After all that gardening, time to settle down with the Mocktail of the Week – Pineapple & Mint Mojito. Ingredients for two 20 Fresh mint leaves; 4 teaspoons sugar or sweetener; 1/2 cup pineapple juice; 2 limes, juiced; 1 cup soda water. Directions - In a cocktail shaker, muddle mint leaves with sugar or sweetener. Add pineapple juice, lime juice and ice, and shake vigorously for 15 seconds. Strain into 2 tall glasses filled with ice and top with soda water. Garnish with a sprig of mint. (For a slight variation, replace the pineapple juice with 1 cup crushed blackberries and ½ cup water, and hey presto – Blackberry Mojito!).

How about losing yourself in a Japanese desktop zen garden. Sand and rocks are easy to come by in Byron, so start with the basic “karesansui” or “dry landscape” garden. Step 1: Fill a flat container with sand and shake it from side to side to even it out. Step 2: Position 3 different sized stones in your garden, in a random triangular layout. Step 3: Add a few drops of essential oils for soothing aromas. Step 4: Create your sand patterns with a mini rake or fork. The placement of the stones in your garden has lots of meaning, as they represent things such as islands, mountains and trees. The sand patterns represent flowing water, and the act of raking the sand has a soothing and aesthetic function. Zen priests practice this raking to help their concentration and mindfulness. WE HAVE LEARNT TO WALK AROUND WITH BLINKERS ON FOR
most of our lives. We see what’s directly in front of us, but we don’t have much peripheral vision. Some people don rose coloured glasses, for a little extra optimistic style. Some add an eye patch, for character – but this narrows inputs even further. And others are actually blind behind their blinkers - they may look like everyone else, but they regularly trip over any obstacles in their way. Clarity of vision may be optional when you’re relaxing on the couch, but when you are living through “the greatest challenge of our generation” you’d better know what’s out there! Remove the blinkers; identify the issue; recognise it’s impact; research the options; think global, act local; and be flexible enough to change it all on the run! As the great philosopher Mike Tyson said - “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” For all it’s dire consequences, COVID-19 has undoubtedly demonstrated how we could tackle that other generational challenge – how to extract ourselves from the unhealthy and unsustainable reliance on fossil fuels. The inconvenience of travel bans and isolation, additional hygiene practices and social distancing, lower demand and curtailed expenditure, closed offices and distance learning – all these impossible sacrifices have proven to be not only possible, but necessary. The times, they are a-changin’. As the viral infection rates drop, collateral outcomes are hard to ignore. Blue skies, clean water, freezing polar caps. Bi-partisan politicians, grateful human beings, humble CEO’s. University business models out - teaching models in. Professional sporting elites out - amateur sport and entertainment in. Friends and family back on top - things and experiences relegated to second. We are learning to live without impulse shopping, compulsive gambling and repulsive materialism. We have shown that we can follow advice, when it comes from a credible source. Why wouldn’t we stay on this pathway? Priorities, they are a-changin’. This is our “come to Jesus moment” – our reality check – our moment of truth. The blinkers are off and the spotlight is on. Let’s not waste the opportunity of a generation, a lifetime, a millennium. As Bob Dylan might say today - stay safe, stay the course, stay chilled - the times, they are definitely a-changin’. Tony Byron Bazaar

EP TITLE: I Feel Alive ARTIST: TOPS RELEASED: April 2020 GENRE: Indie Pop BIO: This is the Montreal group’s 4th album, and it
builds on the sophisticated pop style of their earlier efforts. Co-songwriter and lead singer Jane Penny has a high pitch and an ethereal feel, and together with guitarist and songwriter David Carriere, they make great pop sounds. Keyboardist Marta Cikojevic joined the group for this recording, after supporting their recent tours, and she adds some instrumental depth and variety.
WHAT TO EXPECT: TOPS have a niche, and this album should provide a familiar sound for established fans and an easy entry point for newbies. A bit disco, a bit electro-pop and a lot of late-night moods. WHAT WE LIKE: The opening track, Direct Sunlight
is slightly 80’s Madonna, with lyrics straight out of Sting’s, “We’ll Be Together”. Next up, the title track sounds like a stand-alone single – upbeat, with layered harmonies, reminiscing Bananarama. Pirouette is one of the better tracks – it has a jazzy feel, with some funky synth effects. Slightly less bop, and more blip, Ballads & Sad Movies, Take Down, and Looking to Remember create a more sombre mood within an otherwise breezy offering. The album closes with Too Much, Jane’s vocals featuring once again (as they do on all the tracks actually).

PERFECT FOR: The breathy vocals and funky rhythms
definitely create a sensual vibe – perfect evening accompaniment in the right place, at the right time and maybe that should be all the time!
