the ways of life and the forms of expression, it involves all kinds of public. Anegra Filmes is currently in production phase of the first 15 documentaries, covering the Living Human Treasures from the state of Pernambuco, through the grant of R$167,473.90 (U$ 88,144.16) from the Culture Secretary of the State of Pernambuco. The estimated cost for the final production is R$733,973.90 (U$ 386,302.05). We intend to fund this project through grants from Brazilian corporations and the Governments of the states of Alagoas, Paraiba and Ceara. We intend to also explore the possibility of establishing partnerships with TV channels and international distributors as co-producers.

- Producer and one of the directors of the TV Series Olaria Cultural, Marcia Mansur is developing her master’s degree dissertation in Anthropology, about the system of the Living Human Treasures in Pernambuco, supported by the Living Heritage Law. The research is being developed since March 2008 and will be finalized by March 2010. The idea is for the dissertation to become a published book, which will include photographs and biographies of the Living Heritages, with a DVD insert. - The Secretary of Culture of the State of Pernambuco is supporting the production of 1,000 DVDs that will contain all the programs of the Olaria Cultural – Pernambuco Stage. These DVDs will be distributed at no cost to the public schools of the state. The objective is to have a national level production to be distributed to all Brazilian states, which would include the stages Alagoas, Paraiba and Ceara, once the TV cycle exhibition is completed. - We intend to promote curatorial support and development of an itinerant exhibition of the life and work of the Living Heritage of Pernambuco. Given the diversity of artistic language of the masters and groups, the exhibition would present music, pottery, performance, painting, woodcut, circus, popular festivities and religious festivities, in a multimedia journey through photographs and documentaries. Arts education activities are also foreseen with teenagers and children.

MARCIA MANSUR BIOGRAPHY MARCIA MANSUR has an undergraduate degree in Social Sciences from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and is Master’s degree candidate in Anthropology from the Federal University of Pernambuco. She is producer, researcher and documentary director. She focuses mainly in the areas of popular culture, Brazilian music, research, intangible heritage and public cultural policies. SCHEDULE FOR EXECUTION OF THE OLARIA CULTURAL PROJECT Stage Pernambuco (under development) With production budget granted by the Secretary of Culture of the State of Pernambuco, the Olaria Cultural project has already shot ten documentaries and has production agenda developed for five additional documentaries during the second half of 2009. The first five shows of the series will be finalized in January 2010, and the exhibition in the local open TV channel has already been agreed and signed for 2010. The current objective is to fundraise for the subsequent stages, involving the Living Human Treasures of the Brazilian states of Alagoas, Paraiba and Ceara.
