“Time best stands still, in moments which look suspiciously like ordinary life.” This simple quote felt like it was whispered to me in a moment of silence. It was such a wonderful description of how God gives us the opportunity to experience grace when we least expect it. It reminded me how each moment in which we find ourselves, is one in which we most assuredly belong. Whether those moments are spent in solitude or companionship; in adversity or joy; in apprehension or peace. God sees so much more in us than we can ever see in ourselves, and He finds simple instances in which to share His presence and His love. Having been given this small glimpse into the very large perspective God has on my life, I reflected on this past year and the brief minutes in which I was simply living my days and yet was blessed beyond my realization.

One such instance was watching nine priests concelebrating with Bishop Dewane at our all school Mass to begin our school year. With the frenetic pace of a school year’s beginning, I had spent my days in haste. But time stopped for me when I looked at the altar and saw ten faces bowed in prayer. It was one of the most profound experiences of my tenure in this school. The grace and dignity which they displayed as they came together to share in this quiet ritual showed how they are truly invested in each of us at Verot. It was powerful to watch them join us out of respect not out of requirement. I was, and still am, honored by their continued presence in our lives.

Another moment in which I was granted a view bigger than my own small field of vision was while I was standing and watching a student in distress. The young girl was facing an adversity to which I could not fathom, and I watched members of our staff and faculty converge on her and support her in ways only found inside those who care beyond their own selves. I looked around and found myself surrounded by people who work tirelessly with the only goal of providing each and every child the best opportunity for success each day. I watched them put the needs of this single person above their own, and was inspired by the dedication modeled for every child who walks on our campus.

I received a phone call which reminded me of the depths of kindness in even the quietest places. I assumed I would be fielding a concern or rectifying a complaint.

Instead I spoke to a gentleman who very succinctly asked me a simple question, and then calmly donated a considerable sum of money to our school in a quiet attempt to fulfill one of my voiced goals. This man wanted no credit and may never see the benefits of his gift, but his admiration for the education provided by our school was enough to cause him to pick up his phone and make that short and selfless call.

And of course…my position affords me the ability to stop and glance at the students who grace our halls with their smiles and their enthusiasm. Their dedication to our school is palpable and their desire to succeed beyond the expectations of us all is enough to stop time for the duration of a prayer of thanks. To watch them holding on to their faith and sharing it with others. To hear their questions and skepticisms which inspire us to be ready for every challenge. And to see them wearing their school spirit with pride and conviction. They are the culmination of our shared pursuits. They are the gift we give back to the world. And they are the shining example of how time best stands still, in moments which look suspiciously like ordinary life.

A letter from the Director of Development My Fellow Vikings, Bishop Verot Catholic High School is a community of faith and learning, devoted to educating minds and hearts, dedicated to service, and centered on Christ.

As each new class arrives on our campus, we welcome new members into our Viking family. One tradition we continue each year is our Freshman Retreat, where our seniors welcome the freshmen to their new family, showing them the gift of helping in our community and the strength of sharing their relationship with God. While our students are building new friendships, our sophomore parents are welcoming the freshmen parents at a meet and greet. The sophomore parents share their experiences of freshman year and offer friendship and community. They embrace and welcome their new family members through a common commitment to the education of their student’s mind, body, and spirit.

Our families are generous with their time, talent, and treasure. Always stepping up to help one another and our school, their examples of selflessness are seen in their children’s character and willingness to step up and be leaders.

Introducing Fr. Casey Fr. Casey has had a busy start to

the school year. His plane had barely hit the ground, and he was off to his first official duty as Bishop Verot High School Chaplain. Four days into the new school year, and the campus was buzzing with freshmen, led by their senior mentors, taking part in an activity meant to familiarize themselves with the campus. After a full day of working in the community, it was now time for them to come back together and spend the evening building friendships and learning more about what it means to be a Viking. The Freshman Retreat traditionally includes a candle light prayer service in the senior courtyard, the perfect place to introduce the new school Chaplain.

Fr. Casey takes his mission very seriously, finding himself inspired by the teachings of St. John Bosco, believing when a person knows they are cared for, it is easier for them to respond to God’s love. He hopes to bring Christ to the students in ways they have never experienced before, with excitement and passion. He understands for many students, they will only know of him from the Altar during all school Masses. However, as our full-time chaplain, he hopes to be very visible and approachable. On any given school day, you will find him in the cafeteria during lunches, visiting with students in the Media Center or Senior Lounge, joining the discussions in Theology classes, and leading our athletes in prayer before their competitions. He celebrates daily Mass for students and staff, and joins our faculty’s Monday morning prayer, offering inspiration and support to our staff as well.

His very first night on campus, he had the entire freshman class and senior leaders kneeling before the Most Blessed Sacrament in the senior courtyard, praying with them and for them. Fr. Casey wants the students to know and understand he is investing in them, through faithful and ardent celebration of the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist, and through relevant and passionate preaching. If his introduction is any indication, Fr. Casey will certainly succeed in his mission.

World Youth Day Pilgrims This summer, nine Verot students and their teacher chaperones, Ms. Olivia Macke ’08 and Mr. Kevin Jordan ’10, traveled to Krakow, Poland for World Youth Day 2016. While a couple of the students had experienced a World Youth Day before, for most it was their first pilgrimage. All of them returned home impacted by their experience as they joined in faith with millions of young people from around the world. Here are their stories…

In a sea of two million people, I felt my eyes gloss over with tears. At that moment, every burden accompanying me onto this trip no longer felt like just mine. Earlier in the day, we had travelled almost ten miles on foot to reach the colossal field where a multitude of pilgrims would spend the next twenty-four hours. Some equipped with inflatable pool rafts and some toting a simple blanket, we all would be sharing the same floor this night. Once the Diocese of Venice had settled in and claimed our plot of land, the beginning of my journey began. Someone I had never spoken to before offered me a warm smile and informed me Mass was about to begin. I knew the official festivities didn’t start for another few hours, but the stranger was cloaked in a familiar green shirt, so I nodded and thanked him. Soon after, I noticed a large number of the young men from our diocese, arms full of water bottle cases. I watched for a time and then realized: they were building an altar.

Soon after, Father Scanlan ‘03 appeared and amidst the blaring multilingual ballads and festering heat, we began the celebration of Mass. In an instant, I was fully present. Amongst the chaos, I heard every word and felt every response. Something about the peaceful scene surrounded by utter disarray made me realize the sheer universality of the church. In the virtual middle of nowhere in Kraków, Poland, all we needed was the Body, the Blood, and the Word. Millions of others encircled us, yet we were all together as One. My gaze floated around, attempting to process the full extent of this fleeting instant. I was born and raised in Cape Coral, Florida and had neglected to so much as step outside of the church in my backyard. In the social scene, being passionate about religion is not particularly “cool”; Therefore, I had tidied and groomed my faith to exist

go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation weekly. I now feel more grace and joy than I have ever felt before. I was what you could call an idle Catholic, now I’m passionately striving for God and wanting to learn more about my faith.

This pilgrimage has truly changed my life for the better. I pray the rest of my fellow pilgrims with me in Kraków, especially my own group, feel the same way I do and live their lives made wonderful by our Lord Jesus Christ. I believe many people my age struggle with what God means to them personally. I know I do, as I constantly fall in sin every day and wrestle with many daily temptations. And this I believe is precisely the reason why I have attended events such as World Youth Day, March for Life, DOV Youth Rally, and other youth conferences.

We must attend these retreats with the willingness in our hearts to live it out every day. I believe I can help my peers understand and find a way to really use God’s lessons for them throughout the rest of their lives. Nothing happens on accident. God places us in these emotional experiences to specially change and impact our lives in a big way. He wants us and will always love us, but we must choose to follow

him. And this is the beauty of life: to see the beauty of our lives every day with God’s help.

Having been to the World Youth Day in Rio, I went to this one expecting it not to be as amazing, but I’m glad I was wrong. It’s crazy to think you’re surrounded by millions of people. To the right of me I’d be looking at somebody from Uganda, and to the left would be somebody from Bulgaria. All of these young people, like me, gathered to experience the grace of God. Even though there were millions of Catholics gathered together, I felt a personal connection with God as the Pope spoke, as the crowds sang, as the people cried, and as we adventured around. This is just something World Youth Day opened my eyes to experience every day.

I have gone to the March for Life twice, but nothing could compare to the feeling of being surround by two million young Catholics including our Holy Father. I didn’t expect it to be so alive, the youth around the world really came into a clear picture during this trip. There was just an overwhelming warmth in the crowds, everyone wanted to meet each other, and talk about how far they traveled or how many languages they could speak. Experiencing the way different cultures practice and uphold their faith really inspired me. My favorite memory was the American speaking conference day. After having multiple speakers, a concert, confession, and watching Papa Fanchesco arrive, we had adoration with Bishop Barron. The high point for me was the welcoming ceremony with Pope Francis.

To see so many young people just like me from all around the world gathered for their faith really inspired me. As I looked around at the countless young people surrounding me, waving their countries’ flags for the Pope, I felt proud to be a Catholic and I felt motivated to use my faith in every aspect of my life and to spread the Good Word.

When we were in the Kraków arena, we heard from Sister Bethany from the Sisters of Life. She told us a story about one of their members, Sister Raquel.

Sister Raquel went to the hospital and met a pregnant woman in an elevator.

She initiated with, “Hi, my name is Raquel Jasmine.” All of a sudden the woman burst into tears. Sister Raquel asked why she was crying. The woman said, “I can’t have this baby, I have to abort it.” Sister Raquel told her, “No you’re not, you’re going to have this baby and you will have a beautiful girl.

And you will be a great mother and you will love her and cherish her for the rest of your life.” The woman responded, “How do you know this? I just met you and you just met me. You know nothing about me.”

Two years passed and Sister Raquel went back to the same hospital for an appointment. Who does she see running down the hallway? The same woman she met in the elevator two years ago. The woman ran up to her and hugged Raquel until she couldn’t breathe. The woman was pushing around two pink strollers, she had twin girls. The woman couldn’t stop thanking her for changing her mind, declaring she loved her girls with all her heart.

The woman said, “I’d like you to meet Raquel and Jasmine.”

I will remember this story for the rest

of my life. It goes to show that life is precious. Just give life a chance.

This trip wasn’t a luxurious vacation, it was a joy filled pilgrimage made possible through many sacrifices. I had the opportunity to meet many youth from all around the world, and build new friendships with the people I traveled with. We all encountered Jesus in various ways. My encounter with Jesus was felt during the overnight vigil with Pope Francis. When first hearing we would be spending the night in an open field with 1.5 million other youth, I quickly became very nervous for what was to come. After a 10 mile walk along side millions of youth, I came to realize there are so many young people like me

who are willing to make sacrifices for their faith. I felt very inspired to put my faith at the forefront of my life. I was greatly impacted when meeting so many faith-filled youth just like me, from Italians with open arms to the French that surrounded our sleeping bags at the overnight vigil. Knowing that 1.5 million youth were in Kraków for the same reason gave me a lot of comfort throughout the trip. One event that really helped me understand the purpose of World Youth Day was the Catchesis we attended at the Kraków Arena. The Catechesis brought together everyone who spoke English from the USA, Great Britain, Australia, and Canada. During the Catechesis we were able to attend adoration, which really opened my heart up to accept the love Jesus has for you and for me. I’ve been to adoration many times, and always have the same confused feelings about it. I never truly understood the purpose of adoration, until I experienced it at World Youth Day. Adoration at the Kraków arena shook me and helped me realize why we

have adoration. During adoration we are supposed to come to the realize Jesus Christ present through the Eucharist.

It is the body, blood, soul, and divinity, under the appearance of the consecrated host held in the monstrance. We are called to attend adoration and be filled with the love Jesus gives us. Another eye opening experience was visiting the concentration camps Auschwitz and Aushwitz two, known as Birkenau. We were able to walk around and see both camps, which was a highlight of my trip.

When visiting the camps, I felt sorrow on my heart. Knowing millions were killed where I was standing really made me feel depressed. But when talking to many leaders and priests on the trip with me, I came to peace, knowing these people’s souls were welcomed with opened arms by Jesus when entering heaven. Yes, what happened is very sad, but Pope Francis wants us to come to peace with what happened and hopes we can hold forgiveness in our hearts to those who caused the holocaust.

Auschwitz is an eternal reminder of what can happen when hatred is allowed to fester. Pope Francis hopes what happened will never be forgotten and we remain aware of our history as humans. He prays we as a world can come together with peace and history will not repeat itself. Motivated with the words from Pope Francis, I left with the message to spread the gospel of Jesus. BV

very year before the Homecoming football game, Verot welcomes home our alumni for a tailgate reunion in the main building courtyard. In September, we hosted one of the largest crowds yet, with several classes including this event with their Class Reunion festivities. If you have never joined us for this casual event, please plan to stop in next year. All alumni and their families are also given admittance to the Homecoming football game to cheer on the Vikings.

Mike Gill ’68 is entering his 46th year as a teacher and coach at Bishop Verot High School.

Over the years, he has served as Athletic Director, Head Football Coach, and woodshop and drafting teacher. He has coached two generations of families and enjoys coaching football more than any other sport. Coach Gill’s wife Pat teaches mathematics at St. Francis Xavier School in Fort Myers. They have two sons, Zachary ’98, an attorney, and Patrick ’05, a doctor.

Jeremy Ridgeo enters his fourth season as Varsity Volleyball Coach at Bishop Verot. Jeremy has also taken several 14U teams to the USAV National Championship tournament as coach and director of polymetric training and conditioning for USA South Volleyball. Originally from Syracuse, New York, Jeremy has a Bachelors Degree in English from Ithaca College and has been a high school teacher for many years.

John Leonard has been around the sport of volleyball at various levels for 23 years. He recently left his position as Head Volleyball Coach of Ave Maria University after three seasons at the helm. John has had coaching success in both the boys and girls game and has helped numerous teams earn national bids. As a player, John has participated in everything from indoor to beach and grass tournaments, including a top 12 finish in the 1996 USAV Men’s Nationals in Dallas, Texas. John is IMPACT and CAP I certified and has worked for three seasons at USA South Volleyball.

Kevin Jordan ’10 enters his third year as Boys and Girls Cross Country Coach. Coach Jordan, a University of Florida graduate, was a four year letter winner for Varsity Cross Country and Track while at Bishop Verot, and hopes to use his competitive running experience to help guide the team to a successful season. “I was lucky enough to have both Father John and Father Joe Beattie as my coaches, and I still carry with me the lessons they taught me about life and running, and hope to pass on this wisdom.”

Jason enters his second year as Coach of the Swimming and Diving Team. Jason has taught Physical Education, has been Dean of Students, and is currently our newly appointed Athletic Director.

In his first year with the BV team, Coach Baumgardner won the Girls District Title and placed second in the region. On the boys side he had multiple district and region individual champions along with two individual state champion titles. Jason, and his wife Jennifer, have four daughters, Sandra ’17, Erika ’18, Deisy ’20, and Laura ’21.

Andy Scott is entering his fourth year coaching the Boys Golf Team. He originally hails from Kentucky and has trained with world renowned golf teachers such as Hank Haney, Bob Toski, Jim McLean, Phil Ritson, and Mac O’Grady. He has been amongst his peers and students alike as one of the top golf instructors in South Florida. His positive, simplistic approach to golf lessons has helped many players improve their games. Andy has a strong junior golf program which has produced 23 juniors to NCAA Collegiate Golf Scholarships.

HEAD COACH JEFF NIXON

Jeff begins his first year as the Girls Golf Coach. Jeff is a graduate of Cape Coral High School and is a Class A member with the PGA of America. He has won multiple awards including the 2006 Teacher of the Year and the 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 Presidents Award for growth of the game. Nixon was also named the 2012, 2013, and 2014 PGA Player Development Award recipient for the South Florida PGA. Jeff has coached over a thousand students ranging from scratch players, beginners, juniors and the disabled. Jeff’s unique ability is to be able to adapt to each student has served him well in the 10,000 plus lessons that he has given over the past twenty years. Jeff is looking forward to sharing his past experience with the Verot.

Heidi Nychyk enters her third season as Head Coach of the Varsity Cheer Team at Bishop Verot after coaching cheerleading for many years at St. Michael Lutheran School. At St. Michaels, her team won first place at CFLAA and First Place National Champions at the 2014 Contest of Champions. Heidi has an extensive background in dance, has danced professionally, and has taught dance for several years. Heidi and her husband Tim have one daughter, Julia ’18.

Amy Glasgow enters her second year coaching at Verot. Amy was born and raised in Plover, Wisconsin. Amy served in the United States Navy. She has an extensive background in cheer including five years with Pop Warner. Amy lives in Fort Myers with her husband Cris, and two of her three children, Bryce ’17, and Harley ’19. Her oldest son Trevor ’16 attends Cincinnati Christian College in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Garth is entering his third year leading the Drumline. He spent eight years teaching in central Florida, where he worked with multiple competitive marching percussions lines at various schools. Mr. David Zukin David Zukin is excited to begin his 23rd year as an educator and his first year in Florida. David moved here this summer from Colorado, where he spent the last 21 years of his life. He has also lived in Illinois, Iowa and Michigan.

David has been a teacher, coach, athletic director, activities director, and assistant principal, and for a short time, he held all of those positions at once. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from the University of Iowa in 1993.

In 2000, he earned his Masters Degree in Education with an emphasis on Administration and Supervision from the University of Phoenix.

Ron DelaCuesta

Ron DelaCuesta joins the Mathematics Department. With 30 years of educational experience, Ron has taught in both private and public schools in Indiana and Florida. He has had the experience of starting a charter school as an administrator. Ron earned

his Bachelors Degree in Education from Purdue University and his Masters in Secondary Education and Educational Leadership from Indiana University.

Growing up in a military family, he has lived all around the world from Germany to the Middle East. Ron, with his wife Stacie and their two sons Logan and Dylan, moved to Florida in 2011. They enjoy traveling and have been to all 50 states, including Alaska this past summer.

Austin Flores ‘08

Austin Flores is in his first year as a teacher at Bishop Verot. Austin, a 2008 graduate of Bishop Verot High School, joins the Social Studies and Physical Education Departments, teaching World Geography, Team Sports, Weight Training, and Personal Fitness. Coach Flores is looking forward to his first year as Head Baseball Coach, taking over from Mr. Dave Nelson. Chris Kelly is very blessed to be teaching AP European History and World History at Bishop Verot. Chris returns to Bishop Verot after serving as the Learning Resource Coordinator from 2010 through 2013. He was born and raised in Staten Island, New York and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from The College of Staten Island in 1997, majoring in Psychology with a minor in History. Chris has been teaching high school for nearly ten years and spent the last two years teaching high school history in the Lee County School System. Chris and his wife Mellany ‘98, have four children; Carlyn, Nathaniel, Gabriel, and Jacob.

Chris’ children attend St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Ft. Myers. Chris enjoys playing basketball and baseball with his children and helping his wife Mellany with basic duties for her flourishing law practice in Cape Coral.

Chris is so excited to be “back in the fold” with the Bishop Verot community.

Alissa Schenk

Alissa Schenk was born and raised in Mount Vernon, Indiana. She graduated from Purdue University in 2014 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Health and Kinesiology: Athletic Training. While there, she worked directly with Purdue athletic teams including football, women’s basketball, and wrestling. She then attended the University of South Florida and earned a Masters Degree in Medical Sciences, with a concentration in Athletic Training. Alissa was a Resident Athletic Trainer at Berkeley Preparatory School

in Tampa for the two years she was in graduate school. Alissa is very excited and grateful to be given the opportunity to join the Bishop Verot High School as the Athletic Trainer.

Dr. David Peterson

David Peterson joins the Science and Mathematics Departments as a Physics and College Algebra teacher. He earned his degree in Physics with an emphasis on Optical Properties of Materials from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Purdue University. After spending almost 30 years working as a professional physicist in corporate research, engineering, product development, and intellectual property licensing, David chose to share his knowledge in the classroom. He began teaching at the college level at Ave Maria University and Donahue Academy, when he and his wife relocated to Southwest Florida three years ago.

Jason Baumgardner

Jason Baumgardner was named Athletic Director this summer and feels blessed to lead the Verot Athletic Program. He grew up in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Jason played baseball in college, earning his Bachelors Degree in Sports Management from Elon University in North Carolina. His wife Jennifer and he moved to Ft. Myers in 1999, where Jason began his teaching and coaching career with Community School of Naples. After nine years, he was offered the opportunity to create an athletic program with The Village School. It is there he served as Athletic Director and Dean of Students for the past seven years. Jason and his wife have four daughters, Sandra ’17, Erika ’18, Deisy ’20, and Laura ’21.

Jayne Webb-Martin

Jayne Webb-Martin is excited for her first teaching opportunity as Law Studies

teacher. Jayne is a full time lawyer practicing Collaborative Family Law and serves as a court appointed mediator for family cases on the 20th Judicial Court in Lee County. Jayne earned her Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Brigham Young University and her Doctor of Law degree from Southern Methodist University. Jayne, and her husband, Paul, came to Southwest Florida from Paul’s native Zimbabwe. They have three grown daughters, Victoria, Brittany, and Samantha ’16. The opportunity to teach comes at the perfect time for Jayne as their youngest daughter, Samantha, left this summer for the U.S. Naval Academy’s Prep School in Newport, Rhode Island.

Jorge Fleitas

Jorge Fleitas joins the Social Studies Department and is teaching World History and American History. He will also join the Athletic Department as coach for both Cross Country in the fall and Track and Field in the spring. Jorge holds a Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Florida State University and a Masters in Psychology from Carlos Albizi University. Jorge has relocated to Southwest Florida from Orlando, where he was an administrator at Dr. Phillips High School for the past three years. Previously, Jorge taught American and World History at Christopher Columbus Catholic High School, his alma mater, in Miami. In addition to his classroom experience, Jorge has had great coaching success. The Dr. Phillips High School track and field team earned a 4A Team State Title in 2015 and the Columbus Catholic High School cross country team earned state titles in 2008, 2009, and 2010, all under Coach Fleitas’ leadership. Jorge, and his wife Angela, a teacher at St. Francis Xavier, have two young children, Jorge Jr. and Nico. BV

Joseph graduated from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine School of Pharmacy in Bradenton, receiving his Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree, in June of this year. Dr. Rodriguez is also a graduate of Florida Gulf Coast University. He is practicing with Greenberg Dental and Orthodontics and resides in Riverview, Florida.

Kellie Hyde ‘11 Kellie graduated cum laude from Florida State University in 2015 with a Bachelors Degree in Biological Sciences.

She is now in the Ph. D. Graduate program at FSU in the Department of Psychology, Program of Nueroscience. Kellie hopes to provide, through her research, insight into the

Brent Boisvert ‘13 Brent sailed on seven voyages during his second summer sea Internship as Deck Cadet aboard the USNS Mercy, the Navy’s Pacific Hospital Ship across the Pacific Ocean, including two Great Circle transits and crossing the Equator totaling 11,503.1 nautical miles. The ship’s mission was focused on disaster preparedness, response, and humanitarian assistance to the countries of Timor Leste, Philippines/Luzon, and Vietnam at Da Nang. During his time on board he aided in ocean, coastal and harbor navigation, preparation and correction of charts/ publications, and preparation of Pre-Arrival/ Departure Navigation Briefs. Brent also took part in Joint Operations with the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force passage exercise across the South China Sea. Brent is currently a junior at SUNY Maritime College in New York studying Marine Transportation while earning his BS in Business and obtaining his Deck License to serve as an Officer aboard unlimited tonnage vessels around the world.

ALUMNI Chris Johnson ‘03 MIAMI MARLINS

SPORTS Vogelbach posted the best season of his professional career at the triple-A level, and was named to the Triple-A All-Star Game as well as the postseason Pacific Coast League All-Stars. The first baseman hit 23 home runs and drove in 96 runs in his time with the Iowa Cubs and the Tacoma Rainers. He drew more walks than any player in the league, and his totals in on base percentage, home runs, RBIs, and runs scored were all among the top ten in the PCL.Vogelbach became a member of the Mariners organization on July 22, and helped the Rainers to a playoff spot.

In his eighth season of Major League Baseball, Johnson was a near-every day player for the Miami Marlins. As of press time, the infielder had seen time in 104 of the Marlins’ 140 games.

He spent the majority of the season as a first baseman, and hit five home runs with 22 RBIs as of September 9. ALUMNI Ricky Doyle ‘14 FGCU BASKETBALL

The center announced in May he would be transferring from Michigan to FGCU. Doyle, who is considered one of the bigger transfer signings in program history, will be forced to sit out the 2016-2017 season due to NCAA transfer rules. He will have two seasons of eligibility with the Eagles beginning in 2017-18. Doyle, who played in 67 of a possible 68 games during his time as a Wolverine, becomes the third Verot player to suit up for the Eagles, joining Reed Baker ‘06 and Eddie Murray ‘08, who starred for FGCU’s famed Dunk City team in 2013.

SPORTS Thaddeus Ward ‘15 UCF BASEBALL

Ward developed into one of the top starters for the Staunton Braves of the Valley League, a summer collegiate baseball league in Virginia.The righthander was at his best in the month of July, when he posted a 1.37 ERA over four starts and 26.1 innings.

He was undefeated over that time frame, and did not allow more than two earned runs in any of his July starts.Ward’s efforts helped the Braves into the Valley League playoffs. In total, the Knight went 2-2 with only 21 walks in his 43.2 innings on the mound.

Band students visit with St. Francis Xavier Catholic School Last month, members of the Bishop Verot Band traveled to St. Francis to offer their assistance at the first meeting of their 6th grade band class. They assisted with instrument selection and beginning instruction for these new musicians. We wish them great success and look forward to having them join our BV Band and Drumline in a few years.

Varsity Softball Team Receives Proclamation The Lady Vikings received a Proclamation by Mayor Henderson and the Fort Myers City Council declaring May 16, 2015 the Bishop Verot Girls’ Softball State Champions Day. The Lady Vikings are the only high school softball team in the county to have won an FHSAA State Title.

Mass of Healing

Yearbook Awards

In response to recent violence in our community, and specifically affecting our friends at Dunbar High School, Fr. Casey celebrated an all school Mass of Healing. On August 29th, the student body adjusted their daily schedule to gather in the Anderson Theater in prayer. While we are reminded we don’t know the why these tragedies happen, we can be comforted in knowing God is always with us during such tragedy. The Mass concluded with the singing of “Go Light your World”, telling us to seek out the helpless, confused and torn, hold out our candles for all to see it, and go light our world.

The Luceat yearbook editors attended the Jostens 2016 Disney Summer Yearbook Workshop this past summer.

There were over 300 participants from five states.

Our staff placed 3rd in a theme, concept, and design competition. Congratulations to Erica Fouts, Jamie DeCarlo, Julia Canzano, and Olivia Woolam.

Studying Mosquito Larvae

Environmental Science Visits the Mud Flats

Students in physical science and biology classes recently completed a lab testing the level at which bacterium effectively controls mosquito larvae. Brian Murphy, an educator from Lee County Mosquito Control, assisted in the instruction. During the week long lab, students performed a bioassay test, a test used to determine the toxicity of a substance to an organism. Students were able to determine the level of toxicity of Bacillus sphaericus, a bacteria not toxic to humans or most other animals, to Culex mosquito larvae.

Students in Mrs. Bergau’s Environmental Science class spent a few hours at the mud flats, to learn about the beauty and peril of our local estuaries. Students collected, examined, and released marine organisms found on the grassflat. While out exploring nature, students were also encouraged to spend time in quiet reflection, offering a prayer of thanksgiving for all of God’s blessings.
