The sleepy village of Federal is going to be not quite so sleepy this Saturday. They are having a Park Party from noon until late with a stack of live acts, a busking competition, tasty food, a dog show and games of ‘tug of love’. If you don’t end up in Federal in the late afternoon, you could hit Sumba Sounds at Peace, Love & Vegetables. It’s $10 with all profits going to Sumba Sounds SurfAid. That one kicks off at 5pm and The Babe Rainbow, M Jack B and The Ruins are playing, just to name a few. On Sunday The Byron Bay Lighthouse Run is on starting at Clarkes Beach at 7am. It’s all for a good cause and there are categories for everyone so check out their website if you fancy joining in. Also on this Sunday in Byron, there’s a super cool market happening that uses trash instead of cash. It’s the Seaside Scavenge and with the stuff you pick up off the beach you can buy second-hand clothes or beer at The Beach Hotel. You’ll also be able to enjoy some tunes, upcycling workshops, maybe win a prize and hear a number of talks from active local residents. Check out seasidescavenge.org for more info. Enjoy! Dear Keenwa is Byron Bay’s answer to Miss Manners. Have a burning question? Go on, ask Keenwa anything… byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

Dear Keenwa,

My friends say all I do is look at my phone when I am with them. Why should I limit my audience to my 3 besties when I can reach my 945 Instagram followers? - Social Butterfly

Dear Social Butterfly,

Ever been hugged by a phone? The metal is kinda cold on your skin, and its body a little stiff. Yeah sure it vibrates, and can’t knock you up (yet), but did you know that we actually release dopamine at the sound of our phone ringing? Even more disturbing, is the research that shows the flurry of activation in the insular cortex of the brain, which is associated with feelings of love and compassion. Your phone may be (controversially) safer than crack, but ‘do me’ eyes to a gadget? Turn. It. Off. At least for a day or so. Go talk to a real human who is also away from their phone. Ain’t nothing dope about the fact that if you keep this up, the only attendee at your funeral will be a woman named Siri.

Dear Keenwa,

I’m taking my boyfriend home to Melbourne for the first time for my bestie’s wedding. Thing is, he has the worst white-boy dance moves I’ve ever seen. Literally. I love him dearly but I’m a bit nervous for what’s about to go down on the d-floor. How do I politely encourage him to tone it down? - Blushing Bridesmaid

Dear Blushing Bridesmaid,

Are you sure about that ‘dear’ love? It sounds like you love parts of him. What else are you getting him to tone down? We nitpick and put down and compare our men to our sisters, emancipating them in the process, then complain they’re not manly enough. The poor buggers can’t win. I had the honour of sitting in a men’s circle on the weekend, and I obviously can’t break the cock code, but I was surprised to learn something. Men rule. There’s a book called The Queens Code. Read it sis, and stop turning princes into frogs. If he’s skipping a weekend wave to wear shoes and chat with your boring city mates, he sounds like a keeper.

Have a question for KEENWA? byronbazaar.com/dearkeenwa

Festival Fun, JT _____________________________________

I took myself and a few friends along to the BBFF to see Bear Island last Saturday night which we were excited to see as we knew it was going to be a different kind of surf film/doco. After reading the blurb we thought why not, support the local film festival and have a great night out in town after. It was real, raw and enlighenting, took us to a place far away with the most adventureous 3 brothers brave enough to surf Norway’s isolated Bear Island and risk a different kind of predator, polar bears. Even the three short films before the main event were great viewing, some local and some international. From the applause at the end you could tell it was enjoyed by all in the theatre and left you wanting more. Thanks for the entertainment BBFF and the great selection of films on offer with something for everyone!

This week the influence of a Mars/Pluto conjunction still dominates the astrological makeup; it amplifies and intensifies any strong feeling and sensations that arise. Issues about control and self-control might have to be dealt with in a new, healing and transformative way. Collectively we have to work on issues concerning resources, economy and justice. The Cancer Moon opposes Mars and Pluto on Saturday and might trigger extreme moods, tension and irritability; nevertheless there is also opportunity for deep transformation! On the bright side we have Sun and Mercury dancing together in close union from Saturday onwards for about a week. This is the time to share your deep feelings and find balance with loved ones, while both planets are still in Libra. The Sun moves into Scorpio on Sunday and Mercury follows on Tuesday; exposing your feelings might not come easily now. For the bigger picture read your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. A Tarot card is drawn for each astrological sign.

g

Aries You might feel challenged by all sorts of situations this week; the warrior in you is strong and ready to defend your actions and convictions. The 7 of Wands supports self-assertion and honouring your point of view. Just be sensitive to other people’s complex issues too.

h

Taurus While other people might have extreme ups and downs this week, with the 10 of Disks you might just move through the week smoothly and without trouble. You are in the middle of building new long-term foundations that depend on trusting the tried and true, and your intuition works favorably for recognising profitable business opportunities.

i

Gemini The Princess of Disks represents the creative force of the goddess and heralds growth and change for the better. Being in touch with your feelings and following your inner voice bring you great strength and the power to give birth to the new you. This can manifest as a new lifestyle or a new creative project.

j

Cancer The 3 of Wands has a very stabilising influence and helps you to navigate this tumultuous week. Be very aware of your own moods and projections on Saturday, and step up to set an example for how to navigate difficult feelings in a state of integrity.

k

Leo The Princess of Cups drawn asks you to deeply connect with your heart and navigate the challenges of the week from this place. Some answers and truths are simpler than you think and the key to it all is to communicate your feelings, desires and concerns in an open and honest way. As soon as your ego gets involved you are off track!

l

Virgo Something has to give way this week and you might be aware that you are ending a major phase or aspect of your life. The Death Tarot card speaks of profound change, transformation and renewal. This is your chance to let go of old, outlived and outdated patterns and behaviour. What you resist persists!

a

Libra The Adjustment card is the quintessential Libra card in the deck. You might play an important role over the weekend helping to determine right action concerning family members, friends, or a partner. Your commitment to justice and your ethical principles shine a bright light into dark and hidden issues and help to transform them.

b

Scorpio The 6 of Cups promises a revitalising and deeply nurturing week. You might experience other people’s goodwill, or you might be acting kindly and charitably towards other people in need. You may find a great balance between giving and receiving, taking care and being taken care of. This experience can bring great emotional healing and wellbeing.

c

Sagittarius The Tower card has the function of a ‘wake-up call’. It heralds a time of upheaval and sudden change; you might experience it as an out of control situation or as a roadblock on your path, and you might deeply resent the fact that it is happening. Nevertheless the chaos or crisis that comes with it is necessary to motivate you to eliminate old outgrown structures in your life and get ready for the new you.

d

Capricorn Just like last week the 6 of Disks is drawn again! This points out that you are in the middle of a deep transformational process regarding your ambitions, work and career opportunities. The Mars/Pluto conjunction in your sign might give you insight into claiming and owning your inherent power. A newly found self-worth builds the foundation of the success that is coming.

e

Aquarius The Prince of Cups symbolises the lover within; his longing is to deeply express and live his passion. Your cool, rational mind needs to get into alignment with the heat of your heart. As you find ways to appreciate yourself more unconditionally, romance or a new, exciting creative project is coming into focus...

f

Pisces The Strength Tarot card invites you to throw all caution to the wind and give yourself permission to whole-heartedly be you. Right now you have the courage to go for what you truly want and express that to the fullest. Your energy is high, you believe in yourself and you can move mountains if you choose to.

Green Thumb Gun For Hire Business Philosophy: Urban Food Garden endeavours to change the world one garden at a time by providing a edible garden service. They will create (and help you maintain) a customised edible, organic garden of any size and in any location be it a home, business, school or even a high-rise. Owner of the Byron Bay outpost of Urban Food Garden, Jennifer, got into the business of edible gardening services because she wants to make it easy for people to grow their own food, regardless of whether they know a thing about gardening. Jennifer explains, “our vision is based on organic, toxin-free food as well as helping people understand food security and the importance of growing your own food as the population grows.” Point Of Difference: The organic food movement is well established in Byron Bay, but what makes Urban Food Garden unique is their aim to help people create their own organic gardens- and ensure that they are both sustainable and productive. While Jennifer and her team will happily teach you how to maintain your garden yourself, they’re also there to lend a hand if things get overwhelming. Jennifer says, “many do-it-yourself gardening efforts flounder after a while due to lack of knowhow or time. We’ll be there to help if you’re stuck or short on time.” Success Story: In addition to helping grown-up gardeners

feed themselves, Jennifer and her team are helping pint sized gardeners join the sustainable food revolution. Urban Food Garden’s very first installation in the Northern Rivers was at Lismore Parish Preschool. According to Jennifer, the garden is flourishing and the children use the garden every day. Jennifer explains, “the children are gaining life skills by growing and preparing their own food- as well as learning about sustainability.”

THIS WEEK’S MANTRA / GO WITHIN, GET WHAT

YOU NEED

If you’re feeling depleted, down in the dumps, uninspired, unsupported, unloved, unsure, not-enough, or just a little lessthan...GO TO THE SOURCE. Go within to get what you need. Nothing and no one outside of you can make you happier, more inspired, more loved, more beautiful, more complete than you are right now. No diet or relationship or credential or job or “ideal-weight” or piece of clothing will complete you. That’s ALL on you. EVERYTHING you need, want, are waiting for, is already within you. All of the the love, all of the bliss, all of the confidence you are wandering through your life looking for is already within you, waiting to be unearthed, shaken loose and brought to light. All of the answers you are looking for in your life are already within you. Every single one. You are your own guru. You already know. The answers are buried within you like diamonds in a coal mine. They may be shrouded by self-doubt and second-guessing, but they are there, waiting for you to open your eyes and see them. It’s ALL there. You just need to mine your inner resources. The most effective way to go within and get what you need? MEDITATION. In meditation we are privy to witnessing a whole ‘nother world. We dive deep and awaken to the awe, intelligence, wisdom, divinity, beauty, majesty that already resides within us. We detach from the material, thinking world, from the barrage of information and we tune into our instincts + intuition. Meditation gifts us with three things: inner alignment, inner resourcing + inner alchemy. The ability to be clear about what is true, real and in integrity- aligned with our higher self. The ability to source everything we need from within- to fill up our own cup. And the ability to alchemise the darkness within us into light. It may sound like a miracle. And it it is. Don’t believe us? Try it for yourself. Commit to a daily meditation for 7 days and watch what happens.

>> A quick chat with a Byron local (or a local at heart)>> CRAIG A. GASCOIGNE Job Title: Sand Artist Instagram: @craigas.art Place of Birth: The banks of the Hunter River

How many years have you been creating artwork on the beaches of Byron Bay? I started in 1997 and I drew for 44 days in a row. What’s your favourite breakfast spot in Byron Bay? There are lots of excellent places to eat in Byron, with a large array of fine foods. The best place to eat breaky in Byron? Main Beach Park watching the sunrise. Why did you start creating artwork on the beach? I started because I noticed that the beach looked so beautiful and flat in the morning but by the afternoon, it looked all messy from the foot prints, so I started to draw on the beach to make Byron more beautiful. I love Byron and the response I got from so many people inspired me. I also noticed that I was fairly good at it, so I thought maybe it’s what I’m meant to do. The best advice you ever received? Love yourself, happiness is your choice, you can’t expect respect, you have to earn it, love is forever, but lust is more fun. Treat other people they way you would want them to treat you. How do you find inspiration? I find my inspiration in the first breath of the day, in the sunrise, the light shinning through rain, the beauty of the moon and the wonder of the stars. A kookaburra laughing the day in, and then laughing it out again. But mostly I am inspired by so many beautiful people, from so many different walks of life who just want to tell me how much they love what I do. To see how the drawings seem to make them so happy is so fulfilling for me. What should everyone try at least once in his or her life? Love themselves, let go of their inhibitions and set themselves free. Go for a road trip around OZ in a van. What’s on your bucket list? To infect the world with love. To live completly in the single moment. And to go snorkelling on the Barrier Reef before its all gone. Best travel tip? Always carry a towel.
