Festival kicks off this weekend, with some incredible films screening at Palace Cinemas, Byron Theatre, Pighouse Flicks, Brunswick Picture House and Murwillumbah Regent Cinema from this Saturday through next Sunday. Between the quirky shorts by local filmmakers, dramatic features such as A Son of Man, Ecuador’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, and gripping docos like Kifaru, which tracks the extinction crisis in real time, it’s a ripper of a program.

If you’re due for a hinterland excursion, Federal is the place to be Saturday for the 18th annual Federal Park Party. We’re told to expect plenty of kids activities, food, music, artisan stalls and more from 11am to 9pm – gather your fam and join the fun. Fun-runners have an early start on Sunday, with the 13th annual Byron Bay Lighthouse Run beginning at 7am sharp. There’s a 6km ($40) and a 10km ($45) option, as well as a 1km run for kids ($10), with funds raised supporting Headspace Lismore and the Women’s Resource Service at the Mullumbimby Neighbourhood Centre. For registration and info, visit byronbaylighthouserun.com.au. Also on Sunday, Harvest Newrybar will be hosting a botanical dye and indigo workshop from 11am to 4pm. Led by natural plant dyer and artist Victoria Larnach alongside permaculturist Janene Price of Love to Grow, the workshop will leave you with a beautifully dyed silk scarf and bento bag, as well as a bottle of cold-pressed olive oil infused with Harvest garden herbs. 1992. I was waiting to board a flight to Sydney and looking for something to read. A little paperback in the bookstore caught my eye - “The Popcorn Report”, written by Faith Popcorn. As well as wondering if that could really be her name, I was drawn to the headline – “Faith Popcorn, the Nostradamus of marketing”. Now we have all heard of Nostradamus and his famous prophecies. He may have written them nearly 500 years ago, but those prophecies are still in print, and he is still revered. I thought it would be quite a coup for a market researcher to be compared to the guru of all forecasters.

I bought the book, shoved it into my backpack and boarded the plane. I had forgotten all about that little book until last week, when I was clearing out the study. Flicking through the pages now, I wondered how history might judge these predictions from 1992.

5. As our tech world ramps up, approximately 5.2 billion people in the world have mobile devices. This accounts for 2/3rds of the world’s population. True or false?

I have to say, not earth shattering, but not bad. Popcorn did identify a key consumer trend - the desire to buy things that would simplify their lives, be customised, be home delivered, and yet still provide a sense of connection. Tick! Accuracy dropped when she identified solutions. Phone booths, where you could plug your PC in to retrieve emails and faxes; mini Walkman tape recorders, stacked with pre-recorded, personal music play lists; one-stop call centres, that you could ring to retrieve all the news, movie gossip, restaurant reviews, and latest entertainment offerings. These products may have been produced, but 25 years on they have all become redundant - overrun by wifi coffee shops, iPads, Spotify, Google search, podcasts and the ubiquitous smart phone.

When Faith wrote her report the world wide web was still in diapers and mobile phones were very expensive, very large and very unreliable. The blending of miniaturised batteries, blanket mobile phone services and a rampant internet has changed the world in ways Faith Popcorn could never have predicted. Smart phones are THE trend. To stay in print for 500 years, Faith should have followed Nostradamus’s lead. He used vague and obscure language to describe events, so that future followers could interpret and retrofit his predictions to match almost any modern catastrophe – AFTER the event takes place. It is all smoke and mirrors really. When you’re making predictions for a living, hindsight review is a wonderful thing! I predict your coffee will be going cold if you don’t get on with your day. This week's mantra DREAM, SPECIFICALLY.

Dream big is something we hear a lot throughout our lives. But I think the size of our dreams is less important than the specificity of our dreams. If I ask you, right now, to tell me what you want, I bet you couldn’t. At first, you’re going to disagree with this statement. But take a beat and marinate on it. Consider one area of your life where you have a big goal or a big dream. Do you really know what you want? Could you fill an entire page with the specifics of that dream or goal? We spend so much of our lives working toward goals and dreams that we haven’t even defined! It’s no wonder we feel like we’re chasing our tails sometimes. Because you can’t achieve your dreams until you commit to them. And in order to commit to a dream, you need to know exactly what it is. Don’t just draw a rough sketch of your dream. Really take the time to dream in full colour. How you define it is up to you. It might be qualities or terms or even feelings. Fill a page. Sit with it. Erase and revise. Let it be a living document, free to be edited, full of aliveness and rich in detail. The more life-like you make your dream, the more your dream can become your life. As writer Alan Cohen put it, “asking for what you want is a prerequisite for getting it.” So ask. Specifically. Before you go chasing a dream, take the time to know what it is. P.S. The third annual Byron Bay Guitar Festival (BBGF), an independently organised event that celebrates music inspired by the guitar and communities built from live music, rocked Byron Bay Brewery again last weekend (Sat 12 & Sun 13 October). Defying presumptions about what a ‘Guitar Festival’ has to offer, BBGF 2019 displayed a diversity of artists, genres, masterclass topics, and instrument displays to appeal to just about every lover of music and of any age. Folk, roots, blues, jazz, world, reggae, psychedelic, soul, funk, punk, rock, electronic, pop, classical, experimental, grunge, indie, and everything in between – there was something for lovers of all music.

DEAR MALE GAZE, Don't quote me, but I think bush began to bite back when Trump grabbed. Contrary to politician's beliefs, nudity is natural. Nudity does not mean sex. Perhaps with art, if we tilt our heads just right, we can see the message that the human body in it's natural form is pretty damn beautiful as is. Perhaps in art, our kids can adore their own flesh and blood, and can look at the planet in the same appreciating way, and stop mucking it up. Perhaps in art, we can decolonise our bodies, teach basic pleasure, consent, and to feel good naked. Or we could just continue to exploit our clothed selves on Insta and keep serving the capitalist machina that makes way too many bucks off our body hatred.

DEAR ROMANCE REVIVAL, You would think so. Yet I once dated a man that held me captive as he read me his slightly depressing poetry in front my car headlights on a cold, dark night, his greasy hair covering his face, crack running through his veins, whilst my friends giggled on in the car, watching. We weren't allowed to leave until he finished. Daybreak finally arrived. Another fella did the same on an isolated bridge in the wee hours of dawn, then threatened to jump afterwards, which confused me, as after listening to him for so many hours, should really have been me jumping. I don't know if its any coincidence that realism directly followed the era of romanticism.

We're actually finishing up a film at the moment from three months spent traveling around New Zealand on motorbikes, so this next trip is a sort of follow up to that. IF YOU WENT TO A FANCY-DRESS PARTY, WHO WOULD YOU GO AS, AND WHY? Anyone that wears a cape. There’s not enough opportunities to wear capes. BYRON IS RENOWNED FOR ITS WILD TURKEYS – HAVE YOU EVER INCLUDED A BRUSH TURKEY IN ONE OF YOUR FILMS? Haha no I haven’t. I think they deserve a film though. I’m sure someone is working on one…?
