As we passed through the season of Lent and were blessed by the renewal of Easter, many of us found ourselves searching for a way to leave behind the noise and chaos of our busy lives, in a quiet pursuit of a deepened faith. We gave up things we felt were invaluable and tried to find a greater appreciation for all God has given us. What many find in times of such reflection and contemplation is the truer sense of how God has a plan for us all, and the realization He is an active participant in our daily lives.

While sitting in an early morning prayer service with the faculty of Bishop Verot, I looked around and was suddenly struck by the power of His presence in the empty spaces between us. I started to gain a better understanding of how life may be hard at times, but those are just single steps in the long and wondrous path He has chosen for each of us. What we may first see as frustration over small things becomes the change we needed to get where we belong.

The word coincidence is used as an easy explanation for things we did not expect.

When presented with situations we did not foresee, many will simply shrug and consider themselves lucky, or just as often, unlucky. What people who have a deep and abiding love of God have learned, is we are exactly where He wants us to be in every moment. He provides us with options to forge our own path, but when we miss a turn or get distracted and veer off course, rather than blaming or criticizing, we should see His hand rerouting us on our journey. He knows where we should be, even when we do not. When we miss a turn while driving, maybe it is Him who distracted us for a brief second to avoid an accident.

For those with faith, all things are possible. This has been proven true through the saints who have gone before us and the daily miracles we often do not even notice. My own personal faith has carried me through dark times, and cheered me through great victories.

To be able to spend my days surrounded by a faculty with the highest level of integrity, students who strive for excellence both in their academics and in their personal values, and families who see all the hard work being done for the sake of their child, has been a gift from God. He put me on this path and because of my faith in Jesus, my personal travels have brought me back to the welcoming environment of the Verot family.

As you pass through your days of silence or chaos, of fear or joy, of hardship or abundance, I challenge each of you to step back from your inner focus and open your eyes to the beauty that abounds. Not only in the visible spectrum, but also in the deeper levels of faith. Give thanks for the times your path has been crossed by an unexpected person who became your closest friend, or for the unexplained tap on your shoulder when you were alone in the car, which woke you to the danger ahead. Instead of getting frustrated by the nuances, look for the fortune and opportunity available to you. Rather than listing ways we have been victimized, look for the plethora of chances we have been given to be victors. The good and the bad are all part of the mystery of life which only He truly understands. And as you follow your own path on your journey toward your next destination, I wish you peace, joy, and the grace of God in every step you take.

My Fellow Vikings, The quote from President Kennedy’s Inaugural Address resonates with my thoughts for this letter. I would change the quote to read “and so, my fellow Vikings: ask not what Bishop Verot can do for you-ask what you can do for Bishop Verot.”

Bishop Verot Catholic High School is poised to take on the next 50 years.

Just in the last few years, we have experienced a sample of what the future holds for our school and our future Vikings. Change has come to Bishop Verot, and we have embraced it and made it our own.

Bishop Verot Catholic High School is a leader in educating the hearts and minds of our students. We are a leader in educational excellence. We are a leader in technology innovation. From the Aquaponics project, Ichthus, to our Model United Nations Team competing in our nation’s capital, and our STEM Team winning competitions at all levels, we are excelling and providing our students an educational experience beyond compare.

So I ask you, my fellow Vikings, what can you do for Bishop Verot? The first priority is to re-engage, update your information, and stop by and visit our school. I guarantee you will be amazed and pleased. The second priority is to ask yourself, do I want future generations to have the same benefit of the excellent Catholic education as I had? If the answer is yes, then we need you to take a leadership role and help Bishop Verot. In the coming weeks and months we will be asking you to support our future. Marching through the Storm

O

n January 21, 2016, nine students from Bishop Verot’s Catholics in Action club, Director of Campus Ministry, Miss Olivia Macke, and Verot Chaplain, Fr. Murchadh O'Madagain trekked prayerfully to Washington D.C. While preparing for the trip, we were all very anxious, constantly checking the weather for any snowy days, when we realized there would be a huge snow storm hitting us the day of the March. While very excited, we also became quickly nervous we might not “March for Life”. At the time, we didn't know the severity of the storm, and questioned whether to still make the trip.

We began hoping against hope our trip would not be canceled, as we caught our flight to Washington D.C. Quickly pulling out our phones, we searched the March for Life website. Scrolling through their webpage, we read in big letters, “MARCH WILL NOT BE CANCELED DUE TO ANY WEATHER CONDITIONS”.

Instantly, a sigh of relief enveloped us.

Arriving in Washington D.C., the group jumped with joy and excitement. God had answered our prayers, we had arrived safely, and the march would continue.

Our group joined the Diocese of Venice and Bishop Dewane for the grand Mass held at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception,

The next day, we anxiously woke to little flurries in the air. With a snow storm looming, we were oblivious to the fact six feet of snow would hit us. We soon discovered Blizzard Jonas would be plummeting us in the middle of the march. We proceeded to the opening Mass with all the traveling pilgrims from Florida, and with Bishop Frank Dewane presiding. This Mass helped all of us keep

hope and love in our hearts throughout the busy, marching day. We finally made it to the big pilgrimage down the National Mall, gathering with tens of thousands of other young marchers.

Before marching, we picked up huge signs with quotes supporting the pro-life movement, and preparing for the rally.

At the rally, marchers gathered to listen to speakers from congress, doctors, and those who have experienced abortions.

All the speeches were comforting, uplifting, and very moving, touching deep down to the soul. The intensity of emotion in the air became almost indescribable, shared by all who were there. We then began our three mile march in the start of a blizzard. The level of bitter coldness was only outmatched by the sweetness of positive warm energy within the marchers. We had come together for one purpose, to protect the innocent ones without a voice. And with a shared mission, we completed our march, and continued to radiate with faith and love for all who don't have a chance on earth. We then raced back to our hotel with provisions, only to learn our flights the next day would be cancelled. We wouldn't make it home for another two days.

With our mission being unexpectedly prolonged, we spent our additional two days soaking in the atmosphere of the winter ambiance. With Father O’Madagain, the group toured by foot, the shutdown capital and snow covered Georgetown, with Mass celebrated every day. We also made life long friends with a small group from Naples, known as Action for Life Florida.

The whole experience overfilled us with an abundance of joy, encouraging excitement for us to “March for Life” in 2017. As Catholics in Action, we are VIKINGS FOR LIFE! BV

Vikings take this statement very seriously. It is chanted at sporting events, hanging on the campus walls, spoken at graduation, even printed on our t-shirts. For countless Vikings, long after they have moved beyond their high school years, the phrase still rings true. And this year’s Alumni of the Year is no exception. Mr. David Malt, ’75, must bleed black and gold.

It has been 41 years since he walked the halls as a student, yet his love for Bishop Verot is clearly evident as he continues to share his time, talent, and treasure with future generations of Vikings. David has given of his time as a member of the

Bishop Verot School Board. He has shared his talent as he spearheaded the recent entryway project. He has shared his treasure as he donates his service for the betterment of Bishop Verot Catholic High School.

David, and his wife, Lisa, made the commitment to send their two sons, Chase ‘11 and Connor ’15, to Bishop Verot, encouraging a second generation of Vikings, bleeding black and gold. This spirit of giving back, of continuing to make a difference long after their time here, is exemplified by our Alumni of the Year. We are most grateful to David Malt, and the entire Malt family, for their continued support of Bishop Verot. The generosity shown by this family, and many others, is what makes Bishop Verot great.

Introducing BV Project Ichthus...

An Aquaponics project

"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." Stated by Benjamin Franklin, this

citation serves to unlock the door to the benefits of project-based-learning. While the majority of facts taken in through years of studies gradually fade from students' memories, those experiences truly captivating their attention stay rooted in their minds for the rest of their lives. Even a small opportunity could result in an extensive impact for an impressionable student.

A

t Bishop Verot High School, this school-wide, hands-on-learning opportunity takes the form of an aquaponics system. Combining the benefits of aquaculture and hydroponics, this beneficial farm system utilizes fish waste to grow crops. Although an aquaponics system can differ depending on the size, complexity, and materials of each potential system, the general theme remains the same. Bacteria break down fish by-products into nutrients, which, along with water, flow via tubing to plant growing systems. The system at Verot is a decoupled system. Though

the systems are hydraulically connected, the fish water is delivered to the plants, but it does not return to the fish. Target based watering replaces traditional sprinkling systems, and natural rather than chemical fertilizer nourishes plant growth. As Mrs. Stacey Elmeer, Bishop Verot's Curriculum Coordinator, put it, "The way we once gardened is out of style. We can no longer afford the resources, especially water. One of the major challenges for future generations will be providing food for a larger population with fewer natural resources.

We need to acquaint our students with tomorrow's issues - today."

When Elmeer received the notice she had been selected as the new curriculum coordinator last summer, she immediately began to research something new and different to enrich the curriculum in the upcoming school year. "I saw... [a video on] a solar powered greenhouse", remembered Elmeer. When she brought the agricultural idea to STEM curriculum coordinator Mr. Kurt Prey, he suggested an Aquaponics garden. Mr. Prey chose a decoupled system, allowing the school the option to treat the fish and plant systems separately.

Involving the entire school, the BISHOP VEROT ALUMNI MAGAZINE

aquaponic project's maintenance and improvement serves as a living classroom for students. This school year, each student must complete a project in all of his or her classes regarding our aquaponics system. From the English classes writing monetary grants to pay for the equipment to the art classes

designing the logo for the project, each student contributes his or her own talents for the betterment of the project.

Responding to the Pope's encyclical to "care for creation", Bishop Verot will "serve the fish and vegetables we grow in the garden to those in the community who are less fortunate."

Though tilapia will be the staple of the meal, a variety of lettuce, spinach, kale, arugula, colorful bell peppers, tomatoes, radishes, and peas will ideally also make an appearance on the menu. This idea stemmed from the Project Ichthus movement, well-known for the image of a fish used to represent Christianity.

Similar to the miracle in which Jesus multiplied two small fish so there was eventually enough to feed 5,000 people, the aquaponics system provides an

adequate growth and breeding ground for fish which, along with the connected growth of produce, feed those who need it the most. Although the majority of fish currently housed in our aquaponics tanks will not be large enough by our first meal, Selovita, the company providing discounted materials for our project, will also supply additional fullgrown fish at a discount for the cause.

Mr. Prey and Mrs. Elmeer hope the aquaponics project will provide students with a head start in terms of learning to solve real world problems such as a potential water and food shortage for upcoming population. For those not currently interested in science-related subjects, the two anticipate the system will cause some students to develop a passion for scientific endeavors.

Ideally, students will learn to use fewer resources and act more consciously in regards to their own privileges. Elmeer

predicts students will "become more global, not just in our technology, but in our empathy."

Officially running since last November, the aquaponics system possesses much learning and opportunity for present and future Bishop Verot students. Projected to operate for at least five years, the system will evolve as classes look into the possibility of using computer apps and other technology to potentially automate the system and reduce costs. "We would like...to replace the electricity with solar [power]," in BISHOP VEROT ALUMNI MAGAZINE

order to increase the environmental friendliness of the system.

A project which will fully encompass all aspects of the Bishop Verot community, Project Icthus and its founders welcome ideas to aid in the project's development. However, the most fundamental method for contribution remains the collection of funds. Even a little assistance on this project could help change a student's learning experience. Bishop Verot’s Model United Nations Club

T

his past February, twenty-two students from Model UN, accompanied by their moderators, Mrs. Lynn Knox and Mr. Jason Scott, traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in the North American Invitational Model United Nations Conference, sponsored by Georgetown University.

The North American Invitational Model United Nations (NAIMUN) Conference is one of the oldest UN simulations for high school students in the world. Since 1963, the conference has been a forum where young students come from around the world. Three thousand

BLACK & GOLD | SPRING 2016

high school students convene for four days to explore various problems of the world and seek solutions through discussion, negotiation, and debate.

Students simulate roles as delegates to the United Nations from a particular nation and serve as representatives of their country’s policies. Students at NAIMUN are pushed to heighten their understanding of the international system through 39 mini-simulations, ranging from standard committees like the UN General Assembly and the Security Council to crisis simulations of various regional organizations, national cabinets, corporate boards, and political organizations.

The conference is organized by the Georgetown International Relations Association, Inc. (GIRA), a non-profit organization seeking to design meaningful exchanges to inspire, educate, and empower the next generation of leaders in government, business, and international affairs.

NAIMUN is staffed and managed by over 200 undergraduate students from Georgetown University, all of whom have keen interest and substantial understanding of international relations.

While in Washington, D.C., Verot students were given the opportunity to experience the rich history found in our nation’s capitol. Several students toured the American History Museum, guided

by Bishop Verot alum Mr. Timothy Nolan, ’97, the museum’s Program Manager. The private tour with a fellow Viking was an awesome experience for our students.

“We heard some great speakers as well as learned a lot at the NAIMUN Conference. Before the conference, we toured the National Mall and the Museum of American History, where Mr. Nolan’s brother gave us a tour of the entire museum.”

Being in a powerful city with nearly 700,000 people and many note-worthy figures, similarly, sitting in a committee with around 300 delegates, I realized in order to be heard, you have to separate yourself from the crowd. Model UN is great because it teaches you to overcome the most precarious challenges as they arise in the most diplomatic and refined ways possible.”

part of our Catholic Schools Week celebration, students cast their votes for the teacher they feel best exemplifies the qualities of Christ the Teacher.

Students are invited to nominate a teacher, which includes offering examples of how the teacher’s faith in God is evident, how they make the Verot community stronger, closer, and more unified, and how they demonstrate the servant mentality, sacrificing time and talent for the good of others. Given the criteria, it is no wonder Coach Gill’s name was the one announced as winner.

I recently sat down with Coach Gill as he reflected on this recognition. As he shared his inspiration, with strong emotions on his face, the significance of this award, as well as his love of Verot, was evident. His deep admiration for the teachers and coaches who touched his life, shaping him into the teacher he is today, is certainly shared by many of his own students. The rich history of 44 years as a teacher here, he credits to the keen interest his own teachers showed in him as a student and alumni, and his desire to do the same.

Coach Gill has positively influenced countless Vikings, both in the woodshop and on the football field. He told me, “I think the students respect me because they know I will help them with whatever they need.” A student shared, “Coach Gill does everything, whatever you need him to do, he will do.”

David Nelson is in his 5th year as Head Coach for the Bishop Verot baseball program.

Before landing his role as head coach, Nelson served as assistant coach under Tom LoSauro from 2007-2011 and as head coach at Lehigh Senior High during the 2006 season. Nelson has his Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin and was a member of the school’s Division III baseball program. Nelson is in his 5th year teaching at Bishop Verot and serves as the Dean of Students. David, and his wife Monica ’98, have a six year old son, Braydon, and one year old daughter, Grayce.

Coach Plaza enters his 2nd year as Head Coach, after serving several years as assistant coach. During his tenure as assistant coach, Coach Plaza aided the Lady Vikings in making two FHSAA Final Four appearances. Coach Plaza came to Verot with extensive experience in baseball and softball, both as a player and a coach, along with an impressive run in travel ball as head coach of The Chaos, an elite travel team. Coach Plaza is also the father to Verot alum, Amber Plaza ’13, currently playing softball for Florida Gulf Coast University.

Coach Gary Neese is currently in his 3rd year as head coach of the Boys Varsity Lacrosse team. Coach Neese played at the college level, as a member of the University of Delaware’s Division I team. Neese continued his lacrosse career at State University of New York (SUNY) Brockport, and in his junior season, was 3rd in scoring in Division III. Following college, Neese took an assistant coaching position at the University of Albany. The following year, Neese pursued a master’s degree in Exercise Physiology at Ithaca College, where he served as graduate assistant coach.

This season, Coach Neese hopes to lead the Vikings to their 3rd district title under his leadership.

John has an extensive coaching background. Prior to moving to Ft. Myers, John taught in Catholic schools in Pennsylvania and Tennessee, where he coached lacrosse and football. He was also a lacrosse player himself, playing for his high school team and a traveling club team. John, and his wife Jessica, have two sons, Jack and Joey.

Mark Latell is beginning his 5th year as the Varsity Boys Tennis coach. Mark is a 1983 Verot alumni with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Georgia Tech. Mark moved back to his hometown of Ft. Myers six years ago and is teaching math at Verot. Mark and his wife Deanna, also a Verot graduate, have five children, Danielle, Anna, David, Matthew, and Andrew.

Mary Gibson is in her 10th season as the Varsity Girls Tennis coach.

During the past ten years, the Vikings have won seven district and two regional titles. The team repeated as Regional Champions, allowing for back-to-back State appearances in 2009 and 2010. Gibson has been named News-Press Coach of the Year two times during her tenure.

In 2012, she was asked by the Florida High School Tennis Coaches Association to coach the Inaugural State of Florida High School All-Star team for Region 7. Gibson teamed with Naples High coach Tony Kamens and brought the first All-Star title to our area. Mary has been married to husband, Gil, for 26 years and has three sons, all are Vikings – Zakary ’09, Gunnar ’12, and Cooper ’16.

Coach Jordan ‘10 is very excited to return for another great season with the Track and Field team. Coach Jordan begins his first year as head coach, having served the past two years as an assistant coach. This will be Coach Jordan’s third consecutive season coaching at Verot, with Cross-Country and Freshman Basketball in the fall and winter, respectively. He hopes to build upon the success of last year, and also attract even more of Verot’s incredible athletes to join the program. So far, the track team has almost doubled in size, to nearly 60 runners for 2016!

STEM Team Competes at the DIY Battle of the Bands

The Bishop Verot STEM team had two teams participating in the DIY Battle of the Bands competition, performing with their creatively designed musical instruments. BV Gold, performing “Into the Jungle” with their drum made from a recycled propane tank, won 1st Place in the High School division. BV Vikings earned 2nd Place with their rendition of “Under the Sea” from the Little Mermaid.

Academic Team Congratulations to the Academic Team on their win over Moorehaven High School and FSW Collegiate High School at the A-Team Challenge, sponsored by the Foundation for Lee County Schools and NBC-2. The Academic Team, led by Mrs. Lori Shriner, includes Alex Simon, Robert Voorhees, Junco Nelson, Tiffany Matyja, Ally Fraser, Julia Canzano, Haley Cerretani, and Brian Voorhees.

Rally in Tally

Verot Students Donate Jeans

In January, Bishop Verot students, along with other students from the Diocese of Venice, joined the thousands of Floridians for the Rally in Tally. The Rally was a show of support to Florida legislators to protect Florida’s Tax Credit Scholarship Program, which allows low income families to choose a private school education.

As part of our Catholic Schools Week celebration and in the spirit of charity, students were invited to participate in a special “wear a pair, donate a pair” jeans day. Students donated over 500 pairs of jeans for men, women, and children. The jeans were donated to St. Vincent de Paul and the Salvation Army.

Robbie Burns Day For 14 years, Mrs. Dakin’s British Literature and AP Language classes have been celebrating Robbie Burns Day. Robbie Burns was the national poet of Scotland.

Students prepare traditional Scottish foods, adorn Scottish clothing, recite a poem, and learn and perform a Scottish dance and song. This year, a student shared his talent on the bagpipes as part of the celebration.

Scholar’s Academy Speaker Series Cardiologist, Dr. Sergio Cossu, kicked off our Scholar’s Academy Speaker Series. He talked to students about how to pursue a career in the medical field, steps to begin setting yourself up for success to get in to a medical school, how the healthcare field is changing and which areas of medicine are expected to be in high demand in the future. Thank you to Dr. Cossu for sharing his time and talent with our Scholar’s Academy students.

Sports Medicine Club Visits FGCU The Sports Medicine Club, along with moderator and Bishop Verot Athletic Trainer Hans Smelker, spent an afternoon at Florida Gulf Coast University, touring their Athletic Training facilities. Students toured the laboratory and training area and observed an Athletic Training class in session.

Junco Nelson ’16 Named National Merit Scholarship Finalist Junco Nelson has been named a Finalist in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program, a distinction placing her in a group of 15,000 students representing less than 1 percent of the U.S. high school graduating seniors. Junco was chosen from a large group of Semifinalists, after submitting the National Merit Scholarship Application, which included essays and information about her extracurricular achievements, awards, and leadership positions, as well as SAT scores.

Physics Honors Catapult Project The Honors and AP Physics classes were presented with a challenge: Create a catapult to launch a softball 20 meters (Honors level) or 25 meters (AP). At first the students were anxious about the task, but as students shared their experiences and ideas in class, posting to a Padlet, or watching youtube videos, it became a friendly competition of sorts. Each group had three chances to reach a maximum distance. While launching, students recorded the launch, the total time in air, and maximum displacement. Using this information, students calculated the launch angle, launch velocity, and maximum height.

This acts as a review of the concepts of projectile motion while giving students the opportunity to actually create something using their knowledge from the classroom. Student designs varied. Some opted to create a trebuchet, others used music, and or paint to make their creations unique.

Rae graduated from Florida Gulf Coast University in 2015 with a Masters Degree in Business Administration.

She has started a new business venture, 71PIXELS, an IT and web design firm, based in Cape Coral.

Alexandria and Daniel Andrews ’09 were engaged on October 29, 2015. The couple began dating while students at Bishop Verot. They are planning a December wedding in Savannah, Georgia.

Bibi has spent the last four years at Florida State University and will graduate this spring with a degree in Exercise Science. She is a four year letterman as a varsity coed cheerleader and is captain of the squad as a senior. She will continue her education this fall at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry, where she also received a scholarship.

Nina Tejera ‘11 Nina graduated this past spring from Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL. While at SHC, she lettered two years in women’s soccer and achieved academic NAIA honors her Freshman year. She graduated with a BS degree in Nursing.

She currently is practicing nursing at The University of S. Alabama Medical Center in the Surgical Trauma ICU. She plans to pursue a Masters degree as a certified registered nurse anesthetist.

Chris Johnson Miami Marlins baseball In January, Johnson signed a contract with the Miami Marlins. In his seven seasons in Major League Baseball, Johnson has recorded a .280 batting average with over 700 career hits.

Class of ‘10 Chase Marinell Professional Golf Marinell earned a membership on the Web.com Tour in December, finishing in seventh place in Q-School. The Web. com Tour is just one step below the PGA Tour. Marinell earned his spot partially due to an eight-under par score in the third round. The Liberty University graduate is currently on the Web.com Tour, playing in tournaments across the country and internationally.

Class of ‘11 Daniel Vogelbach Chicago Cubs Vogelbach is in his sixth season of professional baseball with the Cubs organization. In November,Vogelbach was added to the Cubs’ 40-man roster, meaning he could be called up to the Major League roster at any time.

Mark Wagner Lagrange College basketball Wagner started every game for the Panthers, who earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The senior scored 15.2 points per game and dished out five assists per game.

His 56 three-pointers and 87.6 free throw percentage were both team highs. He was named to the USA South All-Conference second team. Wagner finished his LaGrange career among the best in school history in made three-pointers and steals, and among ten best in scoring.

Class of ‘12 Nick Rivera FGCU baseball Rivera was named a preseason All-American by both Louisville Slugger and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. In his FGCU career, Rivera ranks in the top ten in doubles, home runs, RBIs, walks, total bases, games started, games played, and hits in school history.

Josh Garcia Embry-Riddle baseball Garcia is in his senior season at Embry-Riddle, and has been an everyday starter at second base for the Eagles. In the first 17 games of the season, Garcia drove in 13 runs, the second highest total on the roster.

Embry-Riddle is playing their first season of Division II baseball.

Class of ‘14 Evan Dougherty Duke University baseball Dougherty started his 2016 season with a bang, hitting three home runs in a single game against Ohio State. He drove in five runs, a career-high, on the game. Through nine games, Dougherty had started every game, and led the team with seven runs batted in.

Jeff Passantino Lipscomb University baseball The preseason All-Atlantic Sun Conference selection won his first two starts of the 2016 season for the Bisons. His first start, a 4-2 victory over Eastern Kentucky, saw him allow just one run on four hits during seven innings on the mound. He also picked up a win over Army, allowing one earned run over 5.2 innings. He struck out 14 hitters over his first two starts.
