WITH QUEENSLAND AND NSW

Schoolies weeks crossing over this weekend, perhaps the best part of town to be around this week is…home. If you’re feeling brave, there are a few good reasons to venture out, starting with Habitat Byron Bay’s final Good Chat of 2019. Drop by the Habitat Workspace from 5pm Thursday to hear Elizabeth Abegg, cofounder of Spell & The Gypsy Collective, talk about making sustainability fashionable. Snacks will be provided, with Stone & Wood and Jilly Wines on hydration duties.

6:30pm. It’ll set you back a tenner to join the fun, with half going to the Indigenous Literary Foundation. And if you’ve been wondering what natural wine is all about, The Sun Bistro’s Vine to Wine tasting event on Saturday is for you. The $35 ticket price (via thesunbistro.com) gets you five natural wine tastings and a return ride on the Byron Bay Solar Train, with local booze and food producers joining the celebration from 5pm.

2 BYRON BAZAAR

MUSIC IS DEFINED AS “THE ART OF COMBINING VOCAL OR

instrumental sounds to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.” That definition doesn’t seem to allow for BAD music – and we all know, it does exist. An out of tune piano, a tone-deaf vocalist, an untrained trumpeter, or worst of all, any trainee violinist! These are not combinations producing beauty of form. Maybe bad music is just called noise! But the history of good music has been on my mind this week. I’ve been reading Pete Townshend’s autobiography, “Who I Am”. Townshend was the driving force of The Who, one of THE bands of the 60’s and 70’s. Like many of the musical greats from that time (think Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Cocker, Creedence Clearwater, CSN&Y), a good set at Woodstock in 1969 was enough to turn pub legends into music gods. Known for his virtuoso guitar performances, Townshend tells how he was on fire and in the zone during a late-night performance at Woodstock. After a very, very long feedback rich guitar solo, one of the band members screamed at him to stop playing. As dawn broke, happy he had given all he could, Townshend crashed the guitar to the floor, tossed it into the audience and led The Who off stage – and his place in musical folklore was assured. Fifty years later, Nick Kyrgios tried the same technique with some tennis racquets at a range of tournaments, with not quite the same outcome. Notoriety perhaps, but immortality? Probably not! The power of music is undoubtable. At Mullum Music Festival on the weekend I didn’t spot any smashing guitars, but I did hear some great performances, and I witnessed a few rain dances. What music to my ears the Sunday afternoon raindrops brought – I hope the magic of the dance extends to all parts of this parched land for a little bit longer. As usual, there is no shortage of music in our pubs, clubs and breweries this weekend. I might spot one or two of you there. I’ll be the one trying to look cool, smashing out a few air guitar solos up the back, channeling Pete Townshend. Just ignore me, and stay chilled… Tony, Byron Bazaar

This week's mantra MAKE A DATE WITH DELIGHT.

We are so focused on outputs and production and perfection. We are driven by what needs to get done. By function. By outcomes. By what can be measured. But at the end of the day, at the end of the year, at the end of this life, what will you reflect on? Are memories and meaning made and measured in moments of productivity? Or rather, do they rise out of those rare pockets of pleasure in our lives? The moments when we just... let ourselves have the moment? The occasions where we slow down enough to notice the subtle ecstasy of the everyday.

VOLUNTEER BEACH SURVEY OFFICERS

Positive Change for Marine Life are seeking volunteer Beach Survey Officers to help coordinate fortnightly beach cleans and data collation. Visit PCFML.ORG.AU and click “TAKE ACTION” for more information.

The slow mornings in bed. The bowl of freshly cooked food eaten on the grass. Just-cut gardenias. The unhurried moment. Tea drunk hot. Dog-eared pages. Kitchen table conversations. Handwritten notes. Silk or sunshine or seawater on skin. A spoonful of honey. Laughter in the dark. I for one don’t want delight, beauty, pleasure and presence to be afterthoughts or side-effects in my life. I refuse to make order, productivity and outputs the measure of my life. Because, as John O’Donahue put it, “A life without delight is only half a life.” I want a fully-lived life. I want to be in conversation with joy. I want to make a regular date with delight. Will you join me? Make a date with delight. Invite it into your life. Do something totally delightful for 15 minutes a day for the next 7 days. Something purely pleasurable and absolutely unproductive. What joy will you find? What gratification awaits us if you give yourself permission to truly delight in your life?

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

ON THURSDAY RETROGRADE MERCURY

turns direct again, but don’t be fooled! He takes a while to gain momentum and only moves beyond his retrograde path into new territory on the 8th of December. On Saturday the Sun moves into fiery and outgoing Sagittarius, where Venus the love-goddess and giant Jupiter already reside. During the weekend these two planets approach their yearly union which is very early on Monday, just after midnight. This conjunction happens just one degree from a point in our solar system called the ‘Galactic Centre’. It is the rotational centre of our Milky Way and located at about 27 degrees of Sagittarius. This event may trigger a big wave of truth seeking, and freedom loving people will invest time and energy into projects that promise results. The issues concerned are: truth, ethics, philosophy and morals. During that same night a challenging opposition of Mars in Scorpio to Uranus in Taurus is exact. Here the issues are: security, possessiveness, money, sex and power. Mars might have some explosive agendas. If he reveals anything it is going to get uncomfortable! There may be fascinating twists, turns and undercurrents. Unexpected interruptions of plans, specifically travel plans, might have to be dealt with, but they may actually work out in your favour later. Venus’ ingress into Capricorn on Tuesday might feel like a relief; suddenly there is more solid ground under your feet! In the mountain-goat’s sign she means business and is practical, serious and realistic. On Wednesday the New Moon in Sagittarius would appreciate a carefree environment, but Venus is in challenging square to Chiron. Some old wounds concerning ambitions and identity might be triggered. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

l VIRGO

The 8 of Cups indicates emotional exhaustion, depletion or even burn-out. If you feel drained in that way it is difficult to see clearly and consider your options. You might have to step back from over-involvement and honour your own limits and boundaries first.

The 2 of Disks drives home the big truth that change is the only constant thing in our universe! Therefore the more flexible you are and the more you can go with the flow the better you will fare this week. You might even have some fun juggling life in a new way.

i GEMINI

The Justice Tarot card is all about integrating new details and finding a balanced approach to new circumstances. You are asked to look at all sides of an issue, as well as the bigger picture. Try to avoid excessive reactions, and work on simplifying your life.

j CANCER

When the Tower Tarot card appears, any efforts to try to stay secure and in control are in vain. All you can do when your plans, big or small, get disrupted, is to put up with the chaos and release as much resistance as possible. Letting go is the first step to healing and restoration.

With the Knight of Wands drawn you are ready for a leap of faith. You are confident and daring, maybe quite hot-tempered, but if you funnel all this energy into a worthwhile mission you definitely succeed. Go for what you want and make things happen!

With the Queen of Cups by your side you are able to navigate the deep currents of this week with great emotional intelligence and maturity. You stay in contact with your intuitive and tender feelings, allowing yourself to be guided by your heart, not your head. Deep communion with nature uplifts you.

a LIBRA

The 3 of Cups promises a great week ahead. In particular from Friday afternoon to mid-day Sunday can be an exuberant and very social time for you. Get together with people you love and share your nurturing, lighthearted spirit. Giving and receiving come easily and is equally fulfilling.

b SCORPIO

With the 10 Cups drawn your cup is full and overflowing. You have so much to give, so don’t hide at home. The more you share your deep feelings the more positive energy flows back to you. This might be an exquisite and unusually social week!

c SAGITTARIUS

The Venus/Jupiter union is happening in your sign and, especially if this is your birthday week, big things might happen! The 4 of Wands indicates that one whole cycle is about to end, and it is time to recognise and celebrate how far you have come, while you open up to new possibilities.

d CAPRICORN

The 9 of Swords represents an overactive mind that is plagued by doubt and worry which make it difficult to relax. Your inner tension may aggravate judgemental patterns. As soon as you are aware of this downward spiral, apply a generous dose of gratitude for the things that are working out right now.

e AQUARIUS

The 4 of Swords nudges you to take time off from your main mental preoccupations and focus on establishing more inner peace. Resolving an inner or outer conflict may not be achieved by analysis of facts but by diving deeper into your heart space…

f PISCES

The Prince of Swords’ mission is to find clarity. He asks the deep and at times uncomfortable questions. He urges you to analyse your inspirations, motivations and goals. If you are attached to habits that don’t support these, he helps you to eliminate them.

DEAR KEENWA, Death walker, death doula, and grief walking is so hot right now. Wtf is that? Is it like fire walking but with a corpse beneath you? Will it help me get closer to enlightenment? I saw that death cafes are all the rage in the USA, please explain. - In The Dark

DEAR IN THE DARK, I broke my virginity at a funeral. With a living person. Possibly because in Judy Blume's 1980's novel Forever, Katherine kisses Theo, the hot camp counsellor who is NOT her boyfriend, after her grandpa dies, and he comforts her by telling her it's a normal reaction to someone dying. I think what Judy and I may have in common, is that we believe death, should we choose to run towards it, can gift us with life. Grief, just like sex can be a gateway for the current of life-force to flow, and when we come back into relationship with it, may just heal this cultural wound of separation we gots going on.

DEAR KEENWA, I have a chronic dating pattern that I need help busting out of, it goes dry spell. I mean nada. Then four birds to choose from at once. I don't know if i'm more petrified of making the wrong choice, or another long period of nothingness. Can't the universe spread them out? How to choose? - Venus in Gemini

DEAR VENUS IN GEMINI, Why you looking for the one? That's a lot of pressure for someone to fill. You of all peeps should understand duality, bro. If you are looking for one stable shade, then you should date dudes. There are four women (or at least two) inside each of us. So just choose one damn woman, and commit to her. Treat her like a Queen. Be curious about all the different parts of her, and she might just stick around. You won't be bored.

1. In Peter Pan, Captain Hook had a hook on which one of his hands? A. Left B. Right C. It was a sword 2. What town is the setting for the Disney Movie “The Love Bug?” A. San Diego B. San Francisco C. Santa Monica

This week's recommendation

ALBUM TITLE: Northern Rivers ARTIST: Jack Botts RELEASED: November 2019 GENRE: Folk BIO: Jack's got the old 'travelling minstrel' down to a T.

He's been living in his van, touring around Australia for the last year. Although it's a life on the road, Byron Bay remains his base where he can surf by day and serenade Jonson street by night. Jack never takes busking in the Bay as a predictable gig. There's always some kind of impromptu collaboration with other artists, upholding the true spirit of the Byron Bay busking culture. Now, with songs that have been brewing on the backburner like a good, strong coffee, he's just released his EP Northern Rivers.

WHAT TO EXPECT: 5 songs, as infectiously happy as their

creator, bound to paint your face with a smile for the day. They're sweet and catchy with that classic Byron Bay folk sound.

WHAT WE LIKE: The whole EP has a simple lightness

about it. It captures happy little polaroids of life in the Northern Rivers; a simple life of love, sunlight, coffee and home in a van. By highlighting small observations, like how someone's hair curls or their perfume 'still smells the same', the lyrics remind us to find the small joys of life and hold on to them. Sound wise, the EP has a smooth flow. Its more upbeat songs are Let Go with its driving tambourine and Gypsy with an easy, sing along vibe that's bound to get stuck in your head. Sleep Easy, Northern Rivers and Polaroid bring in a quieter, lovely, intimate feeling to the EP.

STANDOUT TRACKS: Gypsy, Northern Rivers, Polaroid. PERFECT FOR: Waking up slowly to a sunny morning or 'no rush' road trips.

LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: Ziggy Alberts, Jordy Maxwell, Riley Pearce. Recommended by Delphi O'Heart.

BOOKS FOR Y

This week's review

TITLE: Signs AUTHOR: Laura Lynne Jackson NUMBER OF PAGES: 320 EST. READ TIME: 5 hours 25 minutes PRICE: $25.90 WHAT'S IT ABOUT? Laura Lynne Jackson is a psychic

medium. She has a gift for communicating with those who have passed and has a theory that we all have this gift, but only if we harness it. In her years of experience as a medium she has learnt that we are given signs and messages from those we love on a regular basis and if we look closely we will be able to tune in to what they are saying.

WHO IT'S FOR: Those who’d like to forge a connection

and new language with those who may have passed. I’d recommend it to anyone who is wading through grief and harboring unresolved feelings.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: The stories in this book

are beautiful. Laura Lynne Jackson is great at demonstrating how we, as regular folk, can ask for signs from those we love and how we can look at the universe on a different spectrum to the one we are traditionally taught. I loved Signs as it has truly shifted the way I perceive my life and the lives of others.

NOTABLE QUOTE: "Sometimes, the sign is the whisper in our heart, the deep and undeniable pull, the inherent knowing that the answer is already there.... If we are open to this, it will truly enrich our lives. Because life is so much more than we can see in this dimension."

LOOKING FOR STAFF? WE CAN HELP!

Luke Faccini BRAND STORYTELLER - THESPONGE.COM.AU

YOU ARE A BRAND STORYTELLER – IS THAT LIKE AN ADVERTISING AGENCY? A bit more than that – we’re committed to helping business owners drive their business to be a force for good. I have met a lot of founders and I have to say, they can have great products or services, but many of them suck at brand storytelling! I’ll rephrase that more constructively - their brand stories often need structure and an impact overhaul. YOUR BUSINESS IS GLOBAL, BUT TELL US WHERE YOU’RE FROM AND HOW YOU ENDED UP IN BYRON. I was born and raised in Sydney, but I moved to the Byron Shire last year. My branding agency, The Sponge, has just turned 18 and come of age - so it allows me to split my time between Brisbane and Byron – and to service clients from Estonia to Tasmania. YOU COMBINE READING AND WORK OUTS – HOW? It’s true – I don’t mind the gym, and I’m a bookworm nerd. I found that audio books allowed me to do both. I’m currently working out at 2.5 times audio speed, so I’m feeling fit and extremely well read. HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO READ YOUR OWN BOOK – “IMPACT BRAND STORYTELLING”? I knew the ending, so I was able to listen to it at 3x normal speed. The voice pitch got a bit high, but I did lose a few pounds reading it. COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE – "I LOVE... the great coffee options available now in Byron – I love my coffee!." IF YOU WENT TO A FANCY-DRESS PARTY, WHO WOULD YOU GO AS, AND WHY? The Grim Reaper – I would love to wield a scythe. Not sure why, but the picture just came to mind – maybe it’s a hangover from the Halloween hangover?!

BOOKING DEADLINE - MIDNIGHT MONDAY - PUBLISHED THURSDAY

To book call 0487 003 765 or email hello@byronbazaar.com

BYRON IS RENOWNED FOR ITS WILD TURKEYS - HAVE YOU EVER HAD A RUN IN WITH A BRUSH TURKEY? No, not yet – and I have heard that they’re not very tasty, so I won’t be putting one on my Christmas luncheon menu.
