baby? Does inaction on climate change make you mad? Then grab your bub and head to Byron Bay Library at 10am on Friday, where Byron mums will be staging a peaceful ‘nurse-in’ to time with the next global school strike.

On Saturday, Marvell Hall will be hosting a Love Dining pop-up, with organic vegan chef James Wright preparing a delicious all-you-can-eat vegan feast. Starting with canapes from 6pm, the feed will set you back $49 for adults and $19 for kids. The Love Dining experience uses eco-friendly plates and cutlery, but if you BYO your own you’ll receive a voucher for 10% off the next Love Dining experience. It’s BYO booze, too. Sunday is shaping up to be a busy one, starting with the Byron Markets in its scenic temporary location on the Main Beach foreshore. From 4pm, the Brunswick Hotel will be hosting a ‘surprise Sunday session’. They’re saying it’s a gig you won’t want to miss, and we’re intrigued. From 5pm, it’s over to Williams Reserve in Lennox for Carols in the Park. Kicking off with Santa arriving by fire truck, it’s set to be a fun family event with food stalls, face painting for kids, and live entertainment. Stick around for the Macadamia Castle fireworks finale at 8:45pm, and remember to leave your dog, glass and alcohol at home. Finally, if you’re looking for a spot to celebrate Christmas Eve this year, Barrio has you sorted with its Christmas Eve Fiesta. For $85 you’ll get a welcome cocktail on arrival, followed by all the Argentine-inspired festive tucker you can eat. For bookings, email gather@barriobyronbay.com.au.

I WAS BROWSING THROUGH ONE OF THE MULTIPLE FREE

news sources I’ve accidently subscribed to, when I came across this statement - “Making language visible is one of the most extraordinary achievements of human beings. Reading and writing is fundamental to our ability to thrive in the modern world.” When you stop and think about it, our ability to read, write and communicate is critical to our development – yes, fundamental even. These skills are a blend of both nature and nurture – some capabilities we are born with, some skills we learn (or not!). Assuming our genetics haven’t changed much over the last 100 years, the fact that publishers and retailers report record book sales should translate into better reading skills. Add in e-books and audio books and we must all be geniuses! Unfortunately, we’re not. In Australia our literacy standards are dropping – quite remarkably. What’s going on?

JAZZED ON BYRON - Opposite Aldi BLUSH & BLOO - Opposite Woolies

Pop in to see what we have for you gals and guys. BEST Prices in Town You'll be ...JaZzeD...

I have two explanations. Firstly, buying books is different to reading books. One takes money, one takes time – and we seem to have more money than time. Amazon, Book Depository, Booktopia – they all make the purchase so easy, our book collections are growing faster than ever. But many of those books are never read. I know my bookshelves may be overflowing, but most of the content remains a mystery. Secondly, all books are not created equally. Australia’s top five selling books since 2002 are - 50 Shades of Grey, The Barefoot Investor, Harry Potter, The CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet, and Jamie’s 15-Minute Meals. There may be some classics in there, but to challenge our intellect as well as titillate our senses, this list doesn’t compare all that favourably to the world’s best-selling novels of all time. Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery - and the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rawling also makes this list. (By the way, watching the film doesn’t count towards reading the book, although they are all great movies!) I have said it before – there are too many good books in the world to waste our time reading bad ones. What are you reading – apart from this? I promise to sift through my bookshelves and pull out some of those classics I have never read, before I buy any more. At the beach, by the pool, or in the airconditioned lounge – I will be reading, improving my smarts, and all whilst staying chilled. Tony, Byron Bazaar

This week's mantra TRUST IN REST.

Rest is wildly underrated. Emptiness is totally undervalued. Pauses are sacred spaces. Stopping sometimes is truly the secret sauce to a richer life. Because when we pause and sink in, we reconnect with the depths of ourselves. And it is from those depths that inspiration, creativity, wisdom, clarity and potency spring forth. Although resting should be second nature for us, we’ve learned to override the signals. In doing so habitually, we’ve lost our trust in rest. Many of us actually fear rest and have to be forced into it. We miss the signs that it’s time to lay down the doing and fumble our way into rest by way of illness and burnout. Why do we fear rest? Because achievement is the addiction du jour in our culture. We avoid anxious feelings by keeping our pipelines full and tasks piled high. If we stay busy we don’t have to sit with discomfort. Every little achievement rewards us with a cheap hit of worthiness. Beneath all that bustling and busyness and box-ticking we are afraid we are not enough just as we are. So it’s no wonder that stopping and resting can be hard. It’s no wonder we don’t transition into rest with much grace. The good news is that instead of letting rest “happen” to us out of necessity, we can learn to welcome it. Creating intentional pauses in our lives (both short and long) creates opportunity for rest, reflection and renewal. The more comfortable we are with cycling through periods of rest, the less we resist rest. And the less we resist rest, the more we benefit from it. And those benefits build our trust in rest - and in ourselves. How can you invite periods of rest and stillness into your day, week, month, year? How can you stop resisting this part of the energetic cycle and instead start honouring it? Tune in next week when I’ll share one of my favourite ways to rest.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

SINCE

MID-OCTOBER

MERCURY,

THE

planet who represents the mind, communication and travel, and Neptune, who symbolises our creative/ spiritual path, have had two strong connections by water-trine. This was possible because of their retrograde and forward motions. On Thursday they have their third and last exact trine for now. If you have been working on a creative project or rely primarily on your intuition, this day may give you great inspiration and a new perspective. Both planets are direct now; it is a visionary day and confusion gives way to clarity. A Venus/Uranus earth trine (exact on Friday) adds another original and highly artistic dimension to any free-spirited endeavour. This influence lasts during the weekend. A Mercury/Saturn sextile (exact on Saturday) assists with a more business-like approach and helps to set concrete goals. This week’s biggest news is giant Jupiter’s move into ambitious Capricorn, where he resides for the next year. From Tuesday onwards we have Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto long-term, and Venus, just for another two weeks, in down-to-earth Capricorn. What a perfect time to get organised, develop a plan of action and strategies for success. A fleeting Mercury/Pluto sextile adds investigation, depth and insight to the equation on Tuesday and Wednesday, while Venus and Mars are in agreeable sextile and in a similar mood. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

The Princess of Wands symbolises a liberated, free spirit. With her by your side you feel very enthusiastic and ready for your next adventure. You are interested in spontaneous expression and pioneering new ways of being. The very Capricornian astro-flavour helps you to ground your ideas in practicality.

The 6 of Swords suggests that objective, logical and rational thinking is needed to overcome momentary difficulties. Consider the whole, adopt birds-eye vision! This way you can come up with some great solutions. Teamwork is favoured over trying to go it alone, and clear communication and networking bring success.

The Queen of Cups is a highly sensitive, intuitive and rather Venusian lady who loves to immerse herself with all her senses into the experience of nature. She nudges you to nurture yourself and allow time off from business and social commitment. By yourself you can contemplate and truly appreciate the meaning of life.

What would change in your life if you decided to treat yourself like a ‘star’? The Star Tarot card asks you to relax into knowing your worth, trusting yourself and nurturing your confidence, in order to actualise your creative potential. Leave any dismissive self-judgement behind and allow things to unfold…

i GEMINI

a LIBRA

The Knight of Swords is on a mission. He is focussed and determined, but at times he might miss a few details because he is in such a hurry. Nevertheless he does get results! This is a breathless week and even if you slow down just a little, you get straight to the point where you want to be.

j CANCER

This week the Empress Tarot card emphasises your caring and nurturing qualities. She has the capacity to heal and comfort others, but she knows that it all starts with looking after the self. Realising and fulfilling your own needs gives you the strength to look after others.

The Queen of Swords is honest, astute and forthright in all situations. With her by your side you may feel uncomfortable when you are overly pleasing and sweet. She assists you to be upfront and tell the truth as you know it. As difficult as this sometimes is for you, it actually helps others to recognise where you stand.

b SCORPIO

The 10 of Disks promises inner and outer riches, with business success, wealth and acknowledgement coming your way. Some people may think you are just lucky, but the truth is that you have a formula for success! It includes determination, hard work and an inner knowing that you deserve to reap the fruits of your labour.

c SAGITTARIUS

The 8 of Disks represents a concentrated effort to create order out of chaos. You might have to slow down a bit, take care of details and then apply yourself diligently to the enormous tasks ahead. Don’t rush or you miss noticing the fine points, and don’t take more on than you can handle right now.

d CAPRICORN

The Knight of Wands is the bringer of change; he is ready to take a leap of faith in order to catapult himself into a new reality. He may assist you to work through any limitations or latent, old inhibitions that have been holding you back from actualising your potential and getting what you really want. Take a risk!

e AQUARIUS

The Magician Tarot card highlights your mental/ spiritual creativity. This week your great communication skills make you irresistible, and if you focus on the task right in front of you, doors and minds will open in your favour. You are working on creating new realities out of mere possibilities and you may produce truly magical results.

f PISCES

With the World Tarot card drawn the world is your oyster. Naturally you are a visionary and the current astro-flavour supports your quest for meaning and fulfilment. Projects that have been stagnating for a while gain new momentum and might start bearing fruit. This in turn renews your faith and ignites your passion to fulfil your mission.

DEAR KEENWA, A chick I was in love with recently broke up with me out of the blue, around the start of November when the warm weather began. We got together when the cold snap started in Autumn. Tell me, have I been cuffed? - Cuff Up

DEAR CUFF UP, The biggest giveaway is urgency. Did they come in hot and fast, pushing for you to double date their mates, inviting you to family events, and wanting to get lots of Christmas in July dates in the diary? Psychology Today explains this phenomenon as people tending to feel lonelier during winter months. You see, when the days get shorter and colder, we head straight home from the places we absolutely have to go to, like work, school, or Santos. This can make socialising a little more difficult, and feelings of isolation can start to set in. Enter: the ol' cup trick.

DEAR KEENWA, I'm so into this guy I just met. The problem is, I've consulted my pendulum, astrology forecast, the resident psychic, and my tarot cards, daily, and they all say no. That it will end in disaster. I can't get him out of my mind though, what should I do? Any ideas on how I can trick fate? - Best of Three

DEAR BEST OF THREE, Alain de Botton says we are wired to marry the wrong person. I think I am wired that marriage to anyone is wrong, but anyhoo, back to you. Pheromones, brain chemistry, childhood attachment, our parents' love story, incomplete inner union, shadow projection, self-sabotage, and wounded sadism. Head, heart, genitals. Do 'we' really ever choose someone? Something is making you fall for this guy and only cupid knows which part. I'm not sure I like it. I'm out.

This week's recommendation

ALBUM TITLE: Tell Me Why ARTIST: Archie Roach RELEASED: November 2019 GENRE: Roots, Jazz, Rock, Gospel BIO: After being taken from his parents, suffering in

orphanages and care, music thankfully found Archie in a kind foster family who exposed him to Scottish music, guitar and keyboard. He has numerous A.R.I.A.s, is a Member of the Order of Australia and is an activist for indigenous rights. At 63, the album complements his book of memoirs of the same title.

WHAT TO EXPECT: First-hand lyrical inspiration from

his life experiences. Ballads of storytelling thread together from jazz, gospel, roots, rock, and folk.

WHAT WE LIKE: There is a lot to learn from Archie’s

stories penned amongst pages of piano, drums, strings, and duets. Whether it be first-hand accounts of Archie’s life, the stolen generations or appreciating home, the land, or how our soul and spirit have become less prominent, there is wisdom to share. Every track is beautifully composed and heartfelt performed, it is honest, and at times confronting to hear of the suffering and wrongs dealt to indigenous people. Hope and solace is found on Place of Fire & Let Love Rule and beauty to be discovered on an A Child Is Born Here. If music saved Archie then perhaps his music can help you.

STANDOUT TRACKS: Down City Streets, Tell Me Why, Rally Round the Drum.

PERFECT FOR: Reflecting on stories of another’s world. Processing white privilege, oppression and indigenous Australians. Finding inspiration in music for better beginnings.

LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, Paul Kelly, Tracy Chapman, Nina Simone. Recommended by Dan McGill.

BOOKS FOR Y

This week's review

TITLE: Devotion AUTHOR: Dani Shapiro NUMBER OF PAGES: 272 EST. READ TIME: 4 hours 15 minutes PRICE: $19.90 WHAT'S IT ABOUT? Swept up in the everyday noise of

life Dani Shapiro, wife and mother, found herself questioning her life in ways she never had before. Growing up in a deeply religious household she strayed from Orthodox Judaism after her parents’ death. But now, raising a son of her own, she begins to question her place in the world in Devotion. In a discovery of her faith and where she stands she rediscovers the parts of herself that she believed were long lost.

WHO IT'S FOR: I think anyone grappling with their own

beliefs and faith would appreciate the sentiment in the memoir.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: As a person who was not

brought up with religion I found this a fascinating exploration into how faith creeps into the corners of a persons’ identity and continues to play an important part in their life, even if they don’t necessarily practice religion on a regular basis.

NOTABLE QUOTE: "We learn--if we are lucky we learn-as we go, we are in the center of the stream. Much has already happened, and has formed the shape of our lives as surely as water shapes rock. Much lies ahead of us. We can’t see what’s coming. We can’t know it. All we have is our hope that all will be well, and our knowledge that it won’t always be so. We live in the space between this hope and this knowledge."

Lenny Ransome CHEF - @SOCIETABISTRO

TELL US WHERE YOU’RE FROM, AND HOW YOU FOUND YOURSELF IN MULLUMBIMBY? I was actually born in Mullum and grew up in Main Arm and the hills around here. I spent ten years cheffing in Melbourne and Brisbane and returned home three years ago. It’s such a great place to live and to bring up kids. I’ve been running the Societa Bistro at the Mullum Ex-services club since July, and it’s really going well. COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE – "I LOVE... surfing, but I struggle to find the time. New Brighton is my favourite place to go when I do get out." WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE DISHES TO EAT, AND TO COOK? Spaghetti Marinara. I learnt how to cook it working under Ian Curly at The European in Melbourne. I have tweaked it over the years, and it’s a real pleasure to cook it now and watch the patrons devour it! It can be a pretty simple dish, but also it’s easy to get wrong. When I’m letting someone else do the cooking, you know, I love a good pizza – a takeaway from Elanor’s Buon Appetito in Mullum is my go to. IF YOU WENT TO A FANCY-DRESS PARTY, WHO WOULD YOU GO AS, AND WHY? Scuba Steve from the movie “Big Daddy”. I actually went as him once, but boy, did it get hot – not the best summer party outfit!

LOOKING FOR STAFF? WE CAN HELP!

BYRON IS RENOWNED FOR ITS WILD TURKEYS - HAVE YOU EVER TURNED A BRUSH TURKEY INTO A GOURMET MEAL? Plenty of turkeys have been cooked in my ovens, but no brush turkeys. I hear they’re pretty tough, so a slow cook, braised method might be the best way to prepare it. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT BYRON AND THE SURROUNDING AREA, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Not much – parking in town has always been a challenge. I think I got a lot of tickets in my younger days – hope I paid them all!

BOOKING DEADLINE - MIDNIGHT MONDAY - PUBLISHED THURSDAY

To book call 0487 003 765 or email hello@byronbazaar.com

WHAT MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO IN THE KITCHEN AND AT HOME? I’m a bit of an 80’s man – Talking Heads, INXS, Fleetwood Mac, Van Morrison are all on my play list.
