A PROMISING FUTURE! LMC Polled Paulette

Our POLLED Brahmans are selling, they are winning, they are getting better and the market is expanding with more and more prominent breeders investing in POLLED genetics every month. We can hardly wait to show you LMC Polled Xavier and our polled dark cherry red Winchester x LN Margarita herd bull prospects. We are excited about the future of POLLED BRAHMANS. Look for this promising, young, double polled, future donor female in the Winston Walters show string next fall and spring. She is a champion and Houston class winner. She is sired by the soon to be Register of Renown LMC LF Ambassador bull. We have some of her paternal sisters for sale now. Her name is LMC Polled Paulette and she represents what the future of American POLLED Brahman cattle is all about – QUALITY & CONSUMER DEMAND.

LMC Polled Jody is one of our junior herd sires that NEARS PERFECTION IN THE FLESH. He is just 27 mos. in this photo but as you can see has excellent breed character, pigment, length, balance, muscle and testicular development with a very tight sheath. He is double polled with small scurs, is very docile and offers our program NEW BLOOD being sired by a POLLED bull bred by Gary Finto and out of a Jody Youngblood polled cow with several generations of polled breeding. We just put him on the cows and are expecting some great calves from him next spring. We feel confident that our future is very promising having young bulls like Oro and Jody breaking into our star studded herd sire battery.

LMC Polled Jody

LMC WFF Polled Oro LMC WFF Polled Oro (photo at 18 mos. of age) is a genetic gem sired by the super consistent LMC LF Ambassador (JDH Mr. George Manso x V8 899/4) and out of our 707 “MATRIARCH” cow who is the dam to Pistolero, Polled Maestro, Polled Master and Polled Success. 707 and 899/4 are the two cow families that we have built our polled program around. Both of these cows produced into their late teens and had excellent udders and production records. Oro is double smooth polled, super correct, rich in breed character, muscle, length, balance and pedigree clout. We will continue to promote these two cow families as they continue to raise the bill paying kind of cattle that every cowman desires. COME SEE US !!

Emma Elizabeth

was born April 24, 2013 to Lauren and Jim-Bob Trant of JT Brahmans in Anderson, Texas. She weighed 6 pounds, 7 ounces and measured 19.5 inches in length.

theHat

This month I would like to offer a "Tip of the Hat" to two outstanding groups of people that I have had the opportunity to work with during this summer. First, the Mexican Cebu Association for hosting the National Brahman Show in Acapulco, Mexico. Eric Abrahmsom and his staff stepped up and secured the air conditioned convention center in Acapulco as the site of this year’s show. I was accompanied by my oldest daughter Megan during the judging trip. We are most appreciative of the hosts’ hospitality.

Second to the members of our American Junior Brahman Association. We are blessed to have the current young men and young ladies that make up the membership of the AJBA. The talent level runs deep with outstanding speakers, livestock judges, showmen, future breeders and promoters of our great breed. It amazes me how our youth can often rise up and display integrity and character no matter what situation faces them. Thank you for being the example, your actions will be rewarded.

Welcome Beulah Elizabeth,

the Duchess of Poteet, was born to David and Luisa Carolina Domsch on July 8 at 1:15 p.m. She greeted the world weighing 8 pounds, 12 ounces and measuring 19.5 inches in length.

There were

TWO Stuart Brothers in Bartow, Florida written by Marcus Shackelford

In the early 1930s J. K. and W. H. Stuart purchased some half and three quarter blood Brahman bulls to put on their native Florida cows. They were so impressed with the calves that they began to purchase registered Brahman bulls. By 1938 they owned a number of them. In 1939 J. K. and W. H. joined together to expand and improve their commercial operation by keeping their Brahman cross heifers. In 1942 and 1943, they purchased their first registered Brahman females for the purpose of raising their own Brahman bulls. They became members of the ABBA at that time. At the end of 1947, they divided their registered cattle and each maintained their own herd. Each of the Stuart brothers went in different directions, and both were successful. In 1948 W. H. hired Max Hammons, who worked in Iowa at an experiment station, to head up his purebred operation of forty five cows and two bulls. Max had experience in performance testing, record keeping and showing. Ten years later the University of Florida began their Florida Beef Cattle Improvement Association with computerized records, and Max was the first president. He was also president of the ABBA in the early 1970s. W. H. was a laid back “individual” that was easy-going and well respected in central Florida. His family had extensive phosphate holdings in central Florida and various business interests. Max became the face of W. H. Stuart Ranch and began marketing their cattle. They had the Reserve National Champion Bull in 1962 and the National Champion Bull in 1978. Sid Crochett, the cattle manager at U. S. Sugar, talked Max into swapping bulls for a breeding season. U. S. Sugar bred the Reserve National Champion 652/1 bull to their cattle and established their Esto line with his sons. Diamond T Ranch bought the 542/8 National Champion Bull while he was still showing and they used him extensively. W. H. Stuart Ranch sold and leased a lot of bulls to various AI studs because of their performance records, and they marketed their cattle worldwide until they sold their herd of more than 500 cows to J. 1967 National Reserve Grand Champion, Sugarland’s Esto 2-446/3, sire of 1971 National Grand Champion Female

Mr. J. K. Stuart A Rocking S Ranch cow with Stuart bloodlines

in Madisonville, Texas in the late 1980s. J. K. Stuart’s approach to the Brahman business never changed. He used his purebred Brahmans to improve his commercial cattle. He never hired a purebred manager and mated all of the cattle himself. He knew good cattle and studied pedigrees. J. K.’s taste was simple. He simply wanted the best. He had prize roses and orchids. His registered quarter horses featured sons of Poco Bueno and Blue Rock. When he crossed his purebred cattle with the English bred bulls they came from the finest herds in the U. S. and Canada. He loved the Brahman – Shorthorn and the Brahman – Angus cross heifers for his commercial herds. When I met Ted Mangum of J. D. Hudgins, in the late 1970s, he complained that J. K. Stuart would call him and keep him on the phone for hours at a time and talk about Brahman pedigrees, and all he would buy were his old wore out herd bulls. “He is too tight to buy a good bull,” complained Ted. I told Ted I thought he was mistaken. I told him the Stuart brothers, J. K. and W. H. had sold their phosphate interest in Hardee County for $101 million in 1974, so I didn’t think money was the issue. I said “Ted, have you ever thought that J. K. figured if you had bred a bull for 8 to 10 years that he would be good enough for his program too?” Ted laughed and said he had not thought about that. I was lucky enough to lease J. K.’s purebred cattle after his death. I supplied all of the bulls and bought all of the calves. I also worked all of their F1 cattle for nothing. I showed the cattle to people from Texas, who visited Florida, and their response was always the same. I never heard of J. K. Stuart, but these look like “front pasture Hudgins cows!” W. H. was the Brahman breeder everyone knew and he marketed cattle everywhere. You could not buy a good animal from J. K., because he kept them for himself. Jack James, a neighbor and fellow Brahman breeder, who was always trying to buy a good bull or heifer from him, complained, “What do you offer a man who doesn’t need money?” W. H. Stuart was a prince of a man that was always helping everyone, and I had great admiration and respect for him. I never met J. K. Stuart, but I greatly admired the cattle that he bred and some of my best cattle go back to his breeding. Mike Partin’s Esto Cherra 754 bull was out of a W. H. Stuart cow. Bubba Hudgins’ 412 bull was out of a W. H. Stuart bred cow. The G. L. Paret herd in Louisiana was based on W. H. Stuart 479 bull and the list goes on. Not many people had J. K. Stuart bred Brahmans, but they were good. Now you know the rest of the story.

Nutrition Photo taken at K Bar Farms in Louisiana

Laying the Groundwork for a Healthy, Productive Calf Scientists have long known that the nutrition and management of a pregnant female has direct effects on the health and growth of the fetus and the baby. Some of the earliest work by Barker and his team (1993) at Southampton University in England showed that human mothers who were malnourished during the first half of their pregnancy had children with an increased incidence of health problems as adults including diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.

In livestock production, lack of proper nutrition often occurs during gestation, particularly during the first two trimesters, even though we know that the bulk of fetal growth occurs in the third trimester. In lactating beef cattle this can result from competition for nutrients going toward milk production or in heifers, competition for nutrients used for growth and/or milk production. While variations in the duration and severity of maternal undernutrition do not always result in a reduced calf birth weight, alterations such as glucose intolerance, skewed growth patterns and alterations in structure and physiology have been reported.

as simple as hair coloring or more complex traits such as milking ability, fertility, longevity, etc., factors that have a direct effect on animal profitability and a measurable economic effect. To grasp this we need to understand a few things concerning the developmental process from conception through birth of the calf. First some general observations: zz

The concept that lifetime health is determined in large measure by the environment experienced during development is the single most important story in human and animal health (Nathanielsz, 2006).

zz

The process through which a stimulus or insult establishes a permanent response.

zz

Fetal (Developmental) programming hypothesis has several components:

In the beef industry the primary goals are to produce high volumes of milk to support a rapidly, efficiently growing calf in an effort to maximize profitability. A confounding factor exists here in that during the period when the cow is pushed to reach her peak in production and thus requires a high level of nutrient intake, this coincides with the period when we are also attempting to get her rebred. Thus, when there is a significant demand for production oriented nutrients we are also attempting to achieve conception and initiate embryonic and fetal development and growth. Many producers recognize the breeding function as a means to an end. Future profits depend on a pregnancy and full term delivery of a calf. Often, insufficient focus is given to prenatal care of the calf and the assumption is made that if the diet is balanced for production of the current calf it should also meet the needs for embryonic development and subsequent fetal growth. This is where the fetal programming (FP) concept comes into play. Many producers with a strong focus on long-term herd quality will tell you that they are attempting to produce calves that have a set of genetics that will result in improved production and health performance. In heifer calves this extends to reproductive performance as well. This can also be seen as having a multigenerational effect as specific traits pass through a dam to her offspring then to its off spring and so on. This may be

yy

The ability to improve animal production and wellbeing by altering the maternal environment holds enormous challenges and great opportunities for researchers and animal industries (producers).

yy

Provides the basis for establishing and supporting the maximized expression of genetics. Of particular interest to the cattleman is phenotypic expression.

yy

Involves long term management and nutrition.

yy

May be multigenerational

All this can be summarized in one statement: What we do with the cow, her nutritional plane, how she is managed, sets the stage for how the calf she is carrying performs throughout the rest of its life.

The Principles The principles or basics of the FP concept are fairly straight forward. They include: 1.

Fetal programming can be positive or negative.

2.

Base genetics of sire and dam must be considered.

3.

Initial stage is embryonic attachment to the uterine wall and development of blood supply is critical.

Nutrition

Laying the Groundwork... continued from page 22

4. Nutrient availability to the developing fetus/embryo. 5.

Cow stress level.

While all these principles are important let’s focus on two key items. A critical stage in this process is embryonic entry to the uterus, attachment and establishment of functional utero-placental and fetal circulation. Ruminants have a cotyledonary placenta. This means that the calf is attached to the cow at multiple points, each of these points providing for the delivery of blood, oxygen, nutrients, etc. Research has shown that nutrient restriction of cows from day 30 to 125 of gestation resulted in reduced caruncular and cotyledonary weights from nutrientrestricted. Fetal weights from nutrientrestricted cows also tended to be less (Zhu et al., 2007). Even after correction of the diet during day 125 to 250 of gestation, caruncular and cotyledonary weights were still reduced for nutrientrestricted cows; however, fetal weight was not different. This suggests that the cow’s nutritional plane at the time of embryo attachment and the related placental development and structures directly affects how these structures develop and can thus affects the flow of blood, oxygen, nutrients, hormones and other blood chemicals from the cow to the fetus. The flow of these various metabolic components is critical considering that an unborn calf’s heartbeat is detectable as early as day 21-22 post conception. In the days following it has been long known (Hubbert, 1972) that sequential development of Pancreas, Liver, Adrenals, Lungs, Thyroid, Spleen, Brain, Thymus and Kidney occurs. These are all critical organs and susceptible to mal-development should a restriction or insult to the blood or nutrient flow occur at a specific stage of development. Cow nutrition also plays a major role. In the beef cow, during the point in time when breeding and a subsequent conception is to take place, assuming she is not a heifer, she is well into an increasing level of milk production to meet her current calf’s demand. In some cases she could be in a negative energy balance (producing more energy

than what she is taking in and may be behind the curve on protein, mineral and other nutrient intake as well. Given this dynamic where competition exists between the developing fetus and the nutrient demands of high milk production it is possible and even likely that a shortage of one or more nutrients may exist for optimal embryonic and fetal development. One specific example could be the availability of the trace minerals Copper and Zinc, deficiencies of which during developmental stages have been shown to have a direct effect on the calf’s immune system development. If such a deficiency exists prenatally, after birth the calf may show a higher rate of sickness and thus requires more treatment either while on milk or later during weaning and transition. This means the calf has to be handled more and that antibiotics have to be utilized to treat the illness. This can result in lower milk production response if the calf is a heifer as well as decreased longevity in the herd. Both of these effects will negatively impact the animal’s economic performance and overall profitability. So at this point the bottom line may be that failure to provide proper levels of Cu and Zn (at a cost of pennies) and specific fetal developmental stages while the cow is gestating may end up costing large amounts of money in health costs and reduced long term performance. Other implications come into play when we consider major nutrients such as energy and protein. Obviously the maternal groundwork that is laid from conception through birth is important to the new calf and is a complex process. For the calf to develop properly and properly express those genetics that would lead to a long, healthy, productive life focus needs to be given to the cow’s nutrition and management during this exceptionally important time. 2013 The Brahman Catalyst Sale

Friends,

We are excited to welcome you to the Inaugural Brahman Catalyst Sale, featuring superior Brahman cattle and genetics from some of the breed’s most prestigious bloodlines. These sale offerings go back to some of the greatest bulls in the breed, including Mr. V8 980/5, JDH Brett Manso 175, JDH Mr. Manso 579, JDH Sir Walter Manso, and +TTT Mr. Texas Lotto 670 just to mention a few. The sale will be held at Moreno Ranches, located at 17 Virginia Circle in Venus, Florida on Saturday, September 7 at 11:00am. We will be hosting an open-bar reception at the sale facilities on Friday night before the sale with a Cuban-style roasted pig, and featuring live entertainment from the Red Hot Rooster Band. We will also be providing brunch prior to the start of the sale on Saturday. All cattle will be available for viewing the entire day on Friday, as well as Saturday morning leading up to the sale. We have secured a hotel block in Lake Placid, just a short drive from the ranch. Full details are listed here in the catalog. In addition to being the second largest cattle producing county in the state of Florida, Highlands County also offers some fun attractions to visit. Some of these include the Sebring International Raceway, the 1300-acre “Caladium Capital of the World,” and Gatorama- the world’s largest alligator and crocodile farm. If you need further directions or if you have any questions, we are only a phone call away. We look forward to seeing you on sale day!

We jumped at the opportunity to offer such an outstanding female as the first progeny available at public auction from our progressive Brahman genetics program. Our forward-thinking prospective of the Brahman industry allowed us to get on the ground floor of the sentinel Mr .V8 980/5 bull that we purchased back in 2010. This power-packed bull offers a great hybrid of style and performance to fit any program from range bull productions to show-ring superstars. Moreno Ms. Pina Colada 124 comes to you straight from our show string. Her great dam is Miss MK 7/617 who is out of the 1999 International Junior Champion Bull, Diamond T 101, the matrix of the esteemed McKenney Farms program. We at Moreno Ranches feel that this rising star will easily fall into the top of any Brahman herd in the country. If you’re looking for a leader that offers proven outcross genetics, look no further.

Moreno Ms. Santa Clara 178 is an amazing show heifer that has already proven herself at the 2013 All-American, where she was a class contender. She represents one of the finest and most prominent pedigrees that the JD Hudgins program has ever created. The mating of Miss MK 6/577 and JDH Mr. Manso 579/4 has created an amazing specimen in 178. She is super big footed, very sound in her movement and has that great show look to her. It will be a tough decision between 178 and some of the other full siblings selling in this sale. Same Name, New Owners

Sam Kane Beef Processors Cattlemen, feeders and beef industry enthusiasts all came together for an appreciation dinner to honor the new owners of Sam Kane Beef Processors out of Corpus Christi, Texas. The event was hosted by Dr. Charlie Graham, owner of Graham Land and Cattle in Gonzales, Texas on June 19, 2013. Throughout the night many spoke of the beef industry and its progress and impact on the economy. However, the highlight of the night was when the program was turned over to the new owners and investors of Sam Kane Beef Processors. Lou Waters Jr., spoke on behalf of all the new investors. He discussed how operations of the historic Corpus Christi packing plant, founded in 1949, will continue under the Sam Kane name but will no longer be affiliated with the old ownership. Sam Kane has long been a leader in developing and implementing new beef processing technologies in an effort to provide customers with the highest quality meats and services possible. The company also plans to retain Sam Kane’s nearly 700 employees. “We have received a lot of support from the industry,” said Waters. “We are here to stay. We are capitalized with a great group of investors.” Waters discussed four points of management that the new owners would implement at Sam Kane. Lou Waters, Jr. said, “We are very excited to be such an integral

part of the South Texas and overall Texas livestock industry. We plan to implement new branded Beef programs as our team works directly with customers through new ways to market Beef. We are deeply excited, adequately capitalized, and will work hard to expand this legendary company. We are Texas Beef.” Texas Agriculture Commissioner, Todd Staples, informed the crowd that even though the cattle numbers have been declining in Texas because of drought conditions, the Texas Beef industry represented over 10.5 billion in revenues to producers, feeders, packers and retailers. He talked of the importance of grassroots Texas cattle producers and the role they play in the Texas economy as a whole. The importance of the new ownership of Sam Kane Processors was said to enhance Texas Agriculture and the future of south Texas cattlemen. Other speakers that added their appreciation included Dr, Molly K. McAdams, retail Beef consultant; Ethan Stool, Pfizer Animal Health; Steve Stevens, Chairman of the Board of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo; and Texas Land Commissioner, Jerry Patterson.

Florida win makes All American History On Friday, June 28, cattle from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas competed at the 2013 All American National Junior Brahman Show in Lufkin, Texas. History was made as a Florida Brahman won Grand Champion female for the first time ever since the All American began in 1980. Over 570 females competed on Friday when Bobbi Jean Frazier lead Moreno Ms. Lady Reba 112 to a class win and then to be selected as the Intermediate Champion female. In the championship drive, Judge Mitch Thomas of Texas selected Moreno Ms. Lady Reba 112 as the 2013 Grand Champion Red Brahman female. Mr. Thomas spoke highly of Lady Reba saying, “When I first saw her come out here today, I pretty much fell in love with the heifer.” He also complimented her shoulder

set and overall style adding, “She’s going to go on to make a really nice cow.” Thirteen-year-old Bobbi Jean Frazier of Ocala, Florida was ecstatic to bring home the first Grand Champion title for the state of Florida. “I have to say I have had a great first All American! I have been truly blessed to be able to do what I have done.” In addition to winning Grand Champion Red Brahman female, Bobbi Jean also won three highly competitive cattle classes. Kelvin Moreno of Moreno Ranches, was pleased with the results of the show saying, “This achievement solidifies the hard work we have put into advancing Brahman genetics through our innovative embryo program. We are honored to have produced the Grand Champion Red Brahman female at the All American and to represent the state of Florida in this historic win.”
