I JUST HAD THREE WEEKS IN THE UK, CATCHING UP WITH FAMILY AND

friends. A few days in Liverpool - most famously the home of the Beatles – reminded me of their mark on the music scene. Has there ever been a better group than the Beatles? Abbey Road, Let It Be, Sgt. Peppers, Magical Mystery Tour, Revolver, Rubber Soul – the list goes on and on. Maybe I will ask our DJ to review a few of their albums for you in a classic edition of Ear Candy – see how they compare to the tunes he has been recommending. In London I caught some theatre in the West End – there’s nothing quite like a good stage show. “The Woman in Black” is one of London’s longest running shows - described as a “brilliantly successful study in atmosphere, illusion and controlled horror”. It was all of that and more! Makes me want to check out the Byron Community Theatre program. I know they are showing “The Lehman Trilogy” in a few weeks, and that had great reviews in London. Wandering round the Farmers Markets last week, sampling the sweet and delicious Lady Finger bananas (thankyou Craig) and all the other fresh, local produce, I was glad to be home. Sunny days, rolling waves, tasty treats, evening vibes – it’s all happening again this week in the shire. Who wouldn’t want to get out amongst it?! As Lennon & McCartney put it – I need to laugh and when the sun is out I've got something I can laugh about I feel good in a special way I'm in love and it's a sunny day Enjoy the week ahead, and here’s to staying chilled, not chilly! HEAVILY Meditated

TM

With Caitlin Cady

This week's mantra YOU CHOOSE YOUR VIBE.

This column is part of a 4-part series on daily rituals that will help you retrain your mind and reclaim the goodness, joy and delight in your life by cultivating a positive perspective. Catch up on past columns on the Byron Bazaar website.

RITUAL 3: MEDITATE. Meditating first thing allows you to set the psychological and emotional tone for your day, and helps to prevent reactivity, stress, anxiety and overwhelm from hijacking your vibe. When you meditate in the morn, you establish yourself in the calm and stable centre of sovereignty and set out into your day with solid footing, a map of self-awareness, and a compass with the needle pointing towards your intentions. When the time comes to step out into the world, you’ll find that you aren’t easily triggered, or pushed and pulled by whatever comes your way. Because when you meditate, you choose your vibe.

NEW - HYPNOTHERAPY - BYRON BAY

Working together with deep relaxation methods to address your Life concerns and achieve a more harmonious way to be. Make Appt with Julia 0404 863 757

Not only that, but meditation also imbues your waking hours with fierce focus, enhanced productivity and creativity, and undoubtedly upgrades the quality of your presence. If you’re an esoteric subscriber, the “ambrosial hours” (two and a half hours before sunrise) are believed to be the most spiritually profound time of day. Many traditions claim that there is a higher concentration of Prana or Qi (both terms for life-force energy) during this time. Meditating in that window of time allows you to harness energy more readily and manifest intentions more easily. I personally give this theory a resounding “TRUE DAT.” So if you’re game, DO IT IN THE DARK. ;) New to meditation? No worries, I’ve got your back! Tarotscopes WEEKLY TAROT FORECAST

SUN, MERCURY, VENUS AND MARS CONTINUE

their close-knit journey through analytical, practical but also critical Virgo. Thursday and Friday are great days to get things done, plans executed and lists ticked off. Saturn trines Sun and Mercury and keeps us disciplined and focused on our responsibilities. After that a stressful t-square between Sun/ Mercury, Jupiter and Neptune kicks in and things might get a big nebulous and confusing. Communication may be challenging during the weekend and beyond, so make sure you express yourself as clearly as possible to avoid misunderstandings. However, this may be a highly creative time if you work on a project by yourself. Don’t jump to conclusions or make any big decisions right now. It may feel to you as if you are the only rational person and everyone else is a bit off kilter, but others might think that too! From Saturday to Tuesday first Venus and then Mercury form a potentially transformative earthtrine to Pluto. Maybe you are graced with a profound ‘aha’ experience that helps you to integrate a part of yourself which you have been neglecting for a long time… Things work out best if you take responsibility and ownership of how you feel and try to improve your experience, rather than finding fault in others and trying to improve them. This is an intense week; tread softly and gather as much compassion for the human condition as possible! For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g ARIES

With the 5 of Wands drawn you might feel as if you’re in a pressure-cooker this week. Maybe you feel hassled by circumstances that you resent, or you feel irritated by setbacks and you start arguing with yourself and/ or others. Try to relax and remember as often as possible that this will pass soon…

h TAURUS

The Wheel of Fortune appears when you are at a turning point in your personal evolution. You may find that you can adopt a more sophisticated outlook, a kind of birds-eye perspective, on how to act and react to sudden curved balls that used to challenge you a lot in the past. This new approach allows you to breathe right through any upheaval and stay centred.

BY GISELA

k LEO

The 9 of Wands indicates that you have plenty of resilience, physical strength and emotional intelligence to sail smoothly through this week. Hold onto your big plans and find a way to tap into unexplored or hidden reserves. Invigorating exercise might help you to let off steam and feel your power.

l VIRGO

The Emperor Tarot card assists you to stay on top of this confusing week. Your challenge may be finding your own inner equilibrium between giving selfless service and asserting your leadership. Setting limits without feeling guilty might be your main task.

a LIBRA

The Ace of Disks gifts you with great grounding this week. You stay practical and down-to-earth when your feathers are ruffled. Therefore you can still get great results and flourish during this intense time. You may feel like a rock or anchor to others.

When the Devil Tarot card appears it is time to deal with your own shadow – those parts of yourself that you would rather not acknowledge. Dysfunctional relationships with others, or with yourself might be in your face and undeniable. Take stock, consider your options and find ways to free yourself from addictive behaviour or codependency that enslaves you.

j CANCER

b SCORPIO

i GEMINI

The 3 of Wands suggests taking the high road and acting with foresight while setting an example. Sure, you could sulk and blame other people for any challenge or misery. Empowerment however only comes if you take charge, provide meaningful direction and spiritual guidance.

The Lovers Tarot card highlights your desire to connect with others while staying true to yourself. Maybe you are in the process of overcoming loner-tendencies. You are growing beyond feeling disappointed in affairs of the heart, towards a more all-encompassing, inclusive compassion for everyone involved, even yourself.

c SAGITTARIUS

The Knight of Wands suggests that the time is ripe for a leap of faith! Bring on the changes you have been dreaming about and make things happen. If you hold your energy back, you might feel very irritated and frustrated. You spent enough time analysing pros and cons; now is the time to say ‘yes’!

d CAPRICORN

With 7 planets in earth signs and the 6 of Disks drawn you may achieve lots this week. In your practical and downto-earth ways you make sure, that not only your life is on track, but that you also mentor your loved ones on the subject. You might even brighten the lives of random strangers.

e AQUARIUS

The Prince of Wands is charming, daring and confident. With him by your side you can get what you want from others. They can’t resist your charisma, but they also love hanging out with you because you spice up conversations, and your passion for life is contagious. This is a great week for travelling and socialising.

f PISCES

With the Empress Tarot card drawn you might prefer to retreat into your own private sanctuary during this challenging week. Take time to nurture your soul in beautiful nature and cherish the peaceful states you can enter. This will protect and guide you all day.

This week's recommendation ALBUM TITLE: Story's Start or End ARTIST: SAFIA RELEASED: August 2019 GENRE: Electronica / Indie Pop

BIO: Hailing from Newcastle the dance trio's 2nd album has been eagerly anticipated by fans since their critically acclaimed debut album, Internal, in 2016.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Melodic chords and hooks blended

over telling tempos and grooves. It is sweet and soulful without any extra teaspoons of sugar being stirred in.

WHAT WE LIKE: The delicate track, Ivory Lullaby,

whimsically lets you in easily to the album. The style varies enough to keep you interested without trying too hard. Lyrics cover life's nitty-gritty at times to create comforting empathy with the listener for an overall uplifting record. As ever lyrics are open to interpretation and on Think We're Not Alone you might wonder who SAFIA believes is out there. Is it Google or Facebook tracking us, aliens amongst us or animals watching in the woods? And this track is perceivably the best way to embrace the album with yourself placed at the centre of SAFIA's sphere of clever soundscapes within a space-esque soundtrack of twinkling sonic lights and gems. The aptly titled final track Story's Start or End sews the work all together. Be willing to hit the auto-repeat button to discover the album does not necessarily have a start, middle or end, instead it is all about the flow.

STANDOUT TRACKS:

- Ivory Lullaby - Cellophane Rainbow - Story's Start or End

PERFECT FOR: BBQ beats, finding flow while stargazing or moonrise at the beach.

LISTEN IN IF YOU LIKE: Daft Punk, RĂœFĂœS DU SOL, Cut Copy, Peking Duk.

BOOKS FOR Y

This week's review

TITLE: Inheritance AUTHOR: Dani Shapiro NUMBER OF PAGES: 272 EST. READ TIME: 3 hours 54 minutes PRICE: $25.90 WHAT'S IT ABOUT? Dani Shapiro's world is turned

upside down when her husband sends off their DNA to set up a gimmicky Ancestry.com profile. Upon the test's return it is revealed that Dani's father was not in fact her biological father. At fifty four years old, and with both her parents passed, Dani must grapple with this information and move forward in a world that no longer makes much sense. She has spent her whole adult life publishing memoirs and building a career on self evaluation and now, she must rethink it all.

WHO IT'S FOR: Biography bingers and those intrigued by a tale filled with family secrets.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: This book is beautifully

written and laced with references to Dani’s faith. Inheritance enters into the nature vs nurture debate and asks the question... what does it really mean to be related to someone by blood? I loved every page of Inheritance. It was a story so human, so relatable that I would read it again for it’s endless pockets of wisdom. This book was a reminder that as individuals we are constantly learning, evolving and questioning what it is that makes us uniquely us.

NOTABLE QUOTE: "There is in each of us a fundamental split between what we think we know and what we know but may never be able to think"

DEAR KEENWA, Head lice. Where to start? That's the effing problem, they never end. As a single mum, I only have two hands, so am outnumbered by both children and nits. Last week I did the treatment three times! It takes a total of two hours each time, and one night I had to choose between feeding the lice or killing the kids. Just as soon as they are gone, they come home from school with them again! I'm done. Tell me is this a Byron thing? - Unlucky In Lice

DEAR UNLUCKY IN LICE, It sure as hell was not this bad in the 80s was it? I wonder if the 5G tower helps those pesty guys multiply? It's certainly worth putting in a proposal at the next West Byron meeting for a vaccination for them. It seems that meditating on love and light just doesn't seem to be getting to the root of the problem.

DEAR KEENWA, My fave local cafe is under new management and I can no longer get my Moroccan chicken drumsticks. I repeat, I can no longer get my Moroccan chicken drumsticks. I’ve been having them for years now, and they were my favourite part of the day. The newbies have offered kofta balls as an alternative. Like, are they serious? Should I shame them into bringing back the old menu on Insta? Open to any other wise suggestions. Hangry Sad face

DEAR HANGRY SAD FACE, I once got in an argument about the difference between balls and sticks. I personally think it has nothing to do with 'what you do with them.' As we can see here, you're dealing with two entirely different machines. I can't see a better way than staging a chicken coup. All over their shopfront. Of course there's always good 'ol fashioned nonviolent communication. Put in a lovely order with an appreciative smile on yer dial.

Poppy Galactic @POPPYGALACTIC_ANDTHEBEAT

YOU ARE ONE HALF OF POPPY GALACTIC AND THE BEAT, WHO IS THE OTHER HALF? TELL US ABOUT YOUR VIBE... The other half is my husband Terepai - all round rad Dad and drummer for John Butler Trio, The Whitlams and if you’ve been around long enough Directions in Groove. We make tunes for kids to dance to with a galactic perspective of life on Earth. IS MAKING MUSIC FOR KIDS RATHER THAN ADULTS EASIER, OR HARDER? Kids are definitely quicker to dance in my experience. Less self-conscious, freer, more in their bodies. But we’re still experimenting with the beats they resonate with most. ANY ADVICE OR INSPO FOR ADULTS BITCHIN BOUT NOT HAVING AS MUCH FUN AS THE KIDS? Be like a kid. Channel your inner 3 year old and dance like everyone’s watching. It’s way more fun. EVER BEEN ASKED TO COVER "BABY SHARK"? Not yet. But “baby star” could be a good space angle if we are. YOU ARE OFF TO A FANCY DRESS PARTY, WHO ARE YOU DRESSED AS? Ziggy Stardust. IN A TERRITORIAL STANDOFF BETWEEN BRUSH TURKEYS AND GARDEN GNOMES WHO WOULD WIN AND WHY? Brush turkeys due to their mad “birdie necklace” (as my son calls it) which must hold super powers of some kind. ANY FUNNY ROCK N ROLL / ON TOUR STORIES YOU CAN DISCLOSE? Terepai was recently on tour with John Butler Trio OS but having sheer commitment to our band and the community, we picked him up from the airport and drove straight to a gig at Coorabell’s Hogwarts fete. WHAT DOES BYRON NEED MORE OR LESS OF? More people harnessing the energy of our closest star, the sun. Catch Poppy Galactic and the Beat at Federal Hall for Peripalooza, 2-4pm on Sunday 15th Sep. with Bunny Racket, raising money for Periwinkle Preschool. Future gigs in our solar system include Lismore on Sep 21st and the Bangalow on Oct 27th.
