IT IS AN UNDISPUTED FACT THAT OF ALL THE ANIMAL SPECIES ON earth, primates are the most closely related to humans - in features, mannerisms, bad habits and actions. If you were looking for any proof, go no further than the story that unfolded last week -“Baboons run amok at Sydney Hospital”.

Last Tuesday, three baboons escaped while being transported to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (the “RPA” of prime-time television fame). The three escapees were a 15-year-old male baboon of average height and weight, wearing only a large pair of red underpants, and two smaller females who had been brought along to keep him company. The girls, Thelma and Louise, both had distinctive red hair and were sporting bright red lipstick at the time. Robert, the male baboon, was booked in to have a vasectomy, which he had apparently not consented to having, and was keen to avoid. After picking the locks on their cage in the transportation vehicle, Bob and his two wives made their break for freedom when the truck door was thoughtlessly swung open to let in some fresh air, as it had been a very hot day. After their successful escape, Bob, Thelma and Louise did what anyone would do, and sought out a pub. Their celebrations were brought to a premature end when it turned out the hotel they had chosen had a strict responsible service culture. After 3 schooners each, the girls became quite loud and obnoxious, and were refused service. Bob went off, and, baboons being baboons, the place was trashed in less than 5 minutes. The police were called, along with the local vet, and the adventure was over. The vasectomy then proceeded without further incident. In follow up investigations it has been disclosed that Bob is doing as well as can be expected, although the bruising is quite substantial, as you might imagine. Medicare has agreed to pick up the tab for the pub – adding it to the hospital rebate. And the transportation company found its set of spare keys in Thelma’s handbag, along with four wallets, a fake ID, and three half eaten bananas. Apart from the fact that Bob had 25 wives at home, this could have been just another episode of “RPA”, or “Bondi Vet”. Baboons, gorillas, chimpanzees – when they’re not hard at work, they could probably hang out and chill in the Bay just like you and me. We are after all the home of Australia’s finest bananas! Tony, Byron Bazaar

This week's recommendation

ALBUM TITLE: The Slow Rush ARTIST: Tame Impala RELEASED: February 2020 GENRE: Psychedelic Rock, Disco House BIO: Tame, whose real name is Kevin Parker has just

released his 4th album that was written, recorded and produced by himself. He has worked with A$AP Rocky, Lady Gaga and Mark Ronson. Vice Magazine named him "Artist of the Decade" for the 2010's citing his genre-hopping sound and isolated creative process that embraces technology. His live band includes members of psychedelic rock band Pond.

WHAT TO EXPECT: The sound holds true to the album

title, Slow Rush, the release grows slow and builds unique energy that intensifies in the 2nd half. It’s a clever blend of genres fusing rock and dance that is heavy in effects and audio processing.

WHAT WE LIKE: The jungle of sound layers and effects are well arranged and produced with Tame’s voice glowing and sparkling amongst the orbiting synths and guitars. If you are willing to go with it you’ll be rewarded with a melodic, hypnotic musical trip venturing across rock, pop, and dreamy club dance-floors. It is all threaded together by lyrics of life’s moments as time rolls on forward as sung on Tomorrow’s Dust “And there's every chance I'll be there and past, And the day will come, and then it will pass” & “And in the air of today is tomorrow's dust”. In summary, it’s a grooving, enchanting funky 57 mins. STANDOUT TRACKS: Borderline, Is It True, It Might

Be Time

PERFECT FOR: The slow-release of endorphins. Yoga and pilates flow. Sunset DJ sets. LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: Methyl Ethel, Daft Punk, The

Weekend, MGMT.

This week's mantra

BELONGING IS YOUR BIRTHRIGHT. PART 1/3 If you have spent your life earning your worth, bartering for belonging, scraping together a sense of wholeness, hustling up a sense of security paid for in instalments, tit for tat... Let me ask you... Who decided you didn’t belong? Who decided you weren’t enough? Who told you you were not already intrinsically worthy and whole and a part of not just something but of everything? Who told you this lie for the very first time? (Was it you?) Because, dear one, this idea that somehow you aren’t already perfectly formed, perfectly made for this world is not just improbable, but impossible. Your belonging is not something to be weighed and measured or calculated and earned. Your belonging is not evaluated by application once you have become something more. Your belonging began the very moment the first cells of your being began to quiver and shake. That was your invitation and your initiation. Because, Who looks at a mountain and says: just a bit out of place. Who says to a river: a little to the right. Who asks the sun: turn it down a notch. Who orders the moon: stop changing shape. Who tsks at the tussock grasses for dancing in the wind? Who raises an eyebrow at how quietly the tree breathes? Who whispers to the lake: I wish you were an ocean. Who tells the cloud: you aren’t meant to be here. Who scolds the lichen: don’t cling so tightly. Who tells the flower she is a petal short? No one. Not you, not me, not God or the divine or nature itself. And if all of that, all of creation, is good enough, just as it’s made, why wouldn’t you be, too? Read Part 2/3 in next week’s issue of Byron Bazaar!

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

ON

THURSDAY

MERCURY,

STILL

retrograde, forms a sweet sextile with Venus. This happens for the second time within 10 days! Take this opportunity to cherish life in great company. Almost simultaneously Venus moves into her home-turf of Taurus. For the next four weeks she is easily seduced by beauty, but also by the promise of wealth and luxury. She values art, taste and social graces. Friday is potentially a stressful day, but hard work could become quite therapeutic. During the weekend Sun and Neptune celebrate their yearly union in Pisces and bring a soft and inclusive mood. For the next few days creativity and intuition are highlighted, as well as romance. On Monday Lady Venus unites with Uranus; unique expressions of earthly delights are very much appreciated and everything new or exciting is very appealing. Surprise your loved one with something out of the ordinary! The Full Moon in Virgo is still very much under the spell of the big two conjunctions that just occurred. On Wednesday Mercury finishes his three week retrograde sojourn. For a little while it might feel as if time is standing still. This can be relaxing or frustrating, depending on your workload and stress… It’s best to practice patience because Mercury will take until the end of this month to move beyond his retrograde shadow. Only then he gains real momentum and the world opens up to new possibilities. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

The Lovers Tarot card puts a spotlight on relationships. This is the week to revive romance, make new connections and appreciate your loved ones in any way possible. Before every interaction ask yourself what love would do. This could be a truly transformative and delightful experience…

h TAURUS

The Prince of Wands is often called ‘Prince Charming’ and he arrives just in time to infuse your life with renewed passion and confidence. You may be in the mood for romance and you are willing to take the risk to wear your heart on your sleeve. If that’s not you right now, maybe your favourite creative petproject provides the pleasure you desire.

i GEMINI

The 3 of Wands emphasises the body-mind-spirit connection and makes you aware that only activities that satisfy your whole being lead in the right direction and bring you the growth you desire. This is the week to think big, get fit and prepare for bigger things to come, but it is not time to strike out yet.

j CANCER

The 4 of Disks describes a dilemma: on the one hand you love being around friends and family, but on the other hand they might also take a lot out of you. You may feel forced to set limits and establish clear boundaries this week. Don’t over-extend yourself because that makes you cranky with the people you love.

BY GISELA

k LEO

The Princess of Swords is upfront and tells the truth. At times she may come across as a bit harsh. Since the astro flavour of this week is rather soft, you may be able to get to the heart of any matter, but deliver your message in the nicest and most charming way.

l VIRGO

With the World Tarot card drawn and the Full Moon in your sign this can be a very rewarding week. You are always keen to better yourself, help others and care for the environment, and now you may find a new perspective or vision for how to do all of that more effectively while you enjoy life tremendously.

a LIBRA

The Strength Tarot card provides great courage, resolve and composure. It renews your passion for life, even though not everything is in perfect balance yet. This is a great week to overcome old doubts and to allow your creative, artistic juices to flow freely; a very vitalising energy!

b SCORPIO

The Ace of Cups represents the ability to consciously open your heart to let love, compassion and empathy in. Through wholehearted connection with others you get in touch with some very delicate feelings which won’t be accessible if you stay in your protective armour. Giving and receiving can be equally enjoyable.

c SAGITTARIUS

The Princess of Disks symbolises the highly creative force of the goddess who works in mysterious and mostly hidden ways. You may want immediate results, but she comes to teach you about one of the most important facts of manifestation. A lot of what you want to bring forth is already in the making, it is just not visible yet. Be patient…

d CAPRICORN

With the 7 of Wands drawn you may have to hold out against pressure this week and muster a lot of courage to assert yourself. Don’t waste your energy resenting the fact that you have to teach some people how you deserve to be treated. Just be yourself and trust your expression.

e AQUARIUS

With the Prince of Cups drawn the emotional tide is high. You may feel extremely moved by some encounters or find yourself in a dreamlike state. Your deep feelings may drive you to great creative expressions. Make sure you are not under time constraints, so that you have time to flow with it.

f PISCES

The Empress Tarot card symbolises loving care and great intuition. She inspires you to resist the compulsive urge of over-giving, and teaches you to also take your own needs into consideration. She can be your motivation to take charge in the most gentle way possible.

BOOKS FOR Y

This week's review

TITLE: The Outsider AUTHOR: Stephen King AUDIO BOOK NARRATOR: Will Patton LISTENING TIME: 18 hours 41 minutes PRICE: $39.10 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: The Outsider begins with the very

public arrest of a little league baseball coach for the heinous murder of a boy. The police don’t even interview him before the arrest, so sure are they of the evidence they’ve amassed. However things begin to get weird (as they always do in King’s novels) when the coach reveals his mother of all alibies. As the detective's growing doubts about the man’s guilt war with his faith in forensic evidence, his scepticism becomes the ball and chain he drags along as he tries to redeem himself for his life’s greatest mistake.

WHO IT'S FOR: This story strikes a nice balance

between the genre of crime and the supernatural. If you like detective- driven crime and can stomach some fantasy/horror, you’ll find it a refreshing twist to the usual ‘who-dunnit’. Be warned, the description of the murder scene isn’t for the faint of heart.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ OR LISTEN TO IT: Stephen King

isn’t one of the most widely known living writers for nothing! It’s a gripping listen, a decent length and a satisfying, if slightly predictable, ending.

NARRATION QUALITY: Will Patton is a gem of a narrator. His voice acting is superb and really was the clincher that made it hard to stop listening to. He gave life and humour to some of King’s more eccentric characters, and didn’t overact the more central roles, all of who were distinct and easy to identify. His portrayal of the Outsider was particularly creepy and impressive.

DEAR KEENWA,

I write to share my disappointment in International Women's Day. It's a bit tokenistic isn't it? As a husband, and father of three daughters, I know my girls deserve to be celebrated more than one day a year. Women deserve more than a luncheon, so I make mine brekkie each morning and thank my lucky stars that I get to share their incredible feminine light. I track all their menstrual cycles on my phone so I am aware of appropriate cuddle moments, and when to take leave from the house, and whether to take their intuition seriously or not. Is there anything else I could be doing? - Rad Dad

DEAR RAD DAD,

Whilst your house sounds like a menstrual cup commercial; word on the street is still a gender pay gap of 16%, severe discrimination in the workplace and in society for simply being a mother, and at least one woman a week being murdered by her partner. But one word for you pops – workshop! Take whatevs it is that you're breathing, to all the other men of the world (around day 14 would be best).

DEAR KEENWA,

I am a strong woman, and a dedicated feminist. And i'll be damned if I don't want a wife. This is a public callout for one. Every man that has ever done something great did so with the support of a great woman behind him, quietly organising the logistics with dedication and bottling his greatness for the planet to purchase. I too want someone to take my ideas and turn them into books, exhibitions, and films whilst also keeping the house and children going so I can travel and be fabulous in the world. Do you know anybody? - Wife Seeker

DEAR WIFE SEEKER,

Here's the thing. I don't even use that F word anymore, a word actually born from patriarchal times. As long as we frame ourselves in reference to men or people in power, we will be the underdogs. Let us all make the earth the focus, and watch as people everywhere flock to the sides of those in creative servitude to her (funnily, mostly those with wombs).

HAVE A QUESTION FOR KEENWA?

IF YOU WENT TO A FANCY-DRESS PARTY, WHO WOULD YOU GO AS, AND WHY? A cowboy - I was born west of Sydney, so I think that cowboy blood still runs in me. Nah, I just like cowboy hats. BYRON IS RENOWNED FOR ITS WILD BRUSH TURKEYS. HAVE YOU HAD ANY CLOSE ENCOUNTERS? After my 21st birthday party I did a big clean up and put the bags at the top of my driveway and went for a nap. The little f@&k3rs ripped all the bags and the bottles rolled down and smashed everywhere. They are sooo lucky they are not on the menu. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MUSIC TO CHILL OUT TO? My playlists go from Tupac to Taylor Swift and everything in between. Just depends on the day.

PRO-SURFER OR RESTAURANT OWNER – WHAT’S HARDER? Surfing puts you in some scary and difficult situations, but I have been practicing for them since I was seven. Starting a business and diving into something new is definitely harder for now. If only eating everyday prepared you to have a restaurant I’d be fine.

TELL US HOW YOU ENDED UP IN BYRON. I grew up at Copacabana, a small town on the central coast. Once I was travelling, surfing, and my friends got real jobs, I would come home and be pretty bored. I made the move to Bondi, as every overpaid under obligated teenager does, but realised I needed surf and a little more space. So Byron seemed like the perfect spot. I think I was right.

THE FRIDAY HUT DINING AND ACCOMMODATION VENTURE IS STILL PRETTY NEW – WHAT’S IN STORE? I have been lucky enough to travel the world, stay in people’s homes and eat amazing local foods. Our plan is to have the highest quality local ingredients and dishes set in our favourite part of the Byron hinterland. (My dad drives the complimentary shuttle, so everyone can have a drink and get home safe too!) The accommodation has been exciting to set up, so we can share where we live with other lucky travellers. We have 6 luxury bedrooms, a brand new pool, cinema-room, woodfire pizza oven and 80 metres of bubbling creek frontage. It feels like you’re in another world, but it’s only 15 minutes to the beach and the heart of town. COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE – “I LOVE …. early surfs when the whales are in town. Nothing like being out the back watching the sunrise and having those majestic creatures bellyflopping around you. Getting barrelled is on my love list too” IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT BYRON, WHAT WOULD IT BE? If we could change Broken Point and The Pass into left-handers I would appreciate it! And make Wattegos dog friendly.
