President’s Message

I hope everyone has had a good summer. If you didn’t make it to the National Junior Show and Open Show, you missed an outstanding group of cattle. Our Juniors are an amazing group of young adults. The steer carcass evaluation program is coming to an end and the bulls for the annual sale are on feed. I hope everyone is making plans to attend the Annual Meeting, at the Best Western, Bastrop Lost Pines, and the Sale at Hills Prairie Auction, Bastrop, Texas. The Annual Meeting will be held on Friday September 20th at the hotel. Meal reservations forms have been mailed, please complete and return to our office in Dripping Springs, there is no charge for the meal, but the caterer does need a head count. The Sale will be on Saturday the 21st. Chris Shivers, Infinity Cattle Services, is our Sale Manager and John Banken is assisting. You will find more information on both the hotel and sale in this edition.

We attended several cattle conventions promoting our cattle and our association. Thank you Ken Elaine Monaghan, Peterson for attending Ft. Worth and ARBA president Michele Hanson for attending both Ft. Worth and San Marcos. In closing I would like to say, thank you for the past thirty plus years. When I came to work for the association James Puerta, told me don’t look at it as a job, look at it as a journey. It has been one incredible journey, we have been through so much together. Serving as your president has been an honor. Thank you to all the Board members and committee chairmen for your countless hours serving our members. I also want to say a very special thank you to Michele Hanson for all her hard work and dedication. God truly blessed me when he brought me to The American Red Brangus Association.

Cattlemen’s Capital Update: Provided by the United States Cattlemen’s Association In February 2018, the United States Cattlemen’s Association (USCA) submitted a petition for rulemaking to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service asking that the terms “meat” and “beef” be reserved exclusively for products derived from the flesh of an animal. Cited by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) leadership as the catalyst for the current industry discussion, the petition kickstarted the national debate on what constitutes a “meat” product. In 2018, USCA members testified at two public hearings hosted by both the FDA and USDA on our labeling concerns. At one of these hearings, Maggie Nutter of Sweetwater, Montana testified: “When other products use the term meat or beef they are taking advantage of the years of hard work the Beef CheckOff program has put in building beef’s good reputation. They are hijacking our

6

American Red Brangus Journal — Fall 2019

trademark branding for the benefit of their own marketing. As ranchers, we don’t want anything that isn’t beef to be called beef or to use terms connected to meat.” Because of the efforts of our policy committee members, in late 2018, FDA and USDA announced they reached an agreement to jointly oversee the regulation of cell-cultured food products from cell lines of livestock and poultry. This meant that FDA will oversee cell collection, cell banks, and cell growth and differentiation, while USDA will then oversee the post-harvest production and labeling of food products derived from the cells of livestock and poultry. However, under the formal agreement, it appears that USDA FSIS will issue the USDA meat inspection stamp to be used on these products. We raised strong concerns with the agency on the utilization of any of the three purple-inked USDA meat inspection stamps for cell-cultured

product. A new stamp should be created for cell-cultured products that is inspected by USDA and by state inspection agencies, using a different format and color ink on the stamp. Neither the Federal or State meat inspection stamps should appear on the cell-cultured protein products, retail packaging or wholesale containers. In the states, we’re seeing momentum around legislation that would bar protein alternative companies from mislabeling their products as “beef” or “meat”. It is now a crime in Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, and South Dakota to label a product as “meat” if it did not come from an animal product. In five states (AL, SC, MT, OK, WY), it is now a crime to misrepresent cell-cultured food products as “meat”. Other states have introduced truth in labeling legislation, including Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, North Dakota, Kentucky, Nebraska, New Mexico, Texas, Tennessee, Vermont, and Washington. Only three states outright defeated such legislation – Arizona, Colorado, and Virginia. As a grassroots organization, we depend on producers like YOU to serve as leaders of our industry. Our leadership maintain ranching operations of their own – giving our organization firsthand knowledge of what it takes to be profitable in the 21st century cattle industry. USCA’s full-time D.C. presence ensures producers’ voices are at the forefront of every conversation. We remain unwavering in our main policy priority: strengthening the bottom line of the U.S. cattle producer. 2019 ARBA Performance Bull Test Update

T

he 2019 American Red Brangus Association Performance Tested Bull Program started in January when the bulls were delivered to Graham Land & Cattle in Gonzales, Texas. This inaugural program consists of six bulls from three breeders in Mississippi & Texas. The bulls were given a warm-up period before being weighed onto the test, carcass ultrasounded and give a disposition score on May 16. The following is the information on the bulls collected to date:

• • • • • •

In Weight: 569 lbs. Temperment Score: 2 (1-gentlest, 5 aggressive) On Test/Scan Weight: 899 lbs. Intramuscular Fat (Marbling): 3.83% Ribeye Area: 9.98 sq. in. / 1.1 sq. in. per carcass weight Rump Fat: .26 inches

The bulls will be weighed off of test, hip heighted and given a Breeding Soundness Exam the middle of August. The bulls that pass the requirements will be pictured and prepared for the ARBA National Sale on September 21. This inaugural program has provided a wealth of information to the participating breeders. In addition to this great data collection effort the ARBA will be able to offer bulls with information to cattleman at the upcoming sale. The ARBA will again hold a Performance Bull Test in 2020. This program is for bulls born from the Fall of 2018 – Spring of 2019. Information and nomination forms can be downloaded from the ARBA website: americanredbrangus.org.

ARBA Members Collect Data to

Prove Carcass Value T

he role of seedstock cattle producers is to breed animals that can be utilized in the commercial beef industry to produce an efficient and quality product. Recently ARBA Members made an assertive effort to learn more about the genetics in their herds and how they meet the industry goals. Fifty-one ARBA Registered Red Brangus steers were recently fed in a commercial feedyard and harvested with impressive results. The results were: It is often said, “you can’t manage what you can’t measure”. This certainly holds true! For years ARBA members have been confident that their cattle would perform on the rail as in the pasture but until such data was collected it was hard to prove. Not only did this group of steers perform well but the ARBA National Carcass Evaluation is under way and will • Hot Carcass Weight: 869 lbs. continue to provide an opportunity for members to learn more • Dressing Percentage: 63.6% about the performance of their genetics. Red Brangus Improve Your Bottom Line :: DISPOSITION Temperament is an important factor in the cattle business. Red Brangus have proven to be docile and easy to handle on foot, horseback, or with a vehicle.

:: CALVING EASE Red Brangus calves hit the ground weighing 70 to 75 pounds. Of course, this varies depending on the environment. Their growth is quick, often surpassing most contemporaries.

:: HARDINESS Red Brangus have the innate ability to thrive in a variety of climates. Red Brangus are solid red and naturally heat tolerant, with resistance to diseases. The eye pigmentation of Red Brangus virtually eliminates pinkeye and eye cancer. Reports from the feedlot operators claim that Red Brangus are healthier and hardier in the lot, resulting in faster weight gains and more profitable feeding.

:: MILKING ABILITY Commercial and registered breeders often praise the high volume of milk that Red Brangus females produce. They exhibit well formed udders and have no problem with sunburning due to their skin pigmentation. The high milking ability is even passed on to half-bloods retained as replacement females.

:: PREDICTABILITY Red Brangus have earned the reputation of producing a large percentage of solid red or red baldfaced, polled calves when mated to commercial cows. This creates uniformity at market time and eliminates the need to spend the money and time to dehorn. :: VERSATILITY Red Brangus offer both commercial and seedstock producers a variety of production and marketing options. Heifer calves stand right beside their steer mates with tremendous post weaning performance in the feedyard, or they can be marketed as topnotch replacement females. :: LONGEVITY Typically Red Brangus bulls are in service through the age of 12, while cows are still producing well beyond the age of 14. History has proven that Red Brangus live and produce at least two years longer than British or Continental breeds. :: EARLY MATURITY Red Brangus bulls mature early and can go into light service well before two years of age. Most heifers can be bred at 12 to 14 months of age, producing their first calves before their second birthday. Typically Red Brangus females have less than a 12-month calving interval.

:: HIGH PERFORMANCE Red Brangus cross well with many breeds. Most combinations result in maximum hybrid vigor. Selection for high performing bloodlines can produce an extra 100 pounds per calf. The weight gaining ability is exhibited through the yearling stage. Feeders and branded beef programs such as Nolan Ryan’s All Natural Tender Aged Beef seek out Red Brangus cross calves due to profitability. :: SIZE The ability of Red Brangus to yield high weaning and yearling weights with moderate frame size is a big bonus for cattlemen. Mature Red Brangus bulls typically weigh in at 1,800 to 2,000 pounds, while females weigh 1,000 to 1,200 pounds in range condition. :: MARKETABILITY Records show that Red Brangus Sired Calves continue to top national markets and commercial cattlemen have consistently received top dollar at local auctions. Packers desire the manageable size of their carcasses and consumers demand the Yield Grade 2, USDA Choice carcass that Red Brangus consistently produces. Red Brangus is documented as the breed yielding more Certified Meat Sires than any other American breed.

Cattlemax Offers ARBA Online Registration Interface Cattlemax, an online record keeping service, has recently unveiled an interface where American Red Brangus Association Members can now submit registrations online. Many ARBA Members currently utilize Cattlemax to maintain their records. In September the ARBA announced the capability of downloading herd inventories to update the Cattlemax system preventing hours of data entry. This herd download is currently free to Active ARBA Members and can be obtained by contacting the ARBA Office with your membership number. Members can also receive updates periodically as new EPD’s are released or other updates are

made to the animal files. Due to many ARBA Members utilizing this program the next step was to coordinate with ABRA (Kansas City) and Cattlemax to allow ARBA Members to submit registrations online straight from their Cattlemax program. For a tutorial and to learn more about the entire process of receiving a herd download and submitting online registrations view: https://help.cattlemax.com/ article/425-american-red-brangus-association. ••• If you have any questions you can contact the ARBA Office in Kansas City at 816-595-2444 or Cattlemax at 979-216-9565.

Fall 2019 — American Red Brangus Journal 21

A Note from the Junior President Bonjour (Hello), My name is Brett King and I am extremely thankful for the honor to be reelected as President of the American Junior Red Brangus Association. I was reelected at the past 2019 AJRBA Show in June. My family has been in Red Brangus for 4 generations. I live in Creole, Louisiana. What another great show in the great town of Bryan, Texas! The show was a huge success. I had an awesome time catching up with old friends and meeting many new ones. The competitions challenged our abilities in displaying cattle, public speaking, recognize farm equipment and tools, and most importantly knowledge of the breed. The show was a fun time and a great learning experience for myself as well as everyone else. I would like to congratulate all of the winners and thank everyone for participating in all of the contests. As many of you all know our Red Brangus cattle are the original heat tolerant breed of cattle which is important during this major heat wave we are having. They are known for having good fleshing and having a docile temperament. They are also good mothers with high milk quality and have low birth weights and high weaning weights. Red Brangus are also very disease resistant. I would like to give a special thanks to last year’s officers for such a great year. I would also like to thank the American Red Brangus President, Ms. Elaine Monaghan, for all the advice and effort she put forth to help make the AJRBA better. I can’t wait to work with the newly elected officers this year as well as the junior directors.

Brett King, AJRBA president

Red Brangus — How They Were Developed by Jody Butterfield

I

t took considerable insight back in the early 1940s to foresee that crossbreeding with a little ear was going to be the wave of the future and Malcolm Levi of Spicewood, Texas, was a man who had it. He’d been born, married and had started raising a family in Pennsylvania when he decided to leave the East and head west to Texas to get into the cattle business. In 1936 he bought the Paleface Ranch, named after the Hereford cattle that had traditionally been run on it. A group of sorry looking Brahman cross cows were included in the purchase and Malcolm bought a small registered Hereford herd as well. His first calf crop taught him a few things. The Hereford cows which had gotten all the attention and the best pastures produced calves that weighed 400 lb. and brought five cents/lb. But the Brahman cross cows that had been put out in a back pasture with an old cross bull and had received no attention produced calves that weighed 500 lb. and still brought five cents. He hadn’t been in the

22 American Red Brangus Journal — Fall 2019

business long enough to be prejudiced and so then and there he decided to go with the Brahman crosses. He experimented with Angus, Shorthorn and Hereford crosses and decided the Angus cross was best. By the early 1940s Malcolm was producing both black and Red Brangus cattle, the “reds” being offspring of black Angus cows and white Brahman bulls. He pulled the reds out and created a separate herd because there were several advantages to their red color that had future promise. The most obvious one was their use in crossbreeding programs on Hereford cows. Back then the little bit of ear didn’t mean much to anyone, but he’d seen for himself what it could do and he also saw that the red coloring would remove the problems of pink eye, cancer eye and still give a pretty uniform looking calf crop. He sold the last of his “blacks” in 1957 and in 1959 with his son, Mike, helped to form the American Red Brangus Association.

A Note from the AJRBA Chairman Dear Red Brangus Family, I was honored to be appointed as your Junior Committee Chairman in June. Red Brangus have been a part of my life since I was a little girl and my husband and I own Happy Ridge Red Brangus in Creole, LA. We have two boys that are learning to carry on the family tradition of raising and showing Red Brangus cattle. My committee members (Scott Brooks, Shanna Dreibrodt, Todd Mascheck, Bobby Schick and Trevor Reifel) and I are already working hard to plan the 2020 National Junior Show. We are excited to bring old traditions together with new ideas for our Juniors. The Juniors are the future of our breed and are so important to its continuing success. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those that sponsored and made donations to the 2019 Junior show. The show depends on donations and sponsorships and without your generosity the show would not be possible. I look forward to working with our National Junior Board of Directors to make our Junior show the best it can be! Good luck to all of the Juniors as they embark on next season’s shows. If you have any questions concerning the Junior Program please don’t hesitate to contact me at ajrbainfo@gmail.com or 337-912-9860. Again, thank you for this amazing opportunity! AJRBA Committee Chairman, Courtnie King
