UPI’S ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING DESIGN BRINGS ATTENTION TO THE CAMPUS’S CONCENTRATION IN BIOPHILIC DESIGN TO PROMOTE THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY’S NEED FOR MORE OXYGEN IN THE ENVIRONMENT BY SPECIFYING EXTERIOR FIXTURES THAT HIGHLIGHT THE SCHOOL’S TERRAIN AND PROVIDE THE NESSESARY LIGHTING LEVELS FOR NIGHTTIME NAVIGATION.

The campus’s landscape design give students a sense of community and connectivity with new places to congregate while engaging in a revitalized environment; but once students are guided by navigational lighting systems to the central performance hall, they are no longer bound by the weight of their surroundings, but can take flight with their new potential. The Sky is Their Limit.

Through the use, placement, and dynamic effects of exterior/ interior lighting systems, UPI’s Lighting Design naturally integrates and highlights the campus’s terrain, as well as connects the dispersed buildings throughout the institution to its central location in the performance hall to create an uplifting place where the arts are a catalyst for engagement, inspiration, and discovery.

Exterior Circulation - Canopy Roof

IMPLEMENTED RESEARCH Research shows that various combinations of color, distribution, and intensity within flexible dynamic lighting systems can enhance, as well as reduce the perceived atmosphere, enabling these systems to accommodate and complement any production performing within an institute. This knowledge can create a useful link between conceptual lighting design (within the stage and throughout the entire campus) and the proposed scenic concept of the performance for students practicing in the field of architectural and stage lighting design.

LT1.09

UPI’s lighting design draws inspiration from these natural variations in landscape and climate by employing a large canopy roof over the circulation around the Performance Hall that creates a luminous environment to invite users and visitors into the complex.

Light affects every aspect of the visual arts; therefore, it is vital that all students within a performing arts institution understand its qualities and/or have a clear understanding of controlled light in an atmosphere.

The collaboration among students within technical, theatrical, or any other fields of study within the department of fine arts is crucial for design projects that relate to a performance center or stage production.
