SLAITHWAITE COMMUNITY CENTRE PRESENTS SLAITHWAITE ART FESTIVAL 2017

PROGRAMME PAGE 3

Welcome to Slaithwaite Art Festival 2017 The Colne Valley has an abundance of artistic talent, and Slaithwaite Community Association are proud to be launching this event, in conjunction with Globe Arts Studio, at Slaithwaite’s very own Community Centre. For generations now, Slathwaite Community Centre has provided a home for many community groups and events. There can be few local people who have not attended a children’s group, workshop, or danced, sung or played at the Centre. Volunteers work hard to ensure that the venue is kept open making Slaithwaite Community Centre a community asset we can be really proud of. Enormous thanks must be extended to all the groups and individuals who have worked so hard to inspire and organise Slaithwaite Art Festival, as well as the community groups and local businesses who have supported and promoted the event. Major collaborators ByteBack Creative deserve special thanks for their work on producing the beautiful publicity material as well as their guiding organisational hand, and of course a huge thank you to all the local artists who have enthusiastically jumped on board and will be exhibiting their work. We hope you will enjoy celebrating the creativity of our special part of Yorkshire. Helen Coxan, Chair On behalf of Slaithwaite Community Association

sylvi.gibbs I  make collages from worsted cloth recycled from Schofield and Smith’s mill in Slaithwaite. The mill was burnt down in 2012. The patterns and colours of the cloth have a subtle beauty. They speak of the valleys and hillsides around here.

I paint mostly in oils and watercolours. Watercolour appeals to me because of its immediacy of use and the luminosity of its colours, but when painting outdoors I prefer to use oils. The oil paintings in this exhibition were painted en plein air in one session.

My work is inspired by the natural environment of woodlands and wild plants, gardens and land and seascape. I take a sketch book wherever I am walking and make watercolour sketches, drawings and notes which are the starting point for hand made prints.

Jane’s love of flowers and gardening has led her to work closely with the lovely specimens that catch her eye. This has resulted in the development of some fine botanical work. She is constantly honing her skills as she works in her studio at the end of the village - Slawit Studio.

Gallery and Stalls

Forty artists from across our region have come together to exhibit their work in our gallery space and stalls. This is a fabulous opportunity to discover the abundance of local talent we have right here on our doorstep.

Slaithwaite Art Festival & Sheer Brilliance Children’s Art Exhibition 2017

Opportunities to celebrate the creativity of young people in the visual arts are scarce, and so Slaithwaite Art Festival and Globe Arts Education have come together to create two fabulous events! A Children’s Art Exhibition, brought together from Slaithwaite schools, will be held at Slaithwaite Community Centre as part of the SAF celebrations. This work will then move on to join the wider Sheer Brilliance Children’s Art Exhibition 2017 held at Globe Arts Studio from the 25th May to 2nd June. The Sheer Brilliance exhibition is held in conjunction with the Yorkshire Sculpture Park National Education Archive of Children’s Art and the University of Huddersfield. Certificates and prizes will be presented at both events and all children entering art work are invited, along with their parents, teachers and friends, to come and visit the exhibitions.
