Cooking, watering the garden, or walking the dog can all become fun and interactive learning opportunities. How can you propagate the indoor succulent plants we featured recently? Some succulents drop plantlets. Like seeds, they take root where they fall. Remove the mini plants, place them into a potting mix recommended for cactus and succulent plants, or mix a handful of sand or perlite into potting soil. Wait a day, then water sparingly. Alternatively, try the cutting method. Just cut off a piece of leaf or stem, let it dry on a paper towel to callus off (about 5 days - the callus protects the exposed soft tissue from bacterial penetration). Keep it totally dry and watch for the growth of roots over the next few weeks. The leaf cuttings will begin to wither as they become food for the emerging new plants. Remember, succulents thrive in sunshine and well-drained soil. Without sun, they grow pale, and with too much water, they rot. Like doing a bit of trivia, puzzles or quizzes? Who doesn’t love French toast? True, it’s a calorie counters nightmare, but once a week maybe taste trumps waist! Ingredients for 2 servings: 2 large eggs, ½ cup milk, 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract, 2 thick slices of bread. Directions: Beat together egg, milk, spices and vanilla. Soak slices of bread in the egg mixture for a couple of minutes, turning halfway. Melt a knob of butter in a hot frying pan, then add the bread. Cook for a few minutes, flip the bread over and cook until golden on both sides. Plate up and top with yoghurt, fresh berries and a drizzle of maple syrup. Salt and pepper to taste. Alternatively, top with crispy smoked bacon, pan-fried mushrooms and avocado. Yummyy!! A LONG TIME AGO, IN A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY…….

the human race was fighting a war to contain an outbreak of plastic straws. Eight billion straws roamed the seas and beaches of the world, and another billion were being produced each and every day. This craziness had to stop! Straws had been used for thousands of years, with little fanfare and even littler impact. The paper straw, patented in 1888 by Marvin Stone, became a favourite throw-away product. Large corporations like Aardvark Straws learnt how to rapidly manufacture the straw, to profit from the growing addiction. By the 1960’s plastic straws became cheaper to produce and more durable than paper. Aardvark gave way to Friedman’s Flex-Straw Company. Plastic ruled better, cheaper, stronger. No one was looking at the future environmental impact. By 1977 the plastic addiction was obvious. George Lucas sent Luke Skytalker to save the earth. He was to articulate the problem and enlist an army of fellow greenies to eradicate the Plastic Menace. After nine episodes, three incarnations and record box office takings, success appeared to be at hand. 2019 saw a much greener, eco-aware galaxy, on the brink of finally containing the plastic straw outbreak. And then along came Darth Covider, bastard son of Sith and SARS. The galaxy was once again threatened – the Covid wars erupted. With focus diverted, plastic erupted. Disposable coffee cups were back in vogue. Plastic knives and forks returned to the supermarket shelves. Earth’s factories were conscripted to produce a stockpile of disposable masks and gloves to contain the new viral menace. 90 million masks and 80 million pairs of gloves were manufactured and distributed each and every month. Within six months a billion coffee cups, gloves and masks had filled the world’s garbage disposal dumps, and the oceans were once again at the mercy of a foreign invader. The human race thought they had solved the disposable plastic problem, but at the first challenge to convenience the addiction once more took control. With Luke long gone, and Princess Layla unavailable, the search was on for another Jedi leader. Boris had succumbed early on, and still had his Brexit challenge to deal with. Scott was doing well, but he was out of his depth on the world stage. Donald? Even Melania didn’t trust him, ever since he tried to inject her with bleach. No – it would be left to Luke’s other long-lost, half-sister to master the lightsaber, bring the oil barons to their knees, and kill off Darth’s viral invaders. How will it all end? Tune in to Episode 10 “Straw Wars – Princess Greta Awakens”. May the force be with you - stay alert, but not alarmed - stay chilled. Tony Byron Bazaar

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

BE PREPARED FOR SOME WEIRD AND

wonderful messages, opinions and YouTubes this week! Mercury, the planet that represents the intellect and communication is teaming up with Uranus, the rebel of the zodiac (exact on Friday). This happens in Taurus, a rather placid sign, more concerned with safety than uprising, unless there is a great threat that needs to be met head-on! Confusion is plentiful; who and what is the danger, hazard or risk? If not aroused and in fight-or-flight mode, Uranus and Mercury might come up with some really interesting and innovative, yet practical ideas. Thinking outside the box is almost mandatory! Meanwhile we are still, and for a long time to come, under the main influence of the Jupiter/Pluto conjunction (see back issues of BB). Venus in Gemini is slowing down a lot and preparing for a retrograde detour from mid-May to late June. This week she forms a difficult square to Neptune in Pisces. It activates great idealism and longing for romance, but most likely it ends in disappointment and disillusion. This transit may bring home the often painful truth that love is not something you passively accept, it is something you actively give. So if there is a great gap between how you want your love life to be and how it is in reality, ask yourself how could you love more? On Tuesday Mercury teams up with the Sun in earthy and sensual Taurus. You could make this a day for expressing your love and appreciation as often as possible, or show you care by cooking up a storm of delicious food that you share with people in need. This is also a beautiful day for creating art or music as food for the soul. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

The Justice Tarot card represents the search for truth, not just a personal opinion but a well-researched honest truth, built on ethical principles and transparency. This week you may run out of patience for listening to any intriguing conspiracy theories and rather concentrate on simple day-to-day tasks in front of you.

h TAURUS

The Prince of Swords is on a mission and he is in a hurry! With him by your side you are in for an interesting week! Drastic measures experienced in unprecedented times may inspire you to unusual reactions. The current astroclimate with Sun, Mercury and Uranus in your sign, really gets you going… almost flying ahead of the times, actually!

i GEMINI

With the Moon Tarot card drawn and Venus in your sign until early August, take some time for contemplation, meditation and soul-search. You are highly receptive to others’ mental/ emotional energy, which can be a blessing if they are in need of counselling, but it can be a curse if you aren’t aware of how you get influenced. This may be a confusing week!

j CANCER

The 9 of Cups is the wish-card in the Tarot deck. It suggests filling your heart with exactly these overflowing good feelings that you would have if one of your biggest wishes comes true. It is within your choice and reach to access this heart-open space, cherish it and nourish your soul with it.

d CAPRICORN

The 10 of Disks promises success, in particular concerning health and wealth issues. Things should fall into place easily this week, without you having to push or pull hard. When you trust that all is well, you have more time for fun and play which is so vital for your health and wellbeing.

The 10 of Wands implies that you have been overextending yourself, shouldering extra burdens, not only out of necessity, but also because you define your worthiness by how much you can be of service to others. This is the time to realise that you are most effective if you look after yourself first.

a LIBRA

The Fortune Tarot card offers an opportunity. There is a chance to turn a difficult situation around and find a new perspective. It may come as a breakthrough on more than one level, and bring great insights into how your mind and heart could work together to magnetise inner harmony and outer beauty more consistently.

b SCORPIO

The keyword for the 6 of Cups drawn is goodwill. The more you consciously open your heart and stay clear of heavy judgement, the more relaxed you feel, and the world suddenly appears to respond with softer hues everywhere. Good old-fashioned acts of random kindness are also a great feel-good remedy this week!

The 2 of Cups symbolises love in action. Waking up in the morning, it would set a positive mood if you meditate for a while on how to spread your caring and sharing in such a way that you are constantly moving towards more expression of your love. This also applies to the inner critic…

The World Tarot card refers to endings, new beginnings and release from old restrictions. Even though freedom to travel is out right now, nevertheless your mind is always free to explore new possibilities and you may feel motivated to release yourself from some very old ‘slavedriver’ conditioning.

e AQUARIUS

With the 9 of Wands drawn you are asked to focus on resilience and perseverance. Don’t buy into any negative, restricting future scenarios that create fear and dread. Uphold your values and visualise a free and just Aquarian New Age. Maybe listen to John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ for inspiration.

f PISCES

The Empress Tarot card represents the brilliant leadership qualities of the feminine. Express your tenderness, caring and refinement in words and any other medium you can communicate with. When you convey your deeply loving nature, combined with inner wisdom and experience, you have the capacity to heal and nurture others.

DEAR KEENWA,

I am writing for some clarity on a AVO (apprehended violence order, for all those who grew up with happy families) for my son. He's eight and a half. I have been copping emotional outbursts and bullying from him, as well as acts of violence since homeschooling began. There are at least ten more long weeks ahead, possibly a year, help! - Parent Teacher

DEAR PARENT TEACHER,

One word for you. Unschooling. In the first week, I tried to be all home-baked bread, Waldorf singing, and hand-sewing. But I am what I am. My children now wake-up and school themselves. They may not be able to write as well as i'd like; but they are badass at tarot reading (we study one card per day, and do a psychodrama of the archetypal qualities), astronomy (yep, they stay up later but also put themselves to bed), photography (my six year old did a photo essay on waves within bush lands), and they are learning to keep insects alive longer in their pet farms, and how to manage anger into something productive (a six am computer smashing which resulted in a complete rebuild of the machine). Sometimes they even make me brekkie in bed.

DEAR KEENWA,

I miss my real life school teacher. I can see my mum really tries to assist my learning. But... she's just so far off the mark. She gets so frustrated even with class two maths. My suggestion is that we should stop flogging a dead horse. My reading level has dropped dramatically, as well as my punctuation, but i'm fine about it. I just want to build a skate-ramp and surf each day. How can I get through to her? - Homeschool Hell

DEAR HOMESCHOOL HELL,

Perhaps you could just throw her a self-signed permission slip that its okay for her to be mum, not teacher anymore.

This week's review

TITLE: The Celestine Prophecy AUTHOR: James Redfield NUMBER OF PAGES: 256 READING TIME: 7 hours 18 minutes PRICE: $19.99 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: First published in 1993, The Celestine

Prophecy reads like a classic parable – less about character development and more about spiritual insight. Redfield uses an adventure novel to offer his vision of a new spiritual understanding. The hero, John Woodson, is on the search for an ancient manuscript that contains nine lost insights. Insights that could help the human race move towards a more enlightened path. John journeys to Peru, to the ruins of a Mayan civilisation, where the manuscript was meant to be buried. The Maya had mastered the insights thousands of years earlier, allowing them to cross over into a world of pure spirituality. When powerful figures within the Peruvian government and the Catholic Church seek to re-bury the manuscript, John’s life is threatened. A new nomadic existence sees him move from town to town, where the messages and insights of the manuscript are slowly revealed.

This week's recommendation

ALBUM TITLE: If You're Dreaming ARTIST: Anna Burch RELEASED: April 2020 GENRE: Alternative Pop / Folk BIO: This is Detroit singer-songwriter Anna Burch’s

second album. Burch had been a touring member of Frontier Ruckus before joining Failed Flowers in 2014. Writing songs and performing demos, she was finally signed to Polyvinyl Records in 2017. After laying down a few singles, her debut album Quit the Curse was released in February 2018.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Not quite as energetic as her first album, If You're Dreaming’s 12 tracks have a brighter feel, with plenty of jangly guitars and wistful vocals. With poppy piano and keyboards, and generous use of guitar reverb, the atmospherics of the production make it easy to listen to. Burch uses her music to communicate a wide range of feelings, and the lyrics often speak of (her?) troubling relationships. WHAT WE LIKE: The album opener Can't Sleep is an

easy intro, with an almost toe-tapping hook. The added guitars in Party's Over create a lush, multilayered sound. Lyrics come to the fore in Tell Me What's True, but even though they are harsh, the electric piano turns this into a lovely ballad. Not So Bad adds some smooth sax and a softer chorus (a bit like Dido?). Two strumming guitar instrumental tracks - Keep It Warm and Picture Show - have an Islandy feel and add to the contemplative mood of the album. At first listening, the final track Here With You sounds like it could have been on that debut album, but the acoustic guitars and mournful vocals provide a fitting close.

STANDOUT TRACKS: Can't Sleep, Not So Bad, Party's Over, Here With You. PERFECT FOR: Lazy, dreamy Sunday afternoons, when

being calm and relaxed is more important than tuning in to complex lyrics.
