Lee’s Gardening Corner

July is normally the peak flowering time in most gardens, with perennials and bedding plants blooming away, pots and containers should be looking their best. Keep them at it by regular watering and feeding, especially if it’s still been as dry as June was.

Raise the blades on the mower and avoid watering it unless it's a new lawn, it does t need cutting quite so low during the summer. Deadhead roses, perennials (such as lupins and delphiniums) and the bedding plants. Prune spring flowering shrubs including wisteria and philadelphus, softwood cuttings can also be taken from shrubs now.

In the vegetable garden harvest as soon as they are ready as they go over if not picked, although root crops will last in the ground. Keep veg well watered and continue to sow carrots, peas, radishes and lettuce. If you have a greenhouse make sure it is ventilated during warm days, keep watering and feeding.

There are many beautiful plants around this time of year, but lilies, penstemons, lavenders and fuchsias are excellent.
