DUGOUT VIEW WITH PAT DEVLIN 3 Welcome to Stradbrook for what is a very busy weekend for Cabinteely’s First Team as on Friday we face Shamrock Rovers II in our third game in the 2020 SSE Airtricity League First Division and then on Sunday we entertain Crumlin United in the EA Sports Cup First Round.

We’ve had to endure very severe weather conditions over the last two weekends so hopefully this weekend will bring a welcome respite for players, Management Teams, Match Officials and Supporters alike.

I extend a warm welcome to Manager, Aidan Price and all those involved in Shamrock Rovers II to Stradbrook for Friday’s League game. I have always enjoyed my matches against Shamrock Rovers teams during my time in the League of Ireland and I’m hoping for more of the same this Friday.

I welcome too Martin Loughran and all involved with Crumlin United for Sunday’s EA Sports Cup First Round. Both Cabo and Crumlin have a lot in common, not least the fact that both clubs were formed in 1967 and have survived in a difficult football environment since then.

I am delighted with the way we have started the 2020 SSE Airtricity League season with two wins in very difficult weather conditions.

Although we were short

a couple of players for those opening two games all the players who were involved stepped up to the mark and gave a great account of themselves in both games.

This shows that the hard work that was put into pre-season by players, Management and Backroom Teams alike is now paying off.

As many have said in the past, though, Leagues and Trophies are never won in February so we have a long season ahead of us where nothing will be easy and more hard work will be required. The first two games have proved, however, that we have a squad of players that will work hard to achieve our ambitions.

The make-up of our Underage National League squads has now been completed and everyone is in readiness for the first games of the 2020 season.

The U 17’s and U19’s will kick off on weekending 16th March while the U13’s and U15’s will commence a week later.

We wish the players and Management Teams all the best for 2020.

These players form the Green Line through which the Cabinteely FC First Team players of the future are nurtured and developed.

THE GREEN LINE . . . RIGHT ON TRACK 6

The Green Line started over 50 years ago when Cabinteely Football Club, as we now know it, came in to existence.

Our community-based, volunteer-led club operates under the ethos of Football For All From Small To Tall.

Players, boys and girls, of all abilities have the opportunity to join the club as cubs and kittens and make their way along The Green Line to the highest level of their ability and interest. Coaches and Managers can follow a similar pathway to match their ambitions with that of the club.

That’s why we play over 50 matches every weekend whether it be in Kilbogget, Ballycorus or Stradbrook. That’s why we have the Mini World Cup, now in its 31st year, where over 1,000 players under 13 participate in a two-week extravaganza of football in June each year which boasts a 20,000 footfall in Kilbogget Park.

That’s why we all followed our First Team last year on a journey that brought them to the Promotion Playoffs after only five years in the League of Ireland and with the youngest squad in the League, many of whom came through The Green Line. We only have to look to the likes of Jack Hudson, Paul Fox, Luke Clucas, Zak O’Neill, Peter Quinlan, Vilius Labutis, Ben Clark and Eoin Massey as example of how The Green Line is working.

Through the activities of our club we enhance community development, engagement and diversity. Through our coaching and games our players learn new skills, and are

given the opportunity to tackle issues such as obesity, mental health challenges and anti-social behaviour.

The story of the First Team was mentioned above. Other stories include our Over 35’s, our Special Olympics and Football for All players and Women’s Football.

Sixty five teams, one club, serving the community.

Sustaining this level of activity and planning for the future are the challenges we face on a daily basis in terms of personnel and financial support.

Recently we established a Commercial Work Group whose task will be to identify the opportunities within the club for commercial support in terms of sponsorship, partnership or corporate social responsibility.

Partnering with Cabinteely Football Club through sponsorship, partnership, CSR or advertising offers a way of communicating brands and services, nationally or internationally, through our various social media platforms, or locally to our massive family of parents, players and coaches.

This has been recognised by our latest partner, EDUFIT and all our current sponsors, partners and advertisers.

CAPTAIN’S VIEW – CONOR KEELEY 7 Captain Conor Keeley was in a reflective but positive mood when we caught up with him in training during the week.

We’ve had a great start to the 2020 SSE Airtricity League campaign with two great wins against Bray Wanderers and Athlone Town. The two games were extremely tough with regards to playing conditions and the teams we were facing, but the lads dug deep and got two excellent wins.

Being captain is a great honour for me and I was delighted to be named as captain for the season ahead. I’m looking forward to bringing a lot of experience to the team which I hope will help the lads and myself put in good performances each week.

We have a lot of young players again this year so bringing in good leadership qualities from myself and also other senior members in the squad will be vital to help them and the team this season.

Being out the last few weeks has been difficult; it’s not easy watching games when you’re a player. I had been working long and hard over the pre-season to get myself ready for the 2020 season but I was unfortunate to pick up an injury. Working hard in the gym now, studying in college and working part time at my job has eased the pain slightly and kept me busy. I’m really looking forward to getting back on the pitch again though.

I’m looking forward also to the League Fixture versus Shamrock Rovers II on Friday night and the EA Sports Cup game versus Crumlin United on Sunday. These should be two great games in better weather

conditions than of late, I hope.

Like ourselves Rovers II have a young squad and just like ourselves they will be looking to go out and make an impression on the League. It will be an interesting game between two hungry teams. We are looking to keep our run going.

Facing Crumlin United on Sunday in the EA Sports Cup will be an interesting encounter. Cup matches, of whatever variety, always bring that something special with the addition of extra time and penalties, if necessary. Hopefully not!

Crumlin always produce good players and our lads will be really looking forward to the challenge.

Competition for places for the two games will huge among our lads and everyone will be looking to give a good account of themselves. This will drive everyone on and hopefully will give our loyal supporters something to cheer about for the two games.

TAKING HIS CHANCE – SHANE BARNES Just like buses – you wait for one and then two come along at once!

That’s how Shane Barnes felt last week when bagging two goals in a fantastic tenminute second half spell to seal the 3-1 win over Athlone Town.

“I was delighted to get the two goals. Just before I came on, Eddie Gormley, Assistant Manager, told me to try and make an impact. Obviously scoring two goals isn’t too bad an impact” beamed the 22-year-old.

Having joined the club for the 2019 campaign, the striker, who had 22 appearances last season, mostly off the bench, scored that vital equaliser away to Shelbourne at Tolka Park in July, which kept Cabo in the promotion hunt.

“Competition for places was tough last season with Rob Manley and Marty up top and I was unfortunate with injuries. My focus this season is to stay injury free and to get into the team and score as many goals as I can”, said Barnes. Fully fit Shane certainly took his chances against Athlone Town.

“I felt really sharp against Athlone Town and the 30 minutes I got as a substitute against Bray Wanderers certainly helped, he added. “I’m fully focused. I just want to score as many goals as I can for the team but the most important thing is getting three points for the club each week.” continued from Page 6

A DIVISION UNITED? BY KEVIN DOONEY Perhaps the addition of the Shamrock Rovers II team to the First Division isn’t such a bad thing after all. When was the last time ninety per cent of the division were united on a single issue? Has the first division ever received so much coverage? With articles now commonplace in the Irish press and even getting a piece in the French sports daily L’Equipe.

The inclusion of this Rovers team has at least got the other nine teams on the same page, with the First Division Alliance now formed and speaking as a single voice for the league that often seems like an afterthought in the FAI’s planning.

First Division clubs are right to feel aggrieved at the inclusion of Rovers II, both for the manner in which they were added with zero consultation, with the expressed grievances of the clubs being cast aside and for the precedent this move could set. With a squad of forty-seven, Rovers have double the numbers available to them compared to others in the Division whose squad numbers are in the low twenties. How exactly a squad of that size fits the player development model and facilitates game time much touted by Rovers is a matter for another day.

Rovers are only in this position because they feel it will be of a benefit to them, so no doubt other premier division clubs might want to follow suit with a “development team” of their own. When it comes time to issue licences for next season we could well be looking at another restructuring of the league system to fit the needs of all interested parties. With the resources and facilities at their disposal, and a team having set a precedent surely it would be difficult to reject another Premier Division club who applies for a spot.

The one stable factor of following the League of Ireland is the chronic instability that exists, with clubs coming and going, and divisions being chopped and changed. This being only the third season in the current two divisions of ten breakdown it equally looks like it could be due for a shake up next year with the possibility of Limerick returning and who knows what clubs may want a second team of their own.

This makes the Division having a strong voice all the more important. With talks of an All-Ireland League, a three-tier system, and further changes to the numbers in the divisions all doing the rounds now is certainly an important time for clubs to move beyond rivalries off the field. Hopefully a strong voice from nine teams will be respected and listened to by the powers that be.

Unfortunately this column has been caught up in off the field concerns, which is fitting given how this is generally how the First Division gets it column inches. But on the field things are certainly bright for a Cabo fan, despite two weeks of being lashed by the elements Cabo sit top of the pile seven goals and two wins later.

BUSY WEEKEND AHEAD It’s another busy weekend for Cabinteely FC teams with 26 home and 20 away fixtures over Saturday and Sunday.

Everyone is hoping that the weather will be more kind to us this weekend.

There are some exciting games in prospect especially in Cup Competitions.

On Saturday our DDSL U13C team managed by John Mulligan will host Bluebell/Knockmitten in the League Cup in Kilbogget Park at 10.30pm. An hour later the DDSL U14P team managed by Keith Montgomery have a local derby against St Joseph’s Boys in the Thunder Cup while it’s a high noon kick off for Jamie O’Reilly’s DDSL U14A team against Ballymun United in the Paisley Deering Cup. On Sunday in Kilbogget in the Dublin Bus Cup our U13.3 team managed by Ado Ryan will host Drumcondra at 10.30pm which is the same kick off time for the League Cup fixture for Brian Connolly’s DDSL U14.5 side versus Mark Celtic. An hour later Rob Kennedy’s DDSL U11A1 side will host Finglas United in the Paul Fitzgerald Cup. At 2pm in the afternoon our DDSL U16 A team, managed by David Duffy, will take on neighbours, Dalkey DDSL U16 P1

United in the Masterson Cup. It’s an away fixture on Sunday morning at 11.30am as Noel Mulhall’s DDSL U11A side travel to take on Broadford Rovers in Broadford Park in the Paul Fitzgerald Cup. Finally, it’s a trip to Corkagh Park for our O35’s managed by David Bolton, for a fixture against Booth Road Celtic with a 3pm Kick Off. We wish all our teams the very best of luck for the weekend.

Last weekend we had some inspiring performances, some good wins and some narrow losses, despite the weather conditions. Highlights included the narrow defeat for our 2-1 loss to Shelbourne for our U15P Metro Girls League team with Justine Cronin netting for Cabo and despite two goals from Jack Murphy and another for Fortune Oboyo a 5-3 defeat to Cherry Orchard fir our DDSL U16 P1 side in the Nilfisk Cup. There was better luck for our 13M1 team who defeated Home Farm 4-2 in Kilbogget with the goals coming from Goalkeeper, David Winkler, Jamie Byrne, Keelyn Cullen Stone and Des Traynor.

CRUMLIN UNITED –EA SPORTS CUP 1st ROUND 19 Message from Crumlin United Chairman – Sean Wall Crumlin United FC are delighted to visit Stradbrook to play Cabinteely FC in the First Round of the EA Sports Cup. The two sides have never met before so this is a

“first” for the history books.

Crumlin United FC were founded in 1967 when we started off with a schoolboy team and had to wait until 1981 to enter Senior football. Today we have our Academy, 20 schoolboy teams, under 19’s and 2 senior teams.

Over the last number of years our Saturday side have won the league 7 years in a row narrowly missing out last season and had to be content with finishing second. Our Senior Sunday side that are here today, managed by Martin Loughran, have won all the trophies that the Leinster Senior League have had on offer to us, we have also lifted the FAI Intermediate Cup on 4 occasions over the last few years.

As last year’s League winners we became the first Leinster Senior League side to complete a full League programme unbeaten.

SO FAR SO GOOD by Andrew Dempsey Two wins and seven goals scored – Cabinteely sit top of the First Division after a solid start to the 2020 campaign. An impressive 3-1 win on the road away to Athlone Town – with a double from Shane Barnes has left many already rethinking their pre-season predictions for the Green and White’s.

The 2020 season began in magical circumstances for Cabo – as they saw off local rivals Bray Wanderers by four goals to two in the latest instalment of the East Coast Derby. A brace from Keith Dalton set the hosts on their way – as both Kieran Marty Waters and Vilius Labutis also netted.

Dalton’s opener was a well taken side-foot home, but it was his second that grabbed all the headlines. The Newtown native picked up the ball on the edge of the Bray Wanderers box, before skipping past a Bray defender to give Pat Devlin’s side a remarkable four-nil lead.

However, in the second half, Bray scored two consolation goals through new recruits Gary Shaw and Jack Watson (ex-Cabinteely and UCD) as Cabo ran out winners in the clubs’ fifth ever meeting on a competitive basis.

A trip to Athlone soon followed, and despite an even opening half – it was Cabinteely who took the lead at the Athlone Town Stadium through a superb dinked finish by midfielder Vilius Labutis. Labutis steamrolled his way through the Athlone rear-guard after a through ball from Eoin Massey found the 19-year-old who beat Athlone keeper Aaron Myles from close range to give the visitors the lead.

However, just moments later, the hosts were awarded a spot-kick, but Athlone captain Darren Meenan was unable to profit as his effort from just twelve yards out crashed off the crossbar of Michael Kelly’s goal. But, in the early stages of the second half – the Blue and Black of the Midlands levelled.

Joel Coustrain went on a mazy run on the right-flank, before the ball found its way to Adam Lennon who in turn found the feet of former Galway United star Ronan Manning who netted with a well-placed finish. Substitute Shane Barnes was soon sprung from the bench, and his impact was instant, as he poked home after a Kieran ‘Marty’ Waters flick on.

And the former Wexford FC forward made the game safe after 77 minutes with a thundering effort that flew in at the near post – to secure a great win on the road for the Green and White’s ahead of another big weekend for the club.

• The consumption of intoxicating liquor is not permitted and spectators are not permitted to bring alcohol into the ground.

• Under no circumstances is it permitted to throw any object on to the pitch.

• Unauthorised persons are not permitted to enter the field of play.

• The ground management reserve the right to refuse admission to, or eject any person who refuses to be searched by a member of An Garda Siochana or Security.

• Any person who fails to comply with the instructions of the Stewards, An Garda Siochana or duly authorised persons may be ejected from the ground.

• The ground management will not tolerate any form of racist abuse, threatening behaviour and racist or obscene chanting is strictly forbidden and anyone found misbehaving will be ejected from the ground.

• Cabinteely FC fully supports helping Kick Racism out of football and in no way condone any form of racism or racial abuse. Any person found to be taking part in such action will be ejected from the ground.

St. John Ambulance Cabinteely is one of the most active Divisions in Dublin with a current membership of almost 100. Our volunteer members vary from students to nurses to plumbers to carers when they are not staffing local events such as Seapoint Rugby Blitz/Cabinteely Ceili/DLR 10 kms run or venues such as Croke Park/Aviva Stadium or RDS.
