SATURDAY SEEMS TO BE THE DAY

to get amongst it this week, starting with a screening of Fleabag, the hilarious, awardwinning, one-woman show that inspired the BBC’s hit TV series of the same name. Recorded live for the big screen from London’s West End, the show (written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge) will be screened at Byron Theatre at 1pm on Saturday, and again on Tuesday at 6:30pm (tickets $25; byroncentre.com.au).

Week

Also kicking off at lunchtime on Saturday is the Hotel Brunswick’s third annual Oktoberfest bash, with German food stalls, outdoor bars, photo booths, live music, a kids club, competitions, and steins to purchase. Prost! If that’s not enough, the Byron Bay Guitar Festival kicks off at Byron Bay Brewery at 1:30pm with more than 25 performances packed into the two-day schedule. While most punters will no doubt be gunning to catch The Delta Riggs (9:10pm Saturday), Frenzal Rhomb (10:50pm Saturday) and Harts (9pm Sunday), my inner 80s child is curious to see what Nathan Cavaleri (4:20pm Saturday) has been up to since his child prodigy days hanging out with Jimmy Barnes and, er, Michael Jackson. For more info and tickets, head to byronbayguitarfestival.com. On Sunday, it’s over to Lennox Hotel for The Comedy Commune. Head upstairs from 3pm to catch eight comedians over two hours for just $8, with headliner Ellen Briggs (one half of the dynamic duo Women Like Us) sure to provide plenty of LOLs. Bargain right? Get your mitts on tickets via stickytickets.com.au.

I RECEIVED A LETTER

the other day. How nice to go to the mailbox and pull out an envelope that wasn’t a bill. It was a thank you letter from one of our great local charities (call out to you, Northern Rivers Collectors Club), and it made my day. It got me thinking about the shire and its sense of community. I wondered if there was anything that WAS disappointing or annoying about Byron – and up came the brush turkey! The poor old brush turkey has a bad rep here – a bit like the ibis up on the Gold Coast. “Those pests”, I thought, “running across the road, scratching about in my flower beds, chasing off the pretty rainbow beeeaters. What the heck are they doing here?” Ten minutes of Wiki searching, and my views may need to change. The brush turkey turns out to be a hardy, indigenous fossicker, with some quite remarkable talents. The male spends a month creating a nest the size of a Ford Mustang to attract a female mate. These nests are like giant compost heaps. They generate lots of heat to incubate any eggs mum lays. Dad covers the eggs with leaves and regulates the temperature of the mound by testing it with his built-in oven thermometer – a heat sensitive beak – adding or removing leaves as required. The males do such a good job that incubation is almost fully automated, allowing mum and dad some R&R. When they hatch, the poor young chicks must dig themselves out of a shit heap, and then learn to fly, forage and fend for themselves quickly, or that’s it! Aboriginal legend has the brush turkey (“Gweela”) front and centre in a Dreaming about co-operation and community. Threatened by a snake, a group of turkeys will band together to perform the “dance of death”, circling the intruder and stamping their feet. The mob draws closer and closer, until they finally go in for the kill. In the 1970’s, this sense of angry community dancing was performed by turkeys at many a dance club - sometimes as the “Nutbush”, or the “Bus Stop”, or most frighteningly, the popular but now banned, “Funky Chicken”. The brush turkey’s community spirit, cooperation and ability to latte and party, whilst still bringing up the kids, must deserve some thanks and respect. The thermo-beak could also be handy this weekend, to help monitor the heat on the dancefloor as the guitar heroes smash out the hits - and you stay chilled with the vibe. Tony, Byron Bazaar

This week's mantra

RESISTANCE ISN’T A STOP SIGN.

Hello dear reader! Yes, it’s still me! Same column, new name. Heavily Meditated is now Word Up. Why? I have a book called Heavily Meditated coming out in March (about, yes, meditation!) So it was time to give the column a new name. I hope these weekly words will continue to UPgrade your vibe. Big love, CC

Whatever you're resisting is a pathway to full potential. The greater the resistance, the greater the opportunity. The role of resistance is to keep you in the known, where you feel safe and comfortable. But like I've said before, resistance tells you it's keeping you safe, but it's really keeping you small. Nonetheless, resistance is an important messenger. You just need to learn to interpret the signals differently. When you notice resistance pop up (it looks like procrastination, self-doubt, self-sabotage, waffling, and hesitating), pay attention. But instead of interpreting resistance as a bad sign, start seeing it as a great sign. Resistance isn't a sign that you should stop. It's a sign that you should GO. It's a signal you that you're on to something. Resistance tells you that what stands before you is a bonafide opportunity. A call for expansion. A shot at showing up and shining in a wonderful new way. Resistance is a beacon, guiding you towards everything you are capable of - A.K.A. your full potential. So stop wasting all that energy dancing around the fire of resistance and instead, walk through it. Let the flames burn away your fear. What will be left is the truth of you: limitless possibility, boundless will, courageous action. Once you break through the seal of resistance, the rest is easy. Because moving through resistance is a muscle. Every time you walk through resistance instead of turning away, you melt another layer of self-doubt and build your strength and resolve. You uplevel. You get closer to your highest self, your fullest potential. It's time to stop letting resistance run your shit. Bite the bullet. Sit down. Sketch it out. Make the call. Write it down. Press send. Raise your hand. Start the damn thing. Finish the damn thing. Because you are bigger than the resistance you feel. And your potential is waiting on the other side.

Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

FRIDAY AND SATURDAY ARE WONDERFUL

days for a romantic outing with your beloved. Alternatively a quiet retreat in nature or with your favourite pet project might also fill your heart and spirit. The Moon is joining Neptune, the planet that represents inspiration, dreams and creative longings, while Mercury and Venus are in deep and meaningful Scorpio. On Sunday Lady Venus opposes Uranus in Taurus; she might be in a strange mood, easily upset or brooding. There could be a lot of mood changes to cope with during the time leading up to the Full Moon in Aries on Monday. The morning starts upbeat, friendly and forgiving. A Sun/Jupiter sextile invites you to look at the bigger picture and focuses enthusiastically on all future opportunities. During the day however, tensions might build up and inner conflicts may lead to arguments, due to unconscious behaviour (Sun square Pluto). The key to navigating these currents is communication; don’t retreat and sulk if things are not going your way, rather come clear and talk about it. A lovely Mercury/Neptune trine kicks in on Tuesday (exact on Wednesday). It favours any creative or visionary endeavours and lets you dream big. Ideals and ideas, powered by deep experiences, might soar to great heights. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

d CAPRICORN

The Fool Tarot card represents a new, heartfelt and carefree beginning. How often in your life have you been bogged down with worries and latent fear of the unknown? Now is the time to say yes to your deepest desires and to go for what makes your heart sing.

The 3 of Disks is very much in line with the Virgo spirit; it is about persistence, tenacity, service and commitment. This week you might find that clear intention-setting brings great results and it assists you to move beyond doubt and uncertainty.

i GEMINI

a LIBRA

The 4 of Cups asks for selfreflection and re-evaluation of any less than satisfactory parts of your life, but at the same time you have to stay realistic and avoid the dangers of purely wishful thinking. It is a good idea to start practising gratitude for the things that are working out for you, in particular around the Full Moon time!

The 10 of Cups symbolises deep fulfilment and ecstatic well-being. These profoundly satisfying feelings radiate out into the world when you relate to other people and they might be a very uplifting gift. You have so much to give right now and it is your delight to share!

j CANCER

The Queen of Swords is honest, forthright and quick on the uptake. With her by your side you may navigate the deep emotional waters of this week without much trouble. You might learn a great lesson about speaking up and being counted, instead of just walking away and hiding your feelings.

The 10 of Disks’ theme is self-worth, as opposed to pride and status. If your self-appreciation depends on what you have and what you’ve done, it is very fragile and dependent. One mistake can bring down the whole thing. However if you unconditionally love yourself your foundations are secure and long-lasting.

With Sun, Mars and the Full Moon in your sign plus the 8 of Disks drawn your main effort this week is avoiding emotional swamps, disagreements and confrontations. Instead you are interested in pursuing a greater understanding of the human condition. The main question is: What makes people tick the way they do? Then just allow them to be.

b SCORPIO

The 6 of Wands promises success and victory this week. You might feel quite elated about achieving what you want, but you also have to be aware of the price you may pay! Remember that creating win-win solutions for everyone involved is the ultimate victory.

The Justice Tarot card appears when you are challenged to use all the foresight and insight you can muster. This is not the week to jump to conclusions! To determine right action you have to take time to carefully weigh all sides of an issue and stay centred. How you act now might have long-term consequences.

In the light of the Moon Tarot card you are prone to misconceptions and illusions. Be careful during the Full Moon time and don’t allow any diffuse fears or anxieties to confuse you. Clear boundaries are necessary and maybe also a re-commitment to be authentic, rather than dutiful.

e AQUARIUS

The 3 of Cups indicates great fulfilment, a time of great caring and sharing of all the abundance that life on earth is offering. Your true humanitarian spirit shines through everything you do. This is a great week for fostering the community spirit, networking and socialising with a purpose.

f PISCES

With the Magician Tarot card drawn you are in for a truly magical ride! He supports you in any creative endeavour and provides a ‘can-do’ attitude. Keep focusing on what you want to produce, stay centred and don’t let old doubts get the best of you. Timing is also crucial; right action at the wrong time will not bring the results you envision.

YOUTH MENOTRSHIP APPS CLOSE OCT 14TH! ALL TIX SELLING FAST. BOOK NOW!

a w n e r e a e K D om AncienTHtE Wisd er Grain Moth FR OM

DEAR KEENWA, I am being stalked. Through all formats - calls, text, email, as well as my personal details shared with others. He knows my meal times, the current health status of our pets, holiday plans, and work hours. I have considered going to the police, but the worst thing is, I actually gave him my number originally, unaware that he would turn like this. Any suggestions? My family and I are terrified. - Privacy Breach

DEAR PRIVACY BREACH, I'm so sorry to hear. But this sounds like a classic case of school craft coordinator. Not only can these peeps knit and sew, they have the persistence of an undercover agent, always aware of your most private moves – from dinner time to exact weekend plans, opportunistically staking, always ready to catch you out and hit you with just one more volunteer shift or gluing session. Whatever you do, do not give them eye contact, they're also experts on body language.

DEAR KEENWA, My kid found the crystal in my pocket that i'd purchased for him to be 'tooth fairy' last week. He bawled his eyes out, and asked me to tell him the truth if the Tooth Fairy was real or not? I told him i'd get back to him after I asked you. So, Aunty Keenwa... what to do? Will I crush his soul if I lie, or his trust if I play fairy? - Rock and a Hard Place

DEAR ROCK AND A HARD PLACE, According to developmental child psychologists, it is best to support your child as they work it out for themselves. Research in the field of developmental psychology suggests that such fantastical beliefs are not actually harmful, but are associated with a number of positive developmental outcomes from exercising the counterfactual reasoning skills needed for human innovation, to boosting emotional development. The approach I like to take is that of the politician fairy. Don't admit anything, don't not admit anything. You feel me?

winning hearts and Arias since their first album, Moonfire, hit in 2011. After a health induced hiatus, they've just released their fourth album, Suck on Light.

WHAT TO EXPECT: A balance between the classic 'Boy

& Bear sound' and a new, darker ambience. Its songs will take you from upbeat, folk rock bangers to moody night time moments with one thing stringing it all together; the emotional invocation of strength and resurgence. There is no doubt these themes are influenced by lead singer, Dave Hosking’s, battle with illness that lends a depth and honesty to the music.

WHAT WE LIKE: Boy & Bear have managed to introduce

new elements into their music whilst fulfilling audience expectation of their recognisable sound. The first track, Work of Art, will instantly focus your attention with a heavy vocal layering similar to Bon Iver. The album continues to play with strings and vocal harmonies to accentuate these heavier moments. It progresses to find a bassy, catchy, groove with Bad People, its bluesy guitar with Bird of Paradise and even slips into the flowing sounds of 70's rock with Off My Head. Although the album is striped with fresh motifs, the boys don’t forget to build around their thumbprint sound including multiple guitars, tambourine, keys and quirky percussion.

STANDOUT TRACKS: Work of Art, Bird of Paradise, Bad People.

PERFECT FOR: Feeling empowered and triumphant e.g.

kicking down doors in slow motion or more chill stuff like getting pumped before a night out.

LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: Powderfinger, Gang of Youths.

BOOKS FOR Y

This week's review

TITLE: The Ruin AUTHOR: Dervla McTiernan NUMBER OF PAGES: 380 EST. READ TIME: 7 hours 10 minutes PRICE: $24.99 WHAT'S IT ABOUT? In 1993 Detective Cormac Reilly

is on his first day on the job when he is called to a run down house to check in on two small children. What he finds will change the course of his and the children’s lives forever. Flash to twenty years later. Cormac Reilly is a respected member of the Garda, and has moved on from the memories that shook him all those years ago. But a young man’s suicide will thrust history back into the spotlight, leaving Cormac with no choice but to reinvestigate all he thought he knew as a junior officer.

WHO IT'S FOR: Lovers of who-dunnits. WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: Like any successful crime novel there is an underlying sense that something isn’t quite what it seems that runs throughout the book’s pages.

NOTABLE QUOTE: "It was a long time before Cormac realised that Maude had not come back. And some time later before he thought to check for her. A full two hours passed before an agitated Tully arrived and they did a proper search of the ground floor bathrooms, the cafe and the public wards, and realised that she probably wasn’t in the hospital. In the end, that was the only search that was ever carried out for fifteen year old Maude Blake. She was labelled a runaway, and with no family to notice or care that she was gone, the system forgot her. Eventually, Cormac Reilly forgot her too."

Did you know we only deliver Byron Bazaar to our readers? YOU ARE MORE THAN JUST A BRILLIANT GUITARIST – YOU ARE A SINGER, SONGWRITER, AND A MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST – WHICH DO YOU PREFER? They’re all pretty much tied into one now. But I would say I’m most comfortable being in the studio, composing and producing music. Writing music is where a lot of the magic happens for me, and it gives me so much joy. COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE – "I LOVE... being able to create. Whatever medium that takes and the freedom I feel when I can create." YOU COMPOSE, PRODUCE AND RECORD IN YOUR BEDROOM – MUST BE A BIG ROOM? In my parent’s house it was pretty small. When I moved out I used a spare bedroom in my house and turned it into a bit of a studio. It was a little bit bigger, but still much smaller than a traditional “studio” studio. But, it’s comfortable and works for me. IF YOU WENT TO A FANCY-DRESS PARTY, WHO WOULD YOU GO AS, AND WHY? Hmm don’t know. Maybe Lando Calrissian from Star Wars… Always been a big SW fan. I dressed up as him for a school disco when I was about 10. I’d like to give it another shot as adult aged me. WHO WINS IN A STOUSH BETWEEN A BRUSH TURKEY AND A GNOME, AND WHY? Gotta be honest. That’s one crazy question. I’ll go the brush turkey… for no reason I can explain. YOU SEEM TO BE ALWAYS ON THE MOVE - WHERE CAN PEOPLE CATCH YOU OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS? Byron Bay Guitar Festival is all at the moment. But plenty of plans in the works for 2020 and beyond! See Harts and many more at the Byron Bay Guitar Festival 12-13th October. byronbayguitarfestival.com
