FILM FIENDS WILL BE HEADING

to the Mullum Flickerfest & Byron All Shorts 2020 from Thursday to Saturday at Mullum Civic Hall. Now in its 29th year, there'll be short films from Byron, Australia and beyond reeling onto the screen. To search films and times, punch in iq.org.au

All that film talk reminds me that Paul Hogan and Strop recently filmed a beer commercial for the Hotel Brunswick Classic Brew in the boozer of the same name. This Saturday from noon at Hotel Brunswick it's the Classic Brew Launch Party. There'll be a kids club with face painting to keep families happy plus Micka Scene and the Dirty Channel sing the soundtrack. A free BBQ is on too, and with all profits donated to the fire relief fund this launch party is worthy of an Oscar. Hitting rewind to Friday now as Flying Carpet Concerts are hosting acoustic performances from Stephanie Cherote, Ashleigh Bo and Maddy Boud. Set in a tropical farmhouse in the hinterland this sounds like a special night. Search for tix on eventbrite.com.au Talk about having too many options, Wild Marmalade are also playing on Friday at Byron Bay Brewery. Expect 4 hours of spontaneous dance music with their legendary drums 'n' didge sound, all for zilch $'s. And Saturday is the night to get your container drawer organised and sign up to a pyramid scheme at the Northern, who are hosting Tuppaware Party. They're a band, are possibly plastic-free and with a probable nude swim after the gig your dreams may come true. Come Wednesday, Films for Change Byron are screening A Ballerina's Tale that tells Misty Copeland's story to become the 1st African-American woman to be named principal dancer of the legendary American Ballet Theatre. With chocolate tasting from Chow Cacao and live music from Angie Hudson it is worth grabbing a ticket. Google: Films for Change Byron to grab one. Lap up those social manoeuvres.

I’M A LOGICAL PERSON – I LIKE PEOPLE TO USE RATIONAL

arguments, based on facts, when they have a discussion. I used to get my daily dose of facts by reading newspapers, or watching the nightly news. If all I wanted was opinions, I could log on to twitter or facebook. These days, news stories seem to blend opinions with facts – confuse them even. And yes, that’s my OPINION, even though I think it could be proven! Nothing wrong with having an opinion - opinions can be fun – entertaining. Look at the tennis. Opinions everywhere. Serena Williams has won 23 grand slam singles finals – that’s a provable fact. That makes her the greatest women’s tennis player of all time – that’s an opinion. Lots of people probably agree, but that doesn’t make it a fact – it actually can’t be proven. If it’s down to who has won the most grand slam singles titles, then that’s Margaret Court at 24. Does that make her the greatest, and Serena #2? Maybe. Roger Federer has won the most men’s grand slam singles titles (20 at the time of writing – maybe 21 this weekend). Nadal is number 2 at 19, and Djokovic at 16 is number 3. The amazing thing is they are all still playing, and against one another. Who’s the best? Well, the ATP rankings say it’s not Federer - #1 Nadal, #2 Djokovic, #3 Federer. If Fed’s the greatest, why isn’t he always #1? Because despite the facts, who is the GOAT is all a matter of opinion – and it can change each year, and each time they play.

So, tennis blends opinions with facts. How about science - we all know that water boils at 100 °C, or 212 °F, right? Actually, this fact can also change. The boiling point of water depends on the atmosphere - how high above sea level you may be. The higher you are, the lower the boiling point. (Is that why you can’t get a decent cup of coffee on a plane?!). Secondly, it depends on the purity of the water. Water that contains impurities (such as salt) boils at a higher temperature than pure water. So, this fact can change, depending on circumstance. Mmmmm - a flexible fact! My birth date is a fact. No discussion. But my age changes every day, every second – even as I’m writing this I’ve just gotten older – bugger!! Too confusing?. Maybe all facts are opinions after all?! My head is starting to hurt - I think I need to go back to my philosophy course and ponder the question of truth. I’ll get back to you with the answer to fact v. opinion – stay tuned - stay chilled. This week's mantra

YOUR INTENTION BECOMES YOUR INHERITANCE. Reminder: Who you are is a changing proposition. Don’t feel stuck. If there’s some way you’ve been pigeonholed or even cajoled into a role that isn’t really yours... shake it off. Mix it up. Who you are is entirely up to you. This life is yours. If you want to write yourself into a new story, you are free to do so. Pull up a fresh page. Update your bio. Forecast some future feels for yourself! What you dream up for yourself now becomes your reality next. So what will it be? If you’re not sure where to start, if intention setting and manifestation makes you feel frozen with indecision, try this: Spend 10 minutes writing the bio of future you. Maybe it’s 5 or 10 years or 30 or 40. Here are some questions to consider as you write your future bio. As Mark Nepo put it, “true questions are carried like lanterns we swing in the dark to help us find our way.” So let these questions light the way for your future self. What do you value? What matters most? Who will matter most to you? And who will you matter to most? What makes your cells sing? What makes you come alive? What will you stand for? What can you offer the world? How can you be generous? What can you share? What would be rewarding? What would living a brave life look like? Take some time to think about what dreams you can bestow upon your future self. Because your intentions become your inheritance.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

THE SATURN/PLUTO CONJUNCTION IN

Capricorn which happened more than two weeks ago is still strongly influencing the current astro climate. Its flavour is serious and it points out responsibilities while fundamentally restructuring our society. You may have to muster enormous discipline and endurance, depending on where this conjunction sits in your personal chart. If you have planets between 22 and 25 degrees of Capricorn, Cancer, Aries or Libra you might be in for a challenging time. A profound re-birth is taking place... From Saturday onwards Venus, in imaginative, sensitive and often otherworldly Pisces, forms a sextile to Pluto (exact on Sunday) and Saturn (exact on Tuesday). These transits are essentially positive but often they involve dealing with our shadow to get to the light. A healthy and loving relationship may gain from the intensity. However, for a connection that is built on the rocky grounds of doubt or deceit, safety and control issues may surface and have to be dealt with. Mercury moves into the Piscean realm on Monday. The mind is least rational here, but highly creative and often a bit dreamy. This year we are graced with an extra-long period of this mind-altering and mystical influence because Mercury will retrograde while in Pisces by mid-February. On Wednesday Mercury forms an exciting sextile to Uranus in Taurus, which will happen two more times during the retro-stint. From now on until around the equinox (22/3), is the time to experiment with unusual and inventive ideas, and to try things out that have been unrealised possibilities for a long time. The universe gives plenty of feedback during this period about what is feasible and what not. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

The Temperance Tarot card asks you to avoid any extreme reactions or hasty decisions. It is not limiting your personal freedom but rather helping you to integrate seeming polarities and paradoxes into your life. It teaches you how to move beyond what should be, and how to make inner peace with what is.

The Empress Tarot card emphasises feminine leadership straight from the heart. As you combine your love for people and nature with your inner wisdom, you find trust in your ability to manage your life without trying to control others. Expressing your tenderness can bring great joy.

c SAGITTARIUS

The Ace of Wands can be likened to a huge energy force that is ready to erupt and manifest itself. You may feel extremely fired-up about many situations and issues in your life. It is important that you manage and streamline this momentum into the most worthwhile cause or direction. Don’t let yourself be distracted by small stuff.

When the Devil Tarot card appears the time is ripe to explore how some habits actually can keep you imprisoned in behaviour or a lifestyle that does not nurture your body/mind/soul. You may have to deal with a shadow part of yourself that limits your choices in relationships, wellbeing or finances.

The Prince of Wands is confident, daring and adventurous. With him by your side you won’t sweat the small stuff. Powerful new experiences want to enrich your life and your creativity is at an all-time high, while your inner judge is luckily missing in action. This is the perfect time to release yourself from old limitations.

a LIBRA

e AQUARIUS

With the 10 of Cups drawn your cup is full and overflowing. Your radiant joy and serenity can be an inspiration to anyone who comes in contact with you. Don’t underestimate the power of upliftment you provide to friends, family and even strangers.

j CANCER

The 9 of Wands speaks of great strength and resilience that helps you to navigate the deep undercurrents of this time. It relates to the combination of physical, emotional and mental strength, united to invigorate you when you meet a challenge. No need to run, hide, defend or collapse!

The Tower Tarot card heralds sudden change that may result in momentary chaos and upheaval. It may be a challenge but it can also just be an awakening. You may have compromised too much and forced yourself into unauthentic behaviour because of your need to keep pleasing others. This is the time to return to your true self.

b SCORPIO

The 8 of Wands advises quick action and reaction, straight from your gut-feeling. Avoid analysing, strategising and trying to wait things out. If any opportunity falls in your lap, it must be realised straight away. With that in mind you communicate quickly, efficiently and effectively.

With the 8 of Swords drawn you may feel trapped in an unwanted situation and it is easy to get lost in negative thought and uncertainty. If doubt cancels your selfdetermination right now, wait things out, but make sure that you nurture and strengthen your self-worth and belief in yourself while you pause.

The Queen of Swords does not abide by political correctness, tradition or social norm. She gets to the heart of any matter without pretence. With her supporting your honesty and astuteness you might ruffle a few feathers this week, but it may actually clear the air.

f PISCES

The Knight of Wands would like to inspire you to take a leap of faith and move forward even though you are not completely sure where you are going to land. He offers a can-do attitude instead of hesitation and losing momentum. Get inspired by his passion and vision, and make things happen.

O BOOKS FOR Y

This week's review

TITLE: The Dutch House AUTHOR: Ann Patchett NUMBER OF PAGES: 352 EST. READ TIME: 5 hours 44 minutes PRICE: $22.50 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: The Dutch House follows the lives of

brother and sister, Danny and Maeve, over the course of five decades. After they are tossed from their beloved childhood home, an architectural marvel, by their tornado of a stepmother, Danny and Maeve start a new life. One in which they only rely on one another. But as their past begins to crawl back into their present the siblings will be guided towards a new reality. Forcing them to enter The Dutch House once more with fresh eyes and burdened with heavy memories.

WHO IT'S FOR: Those who enjoy reading family

dramas. Think Ian McEwan’s Atonement or Emily Bitto’s The Strays.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: This book totally

transported me in a way that books so rarely do nowadays. Ann Patchett has a talent for creating characters you can see in your minds eye. Like a film projected before you, The Dutch House explores the perplexity of childhood and the power of memory. It left me with the questions: Who holds a memory? Who is responsible for it? And can we ever trust recollection? This book dazzled me and left my heart with melancholy for a life I never lived.

NOTABLE QUOTES: “I see the past as it actually was,"

Maeve said. She was looking at the trees. "But we overlay the present onto the past. We look back through the lens of what we know now, so we're not seeing it as the people we were, we're seeing it as the people we are, and that means the past has been radically altered.” Review written by Jessie Hilton @jessieahilton

DEAR KEENWA, I recently received a face reading at a local spirituality festival. It was fascinating. Liberating. Revolutionary. Basically, the therapist taught me that the lips and tongue are directly correlated to our genitals. You following me? I won't spell out which part matches which, in respect of gender neutrality, but I imagine a world where everybody practices this in reverence for their incredible bodies. I had to re-mortgage my house to pay for the honour of that reading (what's ownership anyway right?!) but feel like it has given me more than enough to begin teaching muchneeded classes to as many people as possible. This is a call out for all in The Shire to join. - Face Value

DEAR FACE VALUE, I imagine this is a mash-up between naked, partnered, and facial yoga? Sign me up! Someone once read Donald Trump's face and found his puffy eyes to represent unshed tears, making him an unemotional being; and his forced eyebrow lines, a person focused on being exact. I truly wonder what would happen if we grabbed him by his tongue and released any blockages he may be having on his spiritual journey right there.

DEAR KEENWA, My youngest child has just started Kindy. I feel like I am finally at a time in my life with some breathing space to truly find myself after all these years. Don't get me wrong, natural birthing, breastfeeding, and playgroup have been major parts of my soul's evolution. And yes I am busy with packing organic school lunches, and attending craft duty consciously, but any ideas on what else I can do to assist my growth in between? Who am I becoming this year? School Hours Soul Journey

DEAR SCHOOL HOURS SOUL JOURNEY, Please see the above letter. You're welcome.

musos, Nick's got his recipe down to a T with his relaxing voice and simple guitar and percussion combination. His songs are honest glimpses of his life. When asked, he said this album was a closing of some big life occurrences, a final address before moving on completely. You may hear threads of sadness, relating to a battle with depression that Nick is being positive and hopeful about, bringing the message that it's not engulfing.

WHAT WE LIKE: This album starts off with its loudest

song, Make Me Feel; a more upbeat anti-love song. It's laden with electric guitar and drums, giving heavier tones to this next chapter in Nick's musical evolution. From there each song is promptly summarised in its title. Highway has a slower electric guitar and eerie backing vocals, perfectly painting images of a windswept desert highway. Slowdance similarly follows it's title; slow, beautiful and melting in honey. Overall, it's an album with it's own gentle glow. It'll give you those subtle feels for the moments that should be remembered in slow motion.

STANDOUT TRACK: Make Me Feel. PERFECT FOR: Starting the day with a smile, a tune to fill the space between lovers, watching a peaceful sunset or, for some of the slower songs, driving in the rain.

LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: Angus Stone, Pat Tierney. Recommended by Delphi O'Heart.

LOOKING FOR STAFF? WE CAN HELP!

TELL US WHERE YOU’RE FROM AND HOW YOU FOUND YOURSELF IN BYRON? I’m born and raised in Los Angeles near Hollywood. I’ve lived in Australia for over 25 years off and on. Bondi was my first residential love, however in the 90’s I visited Byron Bay and it equally captured me. My husband and I made the move up in 2014 and we love living here. YOU HAVE SUCH A WIDE AND VARIED BACKGROUND, I’M NOT SURE WHAT TITLE TO GIVE YOU? Former Corporate Executive, I suppose the best current title would be "Consultant / Coachpreneur.” My key current business interest is Cunning Stunts. Our brands Nudge Nudge Wink Wink and CURIOUS are priorities for us and we are humbled by the positive impact they have had for our local community. After 25 years as a yogi, I’m about to start my Yoga Teacher Training and then I hope to incorporate that into my coaching and consulting business. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MUSIC TO LISTEN TO, DANCE TO, OR JUST CHILL TO? I am such a music lover that I don’t really have a favourite. For dancing, vocal deep house and disco are my go to’s. However, give me classic 70’s rock and proper Soul/Funk music from the late 60’s onward for most of my listening pleasure. BYRON IS RENOWNED FOR ITS WILD TURKEYS - HAVE YOU EVER WITNESSED THEM IN ACTION AT YOUR DANCE PARTIES? No kidding there is a bush turkey roaming in our back garden as I type this! Fortunately they don’t attend our parties, but I am amazed by their ability to fly vertically up - wow! IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT BYRON AND THE SURROUNDING AREA, WHAT WOULD IT BE? More affordable housing - especially rentals - that allow pets.

BOOKING DEADLINE - MIDNIGHT MONDAY - PUBLISHED THURSDAY
