Thank you. Two simple words which carry so much meaning, and yet many of us forget to say. Life used to be full of thanks. We sent Thank You cards, we gave balloons with “Thank You” written in big shining letters, we reminded each other to stop and smell the roses, which I always took to mean, stop and say thank you to God for all the gifts he gives us each day. Maybe it is just me, but sometimes I think fewer people are as thankful for the grace which fills our days and the people who make a difference in our lives, whether we know it or not. Having been in education and administration for many years I realize how communications have changed. Rather than the notes of thanks I used to receive, now there are many more emails of expectations. So as we end one school year and begin another, let me start by saying… Thank You. Thank you to all the priests who have come to so many events and shown their enthusiastic support of Bishop Verot. Watching twelve priests share in our Baccalaureate Mass was one of the most humbling experiences of my tenure in this school. The grace and dignity which they display when they are on campus or attending events shows they are truly invested in what we are working toward. It is powerful to watch them join us out of respect not requirement. I am honored by their continued presence, and very thankful. Thank you to the staff and faculty who work tirelessly with the only goal of providing each and every child the best opportunity for success each day. I am so proud to be surrounded by a group of exceptional professionals who love their jobs almost as much as they love their students. I have watched you put the needs of this school above your own personal needs and am inspired by the dedication you model for every child who walks on our campus. Thank you to the parents and guardians who recognize how hard it is for us to meet the individual needs of every child, but see in us the unrestrained effort to do just that. The parents who send emails of appreciation and gratitude and the families who openly support all we are trying to achieve. Thank you to those who are our guardians against the negativity and our cheerleaders in every community. We see what you do and we are proud to have you on our team. Thank you to those who give back to this wonderful school. You see in Bishop Verot an investment for the future and you are not afraid to share your time and talent, and quite often your treasures as well, with the only return being the assistance to students you may never have the privilege to meet. You volunteer at events, you attend our fundraisers, and some of you quietly call me and give with no expectation of recognition. And of course…thank you to every student who graces our halls with their smiles and their enthusiasm. Your dedication to your school is palpable and your desire to succeed beyond the expectations of us all is the force which drives us to keep improving this school. Thank you for holding on to your faith and sharing it with others. Thank you for your questions and your skepticisms which inspire us to be ready for every challenge you give us. And thank you for wearing your BV gear with pride and conviction. You are our future and we are proud to watch you go into the world and shine.

Bishop Verot 2016 Career Day

C

areer Day offers our students the opportunity to learn more about the professions of interest to them. Our presenters explain their careers and the paths they took to get to where they are today. The small group discussion gives our students a better understanding of the work force and the education and work experience necessary to reach their career goals. This year, thirty professionals were on campus to share their experiences with students. Some

of the careers represented were Software Engineering, Journalism, Politics, Restaurant Management, Philanthropy, Orthopedics, and Veterinary Medicine. Several of this year’s presenters were alumni, sharing their career paths to become Pharmacists, Philanthropists, Photographers, Dentists and many other professions. Anyone interested in presenting at next year’s event, please email Mrs. Breen at Deanna.Breen@ bvhs.org.

Softball Wins State!

By Jessica Cole

The 2016 Bishop Verot Softball team was comprised of 18 fiercely competitive, talented athletes. They put together some impressive wins this year, but like every season, they experienced the typical ups and downs. It was in a moment of adversity, however, the players made a commitment to each other. They wanted to be State Champions. The commitment led to a district and regional post-season run where the Lady Vikings outscored their opponents 29-1. It wouldn’t be the first trip the Vikings made to the State Final Four, but this time was different. It felt like destiny. All of the appearances before, where the Bishop Verot Softball teams fell short were about to be redeemed. Every player who has ever worn black and gold in the State Tournament knew

12

BLACK & GOLD | SUMMER 2016

they could do it, even before their time had come. After the last semi-final loss in 2013, senior Morgan Cole told the interviewer, “I will never be back, but you can bet Bishop Verot will be.” And were they ever. In the semi-final game of the State Final Four, Bishop Verot disposed of Trinity Christian with a shut-out 8-0 victory behind pitcher Erin Kyle. Kyle gave up one hit against Trinity and went 4-4 at the plate. The Viking offense, led by Kyle, Jessy McLean, and Tayli Filla was relentless, the defense was flawless. Trinity Christian was stunned. In the State Final, the Vikings faced Montverde Academy. While Montverde Academy had never won a softball state title, they were a bastion of athletic talent. Nevertheless, the Vikings plated four quick runs in the first inning. BISHOP VEROT ALUMNI MAGAZINE

Montverde also edged four across and the teams entered the fourth inning tied up at 4 runs. By the fifth inning, they were tied at 5. Erin Kyle came in to relieve starting pitcher Nicole Fortner-Rodriguez in the top of the sixth inning. Kyle forced a pop out, struck one out and gave up one hit. Jennie Boisvert was able to end the inning by throwing out the lone base runner on an attempted steal. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lady Vikings upped the ante. Sammie Massaro stepped up to the plate and blasted a homerun over the left field fence. The bench cleared as the Lady Vikings rushed to celebrate at the plate. The tie was broken and Bishop Verot wasn’t done yet. The next batter, Nicole Fortner-Rodriguez, ripped her second stand-up double of the game. Gillian

Takais batted her in, stretching to third with a headfirst dive. Takais was tagged out but her effort put the Vikings up by 2 runs heading into the seventh inning. At the top of the seventh, the Lady

the double play, but it wasn’t in time. Two outs. The facial expressions of the infield players remained unchanged. They were one out away from bringing home the first title to Bishop Verot, but

if the thought was on their minds, no one could tell. It was all business on the field, but in the dug-out, Coach Pablo Plaza was blinking back tears, rocking back and forth. He knew destiny was about to be played out in Historic Dodgertown. The fourth batter hit to the shortstop. Nicole Fortner-Rodriguez scooped the grounder and made the throw to Jessy McLean at first base. And it’s a game! We have won the title! The stands erupted, the student section went wild and the dugout emptied. Utter jubilation and an overwhelming sense of pride filled the stadium. This was the first State Title for Bishop Verot, the first State Title for Lee County. They did it. They went the distance.

Vikings were three outs away from being crowned Champion. Erin Kyle stepped into the circle. Jennie Boisvert took her stance behind the plate. The lead-off batter hit a single. Suddenly, Montverde had a runner on first. Kyle struck out the next batter. The third batter of the inning hit the ball to Tayli Filla at third base. She made a quick throw to second on the fielder’s choice. Gillian Takais in turn tried for Dr. Denison placed the Championship medal around each of their necks as the sun began to sink and the sky turned appropriately gold. The students locked arms and sang with the team, our Alma Mater, the last line ringing out into the Vero Beach sunset. “Non Excidet! WE WILL NOT FAIL!” BV

A letter from the Director of Development My Fellow Vikings, Here we are again at the close of another school year. The list of student accomplishments is too long to list. From the classroom, extracurricular activities, and athletic competitions, our Vikings are reaching and exceeding all expectations. We are proud of our rich traditions continuing to be carried forward with each year. As regular readers of the B&G you have a front row seat to Verot. The opportunities our present day Vikings have are due to the generosity of previous Vikings and Viking supporters. Each year we build upon our legacy. When we graduated the class of 2016, we also graduated the last stack of text books from Bishop Verot. Bishop Verot is a 1:1 iPad school. This four year journey has positioned Bishop Verot to continue being the leader in educational excellence and technology innovation for Lee County and beyond. These achievements are possible because of the generosity of time, talent, and treasure of not only our donors but our faculty and staff, alumni, and current families. Those of us having attended Catholic schools understand the importance of having this opportunity for future generations. In this issue of the B&G you will see the financial year in review. Our Annual Fund, special events, and fundraisers continue to succeed in helping move Bishop Verot forward. Thank you to all of our supporters for your generosity. If you haven’t already, please consider a gift to Bishop Verot Catholic High School today. Please continue to keep the Bishop Verot community in your prayers. Non Excidet,

Gina Lombardo Director of Development

...A Night To Remember

T

he 4th Annual Gala and Auction was held on Saturday, April 9th on the Bishop Verot campus. The transformation of the Nevins Gymnasium to the Hollywood Oscars was no easy undertaking. As our guests walked up the star lined walkway honoring teachers and staff, stopped for a photo on the red carpet, and made their way in to the ballroom, the mood was set. The twinkling lights and giant Hollywood letters all lit up made it easy to feel a part of the glamour of the stars. The evening included a Silent and Live Auction, dinner and dancing, and the induction of the 2016 Alumnus of the Year, Mr. David Malt. Through the generosity of our attendees, we were successful in raising much needed funds for Bishop Verot. We are especially grateful to our Chairpersons, Mrs. Beverly Fewster and Mrs. Robin Collier, for their vision and organization of the event. The decorating committee did a fabulous job bringing the theme to life, with special recognition going to Mrs. Angela Clark and Mrs. Lisa Quattrone. This phenomenal team is already working on next year’s event to be held on Saturday, March 25, 2017. Thank you also to the many people lending a needed hand throughout the set-up and during the evening, contributing to the overall success of this spectacular event. Anyone interested in sponsoring or helping the 2017 Gala, please email Gala2017@bvhs.org.

At the beautiful Saratoga Springs Performance Hall, the choir performed a set from their spring concert, which varied from a cappella songs to classic choral pieces.
