returning to our charred forests and scorched landscapes? A few days of drenching rain and new green shoots are already peeking through the ashes, fresh leaves are bursting through the cindered bark, grasses exploding from forest floors. Nature is amazing. Nature is constantly learning, adapting, evolving. Recovery becomes as natural as the occasional devastation is unavoidable. Why do we humans seem to learn so little from our own bad experiences. Do we try to forget them, so we don’t have to revisit the pain? Are we too busy looking for people to blame, to get on with the rebuilding process? Are we not as smart as we think – destined to continually repeat past mistakes? Revisiting disasters as a means of learning and adapting is undoubtedly a good way to move forward. But surely the intelligent, mature response is to get on with implementing the recommendations, once the study is completed? After 57 formal public inquiries, reviews and royal commissions into bushfires and fire management over the past 80 years, we have more than enough hints at what needs to be done. Before we embark on another expensive, publicly funded study, can I suggest we first answer the following questions – • Who has the existing “To Do” list from the previous 57 inquiries? • What has been done, and what’s left to do? • How much money have we got to spend? And there you have it – briefing document for the Royal Commission all settled before the coming long weekend. I am sure that a few good research students at any university could then put this study together in a few weeks, including prioritising the final list.

Note I have not suggested reviewing, analysing or reporting on the operational rules of engagement for local, State and Federal governments. They already know how to do this. If the politics are parked and the wagging fingers put away, our elected officials might surprise us all with the maturity of their response. Like a good cheese evolves from a dodgy, acidic mix - once it’s heated, stirred and the waste is expelled, the remaining batch can mature into a tasty cheddar! Have I oversimplified the issue? - yes! Have I still made sense? - I believe so. Can we all just get on and do it? – (?). Tight hamstrings, busy mind, full schedule, shoestring budget, basketfuls of laundry, sink full of dishes, paintings that could use just one more stroke, poems that could be more elegant, work that could be stronger, timing that could be better. English drummer, producer and singer/songwriter released her 1st album in 2015 that drew comparisons to hip-hop royalty such as Missy Elliot and MIA. Incidentally, she is the daughter of Neil Barnes from pioneering dance group Leftfield, does not drink and is vegan. WHAT TO EXPECT: Georgia’s 2nd album Seeking Thrills (ST) is less hip-hop than her 1st. It is a credible balance of electro-pop with clubland heritage, with a human driving the beats instead of a computer. Expect 80's vibes and 90's dance euphoria bought up to date for 2020 with the influences of Chicago house. WHAT WE LIKE: Georgia's sound is her own and not a clichÊ manufactured pop-style to boost record sales and YouTube views. Her snazzy drumming patterns over rolling bass lines topped with lyrical tales of nights out around the dancefloor make for a fresh, energetic album. ST walks the path of future mainstream success, without selling out, partly thanks to staying true to it's club influences. Easily accessible: yes, top 40-banger territory: yes, crafted musicianship: yes. The fact Georgia drums, does the analog synth work herself and sings her own inspired lyrics gives the album audible warmth and emotional feeling. There are more than four to the floor wanderings on ST, with nods and winks to hip-hop and punk, and changing tempos that combine for layers of sophistication and creativity. speechwriter, senior and head speechwriter for the First Lady Michelle Obama and President Barack Obama, Sarah Hurwitz found herself longing to explore her faith and write a book about it. Surprising herself at her own desire to write a book about the religion she grew up with, Judaism, she took a long hard look at her journey with the faith and why she had a problem with it. After much research and some soul searching she found an understanding far more reaching than the stories she’d heard as a child in Hebrew School once a week. She found a place for the things she believed to be true and a way to beautifully weave them back into her life.
WHO IT'S FOR: Anyone who is curious about religion, even if you aren’t religious.
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: I have always been interested
in what attracts people to religion. Having no particular faith myself I look to others to see why they choose to live a life devoted to God and what exactly that entails in our modern world. What does it mean to be ‘religious’? Are there rules around it? Can you believe in a religion but not agree with everything that religion tells you you must believe? These are the questions that Sarah Hurwitz grapples with in this beautiful memoir. I loved every page of this book and would recommend it to anyone struggling to find connection and spiritual ties in the world’s often overwhelming climate.

TELL US WHERE YOU’RE FROM AND HOW YOU ENDED UP IN BRUNSWICK HEADS? I knew Bruns very well as I lived in Mullum from 1960 to 1968, doing all my secondary schooling there. My father was sergeant in charge of police during that time. I then moved to the Balearics Islands, in Mallorca, for nearly 40 years. In 2015 my husband died and I ended up making the decision to come back to Oz and begin a third, Granny, part of my life, and Bruns took me in.

But for my personal style I love the playfulness of Renoir, Berthe Morisot, Matisse because it’s fast and skillful and courageous, full of dynamic colour. I love to paint the human form. YOU ARE PREPARING FOR YOUR FIRST AUSTRALIAN SOLO EXHIBITION - TELL US WHAT WE SHOULD EXPECT TO SEE? Life: I always work from life. Colour: To me it’s the most important thing in a painting. Line: Beauty of line is imperative in drawing. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT BYRON WHAT WOULD IT BE? I would calm down the road traffic, but I have no idea how. IF YOU WENT TO A FANCY-DRESS PARTY WHO WOULD YOU GO AS AND WHY? I keep thinking of Frida Kahlo, perhaps because I love Mexican dress and the flowers she puts in her hair, AND she had monumental courage, which I admire above all! BYRON IS RENOWNED FOR ITS WILD BRUSH TURKEYS - HAVE YOU EVER PAINTED ONE? I have sketched many, using pen, watercolour and gouache, but I have never painted a picture of one. I often watch them and think about them, so it could happen one day. Check out Frances latest show at Clems Cargo in Brunswick Heads 1st - 26th February.
