Film Festival might be over, but there are some great films to catch at Pighouse Flicks this week thanks to Films for Change Byron Bay. Up tonight at 6pm is Green Light, which follows the journey of two Aussie men working to provide black market medicinal cannabis to people with nowhere else to turn. Tickets are $25 via Eventbrite, and include chocolate tasting and live music by Sam Buckingham. Next Wednesday, The Price of Free follows the thrilling story of Nobel Peace Laurete Kailash Satyarthi’s journey to liberate every child from slavery. Tickets are the same price, and include more choccies and live tunes by Angie Hudson.

“WHO WOULD WIN A BATTLE BETWEEN A BRUSH TURKEY
and a garden gnome?” That’s a question we’ve been asking our Q&A interviewees, and the answers are divided. Last week, in preparation for the tricks and treats of Halloween, I came up with a variation – “Who wins in a show down between a garden gnome and a leprechaun?” Leprechauns are agile tricksters, whilst gnomes are solid guardians – it could be a good match up. I planned to ask the trick or treaters when they came knocking, with a bag of sweets as a reward. But no-one turned up. Perhaps it’s just too dark and uninviting in our street, with its minimalist street lighting. Or maybe not replacing the bulb from my porch light didn’t help. Either way, the question remained unanswered, and I’ve been dining out on sour snakes and party mix lollies for a week. Whooo hooooo!!!! Thinking about it now, garden gnomes and leprechauns are probably closely related. They have similar facial features, they wear similar clothes and they both hang out at the bottom of the garden. Leprechauns are the family favourites, granting wishes and always promising to show us the way to the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. They make good salesmen and politicians. Gnomes on the other hand are simple folk, friendlier, but less active. They don’t make promises, so we don’t make demands. They are the guardians and bureaucrats of the system. Together they form a formidable team, but who wins in a stoush? The question should have been who loses. When the bell rings and we find no pot of gold, just a long list of tricks and a bill for the show, the leprechaun is nowhere to be seen. In his place we find a shabby garden gnome, pointing out the change in circumstances and explaining why our wishes could never have been granted. Another election showdown comes and goes. The gnome survives, the leprechaun retires on a big pension and we end up with a black eye. That’s not the answer I was looking for. I’ll come up with a better question for Halloween next year – and I’ll light up the driveway with some pumpkin lanterns. At least if no-one turns up, instead of a sugar overdose I can freeze the leftovers – like a good night out, pumpkin soup is great chilled. Tony, Byron Bazaar

REJECTION IS A REDIRECTION. No. It’s a word many of us live in fear of. Why? We habitually misinterpret rejection as a bad thing. A source of shame. Proof of our unsatisfactory skills, services or self. But what if we stopped seeing rejection as evidence of our inadequacy? What if we stopped seeing rejection as a lost opportunity? What if rejection is just a redirection?

What if the brush off, the rebuff, the thumbs down, the cold shoulder are all just signposts pointing you back to the path that’s right for you? What if rejection is a redirection away from what won’t work and toward what will? What if rejection is not a lost opportunity but rather a favourable circumstance - a chance to conserve energy and resources for something more aligned, more fertile, more fruitful? Flipping the script on rejection makes hearing “no” more of a relief and less of a letdown. With practice, we become more neutral to the “no,” and when we’re more neutral to “no” we can be more resilient and more brave with our lives. Because, yes, (listen up!) rejection is a byproduct of bravery. Rejection only happens when you’re putting yourself out there. Rejection only happens when you’re putting your hand up or making an offer or throwing out an idea or asking a question. Rejection doesn’t happen to people who are hiding and doubting and shrinking. Those people are living in fear of rejection, which stunts their curiosity, their creativity, their courage and their conviction. And in my book, that is a downright dastardly way to waste one’s days here on earth. So stop taking rejection personally. Start seeing rejection as a redirection. And remember that if you’re being rejected it means you’re living a brave life. So. Good. On. You. Boo

ALBUM TITLE: White Jail ARTIST: Toxic Fox RELEASED: Oct 2019 GENRE: Pop Rock BIO: Toxic Fox are a five-piece band of 4 boys and
1 girl (yeah gurrrl). Calling Sunshine Coast home, they've just released their debut EP, White Jail. It was recorded nearby in Federal's Rocking Horse Studios with producer Elliot Heinrich (Pond) and engineer Nick Wilson (Sticky Fingers).
WHAT TO EXPECT: An EP safely put as a rocky, upbeat, summer all-rounder. This is a juicy collection of five songs, each one with it's own varying flavour.
WHAT WE LIKE: The EP kicks off with the song White
Jail. It's like the beginning of a fun night; you rock up to the designated 'spot', meet your friends, crack open a few cold ones, the energy is high, exciting and the night is a menu of possibilities. That's the feel of White Jail. The EP progresses to get a little poppy with Bond Street then moves into that classic Aussie, surf rock sound with Dear X. This song's got the build up of rock, a rapping East Coast accent and the summer chill of reggae. Then, if you've followed the band on Spotify, you'll recognise Oil Painted House. This was released as a single in August and, like most unexpectedly recognised music, you'll probably get a boost of excitement when you hear it. The EP concludes with Ten Years, with guitar and vocals stripped back like the lyrical content. Although it's raw, the song keeps its head above water, leading the audience to a lovely end of the night sway.

TITLE: The First Bad Man AUTHOR: Miranda July NUMBER OF PAGES: 304 EST. READ TIME: 4 hours 42 minutes PRICE: $19.90 WHAT'S IT ABOUT? Cheryl Glickman is a strange woman.
She is middle aged, socially awkward and harbouring a secret crush for a coworker. In her apartment she keeps two sets of cutlery and plates only, so that there is no chance of a sink full of dirty washing. A sink full of dirty washing is a big fear of hers. See what I mean? Weird. At her job she is considered ‘family’ by her bosses. So when she is asked by them to host their daughter, Clee, to stay with her she is bullied into doing so. Clee, a weirdo in her own right, royally outstays her welcome in Cheryl’s home. Their relationship, at times tumultuous, shifts into something much stranger as they begin to bring out the best and the worst in one another.
WHO IT'S FOR: Anyone who wants a laugh and is
prepared to be surprised. The First Bad Man is written in a similar vein to Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Miranda July creates a character who is simultaneously repulsive and undeniably loveable in Cheryl. It is a love letter to the weird and wacky thoughts we all have, the ones that are sometimes too perverse to speak out aloud. Cheryl speaks them for us, and we are able to see the repercussions in her doing so. NOTABLE QUOTE: "Sometimes I looked at her sleeping
face, the living flesh of it, and was overwhelmed by how precarious it was to love a living thing. She could die simply from lack of water. It hardly seemed safer than falling in love with a plant."
