MELBOURNE

FOR

THE

WEEKEND.

Melbourne - home of good coffee, great restaurants, AFL, Australian Open, the Melbourne Cup – and of course, climate change. Byron may be flooding, but here it’s a balmy 28 degrees. Or it was – now it looks a bit stormy – that’s Melbourne! Growing up in the southern city, I guess I became a bit obsessed with climate change. Melbourne’s geography, topography and it’s famous inversion layer meant that the climate was notoriously difficult to predict. Make it here as a climate forecaster, and you can make it anywhere! Perhaps I’m confusing climate change with the weather? I used to think they were the same thing – or at least very closely related. Apparently not! There are experts who say we can experience significant weather events that are nothing to do with the climate, and we can witness seismic climatic change that will have no impact on the weather! Who would have thought?! Can that really be possible? It sounds to me a bit like putting Bridget McKenzie and $100 million in a room together and expecting there to be some change left for coffee in the morning. Highly unlikely! Arriving at the hotel, I immediately switch on the news. I need a climate fix. And there it is – the weather report. On every channel there are stars like Tim Bailey, Grant Denyer, Emma Freedman, Nathe, Stevie J, Sam Mac, JT, Jane Bunn, Rebecca Judd, Livinia, Brownie, and Byron’s own Magdalena Roze. These celebrities dominate the networks. They are models, entertainers, actors and meteorologists. They cross to roaming weather reporters, out on location. They front weather walls and Instagram pics. They interview surfers, fishermen, school kids and mayors. They track cyclones, bushfires, sea swell, and the movement of highs and lows. Their stories lead the news, close the news, ARE the news. Pardon the pun, but the weather is just a front. This is the age of the Climate Evangelist. Meteorologists are her disciples, and we are all the flock, awaiting conversion. How should I prepare for the trip home to Byron? Sam Mac tells me to expect it all – rainfall and sunshine, clear skies and thunderstorms, bushfires, floods, smoky days and a purple haze. I’m off to Target to do some shopping. I saw a new multi-purpose, Melbourne made, four-seasons, climate change ready umbrella. It will be perfect for chillaxing in the backyard in Byron – whatever the weather. Cheers….. Tony, Byron Bazaar

This week's mantra

BE AN INNER ENVIRONMENTALIST.

We’re pretty lit here in Byron - you don’t see nearly as many single-use coffee cups, plastic water bottles or straws in these parts as you do outside of the Byron bubble. Mamas and Papas pack plastic-free lunches and shun cling film and attend protests with babes in arms. Reusable razors are all the rage. Organic food and fabrics and compostable packaging abound in our beautiful Bay. Which is awesome and important. I’m so proud of the way we are all doing small things together to create a big change. Protests and plasticfree living are important. Because environmentalism depends on outward action. But what’s happening outside of us is a reflection of our inner lives. So environmentalism also depends on inner work. We need to turn our gaze inward and reflect on what aspects of ourselves have contributed to this catastrophe. The best way to create change in the outer environment is to change the inner environment. And the best tool I know of for doing that is meditation. Meditation offers us the opportunity to develop equanimity, a word derived from Latin which translates to “balanced internal state.” By sitting still and noticing the changing landscape of emotions and thoughts in meditation, we practice staying (rather than leaving or resisting) and listening (without judgement or attachment). Equanimity deepens our self-awareness and amps up our emotional intelligence. It also schools us in non-attachment which makes responding wisely to our impulses and emotions a heck of a lot easier. We eat, buy and act more consciously, rather than in reaction to distorted feelings, unconscious cravings and self-soothing impulses. In other words, we can investigate - and relate differently to - the underlying discomforts that cause us to move with more speed than we should and consume more than we need. So take action with your life, yes. But also, be an inner environmentalist. Be an inner activist. Change the inner landscape and the outer landscape will shift, too. Because when you become more conscious, your choices do too.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

FRIDAY (VALENTINE’S DAY) MAY BE AN

intense day and relationships that are already on rocky ground or infused by doubt rather than trust, may disintegrate further. Any bubble of hopeful expectation can burst quickly! You fare best if you are upfront and absolutely honest with yourself and others, while delivering your message in the kindest way possible. This is much easier before midday while la Luna is in Libra, whereas once she moves into Scorpio she may choose to withhold and conceal how she really feels. On Sunday Mars, the planet for straightforward action, moves into goal-oriented Capricorn, where Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto are long-term residents. During the next two months monumental efforts may or may not lead to the desired results; be prepared for quite a bit of frustration! Now is also the time to prepare for Mercury’s first three week retrograde stint through Pisces and into Aquarius (18th of February to 11th of March). Back up your electronic gadgets and make sure that your car is in good working order. Take extra care to communicate clearly in order to avoid misunderstandings and if you travel, allow more time for possible delays. This period is perfect to revise a creative project. On Wednesday the Sun moves into visionary and compassionate Pisces. The combination of four planets in Capricorn and three in Pisces helps to ground and structure your artistic venture. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

The Queen of Disks is the archetype of a mature, feminine earth-spirit. As such she is not very compatible with the fire and urgency that the Ram displays. Nevertheless if you find a way to funnel your passion into practical, hard work, combined with a healthy, sensible diet, much can be achieved.

h TAURUS

BY GISELA

k LEO

c SAGITTARIUS

l VIRGO

d CAPRICORN

The Queen of Wands symbolises the archetype of compassion and care. She is aware of her power, but she is also wholehearted and sincere. With her by your side you are able to put yourself into others’ shoes and positive, nurturing relationships can bring much joy and fulfilment.

When the Tower Tarot card appears you are faced with sudden challenges and change that may turn your daily routine into chaos. It may upset your need for stability and security. Your plans could be disrupted and you most likely react with resentment. The sooner you adapt to the new circumstances the less distress you experience.

The Judgement Tarot card reflects on self-evaluation and your true inner calling, which must come from an open-hearted and unconditionally loving place to be constructive. If you appoint your hyper-critical, fault-finding ego as judge, you won’t be able to make a truthful appraisal of your abilities and you can’t awaken to new possibilities.

i GEMINI

a LIBRA

The Hanged Man portrays an inner struggle and you may feel stuck in an undesirable situation. It may also remind you of other times when certain restrictions and limitations made you very aware of your own ‘hangups’. Since we all have them, it is best to allow humbling realisations to show you a bigger, better and brighter perspective.

Recent events might have caused some internal discord and with the 5 of Swords drawn you may feel trapped in negative thinking. Friday in particular may be a difficult day for you. You might be able to soothe your mind if you consider how you would counsel your best friend if they would feel like you do now. Then just adhere to your advice.

j CANCER

b SCORPIO

The Prince of Disks affirms your right and need to feel secure. With him by your side you excel in your determination and capacity to do the hard yakka that is needed. You prefer to stick to tried and true methods, but a bit of innovation may save you from too much drudgery.

The 6 of Swords values team-work and cooperation. Imagine what would happen if you start thinking about what you have in common with the people around you, rather than dwelling painfully on the points where you differ. This different way of thinking provides a pathway for moving away from who you used to be towards who you want to be.

The Emperor Tarot card focuses on fulfilling your vision in a structured, practical way. Therefore you may have to step into a leadership role, even though you may feel reluctant because you despise hierarchies. Ponder how you could manifest benevolent leadership which serves and empowers everyone involved.

The aim of the Temperance Tarot card is to integrate and balance all the little paradoxes and polar opposites of your wants and needs. As such it is the quest for fulfilment as an individual. Your willingness to conform is falling away in favour of expressing your personal uniqueness.

e AQUARIUS

With the Queen of Cups drawn you may experience moments of deep peace and oneness as you immerse yourself in nature. These encounters nurture your overall acceptance of what is, and herald the gift of great compassion for the human condition, including your own. From this place you have so much to give…

f PISCES

When the Devil Tarot card appears the time is ripe to investigate how you make yourself a prisoner of your own choices. Therefore check out which of your habits are counter-productive and keep you stuck in unwanted situations. Take stock, consider your options and then take concentrated action on the road to real satisfaction.

SUN 23 FEB 10AM - 4PM WHAT TO EXPECT: Modern retro. Son takes the vintage R & B style with soul influences adding digital beats and synths over acoustic instruments. Curiously, none of the track titles use upper case letters on which Son plays almost every instrument. It is an album that does not dominate the listener, instead, it complements the listener’s space.

This week's recommendation

ALBUM TITLE: aloha ARTIST: Son Little RELEASED: January 2020 GENRE: Rhythm & Blues, Soul BIO: Singer-songwriter and producer Son Little hails

from Pennsylvania. aloha, his 3rd album was written in only 8 days after a bunch of demos got cooked in a computer glitch.

WHAT WE LIKE: Upon the creative process for aloha Son commented that "letting go can be a scary prospect... (it) opens up space for something new in your life." Perhaps the letting go and the making of space was the computer glitch creating a scramble for material, perhaps it was Son allowing someone else to produce aloha. Enter producer Renaud Letang (Feist, Manu Chao), allowing the intimacy and soul of the work to be easily found with interesting nuances on tracks and transitions. The digital beats, synths, and effects are very human and subtly balanced low in the mix to retain the warmth of the music. With a voice so silky and sublime, he does not need to growl or power into the mic with his lyrics covering, mostly, life's ups and downs. On vinyl, the warm and crackle will most likely enhance aloha a further notch up. STANDOUT TRACKS: hey rose, about her. again., belladonna PERFECT FOR: Dancing slowly. Letting go to let the music grow on you.

O BOOKS FOR Y

This week's review

TITLE: Trick Mirror AUTHOR: Jia Tolentino NUMBER OF PAGES: 304 EST. READ TIME:6 hours 48 minutes PRICE: $27.95 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Trick Mirror is an exploration into

self delusion and how it intersects every part of our lives. Jia Tolentino investigates how self delusion has affected her own journey as a writer and human being through anecdotes and some self reflection. But the success of Trick Mirror comes from the real world references as to how we are being shaped and the power we hold in fooling ourselves.

WHO IT'S FOR: Anyone who is finding living in the internet selfie age a little baffling and uncomfortable.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: As we continue to move

forward as a world addicted to the increasing advances in technology, and with no real guidelines as to how we should be interacting with it, Trick Mirror is an interesting roadblock to stop and assess how we can convince ourselves of possessing identities that don’t belong to us. We are in many ways caught up in a perpetual cycle of fake news, sponsored content and instagram posts. Jia Tolentino is masterful in highlighting the danger of a culture that revolves around self.

NOTABLE QUOTES: "I’ve been thinking about five

intersecting problems: first, how the internet is built to distend our sense of identity; second, how it encourages us to overvalue our opinions; third, how it maximizes our sense of opposition; fourth, how it cheapens our understanding of solidarity; and, finally, how it destroys our sense of scale.”

DEAR KEENWA,

I recently had the joy of attempting to rent out my studio after the long-time tenant took a bad trip. So far, they're yet to return. I'm still suffering from 'Gumtree' night terrors. Uuuugh. It ain't easy being a Northern Rivers Landowner. You might be interested in knowing that the tenancy laws have recently changed so that stating "'property not suitable for dogs'" is an act of discrimination. So I nearly went to prison for my long hair allergy, and shrill barking PTSD condition. I'm also a native wildlife advocate. Tell me, when is something considered personal preference, and when is it prejudice? - Tomato Tomuhtoh

DEAR TOMATO TOMUHTOH,

Google Doctor defines the diff. as one being illegal, the other not. I'm not sure which is which. Meaning, do what most peeps will do from now on, which is say nothing about your preference for vegan eating meditators, and just don't message the dog lovers back. Although, have you heard about some of those rainbow canines in The Shire? They can remove ticks from the backs of their single owners, man.

DEAR KEENWA,

Valentine's Day. Again. I'm yet to find a man capable of conscious relating in The Shire, one who can readily embrace their shadow, make ''I'' statements and basically do anything more than the bare minimum to get laid. It seems the ones who can, are already in quite complex poly triangles (with definite primary partners). Does the male ego need to hold a woman's hand to even think about evolving, so i should persist dating and grace somebody with the hard yakka, or does this divine man indeed not exist outside of David Deida novels? - St Vagina

DEAR ST VAGINA,

Here's an effective idea that a lot of people may moan about. Simply refuse to relate. Like, simply do not be available for anything less than the God himself, Mr David. Imagine all that spare energy you will have to put into yourself, your empire, and your legacy without the dsitraction of the drama of immature projections. Forget about those measly breadcrumbs and focus on the whole freshly baked loaf. If every woman does this, and does it well, there be some serious incentive for voluntary evolution right there. I'm in, if you are.

LOOKING FOR STAFF? WE CAN HELP!

TELL US WHERE YOU’RE FROM, AND HOW YOU FOUND YOURSELF IN BYRON? I was born in Winchester England. My Father’s family are Morrocan and my Mum’s side were Spanish gypsies. Not surprisingly I found myself in Byron after years of travelling the world and Australia. I have lived here now for 18 years. WHAT ARE YOUR KEY BUSINESS AND PERSONAL INTERESTS? I own and operate a personal training studio and Ninja Play centre in the industrial estate. My #1 purpose is to help others live healthier lives. I also compete in national and international Ninja Warrior and OCR races, with 4 world titles this year. YOU HAVE BEEN DESCRIBED AS A "POCKET ROCKET" - WHERE DOES THAT COME FROM? My huge height of 5ft and endless energy! But since finding out last year in the USA what pocket rocket meant, we changed my Ninja name to Motherwarrior. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MUSIC? Ministry of Sound for workouts, Latin music on weekends, and some good 80’s disco tracks – Flashdance is a favourite. I also enjoy music with powerful and good lyrics, and Michael Franti has some great ones. COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE – “I LOVE …. my boys, sunrises, stars, sunsets, the ocean and the bush – and I love sharing my knowledge and passion for the beautiful place I call home - Byron Bay. Oh, and the Byron Bazaar!"

IF YOU DON'T FIND A STAFF MEMBER WITHIN 2 WEEKS, WE WILL RUN THIRD WEEK FREE OF CHARGE BOOKING DEADLINE - MIDNIGHT MONDAY - PUBLISHED THURSDAY

To book call 0487 003 765 or email hello@byronbazaar.com

IF YOU WENT TO A FANCY-DRESS PARTY, WHO WOULD YOU GO AS, AND WHY? A tomb raider. It would be an awesome job, so I would dress as that. BYRON IS RENOWNED FOR ITS WILD TURKEYS - HAVE YOU EVER HAD A BRUSH TURKEY ENCOUNTER? I’ve trained with a few turkeys - big breasted men! And I have chased a few up the lighthouse track and around the pass, where I do a lot of outdoor training. Head over to www.lisaparkes.com to see how you could become a ninja warrior too.
