overdosed on the C & V-word combo recently. While there may be no magic cure in sight yet, there are some positive steps we can take not just for ourselves, but also for our community. International travel and quarantine are not needed for a dose of the Hawaiian culture of Aloha. Practicing Aloha goes beyond saying “hello and goodbye”, it is a way of expressing all the good things between us including compassion, kindness, grace, and love that may become too easily forgotten right now as our self-survival instinct kicks in. To understand Aloha more, perhaps we should take a break from the C & V-word combo dominating our screens and Google: Aloha Meaning

Changing musical direction, it is time to amp it at La Latin Party at Woody’s for the hottest D-Floor on Thursdays from 10 pm. With rhythms spinning from the DJ booth it’s time to get down and learn some hip-shakin' moves thanks to the Latino grooves. Come Friday from 6 pm to 8 pm why not head to the Lone Goat Gallery for the opening night of Hannah Cutts: Buoys will be Buoys exhibition. With pieces on display created using found objects such as vintage linoleum, fishing floats, surfboard fins and more it promises to be something for our eyes and minds to explore. On Saturday you can get outside to help Mother Nature out at the Main Beach Clean-up from 8:30 am to 11:30 am. The good roosters at Positive Change for Marine Life will meet you at Apex Park to help you get started. Also on Saturday, but at Clarkes Beach, it's the Disabled Surfers Byron Bay Hands-On Day. This is a chance to volunteer yourself to help disabled people get out for a surfing experience. Volunteers can register at Main Beach at 9 am, and you'll get to enjoy a free BBQ lunch too. Music fans should head to The Northern on Saturday night for a night of psych and surf rock with Pasiflorez. The guys met in Byron and have just released an 8-track album. If mushies are on your radar following the rains then the Fungal Wizardry 101 Workshop is the most fungi fun you can have without getting trippy. Good things grow on Tuesday at 6 pm at the Byron Community Centre. The $49 ticket includes a take-home oyster mushroom kit, for info: Facebook: Urban Kulture Let the magic of Aloha be with us all.

On a practical and local level, instead of clearing supermarket shelves a shopping trip to a local farmers market will boost your immune system along with the local economy. Byron Farmers Markets runs on Thursdays 7 am to 11 am, Mullum Farmers Market runs on Fridays from 7 am to 11 am, Bangalow Farmers Market runs on Saturdays from 7 am to 11 am and New Brighton Farmers Market runs from 8 am to 11 am. Fresh, and local is best. Now if you recently dreamt of playing the flute then Thursday is your lucky night as you can learn to toot one at the Ancient Flute Worksop at The Timber Slab Factory on Coolamon Scenic Drive. MY MOTHER ALWAYS USED TO SAY TO US AS YOUNGSTERS
“Be prepared - everything comes in threes”. Sure enough, two accidents around the house would be followed by a third. Two rainy weekends and a third would be on its way. Two illnesses in the family inevitably, unfortunately, would be followed by a third. This rule only seemed to apply to bad news. Two winners at the races never lead to a third – despite many years of trying! Recent events have been following this same pattern. First the bushfires, then the floods, and just when we had hit a low point, along comes the coronavirus. Wham, bam, thankyou Ma’am! Only this time, I wonder if three will really be the end of the cycle? A fourth headline is emerging, and, being superstitious, I prefer not to name it here. No, I don’t mean climate change – I mean the “R” word. Perhaps “4” is the new “3”. It has always been important. It is the only number whose name in English has the same number of letters as its value. There are 4 seasons in a year; 4 directions of the compass; 4 elements - earth, air, water and fire. Our calendars require a leap year every 4th year to stay in sync; our homes and offices are dominated by 4 sided shapes - walls, bricks, doors, windows, tables, computers, TV screens. Playing cards have 4 suits; the greatest ever band is the “Fab 4” (in case you need reminding – the Beatles); and the world’s most popular books follow the mis-adventures of Harry Potter and the Four Houses of Hogwarts Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Even The Three Musketeers needed a fourth member to legitimise their heroics – so Athos, Aramis and Porthos were joined by d'Artagnan. My son once informed me that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were an updated version of the Musketeers. Why else would the 4 heroes have such oldfashioned names - Michelangelo, Donatello, Leonardo and Raphael? I hope Mum’s right, and 3 events sees out this cycle. Or that, as important and inevitable as 4 may be, this “R” (the financial dip we can’t mention) is short and sharp, and quickly followed by event 5. A “Good R”- a Rainbow - very often emerges from the gloom, once the sun comes out. If we stay alert, healthy and happy, and as always, stay chilled, we may even find that there is indeed a pot of gold! Tony, Byron Bazaar

She's crafted a vocal style that is uniquely hers, with her low tones flicking up playfully and a slight country twang that gives her songs warmth. Possibly it's her choral background that influences the vibrato she so easily utilises. Listen in to her lyrics, especially in the song Heart to Ride. TELL US WHERE YOU’RE FROM AND HOW YOU ENDED UP IN BYRON. I grew up in Nambucca Heads and went to high school in Coffs Harbour. We spent about 10 years in Sydney working and playing, and then after my husband and I started a family we wanted to get back to a country lifestyle and be closer to family. The Mid North Coast seemed like the perfect place to lay down some roots and give our kids a childhood like our own. YOU’RE A VOICE OVER ARTIST AND A WEDDING CELEBRANT – DO THESE ROLES SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER IN ANY WAY? They do actually. I'm very good at cold reading, meaning I can look at a script and quickly work out the way it needs to sound, which is important in both roles. You also need good people skills in both, as you're always working with new people. And the schedules seem to fit in well - most weddings are performed late in the afternoon or on weekends, whereas the voice work is 9-5. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT BYRON WHAT WOULD IT BE? More understanding and acceptance between different groups of people and less judgement – but that's a universal problem and not something that Byron has a monopoly on.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MUSIC TO CHILL OUT TO? At home you'll find me listening to all sorts of music; The Beatles, Father John Misty, Beyonce, LCD Sounds System, the Beastie Boys, Leon Bridges, Dope Lemon – it's quite eclectic.
