THIS WEEK, IF YOU GET A GOLDIE

every time you hear “I can’t believe it’s Christmas” or when that Mariah Carey song plays, then you’ll have more coins than a pokie win. Speaking of winning, today, Thursday the 19th, it’s the Northern’s Xmas Mega Raffles so get your jingle mingles on and listen out for your winning numbers.

Wee

And top picks for NYE eats include the Three Blue Ducks where for $150 you’ll get canapés, mains and side, dessert plus free-flowing drinks, live music and it’s only $25 for the smaller ones. St. Elmo host a NYE Cocktail Party including a welcome cocktail, drinks, roaming canapés, live music with Niall Lochhead followed by DJ Kurt King to bust things loose. Bookings recommended via threeblueducks.com/ Byron and stelmodining.com For a family-friendly NYE get to Soul Street Byron Bay on Jonson St. Railway Park for a beaut of a street party with live music, artisan food, circus performers and a friendly vibe without the booze. Come the morning, take some self-care with the first sunrise of the new decade at First Sun 2020 at Byron’s Lighthouse. This free event includes an optional return shuttle bus or a guided walk to the top followed by meditation, relaxing music and yoga. Search FB: First Sun NYD Byron Bay If someone is getting hitched in 2020 then they’d do well to get to Byron Bay Wedding’s Venue Open Day on Sunday, 5th Jan. It’s the perfect excuse for lovers to tour the coast and hinterland, discovering dreamy venues to say, “I do.” Deets and inspo @byronbayweddings

If you did not win the ham or seafood tray then head to Byron Farmer’s Market on Monday 23rd from 7am to 11am at the Cavanbah. It’s early this week as there is no market on Boxing Day. 'Tis the Bangalow Christmas Eve Carnival from 5pm to 9pm the next day. Live music, street performers will be painting the main street red (and white) and Santa Claus is coming to town before his world pressie tour begins. Down the hill at Barrio, chef Fransisco Smoje has prepared a festive menu including seafood, porchetta and stone fruit trifle for a Christmas Eve Fiesta like no other. Due to recent fire damage, check the website for booking details barriobyronbay.com.au If it’s too ‘el schorchio’ for cooking then there are plenty of venues open for Christmas Day feasts. With four courses including a beverage package, there is a lot to like on The Balcony’s Xmas lunch lineup. The Italian is also a good bet with four courses and a dash of festivities. Book via balcony. com.au and theitalianbyronbay.com Over in Bruns, McGregors Family Carnival runs from midDec to late Jan right in town, right by the river. Now in its 64th year, expect classic fairground rides and the everpopular Housie tent. Also, vinyl collectors will know that Brunswick Heads Record Fair spins from the 28th Dec to 1st Jan at the Memorial Hall. Speaking of music, Boxing Day does not let us down with Lisa Hunt’s Forever Soul bringing the funk to the Beachy stage at 4:30pm. The vibe wanders onto Mullum’s Civic Hall on Sat 28th with Hawaii’s Mike Love’s reggae-inspired sounds coming to the ‘Bimby Massive. Tix: StickyTickets. "A little party never hurt nobody" and NYE is party hardy territory. Tough bits include picking where to go, and what to wear. The Falls Festival's, 31st Dec to 2nd Jan, lineup includes Halsey, Disclosure and Tash Sultana. Top picks for Byron Bay D-floors include a DJ set from Cut Copy at Locura, the 2020 Pool Party w/Club Raiders at Aquarius and Skeggs playing the Northern.

As the sun sets on the week, it’s time to tune in, turn on and rock out with Late for Woodstock at Hotel Brunswick on 5th Jan. Merry Christmas. Farewell 2010's, and hello 2020's.

Michael Jackson may have been be a bit of a singing / dancing freak, but he knew all change started at home. From his 1987 hit, “Man in the Mirror” I'm starting with the man in the mirror I'm asking him to change his ways And no message could have been any clearer If you want to make the world a better place Take a look at yourself, and then make a change

THIS IS OUR LAST ISSUE BEFORE THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY PERIOD. It seems like a good time to look back at the year - well, in this case, the last six months, since that’s how long I have been involved with the Bazaar.

Since June 2019 we have drawn your attention to some important issues – • • • • • • • •

the 50-year anniversary of the moon landing; the challenges facing bees; the ongoing fight between leprechauns, garden gnomes and brush turkeys for garden supremacy; the impact Brexit may have on the legacy of the Beatles; the rise of plastic fantastic, and its subsequent descent into toxicity; coffee, coffee, coffee – and why we can’t live without it; water, water, water – and why we can’t source enough; beer, beer, beer – our saviour in times of water restrictions.

That’s quite a range. I wonder now if I could retrospectively transpose a common theme onto my otherwise random writings, to give them more credibility. I think I can. They are all about change, and its inevitability. How we handle it. How we seek to resist rather than embrace it. How we look to others to make it happen, because we struggle with doing it ourselves. Rather than undertake a four-year course of study in Change Management, I look to experts to explain the challenge, clarify the key issues and simplify the required responses. We have the tweets of Donald Trump – a man who has mastered the universe and can inform the world of his solutions in 140 characters. Then there’s Greta Thunberg – a young girl who also ignores polite discussion, delivering her disturbing, but possibly necessary rants towards world leaders and adult climate vandals. And finally, my favourite philosophers - the poets who can distill the global challenges into 3½ minutes of memorable song. David Bowie couldn’t quite get out the words in 1971, but in “Changes” he told adults it was time to see the world they had created through the eyes of their children – and it wasn’t pretty. Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes Turn and face the strange Ch-ch-changes Don't tell them to grow up and out of it Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes Turn and face the strange Ch-ch-changes Where's your shame? You've left us up to our necks in it Time may change me But you can't trace time

But the best advice for a blinkered and aging society comes from the greatest philosopher poet of all – Bob Dylan – in his classic 1964 protest song “The Times They Are A Changin’.” Come gather 'round people, wherever you roam And admit that the waters around you have grown And accept it that soon you'll be drenched to the bone. If your time to you is worth savin' Then you better start swimming or you'll sink like a stone For the times they are a-changin'. Come Senators, Congressmen, please heed the call Don't stand in the doorway, don't block up the hall For he that gets hurt will be he who has stalled There's a battle outside and it is ragin'. It'll soon shake your windows, and rattle your walls For the times they are a-changin'. Come mothers and fathers, throughout the land And don't criticize what you can't understand Your sons and your daughters are beyond your command Your old road is rapidly agin'. Get outta’ the new one if you can't lend your hand For the times they are a-changin'. You can’t top that, and I won’t try. Here’s to 2020 - the changes it will bring, the responses we will muster, and the traditions we will fight to hold on to. Cheers, and as always, stay chilled…. Tony, Byron Bazaar

This week's mantra LET IT BE DELIGHTFUL.

Advice for maximum merriment: Come together. Hold each other close. Let Presence be your anthem. Let go of expectation. Lean into gratitude. Focus less on what you can consume and more on what you can contribute. Think less about things and more about togetherness. Spend less money. Make more memories. Give and receive with equal joy. Share old traditions. Create new ones. Sing, dance, laugh, play, lighten up. Keep it simple. Go slow. And above all, let it be delightful. Sending you my love for the holidays...I’ll see you in 2020!

ON FRIDAY LADY VENUS SLIPS INTO QUIRKY

but friendly Aquarius where she resides until mid-January. She instantly forms a healing sextile to Chiron (exact 21/12); you may feel inspired to show that you care. It might breathe fresh air into a relationship that has turned stale. The Sun joins the Capricornian crew of Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto on Sunday (22/12), which marks the Summer solstice. Monday might be a difficult day, in particular if you demand cooperation from a partner. Venus is rebellious and provocative (Venus square Uranus), while Mars is compelled to get things done but might feel triggered into manipulative or overly forceful behaviour (Mars sextile Pluto). A Sun/Chiron square might tug on your heart-strings on Christmas Day. Maybe you find a way to support someone who is doing it tough. Boxing Day graces us with the third solar eclipse of this year. It might have a huge impact and bring extraordinary insights because of its close proximity to Jupiter. It may have great personal significance for you if you have planets between 3 and 5 degrees in Cancer, Capricorn, Aries or Libra. Note that the time between this solar eclipse and the lunar eclipse in two weeks is a time of endings and new beginnings! With four planets in downto-earth Capricorn the letting go process that is necessary may not be an easy one. On Saturday 28/12 the Sun unites with Jupiter and energetically calls in the new year. On Sunday Mercury, the planet for connection and travel, enters Capricorn and instantly forms a square to Chiron. Here is an opportunity to hear, see and feel what goes on beyond the spoken words in any conversation; tuning in can facilitate great healing! New Year’s Eve is under the influence of a Mercury/Uranus trine; time for a unique, innovative and maybe somewhat extravagant celebration, but because it happens in earth signs, there are no serious consequences, maybe even remarkable restraint and sobriety! A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs.

How to get into the Christmas spirit if hassles and irritations pop up constantly? With the 5 of Wands drawn you may find it difficult to relax and have a good time. You might need to work out, be part of some competitive sport or find any other way to let off steam periodically.

With the Prince of Wands by your side you can manifest your best during this Holiday Season. You are charming, confident and a marvellous entertainer. You freely express your feelings and opinions, and because you do it in such a charismatic way, you always get away with it.

The Fool Tarot card promises carefree days of spontaneous fun and adventure. You may throw your caution to the wind and embark on a journey into the unknown. Once you are on your way you may wonder why you have been hesitating for so long… Go for what makes your heart sing.

With the 3 of Wands drawn you are keen to make this Festive Season into a holistic experience. Body, mind and spirit must be nurtured in equal ways to make you feel happy and well. You may be able to provide inspiration and wholesome treats for your loved ones.

i GEMINI

The Sun Tarot card magnetically draws people towards you and your social life is vibrant and stimulating. Wherever you turn up you bring a fresh breeze, a feeling of light-heartedness, joy and optimism. As you shine your light brightly you inspire others.

The Hanged Man Tarot card symbolises the feeling of being stuck in old, most likely over-pleasing and super-nice patterns that deplete your energy. If you realise that you get lost in others’ wants and needs, suspend all action and pause to reflect on how to release yourself from these burdens.

j CANCER

b SCORPIO

The 4 of Disks’ motto is: My home is my castle, if you want to be with me, come and visit! You also have a great capacity to create a cosy and safe comfort-zone for all your loved ones, but even in your home you easily take on too much! If that’s the case ask for help.

a LIBRA

The 8 of Cups indicates an empty and weary heart. Maybe you feel emotionally drained because things ‘should’ be different! Your expectations or sentimental attachments might make it difficult to express your truth. Time alone with your favourite pet-project might be good medicine.

c SAGITTARIUS

The 6 of Swords stands for original, inventive and different ways to enjoy the Holiday Season. You might gather a few like-minded souls around you and focus on a humanitarian project, or you may want to join others to experience something that expands your mind and your horizons.

d CAPRICORN

The 10 of Cups simply suggests gathering family and friends for a good oldfashioned, traditional and substantial celebration. The more the merrier! As you fill one another’s cups (hearts) the energies of well-being and delight overflow and might ripple out far and wide.

e AQUARIUS

The 2 of Cups symbolises love in action. This is the perfect time to heal a relationship rift that has been bothering you for a while. Reach out, create connection and enjoy the caring and sharing. As you celebrate and offer unconditional love, your world and everyone else’s brightens.

f PISCES

With the 2 of Swords drawn you may be aware of some inner turmoil that keeps you agitated and away from the feeling of deep inner peace that you long for so passionately. Avoiding unpleasant feelings or facts does not help, but maybe counting your blessings does…

This week's recommendation

ALBUM TITLE: A Blemish in the Great Light ARTIST: Half Moon Run RELEASED: November 2019 GENRE: Alternative folk pop BIO: Half Moon Run started as a group of poor uni

students recording for a friend's sound engineering assignment. Next minute they were dropping out of school and jumping, with minimal experience, into a full-time band. Indica Records (Kim Churchill, John Butler Trio, The Cat Empire etc.) picked them up and each member became a classically trained multiinstrumentalist. It all escalated from there! WHAT TO EXPECT: An album that displays everything the band's about; honesty, beauty, the quest for selfdiscovery and the realities of life. WHAT WE LIKE: The sound of physical instruments replace the common electronic sounds of modern pop. Flesh and Blood is driven by an old, slightly country sounding piano. It makes for a hearty, more human and wholesome sound. You'll also notice a heavy use of vocal harmonies and strings. These fold and overlap, thickly layering the songs and building up a tension and emotionality. They lead the music away from the sound of a solo musician to that of a shared experience, by every musician participating and by every listener. A great example is Then Again. As a whole, the album has a consistent personality that adventures through into its varying moods. Black Diamond is soft feel good, Yani's Song is bright and playful while the end of Razorblade darkens with a slow, painful distortion and tries its hand at metal. STANDOUT TRACKS: Then Again, Razorblade. PERFECT FOR: If you’re looking for a big sound album to embolden and strengthen you. Perfect for emotional night-time driving. LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: Husky, Boy and Bear, Mumford and Sons. Recommended by Delphi O'Heart.

O BOOKS FOR Y

This week's review

TITLE: Cloudstreet AUTHOR: Tim Winton NUMBER OF PAGES: 448 EST. READ TIME: 14 hours 20 minutes PRICE: $24.99 WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Cloudstreet follows the stories of

two dysfunctional families full of endearingly fallible characters. They end up sharing the same roof over the span of two decades, due to poverty and the "shifty shadow" of fate. Many tragedies befall the two families, yet Winton doesn’t wallow in the fallout, but rather celebrates the dogged and dry-humoured coping of those who are used to hardship. Set against the backdrop of Perth in the 1940s-1960s, the story examines disability and death, love and grief, with hints of hauntings and a serial killer. Cloudstreet may seem to have too many elements, yet Winton delicately weaves them together to culminate in a masterful ending that has the bitter-sweet scent of reality.

WHO IT'S FOR: Anyone who appreciates relationship psychology and artful character development. Also, if you aren't familiar with Australian writers, there is no better place to start than Tim Winton. WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Winton uses analogies in a

way that makes you catch your breath and pause to savour a vivid image or the delicate essence of a felt experience you'd never considered before.

NOTABLE QUOTES: “Life was something you didn't argue

with, because when it came down to it, whether you barracked for God or nothing at all, life was all there was. And death.” “It’s sadness coming on like the old days, the vast seamless hopeless weight of sadness looking for a place to rest.” This week's review written by Lauren Axelsen

a w n e r e a e K D om FROM AncienTHtE Wisd er Grain Moth

DEAR KEENWA, I went to Ballina fair last week, and discovered that it's Christmas time y'all. When did this happen? How can I give this Hallmark holiday a Byron spin? I'm just not that into it. - Gary Grinch

DEAR GARY GRINCH,

8. C, LESS THAN 2 SEC. 9. A, GRUMPY CAT. 10. A, LACHSCHLAGANFALL. 11. A, MACY'S. 12. B, ANGEL. 13. TRUE 14. C, PARIS.

15. 16. 17. 18. 19. 20. 21.

FALSE, GRAPES. B, 10 MILLION. C, CANADA. A, ITALY. C, MYRRH. B, WHITE CHRISTMAS. ALL OF THE ABOVE.

DEAR KEENWA,

Tricky Trivia Answers - Questions page 19

1. C, 50. 2. B, DEPOSIT BOX. 3. TRUE 4. C, GORILLA. 5. TRUE. 6. B, 20%. 7. B, CHAINED TO A KENNEL.

Now here in the Shire we like to keep this time of year as environmentally conscious, spiritually centred and as socially savvy as possible. What that means in these parts is that, Christmas is actually known as Solstice (this unfortunately involves way too much craft, but lots of sunshine and partying). Obligatory family get-togethers become the perfect place to practice mindfulness, and gifts are ecologically and politically correct. Such as those clear lens, nerd alert, dorky eye glasses. Like do your loved ones actually have problems with their eye sight? No. Will they wear these four-eyed bad boys when they're utilising their fermentation kit and checking the summer waves? Heck, yes.

New year. Resolutions. I’m ashamed to admit it, but despite living here for decades, I’m not a Magical Manifester. I’ve tried working with the moon cycle, crystals, affirmations, and regular chanting, but my wishes never come true. Ever. What am i doing wrong? I wanna start 2020 with a bang. - Oddly Ordinary

DEAR ODDLY ORDINARY, Manifesting. Uuuugh how i shudder in the face of this word. It feels like its linked to the notion of deserving - as in, some of us deserve a generous kombucha budget, and some of us homelessness. Or that other patronising friend of - i chose all of this. Anyhow, i digress...so most magic is born from desire. One of the sick parts of being human, no matter what our upbringing, is that evil part in our psyche that secretly loves sabotaging equally as much as it wants to win. If you can sing in the new year shining a light on that little devil on your shoulder, you might just make space for your true desires, and give them a stage to be realised.

Philip Goodwin OWNER BODYMINDLIFE

TELL US WHERE YOU ARE FROM, AND WHAT BRINGS YOU TO BYRON BAY? I’m from Sydney originally but spent two years growing up in Nigeria as a child. I’ve been surfing up and down the coast for a large portion of my life and have always gravitated towards Byron. It’s been a spiritual home to me for years. The opportunity to combine my passion for yoga with a place I feel deeply connected to just made sense. WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? I started life as a singer and toured Europe in my very early years, then became an investment banker and endured all the stresses that came with it. Twenty years ago I found an undeniable passion for yoga which changed my life. In my view, it's one of the most efficient practices and the most effective way to find harmony in both body and mind. BYRON CERTAINLY SEEMS TO HAVE BECOME A HOME FOR SELFHELP, NURTURING AND HEALING - WHAT WILL YOUR NEW CENTRE BE OFFERING? I personally have seen how yoga has the power to change the lives of others - this was the genesis of BodyMindLife. The new centre in the heart of Byron will offer yoga, reformer Pilates and teacher training together with some amazing wellness treatments such as hot and cold plunge pools, an infrared sauna and a number of different therapies like massage and acupuncture. COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE – "I LOVE... the natural environment, fresh local produce and the chance to meet so many amazing people in a short period of time. After coming from a big city, the sense of community really makes a difference." IF YOU WENT TO A FANCY-DRESS PARTY, WHO WOULD YOU GO AS, AND WHY? I’d go as superman because that's how I feel after a class at BodyMindLife. BYRON IS RENOWNED FOR ITS BRUSH TURKEYS - HAVE YOU HAD ANY CLOSE ENCOUNTERS? I’m sure there’s plenty of turkeys around, but fortunately, I don't attract turkeys!
