FROM THE DUGOUT – Pat Devlin I would like to welcome Terry Butler, his back-room staff, players, supporters, Board Members and all associated with Athlone Town to Stradbrook this evening.

I personally have fond memories of Athlone over the years, especially from my time with the club.

The current table shows that we know what we must do in our final two SSE First Division games. We know exactly what to expect tonight. We’ve never had an easy game against them, and we don’t expect one today.

We expect it to be a very tough game.

After this evening, our focus will turn to the Leinster Senior Cup when we welcome St. Patrick’s Athletic to Stradbrook for the very first time on Sunday afternoon and I welcome all involved with the club to this venue.

I would like to wish Stephen O’Donnell the very best in his new appointment although I hope he has little luck on Sunday, only for the rest of the season! I hope he has plenty of opportunities to put things in place for the 2020 season; and wish them a good run for the rest of the current campaign.

Last month, we lost one of our own Michael ‘Locker’ Davis, who sadly lost his brave battle with illness.

It was, and still is a difficult period, for many people. The Testimonial and Festival of Football was a fitting occasion. It was wonderful to see so many people who Locker knew, played with and was involved with in football, at the Testimonial in Stradbrook on 25th August I would like to pass on a little message from his wife Heather, and their family, to say thank you very much for everything that was done.

I personally would like to thank the Organising Committee, all the people who donated, all the clubs who supported in any shape or form, all the volunteers who rallied round on the day doing trojan work and those who turned up to pay tribute.

In what is officially our last home league game of the season, I would like to take the opportunity to thank Blackrock College Rugby Club for all their help throughout the year by facilitating us.

It’s been a massive year which we’ve really enjoyed and it’s been a great relationship with BCRFC. I would like to place on record our thanks to Conor Cleary, all the Blackrock staff and everyone connected with the club for their help and assistance. We wish Blackrock well for their season ahead.

Our Schoolboy season started last weekend with Cabinteely FC being involved in some 38 matches on the opening weekend and a similar number again this weekend. I would like to wish all the players, managers, coaches and families a very successful and enjoyable season and thank them for their continued support of the club.

Finally, I hope everyone enjoys our matches versus Athlone Town in the SSE Airtricity League and St. Patrick’s Athletic in the Leinster Senior Cup here in Stradbrook.

CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME – Larry Bass FUTURE IN OUR HANDS On behalf of Cabinteely Football Club, I extend a warm welcome to the players and officials from Athlone Town for the SSE Airtricity League First Division game here in Stradbrook and to the players and officials of St. Patrick Athletic for the Leinster Senior Cup Quarter Final.

This is an important few weeks for the club at every level. Tonight we face the oldest club in League of Ireland Football in our final official League game of the season knowing that good results tonight and next week away to Wexford FC then we will qualify for the Promotion Play Offs. This would be a remarkable achievement considering our short time in League of Ireland football.

Sunday then sees us compete in the Quarter Final of the oldest cup in Irish football against St. Patrick’s Athletic, one of the kingpins of Dublin and League of Ireland football.

Our schoolboy teams have just embarked on a new season in the DDSL where we hope our players and coaches will continue the development pathway which has seen many of their peers advancing to the National League Underage teams and especially this year to Cabo’s First Team.

Once again, I want to pay tribute to Pat Devlin and his Management team for moulding such a young team into the playoff positions in which we now find ourselves as I do the players whose hard graft in training and games has us in this exciting position at the business end of the season.

We have now reached a crucial time maybe even a crossroads in the life of Cabinteely Football Club on and off the pitch.

Can our teams continue their development and progress on the field and can we sustain this development and progress off the field?

Of course, we can! But and it is a very big BUT, this can only be achieved with the support of everyone attached to, involved in or playing for Cabinteely Football Club.

Resources, whether they be human or financial, continue to be a challenge to Cabinteely Football Club. With a population of over 330,000 in our catchment area and some of the largest retail and commercial areas within our reach we should be the envy of many other clubs that do enjoy such possibilities. We are a community-based club operating a football for all ethos however we have an enormous task in capturing the hearts and minds of the citizens and business people of our catchment area.

Volunteers, sponsors, partners advertisers are vital to the future of Cabinteely Football Club. Also vital are the decisions that are to be made by the Football Association of Ireland on the future of League of Ireland football. Above all those the support of our members is crucial to the future of the club.

We want to continue the development of our players and coaches, we want to improve our facilities, we want to support, retain and recognise our volunteers, we want to play our part in ensuring that work of over 50 years is not flittered away because we didn’t play our part.

The future of Cabinteely Football Club is in all our hands.

FAREWELL ISABELLE It’s more of a season long-loan rather than a permanent transfer.

But we can only hope Jurgen Klopp and Marco Silva don’t get word of Isabelle Connolly’s arrival in Liverpool to continue her educational studies.

“I’m going to do my Masters (in Primary School Teaching) for the year” explained the U17 coach with Cabinteely FC’s League of Ireland outfit who is making the moved across the water to Hope (Teaching) University.

“But I’m flying back every weekend until the end of the (2019) season. I’ll finish out the rest of this season. I just won’t be at training.

I’m very much committed to them until the end of the year.”

She added “It’s going to be tough obviously as I’ll be working in England. I promised the team I’ll finish out the season with them, so I will.”

She continued “My studies are for ten months. So, I’ll be back next July, for the second half of the 2020 season. Hopefully I can continue coaching with Cabinteely.”

Having studied Archaeology and Geography in UCD, Primary School Teaching has always been an ambition of Isabelle’s.

Nurturing younger people seems a trait engrained in her DNA. Afterall, she spent the summer as one of the head coaches at the FAI Sports Direct summer camps.

“I’ve to do my C badge next. Time permitting, I’m hoping to do my C and B badges in the UK. The plan is to have them both done by the time I come back.”

Connolly further explained “It’s ten years since I started coaching at (DDSL) U9’s. I took over that team at U14 level. My father (Julian – current U17 manager), was the manager. So, I helped out at the start with his two teams when he went to League of Ireland. I have a five-year stint with that teams.”

After near a decade coaching Schoolboys/ Girls - at start of the 2018 campaign Cabinteely’s Director of Football Pat Devlin asked her to get involved in the League of Ireland setup, with the SSE Airtricity League U17 side.

Perhaps her legacy is the number of first-team players who’ve come through the pathway under Connolly’s guidance.

That list includes Jack Hudson, Paul Fox, Eoin Massey, Vilius Labutis, Zak O’Neil, Alex Aspil, Luke Clucas and Peter Quinlan.

“Most them played under me or in teams I was involved with. It’s great to see them all doing so well. You would hope that I had some impact as to how they go on to progress in their football careers.”

Isabelle is a trailblazer though, being a female coach in a male dominated sport.

“I don’t think it makes too much of a difference” she revealed.

JUNIOR SECTION – HERE WE GO AGAIN By Oisin Ledwidge The DDSL handed Geralyn in the office a nice logistical nightmare to start off with all 14 SSG boys teams playing at home this weekend, square peg in round hole! Our three girls teams will start their seasons in the coming weeks and great to see a new Under 8 girls starting up.

Our cubs section is also up and running and resumes this Saturday again with numbers building week on week with approx. 80 boys and girls attending last week, so great to see all still flourishing at both ends of the club. We are expecting nice sunny warm weather this weekend so if at a loose end pop down to Kilbogget Park and you can take your choice of team to watch, but maybe best walk down because as we all know parking spaces are not easy find.

As the LoI teams slowly wind down over the next month or so it’s not the same for the schoolboy section and girls section of the club, they are only beginning to get going as the season gets under way.

The 11 a side DDSL boys got under way last weekend and the SSG section kicks off this weekend. For anyone that comes to Kilbogett Park you’ll know of the difficulty of getting a car park space but its similar for our teams as well as they try to find a spare patch of grass to do their preseason training. With 14 Saturday teams and 28 Sunday teams it’s a hive of activity at the moment.

ATHLONE TOWN Stadium: Athlone Town Stadium.

What to expect: While Athlone Town are in the midst of a rotten enough winless run, there is plenty of more positivity surrounding the club this year compared to what occurred last year in Lissywoolen. It is a testament to Terry Butler and his backroom staff given the way Aaron Callaghan’s former number two has revitalised the club’s fortunes during the off-season.

While they lie second from bottom in the league table, the Black and Blue of the Midlands are light years ahead of their predicament last term where they came bottom of the pile by a considerable distance. Not far off FAI Cup quarter-finalists Galway United, it has been a much improved year at the office for the Midlander’s. If you said that to anyone associated with Athlone Town, they would have certainly nabbed your hand off given the turbulence of the last two years.

There have been plenty of new arrivals at Athlone Town during the off-season. With very few staying from last year’s squad, Butler had his work cut out and he has added to his squad superbly well during the break. Darren Meenan and Kealan Dillon were both marquee signings at Lissywoolen while Aaron Myles has also impressed suitably since joining forces with Terry Butler and co.

The increased sense of positivity around the club has been emphasised by the latest installation of the club’s new 4G astro turf pitch which has given a new lease of life around the League of Ireland’s oldest professional club. There is also a decent contingent of ex-Cabinteely stars currently plying their trade with Athlone Town. Ollie Hamzat, Sean Fitzpatrick, Aaron Brilly, Nika Kalandarishvili and Yean Yves-Poame to name a few who have played for the Green and Whites at Stradbrook.

While they have many years and perhaps bridges to cross before they can get back to the heady days of European games against the likes of AC Milan, make no mistake about it, Athlone are getting back on their feet once more which will make for an intriguing matchup on Friday evening at Stradbrook.

What to expect: Last season’s beaten Leinster Senior Cup finalists St. Patrick’s Athletic are the visitors to Stradbrook on Sunday afternoon in the Leinster Senior Cup to face Pat Devlin’s promotion chasing Cabinteely in the fifth round of the famous old competition.

There has been a bit of change at Richmond Park in recent weeks, with former Dundalk midfielder Stephen O’Donnell being installed as Head Coach of the Saints following the surprise departure of Harry Kenny as boss after the three-one defeat away to UCD in the FAI Cup. The Athletic have flattered to deceive for much of the 2019 campaign, with a lack of consistency putting pay to any chance of a top of the table push for the Inchicore outfit who are languishing right in the middle of the table – much to the dismay of a passionate support on the Emmet Road venue.

However, while they have struggled at times, there have been a number of players who have stood out for the Athletic this term. Jake Walker and Glen McAuley have impressed up top in recent weeks as has midfielders Darragh Markey and Jamie Lennon who have both turned the heads of Stephen Kenny’s Republic of Ireland under-21 set up.

However, it is probable that Stephen O’Donnell will opt for a much change side on Sunday afternoon, giving precedence to their league aspirations. With Europa League football still well within their reach, the focus is likely to be solely on getting the required results to achieve that lucrative goal.

With the Leinster Senior Cup providing both sides the last opportunity to secure a piece of silverware for this season – this has the makings of a real Sunday showdown in the capital with a spot in the last four at stake.

Opposition Views: “It’s important to assess and see how the club works, see what players we have. It’s a seven-match period to assess everything and hopefully we’ll get everything we want in place for pre-season in January. I always wanted to do management. When I knew my career was coming to an end, I had an eye on it. There’s no right time or a masterplan for this. It was too good an opportunity. St Pat’s were too big and good a club to turn down.”
