2020 IS A LEAP YEAR AND traditionally, on Feb 29th it was perfectly OK for a woman to propose and “put a ring on it”. Now, if the proposal is not forthcoming do not worry as there are plenty of other engagements to say 'yes' to this weekend.

On Friday, Sea Shepherd Byron Bay hosts the screening Ocean Warriors – Chasing the Thunder at Byron Theatre from 5:30 pm. The doco covers the longest chase in maritime history as Sea Shepherd pursued the notorious fishing vessel Thunder for 110 days across the oceans. Grab your tix at byroncentre.com.au for the screening that includes a Q&A with one of the sailors involved in this epic cat and mouse chase. On Saturday you can boogie those hips at Warm Up from 6pm at The Rock and Roll Coffee Company over in Mullum. DJs Pob, Andrew Haig, Milk, and El Toro play the funk, disco, Balearic and house, with happy hour cocktails from 6 pm to 7 pm you’ll soon be heating up the floor. It's free entry with an item of canned food, that will be donated to the Mullumbimby & District Neighbourhood Centre Inc. On ‘Sunday Funday’ the music continues at Byron Bay Brewery with the legendary soulster Lisa Hunt bringing the good times from 5 pm. Also at 5pm, it’s the Go Wild for Wildlife Fun$Raiser at Marvell Hall. It promises to be a bit of a bush dance, and the chance to find out how you can help our wildlife friends. Entry is via a donation to the cause whilst kids are free. If you’ve got, or know of someone with a business that wants to go 'next level' then Sonia Friedrich’s one-day event, Irrational Pricing Wins needs to be on the radar. Attendees will be empowered with strategies and savvy tips around behavioral economics, brand value, pricing, and product decoys. The event runs from 9 am to 3:30 pm Tuesday at Elements of Byron. “WILD HORSES WOULDN’T KEEP ME AWAY.” SO SAID MY FRIEND

when I asked if they were still coming over for dinner, despite two days of torrential rain. “Great” I responded – pleased that the beautiful vegan platter Jo had spent hours preparing would not be going to waste. I certainly wouldn’t be eating it! I have heard and used that phrase many times, but never stopped to think what it meant. “Nothing will keep me away.” I get that. But “wild horses wouldn’t keep me away”. When have wild horses ever got in the way of someone trying to go somewhere? Horses always seem pretty flighty to me – more likely to run from any perceived danger than gallop towards it. Who’s scared of a horse? The Trojans loved horses so much they welcomed a giant one into their city – actually, it was full of enemy soldiers, so that ended badly! The Rolling Stones wrote a song about this issue. Childhood living is easy to do The things you wanted I bought them for you Graceless lady you know who I am You know I can't let you slide through my hands Wild horses couldn't drag me away Wild, wild horses couldn't drag me away “Wild Horses” is supposedly Mick Jagger singing about his unconditional love for someone (Marianne Faithfull?). No matter what you say or do to me, I’m gonna stay by your side. Those pesky wild horses ain’t chasin’ me off ! Some reviewers say the song is actually about the pain and suffering of drug addiction – the wild horse is the heroin needle that nearly killed Marianne? Either way, the horse is a problem that needs to be overcome if desires are to be satiated. Talking of wild brumbies, they are now a big problem for the wildlife in Kosciuszko National Park. Following the recent bushfires, as many as 17,000 brumbies are destined to be shot or transported to the knackery, as their growing population critically endangers the habitat. They may be an introduced species, but brumbies appear to cope with the natural order of things better than our natives. They out breed, out eat, and outrun koalas, kangaroos, wombats, wallabies, snakes and lizards. They escape the fire-zone and then nibble away at all the new green shoots, trample the undergrowth with their hard hoofs, and chase off the natives. These wild horses WILL keep you away. 130 years ago and against all the odds, Clancy, the Man from Snowy River, rounded up and tamed the wild bush horses single handed. Surely, with the benefit of multiple enquiries, millions of dollars and past experience we have learned how to share the high country with the brumbies? Just in case we haven’t, be aware, stay chilled, and watch out for the cracking whips and the wild horses. Tony, Byron Bazaar

This week's recommendation

ALBUM TITLE: Stranger Heart E.P. ARTIST: Jack River RELEASED: February 2020 GENRE: Indie Pop, Alternative BIO: Jack River is the alias of Forster's Holly Rankin,

a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and producer. The E.P. follows her critically acclaimed 1st album in 2018, numerous A.R.I.A. award nominations and it was just released on Valentine’s Day.

WHAT TO EXPECT: It’s not soppy at all, but you can expect

songs about love: coming close to it, hoping for it, thinking they'll be in it, being in it, and holding on to it. Musically, it's light and dreamy whilst grunty beats, whirling guitars and 80's synth pads bring the energy.

WHAT WE LIKE: And it's that blend of musical sounds

that give the release an emotional depth as it walks the line of love's intoxicating happiness and emotional tangles. It crosses genres between pop, indie, electronica and ballads with ease. Tracks range from sing-along electro-pop-folk moments on Night Song and Dark Star to the slow-moving Closer where her lyrical talents are on show: "Swimming in the dark, lazy / Car sea, dust, crazy / Infinity above me, taze me / With your deep-sea eyes, baby / Shake me down, light me up, lay me". The release crescendos on the final track 80's HD following current trends of artists freshening up the 80's synth-pop sound. E.P.s are a great way for listeners to discover the best of new music quickly without filler tracks, and that holds true here. Hey, the music and emotion all come together here just right.

STANDOUT TRACKS: Night Song, Dark Star, Closer. PERFECT FOR: Falling in love with someone in 2020. LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: Angie McMahon, Lime Cordiale,

Alex the Astronaut, Taylor Swift. Recommended by Dan McGill.

This week's mantra

SEEING THE BEST IN PEOPLE HELPS PEOPLE SEE THE BEST IN THEMSELVES. When we are reminded of our goodness, our magic, of the ways we matter, it helps us all do our best - and be our best selves. And when we are all showing up as our best selves, the world changes for the better. And yet, we seem collectively obsessed with criticism and catching on another being “bad.” We seem totally fixated on finding wrongness in others, as if, by default, it makes us right. What if we redirected our focus? What if we rebelled against this current of criticism and judgment? How might we change the world for the better by simply reminding each other of our goodness? Here’s my invitation to us all: See the good. When you see it, speak it. More blessing. Less bashing. More congratulations. Less criticism. More big ups. Less put-downs. Choose to be a loving mirror. Reflect someone's light back to them. See who you can catch being good today.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

VENUS IN ARIES IS FIRED UP, CONFIDENT and quite self-centred as she traverses Aries which is the archetypical sign of the warrior. During the weekend she might descend into a rather ruthless mode; a square to Pluto brings out her shadow, creates tension and activates latent obsessions. Be aware of your own darkness before you react or jump to conclusions. Mercury is in the middle of his retrograde sojourn. Any notion that seemed too far-out in early February may need to be reconsidered right now, as Mercury forms a sextile to Uranus for the second time. Some great ideas might be hatched that lead to new opportunities or even inventions. But wait, there is another connection coming in two weeks! Mercury moves back into innovative Aquarius on Wednesday for eleven days. It might be necessary to revise some issues that were considered to be sorted a month ago. Unique solutions and thinking outside the box bring success. At the same time a Venus/Saturn square creates a vibe of unease or doubt. Don’t judge yourself or others harshly. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

The Hierophant Tarot card represents the voice of experience, but also the inner wisdom that comes from a lifetime of learning and relating. This week you may be called to solve a dispute or help to resolve some family issues. Know your shadow and consciously act from your light.

h TAURUS

The Ace of Swords gifts you with great clarity. This week you might have an ‘aha’ moment that makes you change your plans and turn things around for the better! This is a great week for gathering new ideas and brainstorming innovative solutions to persistent problems, even though their practical application may take some time.

i GEMINI

BY GISELA

k LEO

The 5 of Wands symbolises irritation, hassles and even set-backs. There may be disagreements with your nearest and dearest that lead to feeling limited and held back. It would be easiest to make your opponent responsible for that, but if you dig deeper you may find that your way of responding to arguments inflames them.

l VIRGO

In the light of the Moon Tarot card reality is hard to grasp; things look different and deceptive; it is easy to get confused. This is not the time to make farreaching decisions, but it is a marvellous time to immerse yourself in nature, meditation or an all-absorbing creative endeavour.

a LIBRA

The Princess of Swords is a rebel at heart. She does not play by convention or political correctness. With her by your side you won’t hold back your truth, in particular if you encounter something ethically questionable. You also have to be prepared for others to react strongly to your truth!

The Prince of Cups describes the way of the lover within. Your deep desire to create peace and harmony drives you to fulfil others’ needs constantly. With the Prince of Cups by your side you may experience your own innermost yearnings more urgently and find a new balance between pleasing yourself and others.

j CANCER

b SCORPIO

The Prince of Wands is confident and ready to take a leap into uncharted territory. Under most circumstances the crab would dread a moment like this, but now an adventurous mood is taking over. This week you might feel fired up and your can-do attitude secures success.

With the 4 of Wands drawn this is the week to rejoice and celebrate your well-deserved success! Some things you set in motion quite some time ago come full circle. This accomplishment sets you free and opens up a space for new possibilities. These may be so exciting that you almost forget to enjoy you well deserved rewards.

c SAGITTARIUS

The 4 of Disks symbolises a dilemma for the very social Sagittarius. On the one hand you love to share your time and energy freely with friends, family and like-minded people; on the other hand you might get too distracted from your mission and also too exhausted. Setting clear boundaries and owning your limits is the quest for this week.

d CAPRICORN

The 7 of Wands indicates that the time is ripe for standing up and asserting yourself. You may have to teach others how you want to be respected and treated. Take courage and don’t settle for a less than satisfactory deal. Only by taking your needs seriously, can you make sure that others value them too.

e AQUARIUS

When the Hanged Man Tarot card appears it becomes obvious how some habitual but ineffective patterns restrict your personal choices and limit your overall scope. Who would you be if you let them go? Take some time out to cultivate a new, higher perspective that frees up stuck energy and revives your zest for life.

f PISCES

The Princess of Disks symbolises the creative power of the goddess in her gestation phase. A lot of creativity and transformation happens in the unseen before it is ready to be birthed. Right now it would be counter-productive to push hard for results. Trust that everything that is in the making has its own timing, and practice patience.

OUR BEACH B

BOOKS FOR Y

This week's review

TITLE: Little Women AUTHOR: Louisa May Alcott NUMBER OF PAGES: 816 EST. READ TIME: 11 hours 3 minutes PRICE: $12.99 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: The March sisters couldn’t be more

different. And yet their sisterhood is stronger than any. This classic coming of age story has recently been revived by Greta Gerwig in the film by the same name. Little Women explores how these sisters are grappling with the introduction of adult ideas, romance, class and work in a world without the gender rights conversations we are having today.

WHO IT'S FOR: Little Women is for those who need a

hopeful reminder of the ways in which we grow and change with the transition from childhood to adulthood. It is surprisingly heartwarming and relevant for our times. A nice reminder of how women have been grappling with their identities and roles in society for centuries and the conversations we are having in 2020 are not new.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: For a novel that was

published in 1868 the book has some beautiful relevance in today’s world. The girls each represent a different part of the female experience and the relationships they share are beautiful and grounded in real truth for anyone who has siblings or strong family ties.

NOTABLE QUOTES: ‘There are many Beths in the world,

shy and quiet, sitting in corners till needed, and living for others so cheerfully that no one sees the sacrifices till the little cricket on the hearth stops chirping, and the sweet, sunshiny presence vanishes, leaving silence and shadow behind.’

DEAR KEENWA,

I'm a leap year bloke. February 29 is going ahead this year. It's MY BIRTHDAY FA REALZ BITCHES! That's all. - Quartered Down

DEAR QUARTERED DOWN,

Two words for your birthday buddy - Tony. Robbins. Doesn't that explain so much? I'm thinking he spent so much time chatting motivationally to February 28 each year, that he made it believe it was the second last day of February, just so he could have cake. An expensive one. He'd be all like, now, "people love to say that knowledge is power. But the truth is that knowledge is only potential power." With 80's frat music blasting in the background, he would have been like now February 29, "the enemy of execution is complexity", where focus goes, energy flows." You totally exist. Every. Single. Year. Fist pump. Party hat. BOOM.

over it, so very clean. $300, you need to collect. 0459 338 909 for photo ,etc

WANTED

DEAR KEENWA,

I've just arrived home from a yoni steaming party and I am panicking! Before I devulge (seriously, no pun intended) the deets, I should probs let you know that I am a long-time germaphobe (not my fault, I'm a Virgo). I thought we may have been gifted our own stool, considering the large investment, but alas we were to share. Fifty women. By the time the steam bath had moved around the whole circle, and arrived at me, the water was lukewarm, and I wasn't sure if the chunks of floating matter were herbal medicines or my sisters' actual skin pieces. What can I say, peer pressure got the best of me. I inhaled. Is there any chance that the infections the others' were steaming to cure, I also now need to repair? - Steamy STD

DEAR STEAMY STD,

Now that's what I call an oxytocin rinse. You better sign up for the next steam party.

Lucas Patchett CO-FOUNDER ORANGE SKY

TELL US WHERE YOU’RE FROM AND WHAT BRINGS YOU TO BYRON. Born in Sydney, been a Brissie boy for 20 years. My best mate, Nic and I took our first van into the streets there, and met locals doing it tough. Five years later, we’re rolling out our 31st Orange Sky van in the Northern Rivers. There are more than 1, 500 locals experiencing homelessness every night in the region and we're pleased that Orange Sky and our volunteers can provide support. WHERE DID THE NAME “ORANGE SKY” COME FROM? ‘Orange Sky’ was a song written by Alexi Murdoch, a British singersongwriter. It speaks about solidarity and dreaming of a better way of supporting the community. Nic and I loved the song, the message, the colour orange, and it all kind of stuck. We also aren’t religiously or politically associated, so needed a name to reflect that. WHO OR WHAT IS “DON”? Don is our van. He is big, orange, filled with two washing machines, two dryers and a warm shower, and is ready to support the Northern Rivers community. He is a much improved version of Sudsy - our very first van - as he has his own power and water supply and doesn’t break down every few weeks! COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE – “I LOVE …. learning, having fun and helping people” IF YOU WENT TO A FANCY-DRESS PARTY, WHO WOULD YOU GO AS, AND WHY? The last dress-up party I went to was for Halloween. I went as Clarke Kent as I had a Superman shirt and it seemed like the easiest thing to do. I live in my Orange Sky shirt most days of the year, so anything that’s not bright orange feels like a dress-up to me! HAVE YOU BEEN ON THE LOOKOUT FOR BYRON’S BRUSH TURKEYS, AS THEY HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO RUN OFF WITH THE LAUNDRY? We have a super dedicated team of volunteers who take amazing care of our friends’ laundry – I’d be very surprised if a brush turkey was able to get away with anything!
