LETTER FROM THE EDITOR:

The summer weather is finally with us and I hope that you have enjoyed the long warm days of June and avoided being completely drenched by the occasional thunderstorm. We have lots of interesting articles in this July edition. Sally shares her experiences of taking up scuba diving – an interesting read which illustrates how satisfying and exhilarating being involved in such an activity can be and how it improves you as a person. Georgia Rose’s passion is totally different but equally rewarding. This month, she tells us about her love of writing books and how the process has changed for her over time. Find out what the ‘Healing Walk’ is by reading Hazel’s latest flash fiction piece. Making Me explains how happiness is just around the corner – good news indeed. I’m still moping around after my team Leeds United have been relegated to the Championship. However, you can read Penny’s celebration of her team Luton Town’s fantastic achievement of gaining promotion to the Premier League. Look out too for the regular offerings from Lee’s Garden, Inn Farm Nursery and Canine Corner. And as I say every Month – we have much more besides!

And rest… Recovery after exercise and why it’s important

Recovery is an essential part of any exercise routine. It has a big impact on your fitness gains and it’s essential to muscle and tissue repair. Whether you’re a regular gym bunny or new to limbering up, here’s how to rest up post-workout, and get the most out of your muscles:

1. Replace lost fluids

You lose a lot of water and important electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium, when you exercise, especially when you work up a sweat. Sweat keeps us cool but your body temperature will rise if you don’t replenish lost fluids. You also need to stay hydrated so as to flush out waste and toxins. Ideally, you should replace lost fluids during exercise, especially endurance exercise, and always top up once you’ve finished.

2. Work out then cool down

Cooling down at a much reduced intensity for around 10 minutes after exercise, helps your heart rate and blood flow return to normal. This could involve easy, gentle movement such as a run into a jog, or hopping from strength training into a yoga class. Stretching is also really important and can help to improve mobility and flexibility. It also makes us feel better, providing a sense of relief and release, and brings blood flow into your muscles, making you feel relaxed.

3. Eat to build muscle

What you eat post-workout can influence your recovery. Your body’s preferred fuel source is glycogen. When you exercise, your muscles use up their glycogen stores. Proteins in your muscles can also be broken down and damaged. Once you’ve finished exercising your body tries to rebuild its glycogen stores and repair (and regrow) damaged muscle proteins. Eating the right nutrients soon after you exercise can help your body do this faster. Carbs and protein are especially good at getting this done.

4.Rest and relax

A muscle needs anywhere from 24 to 48 hours to repair and rebuild, and working it again too soon simply leads to tissue breakdown instead of building. Rest is one of the best ways to recover and heal from just about any illness or injury and this is also true of exercise. Resting after intense exercise allows the repair and recovery process to happen at a natural pace. Sufficient sleep is essential; our body does much of its repair work when we sleep.

Need a helping hand?

Sore or tired muscles? A popular choice for muscle and joint pain is Devil’s Claw, a plant only found in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa. It has been used for many years to help reduce rheumatic, muscle and joint pain and studies suggest that long-term use of Devil’s Claw is not only safe, but may also lead to improvements in those with chronic lower back pain. Try Atrosan Devil’s Claw tablets (from www.avogel.co.uk).

For topical relief from inflammation you may wish to try Arnica. Arnica is well-known for its homeopathic use for bumps and bruises, but when used in its herbal form it can also help with pain and stiffness in joints and muscles, with research showing it may be just as effective as ibuprofen at reducing pain and stiffness in the fingers of osteoarthritis patients. Atrogel Arnica Gel (from www.avogel.co.uk) contains herbal extracts of Arnica flowers and can help with muscular aches, pains and stiffness, sprains and bruising.

LOCAL MEMORIES:

Luton Town Football Club are Back

If you will forgive me for taking a small break from the story of Charles and Lucy, to mark the momentous occasion of Luton Town Football Club, against all the odds, finally making it back to the pinnacle of football – the Premier League.

No one would be happier than my dad, Claude, sitting up there on his cloud, draped in an orange and navy scarf, wooden rattle (pigeon scarer) in his hand, cheering on the Loo-un, yes we even pronounced it that way!

This was my first experience of football, being taken to Kenilworth Road, every other Saturday back in the late 60’s early 70’s. Malcolm Macdonald was their star striker, that bow-legged, gap-toothed colossus of a number nine, a prolific goal scorer and my first schoolgirl crush! Many years later, I was running a pub in Cotton End and one of our regulars was good friends with ‘Super Mac’ and one night he brought him into our pub, and I got to have my photo taken with him – swoon!

Around the same time, Dad and his best mate, Roger Dunkley, landlord of the White Horse at Tilbrook, were frequently invited to night games at LTFC – a cousin of Dad’s was a director, and they were hosted in the Directors box, where, always propping up the end of the bar, pipe in hand, was fellow Director, Eric Morecombe, a staunch Luton supporter. Who can ever forget that memorable Morecombe and Wise sketch with Glenda Jackson as Cleopatra, and Eric Morecombe, as a roman legion, dressed in a toga carrying a board with Luton Town F.C. in flashing lights on the reverse!

Sunday lunches with Mum and Dad always saw me and Dad discussing the previous day’s games, usually with Mum rolling her eyes! Dad’s Club now was Liverpool and mine was Arsenal – I had followed Malcolm Macdonald when he went to Arsenal and have stayed a ‘Gooner’ ever since; but we still had a soft spot for our first love – Luton Town. I would say to Dad – did you see the crowd yesterday at Luton – it might have been, say 10,000 – which, for the league they were in at the time, was massive. Dad would say – “That is nothing, I was there one night back in the 1950’s for a F.A.Cup replay against Spurs and there were 45,000 there”. I think that might have been something of an exaggeration – but they were a magic club, in that tumbledown old ground, which was tumbledown even back then!

Fast forward quite a few years and I was a Council Member on the Bedfordshire Football Association, serving all in all for 15 years or so, until I moved out of the County and back to Kimbolton. I always remember being very impressed that at the AGM every year, Luton Town Football Club, Bedfordshire’s most senior football club,

16 To advertise in Village Bystander please call Julie on 07928 778457

always sent a representative to the meeting. They did not need to, attendance was not compulsory, many other local teams did not bother attending or even sending apologies, but Luton did things right and showed respect to their affiliated county.

Sadly, the early 2000’s saw things going wrong off the pitch for Luton – yes – they had gone back to grass by then, after a flirtation with a plastic pitch in the mid 80’s –early 90’s. Financial mismanagement and administration saw a 10 point deduction and inevitably relegation followed. More financial woes – another administration and a 20 point deduction. Finally in 2009 the Football Association hit Luton with an unprecedented 30 point deduction and this, unsurprisingly, proved unsurmountable and Luton Town dropped out of the football league into non-league football.

I remember my dad being absolutely incandescent with rage, at the total injustice of it. For quite some time he spoke of nothing else, to anybody who would listen (including Mum and she hated football!) and we became avid Luton Town supporters again. We followed their five year struggle to get back into the football league and felt such unbridled joy when they finally made it.

About four years ago I took my eldest grandson (then aged 10) to Kenilworth Road. We caught the train from Bedford to Luton and walked from the station to the ground. My grandson who is used to the grandeur of White Hart Lane, was somewhat surprised at the almost derelict ground, but his spirits soon soared when he realised that we were in the noisy, singing part of the ground with songs and language which would make your hair curl! After a while I gave up putting my hands over his ears and shrugged as he joined in the singing! He raced down to front when Luton scored, and I knew we had another ‘Hatter’ in the family.

At Edward’s school, he tells me, it is popular for the boys to support unfashionable clubs and right up until now – Luton Town exactly fitted that bill – but I think this special club will have won over new fans, perhaps from all over the country, following the telling of their history and the play-off exploits.

So now ‘The Kenny’ (Kenilworth Road) will host the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United and the Premiership Champions, Manchester City, who perhaps will not want to be reminded of the time in 1983 (40 years ago), when Luton beat City 1-0 at Maine Road to avoid relegation from the top tier, and who could ever forget David Pleat galloping onto the pitch in his beige suit, arms aloft in celebration.

Come on you Hatters – welcome back to the big time!

Breathe Easy

The first rule of dive club is keep breathing. The second rule of dive club is regularly check and maintain your equipment; ensure it’s safe and environment-appropriate to use. The third rule of dive club is stay close to your buddy, especially in poor visibility. The fourth rule is know and don’t exceed your limits – practise safe diving. The fifth ‘rule’ is have fun. I’m paraphrasing somewhat. But those are the main things to keep in mind while scuba diving.

I learned to dive eight years ago while travelling and was lucky enough to volunteer for a dive centre in Cairns that chartered one liveaboard and two day-boats to provide tourists with outstanding diving out on the Great Barrier Reef. It started out as a ‘mission to overcome’ so to speak, as due to some poor visibility while in the UK, I’d become a little too water-averse. The adventurer in me was at odds with the introvert reluctant to dive into unchartered territory.

When I did conquer my fear of open water it wasn’t just liberating, it felt empowering too. Doors opened and I was awash with belief. I had envied the students on the open water course who cruised through the necessary skills with no qualms; however, when it came to working on the liveaboard and there was the odd passenger with a wobble in confidence, it seemed appropriate that I could be helpful in assuring them that I’d been in the same boat! (Geddit?!) All it took was a bit more experience in the water and some encouragement.

When I returned to the UK, wreck dives sparked my interest and in particular the HMS M2 submarine, sitting 32m down off the coast of Dorset, in Lyme Bay. Built and launched during WWI, she unfortunately sank during a training exercise in 1932. It’s thought that the crew were so keen to beat their record time to rise to the surface and launch their aircraft that the hangar door was opened prematurely on the surface while the deck was still awash, causing the hangar to flood. Her demise prompted the Royal Navy to abandon submarine-launched aircraft.

Now I’m kitted finally up with the right gear and have booked onto a trip to dive the M2 this summer. The deep dive course to enable me to dive past 30m brought with it an unexpected and unwelcome hazard. Due to the temperature of the water being so cold (below 10 degrees Celsius) my regulator (and two other divers’ regulators) froze, causing a free-flow at 29-30m on our way back up from a 33.5m dive. At the time, I could hear air gushing at speed, could see endless bubbles, and couldn’t breathe normally through my regulators. So seeing as I hadn’t experienced this malfunction, and we were so deep down, I started to panic. Thankfully all divers were okay, albeit a little annoyed, however, it’s a reminder of the necessity of keeping on top of equipment and preparing for more challenging conditions that might arise.

Between the first (less eventful) dive of the course that morning and the second (the free-flow), I’d pondered whether I’d feel confident in the event of an equipment malfunction or emergency of any sort as it had been so long since my training. The next dive resembled an eery mixture of “be careful what you wish for” and “here’s some of that extra experience in the water for you”. My love of scuba diving hasn’t ebbed as a result; if anything, it’s a way to keep overcoming challenges while exploring the planet’s beautiful marine world.

Lee’s Gardening Corner

July is normally the peak flowering time in most gardens, with perennials and bedding plants blooming away, pots and containers should be looking their best. Keep them at it by regular watering and feeding, especially if it’s still been as dry as June was.

Raise the blades on the mower and avoid watering it unless it's a new lawn, it does t need cutting quite so low during the summer. Deadhead roses, perennials (such as lupins and delphiniums) and the bedding plants. Prune spring flowering shrubs including wisteria and philadelphus, softwood cuttings can also be taken from shrubs now.

In the vegetable garden harvest as soon as they are ready as they go over if not picked, although root crops will last in the ground. Keep veg well watered and continue to sow carrots, peas, radishes and lettuce. If you have a greenhouse make sure it is ventilated during warm days, keep watering and feeding.

There are many beautiful plants around this time of year, but lilies, penstemons, lavenders and fuchsias are excellent.

The Healing Walk

Yvonne and her 40-year-old daughter, Rebecca, got out of the car. It was only 9.20am, but the sun was already hot. Yvonne grappled with a parking app to put 3 hours parking on the car, and the two of them made their way to where the ‘Pink Army’ were gathered.

This was a ‘Race for Life’ event – the annual fundraiser organised by Cancer Research. Yvonne and Rebecca had done this walk together for many years. They always walked 10k and usually did the event held at Milton Keynes. They liked the pretty walk around Willen Lake, which also afforded some shade in hot weather.

Often, in previous years, Yvonne and Rebecca had met up for a few ‘practice’ walks prior to the day. This year, however, had not been a good year, and they had both only just made it to the event. A profound sadness that affected the whole family sat on their shoulders like a dark cloud.

Yvonne had also been ill in the week leading up to Race for Life. Her physical body had just seemed to ‘give up’. She had experienced searing abdominal pains, and her whole body had become covered in a terrible rash, that was itchy and blistered. Her GP could find no underlying physical cause and, after a good chat with Yvonne, had put it down to emotional stress. ‘No surprise there’, thought Yvonne.

Yvonne and Rebecca pinned on their race numbers and back signs, and took their places at the start line. As usual, Yvonne read some of the signs pinned to backs in front of her, sharing motivations for doing the event. Yvonne always found them very moving, but this year tears flowed, as she realised so many people were going through difficult times.

Yvonne and Rebecca crossed the start line, and for two hours they walked and talked as if they were in a bubble, separated from the rest of the world. They shared their sadness and cried together. They pledged their love and their support for each other. Each minute helped them more and more to come to terms with their pain. Sometimes, as Yvonne slowed her pace due to the heat and still not feeling completely well, other walkers overtook them, and Yvonne then became very aware that she and her daughter were a part of this huge group brought together because there was pain of one sort or another in all of their lives.

By the time they crossed the finishing line, Yvonne was hot and tired, but felt so much better. She had made it round the course and had raised some money for a very good cause. Most of all, though, she felt that the two hours of precious time with her daughter had started the healing process.

As they made their way back to the car, Yvonne smiled for the first time in weeks. From now on, in her head, ‘Race for Life’ would be renamed ‘The Healing Walk’.

FINANCIAL WORRIES

Unfortunately, many companies have taken on extra borrowing due to the lack of sales during and after Covid. So now these companies are having to pay much more in repayments, on top of a higher payroll cost.

With inflation not coming down as quickly as expected, interest rates still going up, and mortgage rates back on the climb, it’s now a good time to review your finances.

I’m sure the older generation can remember when mortgage rates were in double figures, but for those with mortgages taken out in the last ten years, these new rates are going to hit hard.

Some standard size mortgage payments are going up £400£800 per month. Compared to the rates we paid, they seem low, but the amount borrowed today is so much higher.

Many landlords are reviewing their buy-to-let mortgages and are now selling because the rent just doesn’t cover the new loan repayments.

Companies also need to look at their structure, as well as individuals And I am starting to talk to business owners about this concern. Whilst I am finding the demand for this to be low at the moment, it is expected to increase.

Companies, just like individuals, need to take advice early and not wait until it becomes an emergency.

Poor stock market valuations have also curbed the growth expectations and indeed many individuals have seen no growth for a few years.

High inflation, interest rates, and loan repayments –coupled with a lack of investment growth, has lead to many having to review their financial goals and objectives.

My colleagues and I are now helping individuals, and companies, regarding the changes needed to their financial plan and/or investment strategy, which incorporates our in-house investment team.

If you are worrying about your financial plan, talk to one of our Chartered and Certified advisers.

Be a Medal Winner

Paul Kinally of Peter Lane & Partners looks at a key feature homebuyers are adding to their wish lists this year.

Many of those who saw the Chelsea Flower Show featured on TV recently, or better still attended the annual event in person, would have been struck by the more natural turn garden designers have taken this year. Not only that but considerable time and skill were given to smaller multi-use plots and even balconies - in some cases only deep enough for chair. The creativity was as spectacular as it was beautiful.

While there was the usual heavy lifting of giant boulders for rushing mountain streams and huge established trees for shade and drama in the show gardens, attention by the designers was also given to intimate city and even industrial landscapes. Weeds, for once, were encouraged.

Garden designers understand public taste only too well, and so do estate agents. Since the start of the pandemic, the importance of outdoor space has been rising in the minds of home buyers, whether it is for the horticulturally minded or for those who demand a deck with room for eating, relaxing and barbecuing. Outdoor entertaining in our warming climate is very much in.

There was a time years ago when a good kitchen would sell a house. Then it was well-planned kitchens and bathrooms. More recently it has been open plan ground floor living. But now outdoor spaces are very much the thing. A property’s exterior has become almost as important as its interior. It doesn’t matter how small or large the area is as long as the most has been made of it.

So if you are getting your property ready to sell you should of course focus on the interior, but don’t forget the outside relaxing area. Our advice is to channel your inner Monty Don and make the most of your garden, terrace or balcony. With the increasing importance of outside space to buyers, not doing so could lose you a gold medal of a deal.

If you would like to discuss any of the above, or if you are thinking of moving, contact Paul Kinally on 01480 860400 or paul.kinally@peterlane.co.uk

Canine Corner - Why do dogs bury things?

Most dog owners will, at some point, discover an item of food carefully stashed away by their dog. This might be a few pieces of kibble under a sofa cushion, or if they are really lucky, a pig’s ear under their pillow. I once discovered a jacket potato in my bed (!) Have you ever wondered why your dog will excavate your garden to bury a chew instead of eating it then and there? This month, we will look at why dogs bury things and find out if there is anything you can do about it.

Hiding food is known as ‘caching’ and it is very instinctive. The ancestors of our dogs were hunters and scavengers. They would eat what they could from a carcass and save the rest for later. They did not know when their next meal would be, so it made sense to bury it so they could come back to it when needed. By burying their food, they reduced the chances of other animals stealing it. The cool temperature underground would also help to stop the meat from spoiling. Domestic dogs may bury their food if they don’t want to eat it right away but want to stop other dogs from finding it. If your dog is not hungry he may carry his chew around and make a crying or whining noise, before finding somewhere to bury it. Sometimes if a dog is too stressed to eat, he may bury his food with the intention of eating it when he feels safer. Burying may involve digging holes in the garden, or pushing food items under cushions or into the corners of a room. Some dogs will even drag blankets over their food bowl to hide it. Dogs are more likely to hide high-value food items. So they might eat their usual kibble straight away, but will bury treats and chews to save for later. It is likely that they recognise the higher nutritional value of some foods through taste and smell, and instinct tells them to save them for when they are really needed. It might simply be that your dog is not hungry when you give him a treat, so he decides to keep it safe until he wants to eat it.

The survival value of burying food is obvious, but why do dogs bury things that are not edible? Some dogs will bury toys. Others will bury items belonging to their owners- even mobile phones and remote controls. This can be down to how strong the instinct to bury things is for that individual dog. Some dogs go through their whole lives without burying anything, others have a very strong instinct to bury high-value items. Dogs who love their toys may value them just as much as food, so want to keep them safe. Some dogs are able to work out which items are highly prized by their owners, so help them out by burying them!

Some breeds are certainly more likely to dig and/ or bury chews and toys. Terrier breeds love to dig and bury. Owners of dachshunds and beagles often report that they are serial buriers. Labradors and golden retrievers may also like to bury their favourite items and can be efficient at excavating rather large holes in the garden! Some dogs will dig holes just for the fun of it.

Caching is a normal and instinctive dog behavior and is usually nothing to worry about. However, if your dog suddenly starts to bury his food instead of eating it, it may be an indication that something isn’t quite right. If your dog has abdominal discomfort, or is stressed, this will affect his appetite and make him more likely to hide his food away. If you notice your dog burying his food more often than he used to, or if it is a new behaviour, speak to your vet for advice.

It is not easy to stop your dog from digging in your garden if he is that way inclined. The best solution is to fence off the areas you really don’t want him digging in, then give him his own digging area so that he has an outlet for his excavation instincts. This may be a patch of bare soil, or even a child’s sand pit for your dog to have fun in. Some dogs are serial diggers when young but grow out of it as they get older.

So, what does it take to write a book? Ernest Hemingway was quoted as saying, ‘There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.’ While this has also been attributed to other writers, whoever originally said it, it is true.

Driven by the passion of finding something I loved doing, I found that my first books poured out of me, so much so that I could barely keep up with the flow of words onto the screen. You can probably tell, should you decide to look at them. I never open their pages because I know I would start editing them all over again. As with many things in my life I took this torrent for granted and assumed this was the way writing was. Nowadays, the writing process feels much like dragging each word up from the depths of my soul before putting it on the page, only to move it again sometime later.

There are as many ways to get on with putting those words down as there are of putting off getting down to the work, and believe me, writers are the greatest procrastinators! Some write for X number of hours a day or aim for a daily word count, while others team up to do writing sprints. I find the most galvanising action I can do is set a deadline. Whatever your method, if you are considering writing a book the only advice I can give is this –backside on chair, fingers on keyboard. It works every time.

Carla is a book that will stay with me for a long time*. The mark of great storytelling for me is whether or not I can leave the characters whilst I’m reading, and the state of my emotions after I’ve finished the book. If I say that I read this in less than a day and I didn’t want it to end, you get the picture.

I rooted for John, I loved Carla, it made me cry and I was left feeling bereft (this is always a good thing!). The characters were wonderfully drawn and the detail of the darker aspects of John and his history so knowledgeable and assured that I trusted Barry completely. Truly brilliant writing in a style I love, and I shall definitely be reading more from this author.

*This, it turns out, is an understatement…I only have to turn to that opening page to want to read it all over again…and wish it was for the first time.

Georgia Rose is my pen name and the name I use for everything connected to my writing. You can find me at georgia@georgiarosebooks.com or www.georgiarosebooks.com.
