IT'S TIME TO SHARE THE LOVE!

We at the Byron Bazaar love our community, and when we get the chance we love to promote it. In addition to our usual Community Notice Board on page 17, in this issue we share our magazine with a number of local, caring and supportive organisations. You will find ads for some wonderful community events, services and announcements, sponsored by the Byron Bay Public School, Feros Care, BreastScreen NSW and The Mullum Neighbourhood Centre. We hope you appreciate them, and get a chance to participate in all that this remarkable community has to offer. There’s a lot on!

You gotta’ love this town!

On Sunday, Kingswood returns to Byron to give us a taste of the Melbourne rockers’ third album following the release of the first single, Say You Remember. Supported by San Mei and The Jensens, the show kicks off at The Northern from 7:30pm (tickets $40, thenorthern.com.au). Finally, if you haven’t caught any flicks at the Byron Bay International Film Fest yet, there are still plenty of sessions available until it closes on Sunday (bbff.com.au).

We also begin a new initiative this week – an opportunity for local talent to advertise themselves, their product or their service free of charge in the Bazaar. “Watch this Space” on the next page, will, provide one startup, budding entrepreneur or future star with a place to tell the story of their dreams, passions and ambitions. Details on how to become involved are included, and we look forward to encouraging, and perhaps launching, some successful new careers.

I like to do a bit of random reading when I’m getting into the zone for this editorial. Helps to keep my mind inquisitive, or as my wife might say, quizzical! Anyway, in papers and magazines I was flicking through I spotted a lot of chatter about waste and recycling. It seems plastic has become public enemy number one – displacing tobacco, sugar, alcohol maybe even coal? Considering our love affair with plastic over the last 50 years, it is quite a change in sentiment. Plastic Man was once a superhero, getting his own comic book series way back in 1941. As with all superheroes, he had super powers. Like the plastic that ran through his veins, he was flexible, malleable, durable, invulnerable, even immortal. Plastic Man was also a hit song for the Kinks in 1969, who introduced him with the words He's got plastic flowers growing up the walls He eats plastic food with a plastic knife and fork He likes plastic cups and saucers 'cause they never break And he likes to lick his gravy off a, plastic plate Plastic was everywhere. It was cheap, easy to manufacture, versatile and totally waterproof. Clothes pegs to aeroplanes, water bottles to plumbing supplies, paper clips to computers, rubbish bags to condoms – everything seemed better in plastic. Who could forget the hours spent moulding plasticine into crude, colourful shapes. And where would Christmas be without Lego? With popularity like that, there was only ever one direction he could go. Too much success meant overexposure – Plastic Man became Toxic Man. But here’s the good news - redemption is at hand. Even as you are reading this, the Justice League is fighting back. The crack team of scientists, doctors, industrialists and environmentalists are uncovering ways to reuse, recycle, repurpose and safely dispose of Toxic Man. Plastic Man II can return - more thoughtful, more flexible, stronger, smarter - and bio-degradable. As the Kinks went on to say Kick his shin or tread on his face Pull his nose all over the place You can't disfigure, or disgrace Plastic man Recycle that bottle, repurpose those car tyres, spin the vinyl, get into the flow and chill. Tony, Byron Bazaar

This week's mantra

BELONG TO THOSE WHO BLESS YOU WITH THEIR BELIEF IN YOU. “May the frames of your belonging be generous enough for your dreams.” - John O’Donahue Surround yourself with people who both love you as you are, right now, and will dream with you about what’s next. The ones who both let you be as you are, and let you grow into the full expansion of yourself. Surround yourself with people who know you are already enough. And that you’re just getting started. Surround yourself with people who see your potential. Who sing your magic back to you when you forget the tune. Surround yourself with people who take you by the hands and look you in the eyes and say, I believe in you. I believe in your ideas. I know just how much you have to give. Say sayonara to the ones that keep you small. Surround yourself with people who help you expand. Belong to those who bless you with their belief in you.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

ON THURSDAY THE SUN MOVES INTO

intense and passionate Scorpio; tensions can escalate during the next few days, due to an opposition from Sun to Uranus (exact on Monday). This aspect is famous for throwing a spanner in even the bestoiled works. Try to stay flexible when sudden changes hit you hard. Try to bend rather than break by consciously reducing your resistance as much as possible. Mercury and Venus also reside in mysterious Scorpio, with Venus edging closer to Mercury every day. Feeling things out and tuning in works much better than asking inquisitive questions that only invite defiance or sarcastic remarks. Mercury is very slow and preparing to go retrograde on the 1st of November. It is a good idea to back up your electronic devices, service your car and generally make sure all gadgets are in good working order. The weekend holds surprises or sensual delights, courtesy of a Venus/Pluto sextile. Monday’s New Moon in Scorpio is potentially a difficult or disruptive day. Big things might be revealed or discovered. The Moon’s conjunction with the Sun is only a few hours out from the Uranus opposition; while weakened Mars in Libra forms a square to Saturn in serious Capricorn. Outer tension, internal conflict, or feeling controlled and limited might be some of the issues that come up. It may not be easy to talk about what is going on, in particular if deep feelings are overwhelming! It is not a good day for meetings, negotiations or socialising. Find something that nourishes your soul! For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

The 8 of Cups indicates low vitality, most likely because you have invested too much energy into a project or a person. Now you might be drained and exhausted. Maybe you have to abandon a hopeless situation; better now than later! When you let go you feel better…

h TAURUS

With the Fool Tarot card it’s time for spontaneous fun and adventure, which can lead to new insights. Depending on how much you trust yourself and how much courage you can gather, you might take a great leap forward towards the fulfilment of your heart’s desires during this week.

i GEMINI

With the 4 of Wands drawn you have reason to celebrate the successful completion of one phase of your life, and you might also get very excited about new possibilities that appear on your radar. Don’t rush too much though, take a breather and acknowledge the good work that has been done.

j CANCER

The 10 of Swords describes how negative thoughts and bad moods hurt your sensitive heart-space; it might feel as if they pierce your already hurting heart. Therefore as an act of self-care, it is important to soothe your nerves and relax your mind! Start with giving gratitude for the things that are working out for you right now…

The Princess of Wands symbolises an enthusiastic, free spirit. With her by your side you feel upbeat and optimistic. This is a great week for conjuring up new ideas for spontaneous self-expression, preferably in the form of a unique creative project or an adventure. Just bear in mind that others might not feel like you, therefore it might be something that you do by yourself.

l VIRGO

This week the Hierophant reveals his inner wisdom to you. He is the archetype that most facilitates teaching, counselling and consulting. An opportunity for development and great internal growth may present itself, in particular if you manage to keep your mind, heart and action absolutely aligned.

a LIBRA

The 6 of Disks promises success in business and negotiation matters. Your resourcefulness is one of your main assets and enables you to see opportunities where others don’t. Many of your accomplishments come from hard work, but your ability to visualise what you are trying to achieve also plays a big role in the manifestation process.

b SCORPIO

The Priestess nudges you to take time for some inward travel. Reconnecting with yourself comes easily in beautiful nature. There you can get in touch with your softness and your strength, while gathering enough trust in yourself to know that the messages you receive are relevant and true.

c SAGITTARIUS

The Knight of Disks suggests taking a break and reconsidering your overall situation. Maybe you have been investing a lot of time and energy into a project that is only returning small gains. Look for a new balance between work and play, or between holding onto your plans and letting go.

d CAPRICORN

The Empress Tarot card symbolises feminine leadership straight from the heart. Caring, sharing and nurturing are her natural ways, but she also has enough experience and inner wisdom to set clear limits if necessary. Even when you have to say ‘no’, you can express your kind and considerate tenderness!

e AQUARIUS

The 9 of Wands depicts great strength and stamina that are available for you. It is not so much a matter of pushing obstacles away with your willpower, which can be rather exhausting, but more about awareness and focus that help you to tap into latent potential and hidden reserves.

f PISCES

The Balance Tarot card assists your creative mind to connect with the longings of your heart, while at the same time considering practical necessities and requirements. Stay honest with yourself, especially if you are contemplating big moves or changes of your situation.

DEAR KEENWA, I recently started a conversation with a dear male, aged 65. On RSVP.com. He was so charming and asked to continue our chats on Whatsapp, rather than the dating site. I continued to have quite a rapport with this lovely man there. He has been so sensitive to my needs and desires, and even told me he would get his grandchildren to call me nana. I thought i'd found my soulmate! I was so moved as we haven’t even met yet. After his promise to call me which didn’t eventuate, I rang him and on his answer machine he sounds about 25 years old , as opposed to the declared 7th decade in our original chat! I am shocked, but still love this cyberspace-man. Should I continue with this fake relationship? - Age is a Myth

DEAR AGE IS A MYTH, Yes, deffo.

DEAR KEENWA, So I have recently been inspired to post videos on my social media accounts to really pump up my small business. As i'm just starting out, my following isn't too big. I do have one 'influencer' following me which I was pretty chuffed about. Until she started posting the exact same posts just after me. Her following is huge, and she's taking credit for my ideas. I am furious, crushed, feel powerless and desperately need advice. - Kopy Kat

DEAR KOPY KAT, I think you young folk call it piggybacking. Us ancient ones know it as good old fashioned imitation. The difference is we don't think we should feel 'so honoured and blessed' that some self-proclaimed, big time idiot is copying. We come from a school where to claim you know something, someone older and wiser taught you, and you credit them accordingly. As opposed to the current, I said it so I claim it or invented it gimmick. Honey, stop sharing your gifts and ideas for free. Once you value yourself, others will too.

This week's recommendation

ALBUM TITLE: Ghosteen (double-album) ARTIST: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds RELEASED: Oct 2019 (streaming) / Nov 2019 (physical) GENRE: Alternative Rock BIO: Since 1983 NC&TBSs have been making music,

Ghosteen is the 17th album release, 3rd in a trilogy of albums following Push the Sky & Skeleton Tree. Nick's 15-year-old son sadly passed away in 2015. The title Ghosteen draws influence from the word ghost and Irish literature. On the release, NC says, "The songs on the first album are the children. The songs on the second album are their parents. Ghosteen is a migrating spirit.’

WHAT TO EXPECT: Eerie, beautiful and delicate slow ballads over atmospheric scenes. Place yourself in the right headspace to appreciate the craft. You might recall Kylie Minogue's and NC’s hit duet Where the Wild Roses Grow, this release is far from that famed duet. WHAT WE LIKE: NC’s voice preaches from pulpit. Backing vocals, violin, synths, intricate percussion make for a spacious cold cathedral fitting for the guiding messages. Human yearning on Waiting for You is the word 'poignant' laid bare. On Ghosteen Speaks lyrics serve as a reminder that what’s departed lives with us. Challenging waters yes - but its rewarding explorations of memories, loss, and emotions, holding on and surviving. It is death as much as it is life and everything in between. To navigate the waves of Ghosteen let the words of poet William Ernest Henley be your compass "I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul." STANDOUT TRACKS: Waiting for You, Ghosteen, Fireflies. PERFECT FOR: Being lost and found at sea. Watching the horizon.

LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Tom Waits, R.E.M.

Recommended by Dan McGill.

BOOKS FOR Y

This week's review

TITLE: A Visit From The Goon Squad AUTHOR: Jennifer Egan NUMBER OF PAGES: 352 EST. READ TIME: 5 hours 52 minutes PRICE: $18.99 WHAT'S IT ABOUT? Bennie Salazar is an ageing record

executive and former punk rocker. We meet him at the beginning of the novel, as well as his employee Sasha, a passionate woman with her own personal problems. Throughout the novels we discover both of their back stories and interlocking narratives. Bennie and Sasha never truly learn one anothers stories but as the reader we know the events that have led up to the present, making it feel like we are in on a dirty little secret.

WHO IT'S FOR: Those up for reading a novel that goes against the grain and who love reading about layered characters.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Although the story isn’t

traditionally structured and it can feel a little confusing at times, it is worth the investment. The characters are beautifully complex and Jennifer Egan does things that’ll surprise you. Like devote an entire chapter that is written in powerpoint form. It’s a beautiful novel that challenges and rewards its reader equally.

NOTABLE QUOTE: "We stand there, quiet. My questions

all seem wrong: How did you get so old? Was it all at once, in a day, or did you peter out bit by bit? When did you stop having parties? Did everyone else get old too, or was it just you? Are other people still here, hiding in the palm trees or holding their breath underwater? When did you last swim your laps? Do your bones hurt? Did you know this was coming and hide that you knew, or did it ambush you from behind?" This week's review written by Jessie Hilton @jessieahilton

Emi Cataldi SURFER/BALLOON PILOT - @EMICATALDI

FIRSTLY, YOU WOULD KNOW AUSSIES LOVE ABBREVIATING NAMES – SO SHOULD I CALL YOU EMILIANO, EMIL OR EMI? Anything but Emil!! Emi will do. TELL US WHERE YOU ARE FROM, AND WHAT BRINGS YOU TO BYRON? I'm originally from Rome, but I've called Byron Bay (and Australia) home for the last 11 years. Much like every one else, the natural beauty is what lured me in the first place, but the lifestyle and the community is what has kept me here ever since. COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE – "I LOVE... the life Tay (my partner) and I have created, And our critters. Oh, and good waves!" YOU ARE A SURF WRITER, EXPLORER, ENGINEER, BALLOON PILOT - WHICH DO YOU PREFER? Somehow all of them fit in my daily life in one way or another, so I'll have to run with “all of the above”. YOUR SURFING AND BALLOONING EXPLOITS HAVE TAKEN YOU FAR AND WIDE – WHERE WOULD YOU GO BACK TO IN A HEARTBEAT? I'd love to fly a balloon over Rome! Given that the airspace is restricted over there I'll have to leave that as my last hurrah! When it comes to surfing it wouldn't take much work to convince me to hop on a flight to Africa. Or Haiti. Or Indonesia. BYRON IS RENOWNED FOR ITS WILD TURKEYS - FLOATING IN YOUR BALLOON, HAVE YOU EVER BEEN BUZZED BY A BRUSH TURKEY? No! Those things can hardly fly one meter above ground...But birds love flying close to our balloons, especially on cold winter mornings. And big birds like eagles often come up close and personal to check us out. IF YOU WENT TO A FANCY-DRESS PARTY, WHO WOULD YOU GO AS, AND WHY? I'd go as a pin up girl just to see the look on my friends' face. I'd probably cop a fair bit of friendly abuse but I'm sure it'll be worth it. To get sky high give visit www.balloonaloftbyronbay.com or reach us on 1300 723 279
