Tricky Trivia Answers - Questions on page 13 4. 5. 6. 7.

C, CANTANKEROUS. FALSE, LONDON. C, 88. B, CATS.

8. B, SURGICAL. 9. C, AVOCET. 10.C, APPLE BRANDY. As usual, I have an audience. There’s Kev the kookaburra sitting on the fence - leading the band, laughing out loud at my charcoaling technique, eyeing off any burnt scraps that may be coming his way. Baz the butcherbird is close by, warbling in tune. Gav the golden whistler is – well – whistling, as he flits between the gardenia bushes. And high in the spotted gum tree, Raving raven is keeping the rhythm section on the beat - aaah aaah ohhhhhh, aaah aaah ohhhhhh. Unfortunately, tonight there’s some uninvited guests at the evening’s orchestral manoeuvres. Suffolk Park’s black cockatoos have landed next door, all screeching their reversing truck impersonations at random intervals. More punk rock than trad jazz, so I’m taking the burnt snags back inside. I mention all this, not because I want to impress you with my outdoor cooking expertise or my intimate knowledge of “Gould’s Birds of Australia”, but because it leads me to discuss twittering of another kind. I’ve been reading about Jack Dorsey, the creator of Twitter. Asked how he came up with the name for the social media phenomenon, he said – “In 2006 we came across the word twitter, and it was just perfect. The definition was “a short burst of inconsequential information”, and “chirps from birds”. And that's exactly what the product was”. Could Jack have possibly envisaged that such inconsequential chirping could amass over 320 million users worldwide, tweeting 500 million times a day – turning him into a billionaire many times over?! Donald Trump is certainly a keen tweeter, with about 70 million followers. But that only just gets him into the top ten of the twitterati. Annoyingly for Trump, number one is Barack Obama with over 112 million followers. Then follows Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lady Gaga, Ellen DeGeneres, YouTube, and finally Donald rounding out the top ten. All entertainers in their own way. Of course, many of their followers fancy themselves as entertainers too – or at least, well researched commentators. Following the laws of the viral multiplier effect, our airwaves and networks become clogged with the resultant retweeting and chatter. The original tweet is lost in the ensuing cockatoo cacophony. Twitter says it can handle 18 quintillion user accounts. That’s 18 billion billion – about the net worth of Dorsey!! If we think our airwaves are slowing down now, just wait – the environmental limits will be tested soon enough. Today is TBT in social media land - Throwback Thursday. A time to chill out and reminisce – two of my favourite pastimes. If I can just come up with a handle that is unique and easy to remember, and unlock my never used account, I might become a tweep. And Kev just started laughing again! #chilloutwithbyronbazaar Tony, Byron Bazaar

This week's mantra FIRST, FORGIVE YOURSELF.

Between raging fires and war mongering, (not to mention all of the personal, private challenges we each individually face) it’s hard not to feel angry, overwhelmed, disempowered and pessimistic. And for many of us... incredibly guilty or ashamed. (That you should be doing more. That you should have already done more. Or even that you should be telling people about what you have done. Or that you aren't allowed to also be experiencing joy during hard times.) Do you know what that adds up to? A shit ton of shame.

VOLUNTEER BEACH SURVEY OFFICERS

Positive Change for Marine Life are seeking volunteer Beach Survey Officers to help coordinate fortnightly beach cleans and data collation. Visit PCFML.ORG.AU and click “TAKE ACTION” for more information.

And for the record: Shame is not an effective way of creating change in ourselves (or in others.) If you want to create lasting change, accountability is important, but so is kindness. So if you are carrying around the weight of guilt or shame during these already heavy times, if you're feeling powerless or paralysed, that's okay. That’s normal. If you are frozen, turn inward and forgive yourself first. Start by shedding the shame and honoring the goodness within you that wants to do well. Because self- forgiveness gives us permission to evolve (and do better) and to be our very best selves. Shame does none of that. You are good and I love you.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

LEADING UP TO THE FULL MOON IN LEO

(Saturday) Lady Venus moves out of the watery Piscean realms into courageous, adventurous and self-directed Aries where she resides until early March. For the next 10 days we have Venus and Mars, the archetypes for male and female energy, in fire signs. They are ready for a new perspective, and there’s hope for decisive, passionate action to follow. The Full Moon, also in a fire sign highlights this reset opportunity. Straight after the very energising Full Moon, Venus unites with Chiron, the archetype for woundedness and healing. This may be confronting and painful for people with planets in the early degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn. Be gentle with yourself and avoid rash reactions, even when it feels counterintuitive. On the upside this aspect offers a chance to celebrate diversity of opinions, beliefs and vision. The choice is yours and what you focus on naturally expands. If you can’t get any healing insight into these matters on Monday there is another opportunity to find more inner harmony on Wednesday… For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

The 8 of Wands increases your need for fast and exciting action; you may feel fired up a lot and impatient! Be mindful about how much you take on, and to curb your over-reactivity. If you release a bit of the urgency and pace yourself just a little, this can be a week of great progress on quite a few levels.

h TAURUS

The Princess of Cups is gentle, impressionable and rather idealistic. With her by your side you might feel very sensitive to your surroundings. When that happens your natural reaction is to retreat into the safety of your own inner world. However you may also realise the healing power of openness and vulnerability during this week.

d CAPRICORN

The 7 of Swords’ energy may feel like a direct attack. It bruises the ego. Especially around the Full Moon time you might find yourself strongly reacting to a situation and dropping into quite a negative and maybe self-sabotaging state. Be particularly aware of statements you start with, ‘Yes but’; they only make you insist on unyielding thoughts.

The Ace of Cups symbolises the big gift of the open heart. This is the week to truly get in touch with your innate sensitivity and the voice of your intuition that is guiding you. This is not the loud, critical voice, but a much softer, wiser and more compassionate whisper that comes straight from your heart.

a LIBRA

With the 10 of Swords drawn you may hit a low point this week. Can you allow yourself to just feel it or do you have to have heavy judgement about it? The less you criticise where you are at, the easier you find the energy to move on. If you find yourself caught up in useless ‘what-if’ worst-fear scenarios, you only inflame the situation.

The Strength Tarot card, in particular with the fiery Venus and Mars energy, gives you extra oomph when relating. You are less willing to compromise for the sake of peace and you show clearly where you stand. Your renewed passion for life may spark a creative, self-directed new endeavour.

j CANCER

With the 8 of Cups drawn you have been hanging on to habitual non-generative relationship patterns for too long. This may have such a draining influence on you that it is difficult to get motivated right now. Don’t gloss over your emotional exhaustion, know your limits and then find some way to give a little r&r to yourself.

The Prince of Disks and Cancer consciousness understand each other very well. They both focus on security and stability. They stick to the tried and true, yet they are not timid and their determination makes them unstoppable. This is the week to patiently chip away on duty after duty and to keep in mind that exactly because you lay solid foundations, bigger things will follow.

b SCORPIO

The Queen of Swords is astute and does not hold back her truth. At times she can be shocking and confronting. With her by your side you get to the heart of the matter really fast, as if you have x-ray vision, and action happens swiftly. You treasure authenticity, it makes life simpler and you don’t have to second-guess.

The symbol for Capricorn is a mountain goat that climbed past competitors and reached the top. Now it’s by itself up there, looking into the distant future… The 6 of Swords points out that you fare much better if you cultivate a team-spirit to navigate the highs and lows of this week. Difficulties can be overcome through conscious communication and an innovative group approach to old problems.

e AQUARIUS

The Knight of Wands is the bringer of change and he invites you to take a leap of faith. Now is the time for courageous and decisive action. If you charge forward you land exactly where you want to be and in hindsight you may wonder why you have been hesitating for so long.

f PISCES

Until Saturday Lady Venus, the love-goddess is still in your sign. In combination with the Prince of Wands drawn, it is a good idea to rise to the challenge of courageously showing where your heart is at. Romance and creativity are favoured, and the chances that you get exactly what you want are very high.

O BOOKS FOR Y

This week's review

TITLE: Bringing Up Bébé AUTHOR: Pamela Druckerman NUMBER OF PAGES: 432 EST. READ TIME: 5 hours 18 minutes PRICE: $27.95 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Pamela Druckerman moves to Paris

for her husband. In time they decide to have a baby, something she never imagined doing in another country, but does it anyway. She soon begins to notice that French children are not like the children she’s seen in America or the UK. There are very little toddler tantrums, babies sleep through the night and eat fish and vegetables at the dinner table with the rest of the family with no complaint. Pamela begins to wonder what kind of magic powers the French possess and decides to investigate the ways in which they parent so she can mimic them in her own motherhood journey. What she finds on her mission to achieve perfect parenting is both fascinating and funny.

WHO IT'S FOR: This book is definitely for parents. Ideally parents with small children.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Although I found that some

of the parenting methods and tactics described in Bringing Up Bébé didn’t align with my own parenting philosophies I found Pamela’s journey thoroughly entertaining. If anything the book is an ode to the way in which mothers operate with their own individual rhythms and that nobody should judge others for their choices.

NOTABLE QUOTES: Yet the French have managed to be

involved without becoming obsessive. They assume that even good parents aren't at the constant service of their children, and that there's no need to feel guilty about this. "For me, the evenings are for the parents." one Parisian mother tells me. "My daughter can be with us if she wants, but it's adult time.” Review written by Jessie Hilton @jessieahilton

This week's recommendation

ALBUM TITLE: Hurry Up and Wait ARTIST: Dune Rats RELEASED: January 2020 GENRE: Punk-pop BIO: The Dunies hail from Brisbane, began as a duo and became a trio. This is their 3rd album.

WHAT TO EXPECT: A nippy, 28min 47 sec of fun pop-punk. If you dig it, you'll dig it on the first listen. Instant gratification box ticked.

WHAT WE LIKE: It is energising to sing-along to lyrics

that are not heavy with the strains of climate change, geopolitics, and relationship blues. Instead you sing-along with a smile about bad habits, having no plans for the day, screwing things up, being late and then being later, big nights, ignoring your voicemails and partying. At times we should all think less and live more, and that is as spiritual as the album gets. However on The Skids the life scenarios of fate, karma and “it couldn't happen to me" are sung with smirks and a wink. Oh, the album artwork is just as much WTF with letters made of holey cheese and a rat on a hamster wheel looking at more cheese, yum. The good times, let’s get loose vibe is captured in the minimalist engineering and production style. The lads are totally comfortable being themselves smashing out the vocals, guitar, bass, and drums. Musically they are tight and polished. The final track's title says it's all: Mountains Rocks Come and Go But Aussie Pub Rock Lives On (Forever). Yeah the boys.

STANDOUT TRACKS: No Plans, Crazy, Bad Habits PERFECT FOR: Another big night. Festival mosh pits. Reminding us to “party, and bullshit”.

LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: Skeggs, Offspring, Blink-182, Hockey Dad.

DEAR KEENWA, 2020. Wow. Is it just me, or is it super intense? I write this from hospital where I was admitted for drug-induced psychosis after dabbling in a fair few chemically spiritual substances at a festival I attended. Directly after a ten day silent vipassana retreat. Yep, you read that right. I totally didn't see that coming! Who would have thought toxifying my system and mixing with 130, 000 other peeps auras after blowing smoke up my own ego for so many days would do that? - Buddah and the Beats

DEAR BUDDAH AND THE BEATS, Well, fancy that. It must have been the planetary alignment that did it. You know in some cultures, the crazy guy is actually revered and respected as a messenger from the spirit world, and nurtured by elders to make it through the other side so that they may help others. I'm not sure an irresponsible, Shopify spiritual bypassing junkie would be of service to anyone.

DEAR KEENWA, I really need to break-up with my boyfriend. We fell deeply in love, but he is a nightmare to live with. I can't stand how he packs the dishwasher (dude, ever heard of rinsing) and the heavy footed way he walks around the house. Also, why does he have to gag himself when he brushes his teeth? Tongue scrapers are made for a purpose. I'll have to hustle to make the rent on my own...but what will I do about the tick sitch? We live in the Byron Hills. Bush everywhere. Whose gunna pull those cheeky, little buggers out safely? No neighbours for miles. - Ticky Sitch

DEAR TICKY SITCH, I managed to train my dog to do it. He is an absolute genius of a creature, a real rainbow canine. Been vegan since birth. But can you belive the discrimination he receives when we look for rentals in The Shire?

Ellie Corley BUSINESS COACH

TELL US WHERE YOU’RE FROM AND HOW YOU ENDED UP IN BYRON? I am originally from the UK, near Cambridge. I graduated as a filmmaker and worked at the BBC for a while on Top Gear and the Asian Network. One day my husband said “why don’t we have an adventure I’ll work, you write a book or something.” So, here we are in Byron! He is working on the ELVIS movie - the book is unfinished.

New Jobs ADDED Weekly

ASSISTANT MANAGER / PRODUCE MANAGER

YOU CURRENTLY DO SOME WORK WITH LOCAL ENTREPRENEURS - WHAT DOES THAT INVOLVE? The biggest challenges for small businesses are understanding their customer, finding their unique selling point, managing their time, and of course funding. We coach around 300 very different businesses, helping them to manage those challenges. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT BYRON, WHAT WOULD IT BE? My old CEO recently said to me ‘Does Byron really exist? I thought that was a fake place on Instagram.’ I think in a way we have overshared Byron's attributes, and sadly it's on 'the must see’ bus. This is a challenge for the nature of the place.

Santos Organics Mullumbimby is looking for an experienced and hard-working Assistant Manager with strong customer service focus, confident in sales and able to work 5 days, 38 hours/week (incl. Saturdays).

COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE – “I LOVE …. to eat Marmite (sorry Vegemite lovers!). “It’s the growing up spread you never grow out of."

Santos Organics Byron Bay is looking for an experienced and hard-working Produce Manager with strong customer service and sales focus, able to work full-time, 38 hours/week.

IF YOU WENT TO A FANCY-DRESS PARTY, WHO WOULD YOU GO AS, AND WHY? Uma Thurman. Because she is beautiful, powerful and I loved the role she played in Kill Bill.

For more information visit SANTOSORGANICS.COM.AU/EMPLOYMENT

BYRON IS RENOWNED FOR ITS WILD BRUSH TURKEYS - HAVE YOU ENCOUNTERED ANY? Yes, we love a Turkey in our house. "Petal" our Northern Terrier dog does a pretty good job of chasing them off - it's her daily Pilates exercise.
