Festive vibes are really starting to buzz around the Shire. It’s a wonderful time to check out our amazing local craftspeople and choose handmade wares as Christmas gifts. The Newrybar Makers Market is a great chance to do this and it’s on both Saturday and Sunday at Newrybar Hall from 8am to 3pm. There’s going to be a lovely collection of local designers, makers and artisans so make sure you check it out. If you love finding a bargain check out the pre-loved fashion sale at the Green Bistro on Sunday. It’s more of a party than a clothes sale with live music, drinks specials and of course a spot of bowls. Tonight in Mullum is the world premier of the feature documentary Mullumbimby’s Madness – The Legacy Of The Hippies. Then on Saturday at the Byron Brewery the Bay Blow Out is on featuring The Cairos from 3pm to midnight (tickets are $15). Ellen Briggs and Mandy Nolan are also hosting their Women Like Us comedy show at Ocean Shores Country Club. Anonymous __________________________________________ I understand the increase in Police presence in town over ‘Schoolies’, however the recent blitzes by the Highway Patrol Police is like nothing I’ve seen. Booking people for minor offences like they are notorious criminals, and with aggression and bad attitude. I understand they have a job to do, and revenue to raise (you can usually tell that when the crackdown on things like not wearing bike helmets happen around the end of the month, mean their quotas are low & it’s an easy grab) but the way these Police behave is extreme. The local cops don’t carry on like that (usually). Booking people for leaving their cars unlocked right outside their own houses? Really? What is it about these Highway Patrolmen?!

Mick __________________________________________ So there I am, making my daily pilgrimage down Bangalow Road in Byron’s ever ridiculously increasing peak hour traffic, having a good old singalong to Kylie’s Greatest Hits when lo and behold - ANOTHER cyclist just wanders onto the middle of the road without a care in the world. I am constantly having to dodge and weave around these assorted obstacles on a daily basis, the riders of said bikes generally looking like they are more interested in swanning along pretending to be extras in an Angus and Julia Stone music video rather than actually paying attention to the road they are sharing. In the last week alone it was only my quick thinking and heavy footed braking that stopped two very near disasters! Sure, Byron Bay is a great place to “tune out, drop out, chill out” or what have you, but a little more road sense from our two-wheeled friends is long overdue.
