FROM THE DUGOUT Welcome to Stradbrook for our third game in the 2019 SSE Airtricity League First Division versus Longford Town. I extend a warm welcome to the management, players, supporters and Board of Longford Town and in particular to Kevin Knight and Jack Menton who were stalwarts for Cabinteely FC for many years.

I extend my sympathy and that of the club to Longford Town Chairman, Jim Hanley, on his recent bereavement.

Although the result of the opening game versus Bray Wanderers was disappointing, I saw enough in that game to feel that we could mix it with the best in the First Division. This was borne out by the performance and our result in Tolka Park last Friday night. Adding in the victory away to Drogheda United in the First Round of the 2019 EA Sports Cup on Monday night then we can look back on the past week or so with great positivity.

We’ve done well with two good wins but we face Longford Town tonight and Drogheda United next Friday and the reality is that these are two more tough games. If we can pick up another three points tonight, we can get in very early into the shake-up of things in the Division.

It’s a results business in this game and it’s always important to get results, but ultimately in a club like Cabinteely, it’s good to have the right team spirit too. With limited resources, we have done wonderfully well but we won’t be getting carried away with anything.

We must commend the work being done by all the staff here because without them, these results would not have happened.

We also have to commend the players for

their performances against top opposition, especially those who had limited game time up to now.

Competition is now fierce for every position on the pitch. This will result in players getting stronger and stronger, which augurs well for the future.

As this is International Women’s Day I would like to acknowledge the contribution of women at Cabinteely FC. Our club would not function without volunteers and great credit should be given to our women volunteers.

They should be given all the credit in the world, but not just today – every day. Our ladies and girls football teams continue to flourish on the pitch too.

For those who are mentioned elsewhere in the Match Programme tonight – well done.

For those who haven’t been mentioned, and we possibly forgot in the past, a sincere well done too.

LONGFORD TOWN F.C.

Table Position: 3rd.

Recent form: D - W. History in short: Founded in 1924, Longford Town only joined the league of Ireland in 1984 following election after establishing themselves as a rather successful junior club which won plenty of major honours. Town’s dominance in the junior game can be seen with their stranglehold on the FAI Intermediate Cup which they won five times over 32 years.

Upon the club’s appointment into the League of Ireland, Longford endured a rather tumultuous upbringing with poor crowds and a lack of general interest around the club.

However this was all to soon change after the appointment of current Republic of Ireland U21 boss, Stephen Kenny, to the manager’s hot seat at the club. Kenny revitalised the club’s fortunes and soon saw them get promoted to the Premier Division.

The Tallaght native soon catapulted the small provincial club to the UEFA Cup before reaching a FAI Cup final in 2001. Kenny laid the groundwork for future success as Alan Matthews led the club to back to back FAI Cup wins in 2003 and 04’ with a League Cup crown to the club’s name as well in 2004.

This was a golden period in the club’s history, but the dream was to soon end with relegation to the First Division in 2007. It took the club eight years to get back up to the Premier before coming back down in 2016 where the Strokestown Road outfit have stayed since.

Player to Watch: Aodh Dervin: After impressing during 2018 with his hometown club, big things are expected of Aodh Dervin in 2019. A combative and energetic midfielder, the 19-year-old has come through the ranks at the City Calling Stadium and looks set to excite the Longford Town faithful once more.

CABO'S WOMEN IN FOCUS International Women's Day - 8th March 2019 Karen Hayden: Karen began volunteering in Cabinteely FC when her son’s age group were tasked with running the Mini World Cup over ten years ago. She has excelled in her roles in catering, team management and as the MGL League Secretary. While no longer officially involved in her daughter’s u14 premier football team she can still be heard encouraging the players from the side line in hail, rain or snow.

Today is International Women’s Day and to celebrate this we would like to recognise some of the female staff and volunteers who have toiled away selflessly down through the years and who have been to the forefront in making Cabinteely FC the club it is today. Many women have either worked or volunteered in club during its 52-year existence and the group below is representative of those who have made a huge contribution to Cabinteely Football Club in that time.

Caroline Traynor: Caroline put her hand up to volunteer in the Mini World Cup over ten years ago and has been selflessly giving up her time ever since. She has managed her son’s football teams when nobody else stepped forward. She is still the reigning “queen of catering” for both the Mini World Cup and at the First Team’s games in Stradbrook. Caroline is a highly valued volunteer with a can-do attitude.

All we can say is . . . Thank You! Geralyn Harnett has worked for over ten years in the Cabinteely FC’s Head Office in Kilbogget Park and has been the back bone and heart of Cabinteely in that time. Geralyn keeps the club running smoothly and always goes above and beyond her role. She was deservedly voted Club Person of the Year in 2017.

Liz Smith Carry: Liz comes from a family of Cabinteely supporters and has recently been persuaded to part with even more of her time. She played an active role in organising the Cabinteely FC’s 50th anniversary Gala Dinner Dance two years ago.

Liz can be seen down in Stradbrook regularly helping in the shop and feeding the hungry First Team Players and management team post-match.

Anita Knight: Football is in Anita’s blood.

She played football at a very competitive level until she became a mother to five talented athletes, four football players, all of whom have or are playing for Cabinteely FC, and a talented Irish dancing champion. She is the Age Group Coordinator for the U-11’s and looks after five teams. Anita puts her heart and soul into the club. Quietly working away in the background never looking for recognition or praise. A true team player.

Gill Waters: Gill is a parent from the newly launched U12’s academy who continually puts her hand up to help out in the club. Gill’s wealth of experience in fundraising has been a huge benefit to the club. She has served on Cabinteely’s Board of Management and is a regular volunteer at the Mini World Cup and at the First Team’s home matches in Stradbrook.

Jackie McBride: Jackie has been volunteering for many years in the club, especially during the Mini World Cup where she runs the Tea/coffee shop and is always ready to step up at short notice.

Laura Doyle: Laura assists in managing the very successful U14 premier boys’ team.

She can also be found managing a team and sometimes two at the annual Mini World Cup. Laura is also a regular supporter of the First Team games in Stradbrook. A great example and role model for the many girls in the club.

Laura Ellard: Laura is the Manager of our DWSL Senior Ladies Team and is embarking on her second year in charge of this highly successful team, which has already amassed quite a lot of silverware. Laura puts in a huge amount of work in keeping this team on the road.

Olwen Lewins: Olwen first volunteered in the club at the annual Mini World Cup over ten years ago. Like many others she has caught the Cabo bug. Olwen can be regularly seen supporting Cabinteely FC teams at all levels and in all venues. She has recently taken up a more intensive role on administration and events support within the club.

Kirsty O’Neill: Kirsty is the Age Group Co Ordinator for the U10’s. She ensures the smooth running of the six teams and ensures the managers are supported in their roles and that they are kept up to date with club communications and events. Kirsty can also be seen volunteering at the annual Mini World Cup and is a regular supporter of the many Cabinteely social events.

Isabelle Connolly: Isabelle has been an active member of Cabinteely FC for the last number of years. She has managed teams in the junior club and is currently part of the Management Team with U17’s National League team. Her enthusiasm and positivity are some of her many positive attributes.

Isabelle also volunteers at the First Team’s home games in Stradbrook.

CABO SQUAD – Rob Manley / Alex Aspil ROB MANLEY A week can be a long time in politics. So, it’s a long time in football too.

Fortunes change quickly. Rob Manley is testament to that.

His Cabinteely debut at Stradbrook against Bray Wanderers last month saw the striker penalised when many thought he was to be awarded a penalty. Moments later at the other end, the Seagulls got a spot-kick.

Fast forward seven days and Manley wins the penalty to draw Cabinteely level against Shelbourne at Tolka Park before claiming his first goal for his new club in a 3-2 triumph.

“I was happy. Both with the win and to score. I hadn’t scored since actually scoring against Cabinteely (for Bohs) in the EA Sports Cup (March 2018)” explained the 21-year-old.

“I’m just looking to getting as many goals as possible under my belt. At Drogheda and Bohs, I didn’t get much game time at all. It’s about getting match practise; getting match fit and hopefully scoring goals.”

Combining Airtricity League First Division and college football is also a juggling act for the attacker who is studying at the TU Dublin Blanchardstown Campus.

“There are a lot of lads who play League of Ireland football in every college. The standard is high. A lot of lads are combining their studies with football. They all still want to win.

It’s very competitive. Nearly every college team has one of two players who are with League of Ireland clubs.”

Having opened his account, the attacker is looking to help make Stradbrook a fortress this season and surprise opposing clubs along the way.

“We have a strong side this year. Some teams might underestimate how good we are.

I think we will challenge every team we face.

We’ve a good balance to the side.”

Tonight’s encounter at Stradbrook could be interesting in the Manley household as Rob could come up against his brother Joe who plays for Longford.

ALEX ASPIL Just over a month after his 18th birthday, Alex Aspil made his full Cabinteely FC senior debut in arguably a man of the match display against Shelbourne last week.

Not looking out of place at Tolka Park, the young midfielder’s career had come a full 360 degrees.

Having lined out for Cabinteely’s U17’s back in 2016, a move to St. Patrick’s Athletic U17's came about in 2017.

Yet a return to the Southside beckoned in the 2018 mid-season summer break.

Having been unused substitute back

in September 2018 in the 4-1 loss away to Longford Town at the City Calling Stadium, the teenager made his competitive debut a week later at Stradbrook against Shelbourne by coming off the bench in the 66th minute.

Another late cameo away to Finn Harps in the last match of the campaign in Donegal followed.

It was a similar case against Bray Wanderers last month at Stradbrook. But Aspil took his chance whole heartily last week in Drumcondra.

An injury-time lung bursting run on a counter attack epitomised his all-action display which included a clever feint and delightful flick past an opponent after shielding the back four through-out the contest.

“For myself, I was very happy to get my full first debut. And a full 90 minutes in. It was smashing performance to win 3-2” declared

the teenager who will sit his Leaving Certificate in June this year.

“When the chance comes to play, you have to take it. That’s what Pat (Devlin), Eddie (Gormley) and Graham (O’Hanlon) have always told us. If you get in, you have to play well to stay in.”

Aspil added “We have to build on each result. We have to get the best results we can, keep picking points. Hopefully, we’ll have a good season.”

St. John Ambulance Cabinteely

St. John Ambulance Cabinteely is one of the most active Divisions in Dublin with a current membership of almost 100. Our volunteer members vary from students to nurses to plumbers to carers when they are not staffing local events such as Seapoint Rugby Blitz/Cabinteely Ceili/DLR 10 kms run or venues such as Croke Park/Aviva Stadium or RDS.
