would like to thank all their sponsors for their continued support

CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME – Larry Bass I extend a very warm welcome to everyone to Stradbrook this evening and in particular I welcome the players, officials and supporters of Bray Wanderers to this SSE Airtricity League First Division game. We made a very positive start to the resumption of the League last weekend and we are looking to continue that progress as we chase leaders Shelbourne who we visit next Friday. The three games, League and Cup, between ourselves and Bray Wanderes this season have been close and exciting affairs and I’m sure this evening’s game will be no different. We have just completed yet another successful Mini World Cup, the 30th edition of this great summer event in Kilbogget. If you looked at our First Team squad last week you would have seen that many of the players have come through the Cabo system and many of them would have been participants in the MWC down through the years. I would like to pay tribute to all the participants in MWC 2019, I hope it was an enjoyable experience for you all. I also want to thank the MWC Committee and all the Volunteers. The MWC doesn’t just happen over two weeks in June each year. Many days and nights go into preparing for the event and those involved in the preparation and over the two weeks deserve our greatest admiration and appreciation. Of course, an event such as the MWC wouldn’t happen without the support of our sponsors and advertisers. I extend our gratitude to our title sponsors, Mooney’s Hyundai, as well as all our sponsors and advertisers, for their generous support and we look forward to working with them on this or

other projects in the future. Speaking of the future, the future of Irish football and starts today. The past few months has seen Irish football grab the headlines for all the wrong reasons and the events have been particularly hurtful to the many managers, coaches and volunteers who make football happen week in week out throughout the country. The Annual General Meeting of the Football Association of Ireland at the end of the month offers an excellent, and perhaps, the only opportunity, to mark out the future of the game here. I call on all of those in leadership in football in Ireland to show leadership in the coming weeks and right the wrongs of the past so that the players like the 1,200 participants in our recent MWC will know that the future of Irish football is bright for them. The future of Cabinteely FC starts today too. Through our Strategic Plan we have developed a pathway for our players, our coaches and our managers. We now have five teams competing at national level with players who have followed that pathway. Our First Team is in the play-off position currently and has on occasions topped the League this season. We have had notable league and cup success at schoolboy/schoolgirl level recently and I congratulate all those teams who did Cabinteely so proud. Cabinteely FC players have also been to the fore at representative and international level too. None of this can or will happen without support both in financial and personnel resources. Did you know that it costs us €73,000 per annum to hire pitches for all of our teams

each year? Injuries, physios and medical bills cost us €26,000 and Referees Fees cost us €21,000 per annum. These are just a few of our costs. Thanks to our families and members we are able to meet some of our costs but obviously there are significant gaps which we endeavour to fill through sponsorship, advertising and fundraising. Matches in Kilbogget, Ballycorus and Stradbrook just don’t happen. A lot of preparatory and post-match work is required. Can you help? Do you know of someone who can volunteer for as little as an hour a week? Do you know of someone who can support our Golf Classic in Woodbrook on 30th of August or our Strictly Dancing Event in the Royal Marine on 28th September? Do you know of anyone who could support us through sponsorship or advertising for as little as €500?

FROM THE DUGOUT – Pat Devlin I would like to welcome Gary Cronin, his backroom staff and players, and the Bray Wanderers management to Stradbrook this evening. My association with Bray is well-known. I made great friendships there over 27-years, starting back before entering the League of Ireland in 1985.We had fantastic adventures together – winning two memorable FAI Cup’s in 1990 and 1999. Unfortunately, we went our separate ways in 2013 and tonight they are in opposition to us. We wish them all the very best – after tonight! We are all chasing Shelbourne in the SSE Airtricity League First Division promotion stakes and the play-offs. For us at Cabinteely, tonight is a massive game as are our next three games against Shelbourne, Longford Town and Drogheda United. We will know exactly where we are and what we can achieve after those fixtures. It’s still all to play for. It’s no use looking back. But we have had a great season – so far. We just have to chase Shelbourne as much as we can. Our old friend Michael ‘Locker’ Davis – the famous kit man at Bray and of late at Cabinteely, is unwell. We all wish a speedy recovery, and hope to see him back on the football side-lines in the near future. Our new Academy has resumed after the summer break. It has been a great success so far

and our Summer Camps started this week and will continue next week in Kilbogget Park. It just shows there is always something happening at Cabinteely. May I take the opportunity to thanks our sponsors for their continued generous support. I hope we at Cabinteely can do the club proud – on and off the pitch for the rest of 2019 and our supporters and friends have something to shout about and be proud of. Enjoy the game.

INTERVIEW – Yuta Sasaki “I am very happy, it’s too good to be true." – Yuta Sasaki As cameo debuts go, they don’t get much better. It took just three minutes and three touches for Yuta Sasaki to make history on the double. The winger came off the bench on Friday against Wexford FC to become the first Japanese outfield player to play in the SSE Airtricity League. Just a few minutes later when the final whistle went, the 23-year-old winger had become the first Japanese player to score in the League of Ireland. “I’m very happy. It’s too good to be true” remarked Sasaki after registering Cabo’s second goal in the 2-0 success at Stradbrook. It even earned him the home team's man of the match award. “It was a great through ball by Keith (Dalton). I took a good first touch then was able to shoot past the goalkeeper” he added on his historic score. From Chiba – were the Republic of Ireland trained at the 2002 World Cup – the winger has attracted significant media interest, especially on social media, since signing with Cabo last week. He has taken the long route to Ireland via South America and Europe having played in the land of the rising sun with Vertfee Taita. Spells in Paraguay with Independiente F.B.C followed on from 2013 then in Germany with VfR Mannheim and 1.FC Bruchsal. He landed in Ireland in 2018 featuring with both Dublin Bus and lately with Cherry Orchard in the Leinster Senior League. “After the announcement, I have been very busy. I can’t believe the interest. People responding to me on social media; messaging about me – it’s unbelievable. Even people back in Japan. It’s really nice.” Sasaki hopes that this is only the beginning. The support from He wants to help Cabinteely push (Director of Football) Pat back up the First Division table into Devlin, coaches Eddie Gormley and the play-off reckoning. Graham O’Hanlon as well as all the lads “I want to play has been fantastic. They believe in me.” more. He went on to stress “Hopefully I can 8

score more goals. Even if I don’t score, I will try my best to help the team.”

MASCOTS

Ross Young: Ross joined Cabo Cubs at four years of age after discussing his options with his best mate, Rhys Knight, in Junior Infants class! Like his two brothers Liam and Robbie, there has only ever been one Club for Ross, Cabo. He has benefited greatly under the guidance of Dillon Foley and Tucker Hennessy and has been a reliable performer on their Premier team and also an ever present in the Academy. Ross suffered a broken arm recently and we all wish him a speedy recovery.

Our Under 12s, mascots at the recent Wexford game.

Henry Norris: Henry is just four years old and hails from Lake Jackson in Texas. He loves attending his soccer shots training and his other hobbies include ice hockey and Paw Patrol. Henry is here tonight with his mum and dad, Mary and Ryan. Mary was first introduced to League of Ireland football 12 years ago when she completed her Clemson University Internship in the Carlisle Grounds with Bray Wanderers where Eddie Gormley was then manager. We hope you have a wonderful evening here with Cabinteely FC.

A VIEW FROM THE WING – Keith Dalton goal we were allowed to kick on from there. “Wexford are always our bogey team at home when we’ve played them here, so it was good to get the two-nil win. “Hopefully we can stay in the Playoffs and keep winning games, there’s only nine games left so we just need to keep doing what we’re doing.” Following Sasaki’s fairy-tale League of Ireland debut, the former Dundalk underage star added the importance of the ranks being bolstered ahead of the final round of games. “New faces are a big thing at this time of the year,” the 22-year-old said. “It adds to the competition and it’s good to have a player like Yuta in the squad. There’s a few more coming in as well so it’s good in that sense.” Next up for Cabinteely is a home fixture against Bray Wanderers, where the former Bohemians defender expects an entertaining contest against Pat Devlin’s side. “It’s going to be a tough game, but I think we owe them one from last time. It was the first night of the season back then so next Friday against Bray should be a good game.”

“We need to keep doing what we are doing”. . . Keith Dalton Cabinteely winger Keith Dalton stressed the importance of Cabinteely continuing their positive momentum following their comfortable two-goal win over Wexford at Stradbrook Road last Friday evening. Yuta Sasaki grabbed all the headlines with his first League of Ireland goal after Luke Clucas fired Cabo ahead early on in the second period. Speaking after the game, Dalton was pleased with how the Green and Whites overcame their Wexford counterparts, their first home win over the Slaneysiders since March 2017. “I thought the lads played very well from start to finish. We were creating a bit in the first half but weren’t able to score and after Luke’s

GROUND HOPPER – MARK JENKS

16

Having visited over 250 football grounds, Mark Jenks has come over from England to celebrate his 50th birthday by watching tonight’s game in Stradbrook. We are delighted to have him here to celebrate the occasion. This is Mark’s interesting story which started back in 1984. Thirty-five years ago, I attended my first football league match between Tranmere Rovers and Blackpool closely followed by games at Goodison Park and Anfield. Despite none of the family being interested in the sport I was hooked. I loved everything from the programmes, the football kit to the grounds. In those early years, I had many misadventures and still do from time to time. They include long cycle rides, missed trains, postponed matches and broken-down cars. For the first three seasons, it was Liverpool first and Tranmere second but this was reversed with a few defining moments, firstly, watching Tranmere narrowly beat Exeter City 1-0 in 1987 to stay in the football league. My first season ticket was for Liverpool in 1986 and my second was for Tranmere in 1989. It’s now 19 years since I last missed a Tranmere home league game and I think I’ve seen just about everything you could hope for - with highlights including four promotions, and five of our nine visits to Wembley. In 1997, I completed the 92 English grounds for the first time with a trip to Old Trafford. My total now stands at 153 including former grounds and new teams to the leagues. I currently stand on 91 as I try and source a ticket to Spurs’ new ground. Dropping out of the league helped me

expand my non-league count which is very healthy especially in the top three tiers of the national league. Along the way, I also developed an interest for Scottish grounds and from the teams competing in the 2019/20 season, I’ve only got four left to visit for a home fixture. I’ve a smattering of foreign games under my belt from games in Germany, France, Spain, Holland and Italy. I hope to add Sweden to the list next week. As for the Emerald Isle, it all started three years ago after coming up with a vague plan to do four games in four countries in four days. Firstly, Tranmere’s friendly against Bolton on the Tuesday (England); Edinburgh City v Livingston on Wednesday (Scotland); Connah’s Quay v Vojvodina on Thursday (Wales) and Bohemians v Derry on the Friday (Republic of Ireland). To be honest I missed a trick not doing a game in Northern Ireland on the Saturday. But the idea had been at short notice and I was thinking about Tranmere’s next friendly on the Saturday! Since my first excursion, I’ve visited Shelbourne, St. Pats, Shamrock Rovers, the Aviva Stadium (Republic of Ireland v U.S.A), Drogheda United and UCD. Last summer, I was roped in as designated driver for my Aunt and Uncle over from the States. Along with my Mum, we planned a visit to the Wild Atlantic Coast which paved the way for me to watch the Galway United v Cabinteely match along with a non-match day visit to Athlone Town’s ground. One trip that didn’t go smoothly was in 2018, having watched Salford on the Saturday in a game that swung wildly from sunshine

17

to blizzard. I had hoped to watch St. Pats playing a rare 3.00pm game on St Patrick’s Day. However having boarded the ferry, we were told of delays in the crossing due to the inclement weather. News then came through that the game had failed a pitch inspection which also befell my back up game at Bray. It was too late to disembark and had to face around an 11-hour round trip including my drive to Holyhead with little to show for it. I did get the Dart to Bray to look at the Carlisle Grounds; but it was closed. My second planned trip to Bray was also scuppered twice this season when firstly my boss wouldn’t sanction my time off for the visit of Cobh Ramblers, and the next fixture was moved for an U17 European tournament. Friday night football here has helped me as I can get back for games closer to home the next day however, if I am to visit the remaining grounds, I’ll have to stay a bit longer or bring a car! Today will be my 50th birthday. It’s one downside to having a Summer birthday that you rarely get to see a game on the big day.But I guess you’ll get the feeling that there’s nowhere I’d rather be today than watching Cabinteely. The day I visited the Aviva, I also came to Blackrock via Kilbogget Park (doh). So, I know what to expect. I feel strongly that modern football certainly at the top level has lost its soul and, in some ways, I fear for the future. Money and greed are ruining the game and it seems like the hierarchy within the game don’t want teams that can’t attract gates of 20,000 +. Year upon year, there are unnecessary

GROUND HOPPER – MARK JENKS rule changes and whilst they see it as strengthening the game at European In 1997, I completed the 92 English grounds level and within the top two tiers, for the first time with a trip to Old Trafford. it is having the opposite effect and My total now stands at 153 including former eroding the roots of the game. OPPOSITION WATCH

BRAY WANDERES FC Stadium: Carlisle Grounds. Manager: Gary Cronin. Club Captain: Paul Keegan. Table Position: 6th. Recent form: LWLLW. Top Scorer: Dylan McGlade (5). What to expect: After a devastating defeat to Drogheda United in injury time last time out, Bray Wanderers make the short trip up the N11 to visit Stradbrook for just the second time this season. The Seagulls secured a somewhat fortuitous three-nil over Cabo on that occasion on the opening night of the season. Since then, Pat Devlin’s side have gone unbeaten against their Co. Wicklow opposition with a win and a draw in the Leinster Senior Cup and First Division respectively against the Carlisle Grounds outfit. However, the Seagulls have struggled away from home so far this season having only registered three wins on their travels all season with wins over Athlone Town, Galway United and Cabo. Gary Cronin’s side have developed a distinct style of play so far this season with their threat on the wing and from set-piece scenarios proving key. There are plenty of players to watch out for in this Bray Wanderers side, with Dylan McGlade perhaps being the most eye-catching. The former Longford Town winger scored fifteen goals last term for the Midlander’s during their failed promotion tilt with the 24-yearold scoring five so far this season already. Dylan Barnett is also a man to keep an eye on with his threat down the left-flank and from free-kicks a major asset to Gary Cronin’s playoff hunting side. The defensive pairing of Sean Heaney and Killian Cantwell can often prove to be a tough nut to crack at the best of times while the added experience of Gabriel Sava in goal is an added bonus for the Seagulls. While hopes of a First Division title appear distant for the Seagulls, their Playoff aspirations remain well and truly on track, even with their most recent disappointment at United Park. Bray can pose serious questions for any side in this division, and teams in higher divisions as well, ask Shamrock Rovers for one. Head to Head: -
