Sunken Forest: Peebles Island State Park Activity Center Located at the convergence point of a series of waterways and activity trails, Peebles Island State Park hosts a diverse set of users and events. To accommodate a wide range of demographics, the activity center utilizes a system composed of a central spine and a bounding container to structure the programs within. The main circulation spine is extended, and winds back and forth to extend the experience of each user, promoting interaction between individuals, programs, and views of the surrounding nature. Primary programs connect directly to the central path while secondary elements can be accessed through enfilades and other routes creating a balance of public and private spaces based on ones proximity to the spine. The pockets created through this process of offsetting buildings house a variety of informal and programmed outdoor areas that can be enjoyed by the center’s visitors.

When entering the activity center complex, visitors experience a gradual decline down into the container and beneath the lush tree canopy above. As they progress through the various amenities and spaces towards the water’s edge, they can partake in programs with increasing activity levels. The gradual progression helps maintain the serenity of the pre-existing park in addition to limiting any disruption of existing wildlife systems.

Balancing out the act of carving down into the complex’s bounding container, pre-existing natural elements found on the site persist in order to bridge the past context with its future trajectory. The tree types match those found around the park and grow to align with the existing tree canopy line, helping to shape and conceal a unique environment below. In addition, green roofs are installed to maintain growth at the same elevation as the original ground level. These roofs are slanted in accordance with the natural topography of the site continuing the curve and rise of the ground as if it was never altered.

Human-Landscape Dialogue: Landform Analysis And System-ground Construct Using the atoll formation process as a precedent, the following exercises explored the interactions catalyzed by human and landscape evolution. Due to the jarring nature of an atolls transformation, human interaction generally arrives after the island formation has concluded.

However, by inserting interaction into this process earlier, a push and pull dialogue is created altering how the built environment works in tandem with the natural landscape.

The diagrams and three exploratory models seek to view this dialogue through a series of different perspectives: the atoll’s transformation in isolation, a layering and fortification of both systems, and a dominant human construct explored through a variety of mediums and formal strategies.

Morphing Landscape: Atoll Amplified Morphosis When viewing the transformation and evolution of an atoll over time, the severity and weight of each action and segment is often subdued due to its gradual nature. However, by shifting portions slightly, the contrast between stages becomes significantly more apparent. Despite these drastic environmental shifts, pockets of life evolve and decay as the landform changes, ultimately highlighting the constantly shifting nature of the island and its relationship to its inhabitants.

To capture the varying materials and textures showcased during the atoll’s transformation process, this model used an amalgamation of scrap woods of different grains and types. Once bound and sanded into a smooth, undulating form, the piece was then cut into a grid, rotating and shifting individual portions to create the rough surface finish.

Layers of Failure: Built Environment Integration with Landscape While human development typically occurs after the atoll’s transformation process has concluded, by inserting the built environment into the process earlier, both the natural and built landscape combine to help fortify the land itself. Through a process of repeated and intended failure, layers are created which help enhance and protect the island and its future inhabitants.

This model seeks to highlight the aforementioned processes theorized in a raw form. Sand and gravel are combined with epoxy to create a compound that hardens. Rocks, plastic and other recycled debris is then scattered to create layers, interspersed with the sand mixture. These elements work together to bind and create the final object, which stands without the need for a base or container.

Breaking Point: Anthropogenic Destruction of the Natural Environment Contrasting the previous exploration, this model seeks to highlight the fragile nature of the landscape which is often dominated and warped due to human intervention. The juxtaposition between the heavy steel egg-crate and the thin, malleable fabric echoes the historic pattern of human manipulation of the natural environment for personal gain. This suspended state of tearing and stretching poses the possibility of a natural breaking point.

After first abstracting iterations from previous digital analyses of the atoll transformation process, a series of sections were plasma-cut out of plates of reused steel. A thin layer of fabric was stretched and warped across the bottom of the steel towers and coated in epoxy to hold its shape. Sand and rock was then integrated on top of the fabric to mask its initial qualities and provide a contrasting texture.

Plant Directed Living: Syracuse Youth Hostel and Urban Farm While the original brief merely requested the design of a youth hostel in downtown Syracuse, NY, my initial research revealed that the population residing near the site in downtown not only earn below the average household median income but also heavily relies on food stamps.

Knowing this, I amended my approach by focusing on providing the surrounding community with access to fresh produce and use overlapping spaces to create an immersive narrative of the food production process. This experience would be shared by various communities, hostel residence and workers to ultimately break down pre-existing divisions between demographic groups.

I used overlap in various ways in order for the unique experiences to feel connected under one enclosure. My design approach prioritized the needs of the plants before those of the hostel programming thus creating a unique experience for the residents and visitors while maximizing the functionality of the food growing process. Overall, the immersive environment shared by the hostel residents and the surrounding community help to bring people together, and promote community ownership with a tangible output.

The functions and actions within both human and plant programs are correlated based on similar shared activities and environments. For example, the bedrooms and seedling beds both require a more comfortable, serene, and controlled environment. The spaces are sequenced according to the plant growing process, starting with the seeds, going to germination and ending in fully grown and as a product...

Each of these spaces have a unique experience for the viewer, with the seedling area being more intimate and then gradually opening up to the very lively and public top floor. This connects the private space to the community and also allows people to unknowingly experience nature’s evolution.
