LIFE IS RETURNING TO THE BAY,

and this week there is a bit more happening. Whale watching is back in season and is always spectacular. Between May and November Humpback whales pass by as they head north from their Antarctic summer feeding grounds. There have been plenty of good sightings already, from Cape Byron Lighthouse and the surrounding cliffs, as well as from the viewing platform at the end of the Three Sisters walking track in Broken Head. Of course, for more up close and personal encounters there are a number of whale-watching cruises you can check out.

Tasting sessions are back at Cape Byron Distillery. Each session includes a G&T on arrival, full guided tasting of the Brookie’s range and an inside look into the distilling process. Distillery tour bookings via their website capebyrondistillery.com. Byron Theatre is launching a Stream from Home platform from Friday 12 June. To kick things off, tune into some great art movies featuring Manet, Munch, Leonardo and Vermeer. To book go to byroncentre.com.au.

WELL, ANOTHER LONG WEEKEND DONE AND DUSTED. DID YOU

have fun? To be honest, after 3 months working from home, weekends and weekdays have become merged. Office portability is very convenient, but the “always available” expectation that follows is very inconvenient. The whole concept of the “weekend” began with the industrial revolution in 19th century Britain. Originally an arrangement to allow Saturday afternoons and Sundays off, so that workers might arrive for work sober and refreshed on Monday mornings (some things never change!), the concept grew in popularity. In 1929, American trade unions initiated a five-day workweek, and the two-day weekend became the norm. By 1983 the Australian Arbitration Commission refined that 5 day, 40 hour week and rewarded us all with 38 hours, 10 public holidays, 20 days annual leave and 8 sickies – plenty of opportunity to create our precious long weekend. With so many businesses now finding demand for their services extending to seven days, it seems time for another review. An obvious solution would be an extension of job sharing policies. Every role could be performed over 7 days, with 2 employees sharing duties - 3½ days on, 3½ days off. This would provide more family time, more leisure time, more opportunities for the underemployed, and a boost to the travel and hospitality industries. Of course, there are some questions. Who funds all this extra leisure time? Would 30% less work mean 30% less wage? Surely not! If I’m going to be subject to the added expense of additional leisure time, I will actually need a pay rise. The more I’m paid, the more I can spend, and the more employment I can generate. Everyone wins - that’s trickle down economics 101. If you think this is nonsense, it turns out that smarter people than me have worked on this already. The New Economics Foundation has recommended moving to a 21 hour standard workweek. To quote them, this will address nearly all of life’s little problems - unemployment, high carbon emissions, low well-being, entrenched inequalities, overwork, family care – plus the bonus of a reduction in the rate of growth of climate change. Come on Australia - what are we waiting for? Let’s make 2020 stand for something good. Support PLEISURE - People for Leisure. Join up. Join in. Bring on the 3½ day chill out weekend. Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

AS ALWAYS BETWEEN ECLIPSES, THIS IS A

time to wrap up loose ends, let go of what has proven to be obsolete or outdated and be ready for something new. This year we have been granted an extra-long eclipse season which lasts six weeks in total, until 21st of July! Expect mixed messages and ‘smoke and mirrors’ throughout this time, especially this week and during Mercury’s retrograde sojourn, (19/6 to12/7). Right now Neptune may cause a lot of confusion! On Thursday the Sun in Gemini forms a tension-loaded square to Neptune in Pisces. It is almost impossible to see through all the lies and misinformation that we find in the media, and the process to find out what is really going on might be a long and winding road. Truth, lies, facts and deception may also be encountered in intimate relationships! Venus, the goddess of love, is retrograde in Gemini; she can be a trickster when the bad twin comes out. Who to trust might be an issue you have to deal with; this includes the question of how much you trust yourself. Ultimately you have to rely on your own gut-feeling and intuition. If you are unsure, take all the time you need to retreat, go inward and soul-search. Also on Thursday retro Venus forms a sextile to Chiron in Aries. This may inspire you to heal a relationship issue which could have been festering since mid-April. Be brave and honest, because in four weeks time Venus in direct motion will again meet up with Chiron. A Mars/Neptune conjunction is building and exact this Sunday. Mars, the warrior archetype, is emotionally hyper-charged in Pisces, thus attempting to be rational, fair or impartial is almost impossible. However, this transit may stimulate your creativity and imagination to great heights. Writing, painting, dancing and making music may be the best therapy during the weekend. If you are not so inclined, what about a long hike in nature? This may clear some brain-fog too! For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

The Prince of Disks prefers a conservative stance in dealing with day-to-day issues. He reminds you to think about all the choices available, instead of just reacting, and to stick to tried, tested and true methods in your work. With that in mind you may move mountains bit by bit…

h TAURUS

The Prince of Wands wears his heart on his sleeve; he is charming and plainly irresistible. With him by your side you are confident, daring and well equipped to rise to any challenge. Your ‘can-do’ attitude moves obstacles out of your way as quickly as they appear. This is also a great week for a creative or romantic endeavour.

i GEMINI

The 6 of Wands promises success and triumph. No matter how pleasurable this can be, the real accomplishment is creating win/win situations. With Lady Venus retrograde in your sign you need to stay honest and true to your values, rather than just going for personal gain.

j CANCER

During this potentially confusing week the 3 of Disks encourages you to plan and manage your next steps regarding business and money-making ventures carefully. How to move from doubt to certainty? Your heart must be content and aligned with your mind before you can determine right action.

BY GISELA

k LEO

c SAGITTARIUS

l VIRGO

d CAPRICORN

Leo is all for a comfortable and luxurious lifestyle, and with the 9 of Disks drawn you may be able to advance yourself in that way. This card is not so much about a sudden windfall, but more about how you can use clear, heartfelt communication, e.g. good vibes, to magnetically attract more of what you want.

The Wheel of Fortune offers opportunities, maybe even a breakthrough that may change your destiny in a very positive way. This is the week to expand your personal vision and back yourself up, in order to turn things around that have been bugging you for a long time. The insights you gain now can be lifechanging!

a LIBRA

The Knight of Cups represents loving connection, care and compassion way beyond the ego. With him by your side your ability to create harmony and brighten up other people’s lives soars to great new heights. Best of all, it makes you feel really good!

b SCORPIO

When the Tower Tarot card appears you are in for sudden changes and emotional upheaval. Your sense of security may feel threatened by chaos or crisis. If you react with strong resistance, you might just cause yourself more pain. Your best bet is to stay flexible and adapt to a new reality as soon as possible.

With the 10 of Swords drawn you may feel at a low point concerning a relationship or finances. Nothing gets resolved by continuous negative thoughts, selfdepreciation or judgement! As soon as your mind wants to go there, try to turn it around by remembering five things you are grateful for right now.

The Ace of Wands offers the great gift of unbridled power. It can be a highly creative and productive force, but if it is not funnelled into a constructive direction it can also destroy! You may feel particularly fired-up this week; use it constructively.

e AQUARIUS

The 7 of Disks symbolises selfdoubt, uncertainty and fear of failure. You might hang on to old limitations and lack a clear perspective right now. This is not the right time to make long-term decisions, but it is perfect for a vision-quest, or at least long walks in nature.

f PISCES

The Lovers Tarot card holds much wisdom about the art and craft of relationships. This week you are called to explore ways to find the perfect balance between staying heart-open, engaged and compassionate while keeping clear boundaries at the same time.

DEAR KEENWA,

I marched on the weekend to stand in solidarity with our First Nations brothers and sisters, and stand strong that Black Lives Matter. My heart breaks for all the death in custody, so I sign petitions, and post daily on social media promoting black voices, and donate money to various funds, even tiny amounts. What else can I do? - I Stand

DEAR I STAND,

If only repairing racism was Instagrammable. Contrary to the belief of some, the weekend's protest was not Splendour In The Grass, nor Coachella. If we looked in the mirror as much as we look at our screens, this important period in time instead of being a short-lived, tokenistic gesture, could be a powerful, sustainable, and lasting cultural shift that births new narratives. If we are willing to ask ourselves, how do I benefit from a system that kills others? Then working, daily on disentangling ourselves from it. To stand in solidarity is an excellent start, but the real work begins when we dare to stand in sovereignty for ourselves, and others.

DEAR KEENWA,

I'm sick of being called racist, just because of my skin colour. I'm pretty sure i'm not, because I do know a person of colour and am always nice to them. Don't white lives matter as much as black ones? The other thing is, I'm indigenous too aren't I? I was born here. Or am I just racist? - Fragile Freddy

DEAR FRAGILE FREDDY,

Touche, bro. Yes, you must be Indigenous to somewhere, (like Celtic Europe), just not here. I know being born on Indigenous land is uncomfortable, but probably not as uncomfortable as your son being killed by a policeman. Addressing white fragility, connecting with your own ancestors, whilst respecting custodianship of the land you live on is all part of healing systemic racism, which unfortunately nobody is exempt from.

This week's review

TITLE: Slowhand AUTHOR: Philip Norman NUMBER OF PAGES: 415 READING TIME: 5 hours 55 minutes PRICE: $33.99 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Slowhand is Philip Norman’s

biography of the life and music of Eric Clapton. “Slowhand” was the title of Clapton’s fifth solo album, and it is also a nickname given to him in his early days, when he would change broken guitar strings whilst still on stage – often prompting a slow hand clap from the impatient audience. Norman is an acclaimed biographer, having documented the great British music scene of the 60’s and 70’s, through the lives of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Elton John and many others. Clapton was very much a part of this world.

WHO IT'S FOR: Sex, drugs and rock & roll. There is

a voyeuristic interest in reading approved but uncensored insights into Eric Clapton’s life, as he interacts with famous friends, acquaintances, musicians and lovers, on a quest to become the greatest guitarist of all time.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Clapton was a key member of three iconic bands – The Yardbirds, Cream and Blind Faith – as well as a sometimes member of both the Beatles and the Stones. His prodigious talent saw him referred to by fans and fellow musos as “God”, but that talent came at a price. His propensity to walk out on success was legendary. His drug and alcohol intake, insatiable. His love life, turbulent. His tastes in cars and clothes, costly. His intensity, insecurity, perfectionism and narcissism are laid bare in this bio, making for inspiring and sometimes painful reading. NOTABLE QUOTES: “The next three years of what should have been the best time in his life were not just ruled by heroin but lost to it.”

ALBUM TITLE: War in My Mind ARTIST: Beth Hart RELEASED: September 2019 GENRE: Blues / Rock BIO: Beth Hart is a nearly 50, American singer,

songwriter and musician. She first came to attention in 1999 with the release of her single LA Song, and War in My Mind is Hart’s ninth solo studio album. She has also released successful collaborations with ampedup guitarists like Joe Bonamassa and Jeff Beck.

BOOKING DEADLINE - MIDNIGHT MONDAY - PUBLISHED THURSDAY

To book call 0487 003 765 or email hello@byronbazaar.com

WHAT TO EXPECT: Beth Hart has a big, bluesy voice,

and on War in My Mind we find her singing the blues like Janis Joplin, pumpin’ out the Pat Benatar rock chick, and also giving us some gospel soul, Heather Headley style. The album cover shows Hart sitting at the piano, and she can certainly tickle and tackle the ivories. The album is beautifully produced by Rob Cavallo, who uses his pop talents to inspire Hart into genres that stretch and enhance her talents.

WHAT WE LIKE: Bad Woman Blues kick starts the

album in frenetic piano, blues rock style. War in My Mind blends classical piano with angry gospel vocals. The next few tracks move through jazz, blues and gospel, before turning to the funky rock grooves of Try a Little Harder, pop rock Sister Dear and flamenco inspired Spanish Lullabies. Picture Shirley Bassey singing a James Bond title track in Rub Me for Luck, and then Sugar Shack rocks hard with 1980’s guitar riffs. Woman Down is beautifully produced, with intense piano and instrumentation, blended with Hart’s versatile vocals.

STANDOUT TRACKS: Sugar Shack, Bad Woman Blues, Woman Down.

PERFECT FOR: Hart’s powerful, lived-in blues can stir up the emotions, so pick the time and the place – and stay tuned-in till Thankful and its uplifting lyrics. LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: Melissa Etheridge, Pat Benatar.
